it was built to compliment the boa tower, it along with the IJL financial center are meant to be a "family" of skyscrapers with the boa the "father" the hearst the "mother" and the IJL the "son"

Yes, the Bank of America 'family' is much more impressive than the Wachovia 'family' of One, Two, and Three Wachovia along with Wachovia Center...although One and Three Wachovia aren't bad...in fact, I think I might just do another thread on One Wachovia...

10 Small Charlotte can be proud to have one of the best collection of skyscrapers in the United States. This tower plays off Bank of America so perfectly. A very intricate design... it looks like it's blooming like a new flower towards the top. BRILLIANT!

Strange that most Dutch forumers seem to hate this building! ;)

As for me, I like it, albeit with some reservations: the chopped off roof is unfortunate, and I don't like the rounded glass at the corners. On the other hand, I like the strong vertical lines.

Since the positive outweighs the negative I'll give it an 8. :)

Whoever made the comment about our fellow forum writers from the Netherlands was right on target. There seems to be something about it this building that offends the Nederlander. They seem to form a striking minority. From a professional perspective, I'd like to know if it's a cultural thing?

Look at how similar the glass on the Hearst Tower is to the Bank of America Tower!! :D Could be mistaken for a twin of the BoA!

I think the glass is great and it compliments the Charlotte skyline well but still i don't like how the facade looks.. Very clean look but the blue glass just dosen't fit that cladding! :bash:

Of all the skyscrapers in the world built in the last 5 years, there are just two which deserve a 10.0 rating...one is the Swiss Re Tower in London, the other one is the Hearst Tower.

Simply a masterpiece!

Interesting ... the shape seems a bit 'top heavy', but that's my only real complaint. The roof is interesting and there's a good level of detailing in the facade. The building also has a clean, modern, fresh look about it. Nice.

9/10 - Impressive! There's a good contrast between trim and windows, and GLORY HAL-LEL-U-JAH! somebody rediscovered how to really use set backs to best advantage, and went beyond the flat roof! The way the main tower springs from the set backs, and the gently curved central sections, with their strong vertical sweep, help the height, and the way the mullions stand out from the glass gives the facade depth, and allows for a lot of interplay between light and shadow. All in all, a very good example of what I'm always going on about, unity without monotony and variety without chaos.

The only nit I'll pick is that they might have ended the roof with a slender spire...

And it does really go well with the BOA, doesn't it? Memo to Peter Eisenman: This is what context REALLY means, dude - it's a lot more than just being the same height!

7/10...The blue glass is refreshing and shiny. The sides are great, but I hate the top, too detailed and out of form.

I agree that the building seems nice, but there is definitely something about it which bothers me.

When I saw it in renderings, it seemed pretty interesting and cool... But once I saw it on the skyline and up close, I just didn't care for it nearly as much. The building has an overbearing, almost "get away from me" feel to it, because of the outward bow of the facade, and outward tilt of the blue glass mass. The bulky finistrations and knife edged cornices add to the effect considerably. It's like the building was designed to be brutish, while trying to be cute at the same time. The hearst reminds me of a Batman villian; evil, yet clownish.

And I agree about the top. It's as if the architect didn't know how to finish off the mass created by the inverted pyramidal form. The solution seems ackward and out of scale IMO.

However, one area where I understand it to be of high regard is in its functional use, where the layout of the trading spaces and floorplates are both attractive and usable. The inclusion of ground level retail is certainly a plus.

It's a functional tower, which is attractive to some but kitchy and contrived to others. However, part of the allure is because it was designed in context to the statuesque BofA which, like a beautiful woman at a party, makes everything around it better by mere proximity. The Hearst is definitely no BofA.

8/10 at a distance it looks like a giant stake in the ground. but i like it. the sides without the glass cornering looks like a throwback to the old 1930's towers and its done very very well. I almost think that it didn't need such a gimicky add on as the bulging outward corners. very nice for charlotte. And kudos on making your towers match one another.
