Thats a rather unusual looking building, but its nice and refreshing. It also complements the BOA very well. Great pics!
sOmeOne March 1st, 2003, 05:11 AM I give it a 10 :okay:
Wu-Gambino March 1st, 2003, 09:09 AM 8/10
Very nice.
renell March 1st, 2003, 04:01 PM it really blends it with its neighbor Bank of America. 7.5
easleygwave06 March 1st, 2003, 04:03 PM it was built to compliment the boa tower, it along with the IJL financial center are meant to be a "family" of skyscrapers with the boa the "father" the hearst the "mother" and the IJL the "son"
SteelCity32 March 1st, 2003, 06:03 PM nice building, cool glass...
9/10
nostyle March 2nd, 2003, 07:07 AM Yes, the Bank of America 'family' is much more impressive than the Wachovia 'family' of One, Two, and Three Wachovia along with Wachovia Center...although One and Three Wachovia aren't bad...in fact, I think I might just do another thread on One Wachovia...
Bobdreamz March 4th, 2003, 09:58 PM stunning.....one of the most beautiful towers in North America.
The Messiah March 15th, 2003, 03:04 AM Looks like this tower is gonne sting you, looks dangerous :jippo:
This one has some class..
9.0/10
Evergrey April 8th, 2003, 07:58 PM 10 Small Charlotte can be proud to have one of the best collection of skyscrapers in the United States. This tower plays off Bank of America so perfectly. A very intricate design... it looks like it's blooming like a new flower towards the top. BRILLIANT!
BGT May 11th, 2003, 12:00 AM 8/10
New Jack City May 11th, 2003, 03:54 AM 7/10...The blue glass is refreshing and shiny. The sides are great, but I hate the top, too detailed and out of form.
Chad May 11th, 2003, 04:48 AM Hearst Tower is stunningly beutiful. The Master of the Neo-gothic for the 21st century!...10/10

Mr. Detroit May 11th, 2003, 06:47 AM Charlotte has an excellent collection of newer buildings, and this is one of them. This is an absolutley gorgeous building....10
Fiddlerontheruf May 11th, 2003, 08:51 AM 9/10. Very unique and friendly. Doesn't have a "cold" corperate look, IMO.

Patrick September 4th, 2003, 08:06 PM 9,5
would be 10 if this tower was taller or less thin ;)
Monkey September 20th, 2003, 09:57 AM Strange that most Dutch forumers seem to hate this building! ;)
As for me, I like it, albeit with some reservations: the chopped off roof is unfortunate, and I don't like the rounded glass at the corners. On the other hand, I like the strong vertical lines.
Since the positive outweighs the negative I'll give it an 8. :)
Labrador September 30th, 2003, 07:37 PM 9.5/10
The blue glass is stunning, and the shape of the tower is interesting; I like how when looking up at the tower, it is split in two, with both halves at slightly different angles.
Imperfect Ending October 1st, 2003, 09:53 AM 8
I like it. I like the gothic feel to it
Jarmo K October 4th, 2003, 03:43 PM Looks amazing next to the Bank of America. 8/10
UrbanDesigner October 7th, 2003, 05:57 AM Whoever made the comment about our fellow forum writers from the Netherlands was right on target. There seems to be something about it this building that offends the Nederlander. They seem to form a striking minority. From a professional perspective, I'd like to know if it's a cultural thing?
FloTownballer November 1st, 2003, 08:58 AM I love that building that my second favorite in charlotte
baqthier November 1st, 2003, 02:44 PM Looks so not USA :D

TropicalSQ744 November 7th, 2003, 02:16 PM Look at how similar the glass on the Hearst Tower is to the Bank of America Tower!! :D Could be mistaken for a twin of the BoA!
I think the glass is great and it compliments the Charlotte skyline well but still i don't like how the facade looks.. Very clean look but the blue glass just dosen't fit that cladding! :bash:

I went into the lobby of this building and it is very cool. I love the weird star-like chandeliers (sp?) above the elevators.
The design I think is an eye catcher :D

asian_horizon May 6th, 2004, 06:17 AM very unique, its not square with lines. its architectural lines are on a tangent. it looks like castle style
mhe-ann May 13th, 2004, 07:41 AM I like this one...cool, nice glass, simple design yet refreshing. 9/10
Jase Calvin May 13th, 2004, 07:16 PM I like it. It relates with the BOA well. PoMo can become cheesy if not done properly but this turned out marvelously. Looks like it belongs in a Batman movie.

Had no idea this city had some thing like this
UrbanDesigner August 19th, 2004, 11:13 PM Simply brilliant addition to an already dynamic skyline. As good as this building looks against the background of the sky, it really truimphs at the ground level.

R@ptor November 2nd, 2004, 05:26 PM Of all the skyscrapers in the world built in the last 5 years, there are just two which deserve a 10.0 rating...one is the Swiss Re Tower in London, the other one is the Hearst Tower.
Simply a masterpiece!
Monkey November 13th, 2004, 03:24 PM Interesting ... the shape seems a bit 'top heavy', but that's my only real complaint. The roof is interesting and there's a good level of detailing in the facade. The building also has a clean, modern, fresh look about it. Nice.
8/10
TYW March 8th, 2005, 10:20 AM interesting building. especially the top:D

Reflex March 9th, 2005, 10:16 PM I guess I don't really like it! 6.5/10.
Liz L March 9th, 2005, 10:40 PM 9/10 - Impressive! There's a good contrast between trim and windows, and GLORY HAL-LEL-U-JAH! somebody rediscovered how to really use set backs to best advantage, and went beyond the flat roof! The way the main tower springs from the set backs, and the gently curved central sections, with their strong vertical sweep, help the height, and the way the mullions stand out from the glass gives the facade depth, and allows for a lot of interplay between light and shadow. All in all, a very good example of what I'm always going on about, unity without monotony and variety without chaos.
The only nit I'll pick is that they might have ended the roof with a slender spire...
And it does really go well with the BOA, doesn't it? Memo to Peter Eisenman: This is what context REALLY means, dude - it's a lot more than just being the same height!
icy March 13th, 2005, 05:13 AM nice design
me,myself and I March 31st, 2005, 04:21 AM 7/10
with parents like these the "son" should look OK
I would throw some totally different building in that mix
MattSal April 1st, 2005, 01:27 AM Looks pretty damn cool. Goes well with BOA as well. I give it a 9/10. :D
Medo April 1st, 2005, 06:56 AM a magnificent beauty, 10/10
Chibcha2k April 1st, 2005, 07:22 AM 9/10 awesome combo with BofA
Jasonhouse April 1st, 2005, 07:16 PM 7/10...The blue glass is refreshing and shiny. The sides are great, but I hate the top, too detailed and out of form.
I agree that the building seems nice, but there is definitely something about it which bothers me.
When I saw it in renderings, it seemed pretty interesting and cool... But once I saw it on the skyline and up close, I just didn't care for it nearly as much. The building has an overbearing, almost "get away from me" feel to it, because of the outward bow of the facade, and outward tilt of the blue glass mass. The bulky finistrations and knife edged cornices add to the effect considerably. It's like the building was designed to be brutish, while trying to be cute at the same time. The hearst reminds me of a Batman villian; evil, yet clownish.
And I agree about the top. It's as if the architect didn't know how to finish off the mass created by the inverted pyramidal form. The solution seems ackward and out of scale IMO.
However, one area where I understand it to be of high regard is in its functional use, where the layout of the trading spaces and floorplates are both attractive and usable. The inclusion of ground level retail is certainly a plus.
It's a functional tower, which is attractive to some but kitchy and contrived to others. However, part of the allure is because it was designed in context to the statuesque BofA which, like a beautiful woman at a party, makes everything around it better by mere proximity. The Hearst is definitely no BofA.
6.5/10
superskyline May 1st, 2005, 08:36 PM So awesome! Such a unique fresh look, has so many details and features to it!
9/10:):)
QueenCityDrag May 5th, 2005, 07:01 AM I wonder if it would look better if they plated the roof in copper? It would clash less
Phobos May 6th, 2005, 12:41 AM 8.5/10
Very unusual yet pretty design, and fits well close to BoA Corporate Center.
Minneapolitan May 11th, 2005, 06:09 AM This is one of those that seems like it would be quite impressive in person. I love how it fans out toward the top.

lancetop December 4th, 2005, 08:19 AM I rate Hearst Tower a strong and spirited 9.5:)
It's not a small building by any stretch of the imagination. But it exudes grace, dignity and regality. Beautifully juxtaposed with the Bank of America Corp.Tower, it lends the skyline pizazz and interest. I like this tower a lot!

Scruffy88 January 1st, 2006, 08:55 PM 8/10 at a distance it looks like a giant stake in the ground. but i like it. the sides without the glass cornering looks like a throwback to the old 1930's towers and its done very very well. I almost think that it didn't need such a gimicky add on as the bulging outward corners. very nice for charlotte. And kudos on making your towers match one another.

AHHHHH June 4th, 2006, 07:03 AM i do not like the proportions - the inverted corners make it seem too top heavy. The corners should go in to give the illusion of height. other than that, i really like the post modern/neo gothic facade
