Good question. The island was built by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1920 though I do not know if it was known as "star island" at the time. It was home in its early days to Al Capone, the Duke of Windsor, and King Edward the VIII. I found an article from 1924 in which the island was refered to as "star island". It was aparently built with that name (before the stars moved there). It was also apparently the first fill island created by bulkdeading an open water area.

I'm not sure of the genisis of the name Star Island. But there are some fantastic photos of the Biscayne Bay/Star, Hibiscus, Palm, Venetians in the book "Miami: Then and Now". That book is a must have for any Miami resident.
I just heard a talk from Dr. Paul George today...the foremost authority on Miami history. This guy is amazing! He teaches a class on Thursday nights at Miami Dade college (in addition to many publications). Check this out http://www.historical-museum.org
We ought to do a ssc meeting at Hooter's and hire Dr. PG to give us a river tour!!!!

Also, Al Capone lived on Palm Island, not Star...my friend lived in his former house before my friend moved to LA. That home has now been demolished.

Where is it, is it its own city?

its in between miami and miami beach,in biscayne bay, and is connected by bridge....i believe that the islands are the property of the city of miami beach and are heavily under survillance, because of the amount of money that lives there.

Palm, Hibiscus and Star Island are man made islands in the Biscayne Bay accessible by I-395. I lived on Palm for about 5 years and it is nice, would you believe that I rented a 3 bedroom house with a garage and big fenced yard for $1,100 per month in 1992?!??
These islands are not private. You may drive in to look around if you so desire!!! This is unlike Bay Point or Indian Creek where the residents of the private communities pay for their own roads and sewer.

Roark

Correct. Fisher Island it now only accessible by the Fisher Island Ferry, boat, or helicopter. I used to be a part of the Miami Peninsula until the Army Corps of Engineers dredged/carved Government Cut. Fisher Island was formerly owned by Miami's first Black Millionaire and he sold it to Carl Fisher, who then traded it to the Vanderbilts for a yacht! Fisher Island was the summer home of the Vanderbilt's and their original mansion is now the spa and meeting spaces of the residents of the island. Residents include, the Sultan of Brunei, Opra Winfrey, Wayne Huzinga, Carl Ichan, and plenty of other famous celebrities and business leaders.

Enrique Iglesias actually lives in Bay Point, on Sabal Palm Road, and has a second home on North Bay Road.

And to think that in 1986, a home on Star Island cost "only" $600,000.

A friend of my family actually lives on Star Island; direct neighbors to Rosie Odonell; moral of the story is that it is a really upper class place and Rosie is audible to the entire island. lol. (I heard what may have actually been her; her voice is hard to mistake)
