I hope those balcony bits don’t fall off!..Looks a bit dodgy.

Looking good. I am a little pissed off too in the way they incorporated the old facade or should I say the way they hadn’t!. Hopefully when completed, it will fit in well. We just have to wait and see I guess…Now if only the rest of Barrack st can get redeveloped.

its fairly good for thr area which is crap currently. i couldnt imagine perth to get many more developments of a crap design.

matt sbs is called precast concrete and its is a cheaper alternative to the curtain wall system. most buildings have a mix of both ie. allegro.

mike_london
March 28th, 2006, 05:15 PM
yeah it does look fucking ugly... maybe a paint job would improve it. is that some sort of facade they are building at street level? whats the deal?

ryan79
March 28th, 2006, 05:24 PM
I was thinking of buying into this, because of the location. Hopefully they will be decent on the inside and have good views.

Blindfold
March 29th, 2006, 07:59 AM
Do please say that the exposed concrete is going to painted white?

Although its better than nothing and brings residents and possible vibrancy into the CBD, this is a pretty fugly tower. However, i'll reserve my final opinion until its completely finishsed.

Their complete misuse of the heritage facade is a travesty.

planner-stu
March 29th, 2006, 08:01 AM
Couldn't agree more about the heritage facade... the architects should be ashamed of themselves

Dilaz89
March 29th, 2006, 08:16 AM
Yeah. All they are doing to amalgamate it is creating a wall like structure to be clad in glass (reason for those pillar things) so it is all level and "fits in". Really lame!

Scraperfan
March 29th, 2006, 10:06 AM
Yeh you would think they would try and incorporate the heritage facade into the actual building rather than having it standing there for no purpose.

This building will enjoy some nice views but yet again the balconies are so small they hardly warrant having them at all.

ryan79
March 29th, 2006, 11:00 AM
The balconys don't look that small. My concern is lack of window size. Won't let much light into those apartments.

I guess it has to be judged upon completion but for now it ain't looking pretty.

Dilaz89
March 29th, 2006, 12:00 PM
Yeah, it looks so boxy, elnclosed and claustrophobic. Reminds of the stuff that sydney got in the early 90's.

tbor
March 30th, 2006, 01:45 AM
I don't know what all the fuss is about... I'm not a fan on concrete, but this is NOT one of the worst examples. The fridges along the foreshore are worse. Some glass would have been nice.

I think its looks dull, but not butt ugly. My definition of ugly is the Western Power building next door. YUK.

Do please say that the exposed concrete is going to painted white?

Off-white I thought. Only a bees-dick better than exposed concrete I reckon.

Ipggi
March 30th, 2006, 02:01 AM
Small windows do have the advantage of keeping airconditioning costs down. Specially for the units that will be facing west and having a hot afternoon sun beaming directly into their apartments every day during the summer.

My apartment only has a small balcany with glass doors and one window in the bedroom. Like what is seen in this building, and it receives more then enough light.

matt_sbs
March 30th, 2006, 08:53 AM
the building looks pretty plain, needs more glass

perthguy78
March 30th, 2006, 09:24 AM

The nice sea breeze coming up the river through nice large windows will also reduce Air Con. costs.

Mr Magnate
March 31st, 2006, 02:35 PM
It looks really terrible, cheap and unattractive.

Barracks Plaza doesn't represent the era it's being built in, it looks mid 80's - 90's. I rate it the worst looking building in the CBD now.

Looking at other unattractive building in the CBD like Western Power and Council House they might seem unattractive but they represent the era they were built in respectively, which makes me respect them more.

Citystyle

Christ Almighty! This building looks absolutely SHITE! Yeah, granted that this is going up in the arse end of Barrack St (Perth's own Skid Row), but this building really doesn't do any favours to the precinct at all. Never let builders have design control on such large buildings! Leave this sort of stuff to trained architects, please!

mike_london
April 2nd, 2006, 09:40 PM
council house = one of my favourite smaller buildings

Mr Magnate
April 3rd, 2006, 03:07 PM
Agree with elfreako, Barracks Plaza has done no favours to the existing precinct!

Regarding Council House, I do recall prior to it's last redevelopment members of the community and even media outlets labelling it a major eyesore and calling for it to be demolished rather than redevelopment like it has been.

Looks like Council House survived and is here to stay for many more years to come. It's a great piece of 70's architecture!

and a crap building. looks so cheap. hopefully grocon will buy the site in a few a years and knock it down and build a taller BETTER skyscraper.

Ipggi
April 23rd, 2006, 05:17 AM
Not everyone needs or wants a waterfront apartment. For one, some people prefer a more urban feel where you can see the traffic, infrastructure and highrise buildings. Plus its very convenient. Located on major arterial roads, opposite the central train station, a minute walk to a major supermarket, cbd shopping and close to much of the the CBD nightlife.

Geeze this is a shocker, real candidate for a prison block. We have a student apartment building going up here in Adelaide soon that could look very similar to that but in a red/pink colour. I shudder thinking about it. Hopefully some construction occurs around this one to cover it up and maintain Perth's quality skyline.

I wonder if that top apartment would hear the buzzing of the neon.

Fake shutters on the windows of this building would dress it up quite nicely. Need somethings, maybe washing on the balcony railings will add interest :)

Hopefully when the hotel opens the tourists will scare away all the untouchables that hang around that area.
I walk past there after work at night on the way to the train station, it's not pretty.

And I'm new by the way, there's my two cents worth of introduction :)

WELCOME..... i dont mind that area yeah its seedy, but its only a small part of the city, as long as the seedyness doesent spread, its okay having a small amount in one part of the city, its a bums paradise, TAB, sex shops, bottle shops, convenience stores, cheap eateries lol

its starting to grow on me. Ground floor looks ok and the bar looks cool too. Also the whole roof is lit up at night similar to qv1but alot dimmer and that looks great. Can't really tell in my pic though.

Actually, that last shot of Barrack St shows the mish mash of architecture of Perth.

Also, from that angle, Barracks Plaza looks quite imposing. The more pics I see of it the more I like it. Wonder how much apartments are going for there?

Yeah. And you can see The Court, the most STD infested gay bar in Perth. I can smell the chlamydia from here....

June 18th, 2006, 08:25 AM
Nar iv heard more bad stories from connections than the court lol.

THe bar was lit up last night although it hasn't opened yet. I can see it bieng much like fuche on murray st but bigger and better.

apartments now lived in. They are accessed by a door next to the mailboxes just left of the hotel lobby. In keeping with the cheap style of the building, 1 lift which is part of the tri-lift core has been partitioned off from the other two so it only serves this apartment lobby.

Should open within a week.

BTW i think that pottery place is temporary.

stupid me. i walked in today only to be thrown out by a bunch of men and the lady behind the desk because it hasnt opened yet. I used the good old excuse just looking at apartments around here.:D

From what i could see it was a decent interior, much better than statton, however the looby felt 'tight'.
