View Full Version : Skyline shots at night with Grid
Tee November 3rd, 2005, 12:49 AM No, unfortunately I'm not posting any new incredible shots that haven't already been, but rather asking for more. I've done a fair share of searches on Google, Ask Jeeves and Alta Vista but have found none comparable to the one below, the one that completely blew my imagination away.
I'm pretty dissapointed in myself, because although I'm planning on making a trip sometime in March or April of next year, I've been to NYC four times in the last four years and have never been to Chicago in my life. I always knew Chicago was one of the major cities in the world with a world class and dominating skyline, but among the many pics posted in the Windy City thread, none impressed me more than this one just a couple days ago. It made Chicago the most impressive city sprawl and skyline I've ever seen in my life without actually having been there. A true metropolis, so insane with such skyscraping giants that it looks like something out of the "Corouscant" city in the last three Star Wars films. I especially like how the big three (JHC, Aon Center and Sears) anchor the north, central and southern ends of it. Although Manhattan has the canyons, you've got five buildings in Chicago that are over 300 meters tall, that's a feat Hong Kong just accomplished this year with the Nina Tower. Never seen anything more imposing than the combination of the Sears, Aon and JHC.
So please, if anybody has any pics even close, post them. Whether they are shot closer and more focused on the skyscrapers or even farther away with an ever bigger view of the entire cityscape, it doesn't matter.
Can't wait to visit. What a great city!

chicagogeorge November 3rd, 2005, 01:29 AM Thank you for your positive comments on our city. We hope you visit soon! As for photos, did you look at this thread? http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=261081
I'm sure you will not be dissapointed.

Apparently not ;)
Oh and Tee, pictures don’t show the true beauty of Chicago. When you walk through the downtown area for the first time, it is absolutely magnificent. (okay, so I don’t remember my first time very good, but when I take friends who visit Chicago for the first time, they are speechless.)
wickedestcity November 3rd, 2005, 07:02 PM just your car ride from ohare to downtown will cause your heart to skip a beat around North ave. by the budwieser sign , one of the greatedt veiws of our magnificant skyline . you will shit your pants if youv never seen it befor!

ohh...
UrbanSophist November 4th, 2005, 01:41 AM Ahh, Chicago. The story of man vs. nature. There wasn't a connection between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River, so we built one. The city's water supply was contaminated by crap from industrial Chicago flowing out into the lake from the river, so we reversed it. And as evidenced in those photos, Chicago was very very flat, so we built our own mountain. ;)
Azn_chi_boi November 4th, 2005, 01:44 AM I found another picture.

ChiLooper November 4th, 2005, 01:45 AM Nice pics
Windy City Dude November 4th, 2005, 02:54 AM I hope you enjoy your visit, but the later in April the better. March days can be a bit blustery, although St. Patricks day is certainly a world class party all over the city.
mookerjie November 4th, 2005, 06:27 AM That's an amazing dawn/dusk pic, the North Side is so solid.
qwerty1324 November 4th, 2005, 06:36 AM hydrogen, awesome pic of Chicago you posted.

There is nothing and i mean nothing in the world like driving into a city especcially at night. Even when i drive into Tampa i have a split second where my heart just beats a little faster. But, going into Chicago driving in on the Kennedy from the Edens is just .... well there is not a word to explain it. There is just a life about the City. These pictures in this thread and the chicago pic thread are making the 61 days until i return home both sad that i am not there for the best time in Chicago and exiceted to return.

Don't worry about crediting me, I can care less. Just post em!
Show the world what Chicago has to offer!
itsnotrequired November 5th, 2005, 06:08 AM I got to witness the grid just this evening when I flew back from DC. Awesome sound...

Of course. :)
Thanks to everybody who posted all the great pics. That's precisely what I had been looking for. In some of those shots, the city is so bright it looks like it's on FIRE. The place just doesn't look like it's from this world and I mean that in the very most positive of ways. It looks like a fantasy land, something you'd only see in Sci-Fi movies or in your dreams. I actually got to look over Manhattan from the airplane when I flew in at night when they had the lights representing the Twin Towers and it was the most incredible thing I'd ever seen -- I also saw the most famous skyscraper in history illuminated in red, white and blue as well as the spire of perhaps the most beautiful skyscraper ever created. I love NYC and will travel there many more times in my life, but if I'm finding Chicago just as, if not even more impressive when I haven't even been there yet then I can only imagine what it'll be like to actually go..
I remember when the MTV Real World show was in Chicago, I'd always tune it every week and even catch the re-runs. Not because I had any interest whatsoever in the actual show, but to make sure I caught every mind shattering view of the city they show in the mini-clips at the beginning, middle and end commercials of the show. (If you've ever seen any single episode of "Real World", you know what I'm talking about).
I'd rather not go during the winter and although I live in PHOENIX, ARIZONA the reason for that isn't what you might think -- I actually don't mind cold weather, but I'd rather visit in April or May when one of the better and historic attractions -- Wrigley Field (I'm a huge baseball fan and admirer of WF) -- is hosting games.
oh shit I never thought about it like that, that pic does look like corsucant!!!
That's the only city I can really compare it to, and its not even a real city. It's the perfect example when I think of a metropolis with insanely massive structures to anchor the skyline.
