David Chow Kam Fai, CEO of the Macao Fisherman's Wharf International Investment Ltd., signed contracts with the first group of anchor tenants to enter the themed park here on Thursday. The designated opening of the Fisherman's Wharf slated for the beginning of September will coincide with the opening of Hong Kong Disneyland, which has caused rumors of a pending rival competition between two themed parks. Chow said that the Fisherman's Wharf is not a rival to the Hong Kong Disneyland, which are distant from each other with one and a half hour jet-boat ride. The park is much smaller in land resources than that of the Disneyland. However, he emphasized that by hosting over 1,600 million visitors last year, Macao has its own charm in assimilating tourists. Being neighboring motherland's mainland and with a population of 460,000, Macao should expect a fanfare at the opening of its first themed park in September. Chow did not specify the exact date of the opening, but announced mysteriously that the company would spare the entrance fee of the park. He explained that due to the rising real estate price in Macao, the company would see a 20 percent increase in leasing charge on tenants. The income would allow the company to offset ticket sales. Located in Macao's outer harbor, the wharf with 40 percent of its area standing on a patch of reclaimed seashore covers an area totaling 1 million square feet. The project co-developed by David Chow and Macao's casino mogul Stanley Ho will cost a total investment of 1.2 billion Hong Kong dollars (154 million US dollars). In its first-phase blueprint, the Fisherman's Wharf offers a fancy spewing artificial volcano, Chinese fort, faux Colosseum anda variety of borrowed miniature landmarks from Babylon, Miami, Lisbon, Cape Town, Amsterdam and other cities. Four anchor tenants signed the contracts with the project developer on Thursday. They are the Celebrate Macao Corp., which plans to open 12 restaurants and bars in the park, The Rainbow Group, a prominent retailing chain of world-class fashion brands, Wellmart Holdings Limited, a catering group planning to establish a Japanese food complex in the park, and the Macao Hotel Supplies Ltd., a retailer of cosmetic products. Chow said that there are still rooms of some 300,000 square feet left for further commercial leasing in the park. He hoped there will be outstanding tourist service providers, catering companies and retailers willing to open business in the park. He added that it would be not until January next year that all entertainment activities in the park will be put on show, which will meet the park's theme in offering a world of entertainment. Chow also disclosed that the company has submitted the blueprint for the second-phase construction to the Macao government for approval, which would take another two to three years to conduct land reclamation and construction. "For safety reasons, we decided that we should focus on the construction first," a public relations officer said. The 80-hectare park - which includes a 40-metre high volcano, a children's fort, shopping mall, Roman amphitheatre and Babylonian themed casino - had been scheduled to soft-launch yesterday, with a grand opening on December 31. Media people visited the park, only to be told it was not ready. Cocktails were held on a wooden dock where the paint was barely dry. "When doing business, we cannot tie ourselves down to a time frame," Fisherman's Wharf CEO David Chow Kam-fai said. The development by Stanley Ho Hung-sun and Mr Chow broke ground in late 2001 and was first scheduled to open in October 2003. "We've had problems with labour shortages, and then we had to change the designs," Mr Chow said. He said a Dutch-style building had been built from bricks imported from Amsterdam. "All this takes time and effort," he said. hkskyline December 20th, 2005, 06:39 AM hkskyline January 3rd, 2006, 05:42 PM By "601~JS6193" from a Hong Kong transport forum : http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a341/er762006/DSC01411.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a341/er762006/DSC01413.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a341/er762006/DSC01414.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a341/er762006/DSC01420.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a341/er762006/DSC01422.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a341/er762006/DSC01423.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a341/er762006/DSC01424.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a341/er762006/DSC01418.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a341/er762006/DSC01419.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a341/er762006/DSC01421.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a341/er762006/DSC01412.jpg unusualer January 4th, 2006, 09:20 PM thx hkskyline! the pix u got above r way better than the 1s i took haha!! dhoyax January 11th, 2006, 01:20 AM nice one.........i plan to visit here this saturday....... hkskyline March 27th, 2006, 04:43 AM Macau has more to offer than a house of cards 27 March 2006 South China Morning Post What a shame that Macau's Fisherman's Wharf, the spectacular recreation of the architecture of mercantile cities throughout history, is being allowed to languish unpromoted. Apart from a few restaurants, such as Richard Feldman's popular Sichuan and Al's Diner, and Joao Mesquita Ferreira's Camoes serving authentic Portuguese food, activity is minimal. The whole project, 51 per cent owned by Stanley Ho Hung-sun and 49 per cent by Mr Chow, is a tribute to the latter's eye for detail, with the historic buildings faithfully reproduced. The point of the project's other features which line the shore between the ferry pier and the Sands casino, such as the faux coliseum, a "live" volcano and an African village are harder to fathom. After a few exciting eruptions, the volcano fell silent and has remained so after a woman was hurt in an accident involving the roller-coaster inside. But its future appears shrouded in secrecy. Ask any Macau tourism insider and it becomes clear this episode is a taboo subject. The volcano apart, Fisherman's Wharf offers imaginative street theatre and an impressive historical experience. But it has so far suffered a marketing bypass. Instead of showcasing this, the territory's newest and most photogenic attraction, Macau-bound Hong Kong ferry passengers are treated to videos of Pansy Ho Chiu-king publicising the Macau Tower. So far, there has been no visible effort to promote the place, although it has effectively been open since January. This situation is compounded by a lack of access and signage. Newly erected iron railings bar pedestrians from strolling between it and the adjacent Sands. Apparently, these were installed after someone got hit crossing the busy road, but surely a pedestrian crossing would have sufficed. Now anyone walking from Sands to Fisherman's Wharf must take a 15-minute detour. The promenade along the wharf is closed off, too. Taking a taxi is no easier, with locals saying cab drivers determinedly drop off Fisherman's Wharf passengers at Sands, knowing there is no simple way through. It's time for a co-ordinated marketing push to show Macau has more for tourists than casinos. Portugues March 30th, 2006, 02:31 AM Macau's Fisherman's Wharf (should I write Doca dos Pescadores) is something amazing and its a proof of Macau's healthy!
