I like the OKC skyline overall but it really needs a new signature building. OKC is the state capital and the largest city in Oklahoma with over a million people in the metro, yet the skyline does not reflect that. I hope that all the Bricktown development can somehow stir up plans for new high rise condominiums and office buildings downtown, only time will tell...

While the skyline isn't that impressive it does have density and the Bricktown entertainment district down there is awesome! 7/10

The actual skyline is kinda depressing, but downtown Oklahoma City as a whole is really awesome. Take a look at what is going on in Bricktown and you will be impressed. With a couple new towers built, which could be soon with the way downtown is booming, I think the skyline would be a lot cooler and reflect better on the cool stuff already down there.

OKC's skyline is just OK. I remember being a kid about 7-8 years old when i first went to downtown OKC, and i commented about how their skyline wasn't as good as Tulsa's. However, they do have a couple of really cool buildings (the older ones that aren't boxy). The newer towers, especially the Bank One tower is downright ugly.

Nice how they've managed to keep the buildings together to create some density, but it is too small for a city of 1m, and in one of the aerial shots shows some buildings in the distance. Why is there such a large open car park next to these buildings on the edge of the core?? Needs something new, most buildings seem to be from decades ago. Nicer than I had seen in previous pics though, good luck with Bricktown!!

TStorm1978
April 5th, 2004, 07:02 AM
The buildings in the distance are part of the northwest business district, developed when builders wanted high-rise office buildings overlooking Lake Hefner in northwest OKC. The large open car park next to the central core was once to be developed as a huge shopping mall, but the mall did not materialize after the OKC's economic collapse of 1984. An upscale mall (Penn Square Mall) was built in 1988 (remodeled 2001) a few miles northwest of downtown OKC. All that was left was the car lot that was supposed to be for the downtown mall, but is not being converted into a high-rise parking garage, and the new downtown library was built on the northern section. A lot will be happening with downtown OKC's skyline soon, and its density gives developers a perfect opportunity to add artistically to our skyline.

TStorm1978
April 5th, 2004, 07:06 AM
Pardon my last post, the open car lot is NOW being converted into a highrise parking garage, and this garage will not be your average multilevel box, the new garage will feature intricate designs to enhance the downtown area. Those aerial pictures were copyrighted in 1998, however, judging by some of what is absent from those pictures, and the fact that in one of the pictures the Murrah Federal Building is still there, these photographs are more than a decade old.

nice building, i think it would do more for the city if it were downtown. it would help create an image.

unfortunately, oklahoma city has to compete with skylines of cities like dallas, st. louis, pittsburgh, and other large cities (typically ones that have professional sports teams), and i think that oklahoma city is not quite at their level yet, as a city. the skyline, when compared to other large cities, is pretty nice, and i give it a 7.5. okc is doing a god job trying to get over the hump and become a first-rate us city.

Bleh, Oklahoma is alright, it's like Rice Crispies without the milk. While the cereal is better with milk and sugar, it just taste plain. According to the skyline, it is not much of a fantastic thing you see, but still, the city manages to bring in support. I am not feeling the skylines in some of the photos, maybe the downtown cores are much better than expected, but overal detail, this city isn't in my category. 5/10.

The red building is Union Plaza, OKC's 14th tallest. What you can't see is that Union Plaza is right on the edge of OKC's northwestern highrise district. So it's okay that it's not downtown, because it adds to our second skyline (which includes two of our top ten buildings.) I've been meaning to go down and take some good pictures of the NW Expressway skyline since you never see a picture of it anywhere online.

You've probably seen the aerial urban photography of Kc-photos.com in the past, and he's finally done Oklahoma City. In some of these shots you can see the midrises beyond downtown.

Looking Northeast - Downtown in the front, The Triangle construction sites just past downtown, and research parks northeast of downtown.
http://photos.***************/kcphotos/okc/IMG_0667_sized.jpg

Looking Northwest - Bricktown in the foreground, then the CBD, with Midtown's midrises in the background and top right.
http://photos.***************/kcphotos/okc/IMG_0675_sized.jpg

Finally, another picture of the suburban highrise district on the northwest side, near Lake Hefner. This area has recently seen a tremendous falling in office vacancy rates after one office building (the 20 story circular black and white one) became ready for a conversion to apartments and several new companies leased space.

8.0 for density and position.

Should definitely increase with a new signature tower or two, which is expected to be announced shortly along with some additional residential towers!

OKC's downtown skyline may be rather smallish overall but for a 1.3M metro it is not bad at all. especially when you consider that OKC has a suburban skyline to the NW as well.

Definitely a big city feel downtown, especially when you're in it with that density of office space (see some of the street pics, it'd be hard pressed from the buildings in those shots not to think you were in a MUCH larger city). Like was said, some of the pics don't really do it justice as in person on the street it is pretty impressive.

Crimson, there area about 5 skyscraper proposals floating around downtown. The one which is most firm is coming from Devon Energy, an Oklahoma City based Oil/Gas firm which already is spread throughout downtown. We should see/hear something within the next year. We're all hoping that Devon's tower is a new signature tower that takes the tallest in the state.

There is also a mixed use tower that has hit the street, I think everyone is waiting for this most recent wave of downtown development (ie, housing this time) to conclude in a year or so then we'd probably see much higher demand due to the existing vacant commercial space geting absorbed.

Big Jim, yes OKC's skyline does remind you of LA (smallish but somewhat impressive) prior to the buildup that we see LA today. But you do have to admit, it is a nice cluster and would have been bigger if not for the suburban "high-rise cluster/district" that OKC has to the NW of downtown. If all of the buildings were downtown and/or if urban renewal would not have torn down so much (and so far not replaced :ohno: ), then downtown would be much more impressive already.

There's no unique things about the skyline, it doesn't stand out from the other skylines.

This panoramic does a pretty good job showing the skyline from the Art District on the west side, to the CBD, to Bricktown/Deep Deuce, and the Medical District on the east.

A feeling of the many rural areas that are still scattered within the city limits of OKC, and a view of the skyline showing Midtown on the left (north) and the CBD .

Nice pics on those!

shane, please be a cool dude and give credit to the photographers if you can (the big pano is mine.)

i'm going with a very solid 8.5 on this one...if those towers to the north were closer to downtown it'd be a 9ish. nice density, height for the size, quality and variety, from neo-classical to art deco to modern to shiny glass shardsy.

A solid 7.5. Love the density of our downtown.

Devon Energy, headquarted in Downtown OKC has just announced a new skyscraper for Downtown. It is to be 1 million square ft, iconic for OKC, and to be the tallest.

Yep, downtown Oklahoma City is very dense and looks great. Yet I agree, for a city of 1.4M people it could use about 5 more towers over 500 feet, at least one being in the 700 foot range.

It looks like this will be answered, with Devon soon to announce their tower. And we've been promised it will 'not be disappointing' from a skyscraper enthusiast prospective - meaning? most likely will be the state's tallest tower (would have to eclipse 667 feet to do so). They also promise the skyscraper will be iconic - which should give OKC lots of cred.

So while downtown OKC probably is a good 7.0-7.5 now, I'd anticipate the rating to significantly rise to the 8.0 or 8.5 level after its completion and the infill that's u/c at the moment.

I think some people may even expect too much of OKC because of it's name, but remember - this city is only 1.4M and has to compete with the juggernaut Dallas-Ft Worth (only 200 miles away), Kansas City (300 miles away), Houston (400 miles away), Denver (600 miles away) [all of these cities are larger and close enough to make life 'hard' for OKC; yet times are changing].

And in reality, OKC is not bad for a 1.4M city (having two clearly defined skylines and considering it's competition) and is only getting better. :)

I love those photos, SRG..

I really think OKC is one city that is unfairly hated. The only things I've been able to find wrong with it is its suburban sprawl and traffic congestion..really making it the typical US metro area. OKC's downtown is really cool. The skyline keeps looking better and better as they clean it up, and now the 925 foot tall addition that's on its way will really change things around Oklahoma.

OKC is an old boom town with a lot of really cool urbanism that is finally coming back to life. Architects and planners there have a really neat perspective on what the American city should be, and they take a lot of pride in their downtown area. It seems like they're trying return to a turn-of-the-century vintage approach to city building before WWII and massive freeways to the suburbs.

As for the skyline, it's great for a city of only 1.2 million or so. And the new skyscrapers being built also boost up the rating.. I give it an 8/10.

Would you even be able to tell what state Oklahoma City is in if it weren't for your rude awakening?

Not to sound harsh, but I'm just saying, that might not be much of a loss. Aside from the downtown bombing, I doubt people in Seattle knew anything about OKC. Most people probably thought it was the size of Amarillo..which is 1/8th the real size of OKC.

No one ever would have guessed OKC was an important enough and large enough city to compete for an NBA franchise.

I see a lot of comments saying it's disappointing/underwhelming/small for an MSA of this size. Not really sure what cities people are thinking of, because it seems pretty comparable:

Oklahoma City:

Salt Lake City:

Hartford:

Louisville:

IMO only Louisville and New Orleans have better skylines. Maybe Salt Lake but only because of the mountain backdrop.

Also, here is a partial skyline shot with the Devon Tower included (that hasn't already been posted in this thread):

^^ Yea, all those you posted are comparable skylines except New Orleans!I think that skyline is on a level higher! some other pix of N.O. are just massive looking!

but when you consider that OKC is bigger than all of those cities, .....

I can see where people are coming from.

OKC should be competing with a different crowd, not the third tier. OKC should at least be the same as New Orleans's skyline.

^^^^So you think OKC is a tier Two city? I think OKC is almost there! OKC's population maybe equal to or greater than all those cities, but N.O. and SLC are a step ahead! SLC has an airport that is a hub,and the city is an Olympic city, and The mountains are there for tourism! New Orleans has One of the busiest ports around, a tourism industry that is 5 fold of that from OKC's,but I can see where you are coming from as well!

nice building, i think it would do more for the city if it were downtown. it would help create an image.

unfortunately, oklahoma city has to compete with skylines of cities like dallas, st. louis, pittsburgh, and other large cities (typically ones that have professional sports teams), and i think that oklahoma city is not quite at their level yet, as a city. the skyline, when compared to other large cities, is pretty nice, and i give it a 7.5. okc is doing a god job trying to get over the hump and become a first-rate us city.

^^since you posted this a few years ago,What do you think now with The NBA in town and The Devon Tower being built?

LOLS! You two are funny. Oklahoma City has an average skyline, then again it is a mid-size American city that is landlocked. With the new skyscraper being built, I hope more skyscrapers will come soon. For now, I give it a modest 6.5/10. I'll probably give it higher than that by the time Devon Headquarters finish construction

Nothing special for now. But when Devon HQ is finished watch out. Hopefully it'll start a lot more vertical construction.

Some developers from Houston just recently bought up The old Ford dealership lot in downtown and plan to build a mix use building and whenever The new convention center is built I would expect a highrise hotel also!I hope The Devon tower spurs more vertical development!
