This is the perfect place to wright about how much i miss Brum.

I've been living in Shefield for the past seven weeks now, and as much as i love it here, it just doesn't compare to Birmingham.

The people may be a little bit friendlier (certainly not all though), but there just isn't that big city feel that Brum has. I miss shopping in brum, the massive range of nightlife on offer, and of course, the buildings and squares that i love.

Doesn't it just make you all warm inside. :) :weird:

jolon

Yes it was bloody brilliant. It was like Atomic Jam but at the cricket ground. The only one that I can remember which was anywhere near as good as this was when Peugeot lauched the 206 with a laser and firework show in Centenary Sqaure. It was all very french and Jean Michel Jarresque where they used the reflection of Hyatt and the surrounding buildings. That was impressive. anyone go to that one?

Ok here is some tonight I'm going out in Ironbridge with my mother and my sister, its slightly embarrassing but is my moms birthday, whats even more embarrassing was that she wanted to go clubbing. She is 47 btw.
Not looking forward to it.

I'm sure you'll be pleased to know that it wasn't too bad, I got through it by doing my sulky and sullen look its my favourite and my mom and older sis are more lightweight than me so I got to come home quite early too. There were a few fit barmaids as well.

What about Horsehay? I was down there today and the scars of the development are all over the place the severed roads replaced my massive new ones are the most obvious. It has this real 'village' feel about it and is a conservation zone. It was the area least affected by the built developments of the new town but today I noticed just how many new houses were going up there and thinking about it, its about to get so much worse...

I'm in listing mode These developments are within walking distance of Horsehay

Lawley. 3,300 new homes plus school offices etc, a new district.

Lightmoor Urban Village. 850 homes + new school and village centre. The "
new" Bournville

Ennstone works. 600 new homes + extension to factory

Former Ibstock Brick Works. 100 homes plus new residential care home

It is right on the lip of the gorge and has fantastic views of the power station and the Wrekin, one if my dream views

I remember Solihull quite vaguely as I haven't been there for a good 10+ years. My memories are of shopping centre of what appears to be a 60s build (no natural light) and it stunk. I remember I totally hated that place and since then hated Solihull because of it.

I also remember walking through the town centre just after having a tour of Solihull School (which was way to posh for me at the tender age of 11/12).

The 60s shopping Mall has been spruced up quite well.. it doesn't feel so dark any more as they have used lighter colour materials. That really is the only approaching crap bit of Solihull town centre.. Mell Sq a very 1950s shopping square actually has aged pretty well. The High St was pedestriansided about 10 years ago (maybe longer) and is very pleasant. And i have yet to visit a nicer shopping Mall than Touchwood anywhere.

I think I'm due for a visit to Solihull soon then! It'll be interesting to see how it has changed - considering I was born at Solihull Hospital. I haven't even seen Touchwood yet. Most people say it is great but I have heard the few say it is over the top.

I remember walking around the school and seeing all the posters, trophy cabinets and the headteacher talking about trips to Alaska and all. Erebus, if you hate Solihull just cause of what I assume is Poplar Way you're talking about, the rest of the town isn't really like that :) Yeah there are some crap bits, but obviously you get that everywhere, the parks are nice, so is the High Street and I do like touchwood, it's like the Bullring in Minature, but with a few more non-chain type shops.

Yep, I live in Sutton. You'll tend to find the north is better than the south. But the town centre is a mighty mix. The shopping area is dire - avoid at all costs. But north of that is Holy Trin Church and the High Street conservation area which is very scenic.

South Sutton is like you're average suburb but crunched down so you have all sorts of housing in a smaller area. North Sutton is much more affluent and that's where you have the huge houses and millionaires. As for me, I'm south Sutton.

smysticed - if it bothers you enough, you can get your name changed, but I suggest you don't! Here's how:

How can I change my user name
You cannot change the name yourself, an administrator has to do this. Since we get many requests to change names just for the fun of it we only allow name changes for a good reason, in which case you can send me a PM or email (jan@skyscrapercity.info) to explain what the story is. Others have to wait until Christmas, when we have our annual name change festival.

They're the worst toilets I've ever been in. The graffiti was the most graphic I've ever seen and as I said, the toilet cubicle door had the top half chopped off to try and prevent any 'naughtiness' going on.

I remember talking about the toilets with you Butterfield. I have witnessed them myself. I think they've been done up now, they've certainly had a lick of paint on the outside but I haven't dared to go inside.

I haven't gotten lost in Sutton Park because I always skim the edges of it. I did go on a tour right through middle of it once which was great. We found our way up some sort of hill and it was totally empty with the exception of an ice cream van! Apparently we were the first customers the guy had had that day and it was nearing 5pm in sunshine! By the time I had come out of the park, I was half bitten by gnats, soaked after retrieving a football from one of the lakes and caked in mud and after sliding down a muddy path down a hill. It was all worth it :).

Interesting news, I went on a site visit today with some of our Flood guys today to see some of the damage caused by the floods. In Coalbrookdale a tiny brook (the Coal Brook) flooded so badly that the water was high enough to enter a postbox through its letter slot. It was awful I'd hate to live there.

We also wandered through peoples farms looking at the damage. This one bridge in South Shropshire had been ripped off its plinth on one side and was hanging very precariously over the Corve. We visited that bridge in Ludlow that were washed away it was much bigger than I'd expected it to be, and we wemt to Tenbury Wells, their whole high street flooded it must have been so awful for them. We went to the church their and you could see all the tide marks on the gravestones. Not pleasant.

I thought there were squillions of tower blocks in Frankfurt, as there is in every German town and city!

Therefore, Germany is the Scotland of... Germany. :shifty:

Erebus555

Not Frankfurt. It's very much rows and rows of low rise blocks. Try Dresden and the East German cities, but Frankfurt would be a let down for any tower block seeker. That's not to say there isn't any ;)

But don't expect anything uber special! The film, as a whole, was nothing like the first and second films. Though I must say, the humans, especially the make-up bloke who is rather camp, look quite real. For a moment I actually thought the make-up-bloke-who-is-rather-camp was actually real!

Yeah. I saw Shrek III with the missus at Stab City on Saturday. Not a patch on the first two.

Some useless (but funny) information about the Shrek Franchise.

Produced by Dreamworks pictures. One of the founders of Dreamworks used to work at Disney

Left Disney because he fell out with the main bloke at Disney. Who is apparently quite short.

Hence, Lord Farquad from the first movie is a midget, and it's always Disney Characters who are the butt of the jokes, Pinochio wearing thongs, Snow White giving dwarves away because she has another 6 at home, Sleeping Beauty being thick as shit, Beauty (without the beast) ditto etc.

The whole Shrek franchise is Dreamworks sticking two fingers up at Disney!!!

I thought Showcase had gone?! Shows how often I go into that part of town doesn't it?

Stab City's atrium is being redeveloped again, and it was absolutely rammed in there on saturday night. Doesn't actually feel as threatening as it once did.

True story that about Shrek. Was a Rep from Disney who told me about it just after the 1st movie came out back when I was working at Smith's in town on Music & Video. He said that some of Disney's managers were quite upset about it!

What are they doing to it now? Last time I went there, there was a giant (yet melted) ski slope. Star City has really failed in a way. There's in the area that could attract people. The people I see there most often are motorway workers, surveyors and trainspotters. :ohno:

Everything in Shrek was just so unfunny. I only remember laughing once and that was half-hearted. These types of films just try too hard to make the audience laugh - the second Toy Story was the same, the enjoyment factor had gone compared with the first. Shrek just makes me feel ill. :ohno:

Not a clue what they're doing mate, because the complex doesn't seem to have a website :dunno: Looks like they're opening it back up to let some natural light in there. The atrium was all open with a big glass roof over it when it opened, and I still don't know why they changed it.

I don't think it's failed as such. It's just not been quite as successful as it was hoped. The old Mustard Nightclub is still shut, as is the old Books etc/Borders shop.

But, the cinema and casino are always busy, as is the (nasty) chinese buffet restaurant, bowlplex and gymn.

Need to get some more density into the area. There's a new hotel, and the new "StarGate" business park which should help the feel of the area.

Maybe it's just cos I've seen so many children's films over the years - all the humour I'd seen before. If you want to see Eddie Murphy being funny, watch Coming To America. If you want to see Mike Myers being funny, watch Wayne's World. I just didn't find they worked in Shrek. It was dull.

I didn't like the Incredibles. But I tell you what I did like, ICE AGE! Now that was entertainment! I remember all the one-liners. Ice Age 2 was piss poor though:ohno: .

They had a website but that just disappeared off the face of the earth. I can't remember it having a glass roof but I remember being all open. I think I didn't got to StarCity til quite late on when it already became notorious for hoards of unruly Asian youths and their equally menacing cars!

I don't think it's failed as such. It's just not been quite as successful as it was hoped. The old Mustard Nightclub is still shut, as is the old Books etc/Borders shop.

I am yet to go in the casino. It doesn't look too welcoming. The bowling place has become a bit much now but I still maintain that the cinema is the best in the city (with the exception of the Electric Cinema on Station Street). I hate walking along the outside and seeing all the closed units with "For Sale" on them. It's depressing! :ohno:

Need to get some more density into the area. There's a new hotel, and the new "StarGate" business park which should help the feel of the area.

There's business parks all over the place there. Hurricane Park is nearby too. I just can't see how putting an entertainment complex slap bang in the middle of an industrial area was going to help things. Bring back Nechells power station, I say! The cooling towers were a lot more impressive that Starcity!:bash: :bash: :bash:

I wish they would but it's the general perception of the area which is bringing it down. Crime was through the roof until they started closing up all the lowrise blocks. They'll be demolished too and the whole site will be turned into Barratts homes probably. Money raised from that will fund the refurb of the other towers on site which, whilst stumpy, are still quite bootiful! All they need is a lick o' paint!
