Some information about the city:
Komotini used to be uninportant Thrace city in the past, young people was leaving the city for university in Athens or Thessaloniki or finding a job. But as I am told, Thrace University changed the destiny of this city. Yes, native people are mostly people of the main markets and dealers at the shops. Plus the villagers wich are coming from the villages around the city. But now, city is a point of atraction. Young people come here for the university from all around of Greece, plus abroad.

I am sure you wouldn't like the universty if you saw. Some buildings wich are away from eachother in front of agriculture fields. But, BUT, Universty represents you many opportunities, more than others... reseacrhing opportunities on some facts that you can't find anywhere. Good master programs. An international surround (you can't see so many foreign students anywhere else, beside Greeks, Serbs, Bulgarians, Turks, Romanians, Russians ect...) Free food 3 times everyday, free transportation till the late ours of the night, free hostel. Spending less money possibilities...

After all these, students started to come to the city and cafes, clubs, bubs, restaurants and of course such stores like Kosmopolis have bene openned.

Beyond these facts... Komotini is famous with coffee :) you buy the best coffee. You can see the lines of people in front of the coffee shops ( that I was amazed). I bought some coffee of course, but I wish I would buy more...BTW 1 kilo cofee is 5 EURO...

Thanks for the pics and Info, Kuvvaci. Guys, if I remember correctly, in this ODEON-Kosmopolis centre, above the ground level, there were built many rooms to be used as studios by the students of the university. Also, I am not sure wherer, along with the centre, a number of residential buildings were also built in the rear side of the centre.

In any case, it looks like a nice town and I am glad to see that other cities besides Athens are developing like that.

I have nothing against statues but is there a law in Greece that states they must all have one or both arms pointing at the sky?? (you know like the law that restricts building heights or the other law which forces every hotel in Greece to be prefixed or suffixed by "PALACE" :bash: )

Most statues in Greece make their subject look like soviet crackpots. Until someone said this was Venizelos I thought it a tribute to Stalin.

Can someone please tell Greek sculptors to take it easy with the soviet socialist realism please.

Komotini and Xanthi are the places where i served my military duty. I have to say i prefer Xanthi as a city by far. komotini has some places where you can find delicious turkish food. To this day, that is what i remember the most and the first thing i will do when i visit the city again. i highly recommend to do some searhing there and find these places, you will thank me.

Apart from that, i can not say i enjoyed the city as much as Xanthi. Both have good night life but Xanthi simpy looks amazing. Both can be viciously cold in the winter and i also highly recommend visiting the villages to the North of those cities, mostly Xanthi again. You will be amazed by the beauty of the scenery. just make sure you visit those mountains after winter or you will freeze to death. Seriously. i still have nightmares about those cold days over there...

P.S. Did i mention how cold it can get? :)

well in fact I won't. I know that page but there is only a brief information. I was wondering if it possible to find any other accomodation in Komotini except student hostels, for example in privat houses? It is important for me, because my friend wants to visit me, and as far as I know she wouldn't be allowed to stay with my in the student hostel.
I would also like to find out how do Erasmus students attend their courses in DUTH? As far as I know all courses are taught in Greek, so I was wondering, what kind of assigments do we have to prepare?
I've got also questions about living in Komotini, and in that page I can't find anything about it:/

I lived for 5 months in Komotini for my Erasmus student exchange with two of my best friends. The best time of my life ! We had a room at the panepistimiopoli. Every night party...starting with some beers at Alavastro and ending up in Enzo, Must or Lobby.

I've been half a year back home in Ollandia again, but still miss Greece...especially Komotini of course. The first sentence we learned was 'Komotini Komotini, py iene sabba to mouni!'

This building does look like something you'd find in North America. Nice one! And the other preserved and restored buildings are beautiful and impressive also!

Τον εμπορικό χάρτη της Θράκης φιλοδοξεί να ανανεώσει το εμπορικό πάρκο της εταιρείας ανάπτυξης, επένδυσης και διαχείρισης ακινήτων “Vita Development”, που αναμένεται να ξεκινήσει το πρώτο τρίμηνο του 2010 στον Ίασμο Κομοτηνής.

Το ύψος της επένδυσης θα αγγίξει τα 55 εκατ. ευρώ, όπως εξηγεί ο διευθύνων σύμβουλος της εταιρείας Αιμίλιος Αλεξιάδης, υπογραμμίζοντας ότι το εμπορικό πάρκο θα έχει υπερτοπικό χαρακτήρα και θα απευθύνεται σε ζώνη επιρροής 1 εκατ. κατοίκων από τη Θράκη, την Ανατολική Μακεδονία και τη Νότια Βουλγαρία.
Το “Iasmos Park”, που θα υλοποιηθεί σε έκταση 320 στρμ. στον κόμβο Ιάσμου της Εγνατίας οδού, στο μέσον της διαδρομής Κομοτηνή-Ξάνθη, αναμένεται να ολοκληρωθεί εντός 18 μηνών από την έναρξη των εργασιών.
Η διοίκηση της “Vita Development” επέλεξε την περιοχή της Κομοτηνής για την ανάπτυξη του εμπορικού της πάρκου προκειμένου να υπάρξει και περιφερειακή ανάπτυξη, καθώς, όπως επισημαίνει, μέχρι σήμερα όλο το εμπορικό παιχνίδι παίζεται σε Αθήνα και Θεσσαλονίκη.

“Το εμπορικό πάρκο, που βασίζεται στην πράσινη τεχνολογία και είναι συμβατό με τους κανόνες της αειφόρου ανάπτυξης, θα αναπτυχθεί σε περίπου 60.000 τ.μ.”, υπογραμμίζει ο κ. Αλεξιάδης. Στο κέντρο θα κυριαρχεί το υγρό στοιχείο και το πράσινο ενώ η χρήση φωτοβολταϊκών θα το κάνει φιλικό προς το περιβάλλον. Σημειώνεται ότι η έκταση του οικοπέδου, το οποίο μίσθωσε η εταιρεία για 60 χρόνια από τον δήμο Ιάσμου, είναι 320 στρμ.
Η πλειονότητα των χώρων που θα υλοποιηθούν -τα 50.000 τ.μ.- θα αξιοποιηθούν από τέσσερις μεγάλους χρήστες, μεταξύ των οποίων το ΙΚΕΑ, ενώ στα υπόλοιπα 10.000 τ.μ. θα κατασκευαστούν περίπου 50 καταστήματα. Τα καταστήματα θα εκτείνονται σε ένα επίπεδο ενώ το εμπορικό κέντρο θα διαθέτει 3.500 θέσεις στάθμευσης.

ΑΙΜΟΔΟΤΗΣ ΓΙΑ ΤΗΝ ΤΟΠΙΚΗ ΚΟΙΝΩΝΙΑ
Το “Iasmos Park” αναμένεται να αποτελέσει αιμοδότη για την τοπική κοινωνία, καθώς θα δημιουργήσει, σύμφωνα με τη διοίκηση της “Vita Development”, 1.200 θέσεις εργασίας. Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι το 70% των απασχολουμένων στο εμπορικό κέντρο θα είναι δημότες Ιάσμου.
H “Vita Development”, αν και εδρεύει στην Αθήνα, υλοποιεί, κατά κύριο λόγο, έργα στην περιφέρεια. Έτσι, εκτός από το εμπορικό κέντρο στον Ίασμο σε εξέλιξη έχει έργα σε Ιωάννινα, Λάρισα και Σόφια. Θα πρέπει να σημειωθεί ότι στην τελική ευθεία βρίσκεται η κατασκευή του ΙΚΕΑ στα Ιωάννινα.

That is what I was thinking about as well. Given the current hight restrictions I doubt whether this tower will actually be built.
