View Full Version : Independent Quebec
Lostboy November 7th, 2005, 06:42 PM Of all the seperatist movements in the Western Nations, only Quebec has any real chance of success within the next ten years. What can we expect to see from an Independent Quebec? What sort of policies? What kind of a nation? Would it vary significantly from Canada? How would it change the wider make up of North America?
Would it be the beginning of the end for Canada?
ssiguy2 November 7th, 2005, 08:05 PM No, it would be the renewal of the ROC.
Canada has been bending over to Quebec and it has alienated many and lead to Western alienation and Ontario resentment.
Canada would put their foot down, demand a direct route to the Atlantic provinces thru what would be Canadian land. A very small strip just for a freeway.
Pay your 24% of Canada's debt and get out. The problem being that there are key areas that would not want to go, namely Gatineau, WestMontreal, and the far north.
I think Quebec might be surprised to find out that Canada will be quite non-diplomatic.
I don't want Quebec to go but I think its time it did. For the sake of Canada, she has to. Separation is strong in Alberta and lesser extent BC and Quebec's non-stop demands are making it worse.
Some times you have to cut off a limb to save the body.
Ontario would probably be changed into GTA, SouthWest, NCR. and East/North.
In other words, the new capitols would be Toronto, London, Ottawa, and Kingston.
I could see much of western Ontario joining Manitoba.
I use to fear Quebec's separation, then be somewhat upset but now, I just wish they would go.
I have, like millions of Canadians resigned themselves to it so get on with it, on OUR terms.
habsfan November 7th, 2005, 08:07 PM At the risk of starting another "separation" thread that'll end up in the trash, i'll try to answer your questions.
If Québec were to separate, it would resemble Canada in many aspects, but would have some major differences.
Québec is a more liberal place than most of Canada. Now i'm not saying that Canada is conservative...i'm just saying that Quebeckers are generally more liberal socially speaking.
Obviously there would be the fact that it would be a French country with an English minority.
It would look to establish strong links with Canada and the US and opbviously join NAFTA. (please could we not jump on the "CANADA and the US wouldn't allow Québec entry into NAFTA", because we all know that is bull-sh.it! Money talks and we trade too much with Ontario and New England to be Ignored!)
and Last but not least, i'd finally have a place to call home!
habsfan November 7th, 2005, 08:09 PM "Canada would put their foot down, demand a direct route to the Atlantic provinces thru what would be Canadian "
And why would Québec accept these terms if Canada is gonna be so "non-diplomatic"?
DonQui November 7th, 2005, 08:10 PM Why should Canada have to kiss Quebec's ass so much. It has already done a lot more than most multinational states (such as Spain, the UK, and France itself) have been willing to do for their minority constituents.
habsfan November 7th, 2005, 08:13 PM I don'T know why Canada kisses our ass...they should just let us go...but the liberals seem to want to keep fighting...when they know it's just a matter of time.

It kisses Quebec's ass because it is treating Quebec like the child that it can be sometimes. Just like a mother would deal with a spoiled brat.
Frankly, Canada should throw Quebec out the door and see how this francophone island in the middle of a sea with 300 million English speakers, 330 million Spanish speakers, and 180 million Portuguese speakers does.

Yes it should...we'll be OK

why risk it? You are more than OK now as a part of Canada. You get more than most provinces from the federal government and are allowed to discriminate against English with the Language Gestapo, all the while enjoying the stability of Canada and the markets it provides.
What more could you possible want.
malek November 7th, 2005, 10:00 PM ^^ bullshit.
close this thread already, where is the mod!?!?!?

How is it bullshit? These are things that most Canadians bring up as well, as well as heard first hand from anglophones studying in McGill having to deal with discrimination against English.
habsfan November 7th, 2005, 10:35 PM OMG. Discrimination by poor students at McGill. What a load of Crock. The english residents in montreal are treated just fine.
What more do I want? A country. that's what I want.
malek November 7th, 2005, 10:42 PM don't bother man.
