View Full Version : Streets of Tokyo - Ueno

Ueno used to be a working class district of Tokyo, where many migrants
from northern Japan used to live. Things have improved since then: the area
nearby the train station has seen some redevelopment with many
department stores attracting a new and younger clientele. While it does not
have the refinement of Ginza or Omotesando, Ueno has its special charm.
Here are a few of the pictures I took within a 1km radius of the station on a
friday evening:

Cool pics.I always liked the Ueno area. The walk down form the station to Akihabara via the Rail viaduct was interesting. It almost had an Asian feel to it with all those market shops

Well, so much of modern Tokyo is built up nowadays that it feels like every other industrialised country, with the same glass-and-concrete shops and window displays.

Those pictures you posted of Ameyoko - with all the seafood and vegetables out in front of the shops - I think that is the sort of thing that is fading away.

That are very good pictures. I like to see some "normal" pictures of people lifes. Please show us some more.

:? Isn't Japan asian?

Japan is Aisan. But its kind of Different. Its been modern for over 150 years and has a culture very distinctive to other countries in the region.

Japan is certainly not better than other countries in Aisa. Its just a little different. The longer I live here the more I think that Japan isnt really part of Aisa.Much like Britain is to Europe.

Everytime I travel to Asian countries I feel more and more like this.

I agree Japan is to Asia what Britain is to Europe: this is a very good analogy. Indeed, the two share many similarities ;).

Amazing pics to both of you @princeofseoul, @ray!
Just got back from Ueno to buy food stuff at Ameyoko and boy was it crowded!
Everybody was trying to squeeze in between crowds to get hold of fresh tuna, prawns, egg roe, big red octopus and some meat cuts and spices from Oriental stores.
The experience was exhausting and rewarding at the same time....

For some reason, Ive never liked Ueno. Actually, I dont really care for the entire Yamanote from Tabata to Akiba. Im not sure why, it just feels far less lively and much more seedy than, say, Komagome down through Baba. Everytime I go to Nippori or Uguisudani, the platforms always have the strangest looking (and behaving!) people, at any time of day or night. And Ueno Park is dirty as all hell compared to Yoyogi.

I hate that area too. They are dirty and gloomy, often look like some kind of slum. North Eastern parts of Tokyo are seedy as hell. For example riding on Keisei Line from Narita Airport, you can clearly see a bunch of rotten houses and apartments all the way up to Ueno. Horrible.

In fact Ueno as an entertainment and shopping district is something you should definitely avoid to, it's got a vulgar and shabby working class environment.

It aint luxurious, pretty cool though, i kinda feel like the entire country is cool, at least from what i've seen, i really like it.

Depends on what type of person you are. If you're working class blue collar, or old fashioned, you'd probably like the shitamachi area (Ueno, Asakusa, etc). Life is simpler, the people are still friendly and don't care about what background you came from, and you're friends with your neighborhood. If you're a white collar suburbanite, you probably go to the fashion areas like the western half of the Yamanote Line or Ginza. You probably don't start random conversations with people you see on the street, and most of your friends probably don't live near you.

It's just two different worlds.

I'm not a fan of that area either except for Ueno's Toshougu, I love it there.
