Djurob i would be glad to help you but generally speaking it is too difficult to find reliable updated data about other fields except the population.(which because of the census is something easy to control its accuracy).
Not that they dont exist but it is not easy to find them in the internet.
Regarding the per capita income i will check the statistical service site but from what i know for sure , the whole region of Thessaloniki and the neighbouring perfectures are in the ~80% of EU25 GDP per capita (that means thessaloniki is out of the objective 1 for convergence , so it will get less money from EU the next years).

Thesaloniki looks kinda cool, but it needs a new waterfront¡¡¡

kostya
June 3rd, 2006, 10:56 AM
Funny that mostly foreigners see that. I have never seen a serious propose for buildings renovation on the waterfront. Expection may be a beautiful, partly glass-covered building, i think it's a hotel which is now being build, which should be an example for the next generation of the buildings there ;)

IS THIS THESSALONIKI?

http://www.airgreece.gr/contents/media/thessalonikiktel.jpg

According to our friend skylineearth as ut appears in stadia.gr it is... It doesn't look like it though, the difference has me jawdropping. Empty spaces, big buildings, a Northern European touch, or better, reminds a suburb of Istanbul on the highway to the International Airport. as I remember it.

This has to be Menemeni, as I have read. I... think I like it though, although I am impressed by the size of the buildings, the "mentality of the buildings layout arrangement... Impressive and unusual for Greece, very different...

I mean, look at this... !!!

skylinearth
June 6th, 2006, 08:23 PM
Yep, it's Thessaloniki. I felt the same surprise when I saw this photo because it's not something usual for Thessaloniki. There are still some blocks under construction. Also this photo is a bit old ( 1-2 years ), these empty spaces are not empty today.

Giorgio

Looks like Tirana in that pic but more wealthy with better infrastructure.

kostya
June 7th, 2006, 04:08 PM
You see empty spaces, mostly because of the role of the area, which was traditionally industrial. (you may notice some buildings left ;) ), but construction companies seem to realise the benefits of the area (close to: city center, port and national road, good infrastructure etc.) and try to transform it to a place friendly to the average citizen. (city gate mall, limani center, hotels, transportation hubs and others).

Thessaloniki at the crossroads που λένε.

Thessaloniki is breath-taking, beautiful, classy, stylish, warm, one of those cities you'd fall in love with

Thessaloniki vs Athens: Thessaloniki looks much better than Athens as the latter fails to embrace the sea while Thessaloniki has a great waterfront. Athens is chaotic and full of tasteless buildings that look alike and overall the city suffers a lack of urban architecture. It's a concrete pile with narrow streets. (no offense to anyone)

Thessaloniki vs Constantinopolis: Can't compare. Constantinopolis is shit, in spite of all its historical sites, it's mainly composed of horribly ugly suburbs with millions of poor, totally uneducated easterners. I can't see it recover before several decades, it's such a loser.

Thessaloniki vs Smyrna: Overall very similar indeed though Smyrna is a bigger city. Yet Thessaloniki looks better as old buildings are restorated properly, streets and parks are cleaner and people wealthier. Hoping if Turkish economy (ever) gets any better, Smyrna will look as good as Thessaloniki one day.

....

My mom's grandma was from Drama and my grandma, although never seen it, would tell us of Thessaloniki as she heard from her own mom. What's more it's similar to Smyrna, which I really like. These are the two reasons why I come to appreciate Thessaloniki so much.

Thessaloniki is extremely beautiful, but I think its largets problem is the government. Its seems to me to be abit of a neglected city with so much potential.

Its in one of the best locations in Europe being the gateway to the balkans and what not, also its waterfront is lovely.

Now with the new Metro and the new Airport lets hope that it definetly gets it way on the world stage.

Anyway, I have been to Istanbul, it certainly has breathtaking historical sites and the beautiful Bosphorus. I will visit this city again. But I do agree with you, there is indeed immense poverty (I was really shocked) and many "ugly" buildings.

On the other hand, this is very normal for such a huge city in a developing nation. I'm sure it will look a lot better in a few decades.

Yes I think It's ok now. As for the building, the construction of it started in 1926 and finished in 1934.

Today it is known as YMCA (ΧΑΝΘ in Greek) (It was established in 1921)

Great Photos NBMS 1, Thessaloniki contains a more diverse architectural heritage, than Athens. No doubt atributed to its strategic location on the banks of the Thermaic Gulf and status as significant city in the Byzantine and later Ottoman Empire. From my experiences of the City, I found it to be pleasant albeit at times chaotic. This is trully one of the Balkans great city's which for too long has been overshadowed by Athens. The city retains relics from every era of human occupation and should be promoted as an alterantive to Athens. It is shame that a city with so many natural advantages always appears to be looking south for direction. This City is one to watch out for in the coming decades. Looking forward to revisiting this grand and diverse city on my next trip to Greece :) .

I LOVE Thessaloniki. Every time I enter the train station (especially now, as this can happen only once or twice a year), I feel like I could just kneel down and kiss the ground. I don't feel this way about the place I was born (Montreal) or grew up (NYC), or my "roots" (Kefalonia). I don't know what it is about the city-I lived there from 1993-1999 with my ex-husband & our daughter was born in Thessaloniki in 1997-from the first moment I set foot, it was my favorite place in the world (at least, as of yet). It's not the romantic BS that you hear from a lot of people that have never actually lived there, "Oh Thessaloniki, what a nice place, the city of love etc."...it's just that walking on Egnatia (especially very early in the morning, when all the hotels still have their neon lights on), or on Tsimiski or on Mitropoleos/Proxenou Koromila, or in my old neighbourhood (Syggroy&Krystalli) I feel more at HOME than anywhere else:)

CLASS!

Very nice pics skyline. Just a couple of comments:

1) Graffiti is the most ugliest thing in greece after grey concrete oceans. There really needs to be some sort of nation wide or even macedonian state authority that cleans up this mess.

2) Why are there shots of asians and africans? Is that a novelty in greece? no...seriously.

3) Can't wait to visit thessaloniki, looks very nice. Thanks for the pics.

Mostly yes, everyone who wants to be a priest must study there, but also students can learn things about many religions, not only the Christian.

Theological school educates people on theological matters to be teachers at high schools. In greek school we still have religion lessons.

Και τέλος, λύστε μου και μια απορία: ο πύργος του ΟΤΕ με την άθλια διακόσμηση (τόσο άθλια, που κατέληγες να τη συμπαθήσεις κιόλας ως διαχρονικό νοσταλγικό δείγμα του παρελθόντος!), ανακαινίστηκε; άνοιξε για το κοινό; ΓΥΡΙΖΕΙ;

By the way, φόρτωσα στο blog μου μερικές φωτογραφίες που έχω τραβήξει από Θεσσαλονίκη: ---> http://chris-skg.blogspot.com/

Without trying to be offensive, I find that pic of the Thessaloniki skyline messy, third world and brutally ugly. It remeinds me of Mumbai or parts of Hong Kong.

One thing quickly springs to mind ....

The same mistakes made in Athens in relation to inappropriate development appear to have been repeated in Thessaloniki, Patras, Heraklion, Bolos....the list goes on.....

First we destroy everything that we inherited from previous generations for some short term monetary gain, then we complain on why we can't attract tourists.....

As a society, we have yet to learn from our mistakes.

Are there no more visionary leaders left to guide and shape our cities ???

One thing quickly springs to mind ....

The same mistakes made in Athens in relation to inappropriate development appear to have been repeated in Thessaloniki, Patras, Heraklion, Bolos....the list goes on..... This is why the islands are so popular, because generally speaking their architectural heritage has been maintained, even though people go there primarily for the beaches and natural attractions, the island towns and ports have been preserved.

First we destroy everything that we inherited from previous generations for some short term monetary gain, then we complain on why we can't attract tourists..... Well that's debatable considering tourism is up this past two years. Also there are other reasons than just monetary gain for Greece's plethora of ugly polikatikies, it also has to do with socio-political and economic reasons.

As a society, we have yet to learn from our mistakes. I think people are realising the mistakes of the past and hence we have conservation orders on historical towns etc.

Are there no more visionary leaders left to guide and shape our cities ??? I hope so...

Isaac , after the great fire of 1917 a lot of the historic buildings were no longer there . It completely got rid of most of the muslim edifices too .

Read about it here :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Fire_of_Thessaloniki

I have read that most of the minarets collapsed . The Great Church of St. Demetrius
was in ruins . It is obvious from your photos of the back of it( if its the same church ??? :dunno: ) that the Greeks did not do a restoration that is authentic .The design of the church is not the same either to that before the fire . Look at the old authentic bricks and the "new" fill ins ? Not to mention the inside which is bare . A lot of the pre-fire mosiacs can be restored/re-created from old B&W photos . The Russians are doing a similar project to replace and restore the lost Amber Room of Catherine's Palace outside of St.Petersburg . Some Greek Archaeolgists have expressed their disatisfaction at the current situation .I hope something is done It would be excellent for the city's architectural heritage .

Read the tread I started about Thessaloniki and Byzantine Architecture and Calatrava for more on this with pictures and photos included .:)

The good thing to come out of the Great Fire of 1917 was that Prime Minister Venizelos made sure the central Aristotle Plaza was designed to European forms . Thus Thessaloniki lost its former Oriental form and became a modern European city .

I am curious ? What was the function of those Muslim buildings in your photos ? :dunno:

By older buildings I mean the ones built after the fire like those around Aristotle Square and the ones dotted around the city that are all around 4 floors high.

As for the Ottomon buildings, the one with many domes (six, but not all in the photo) was a market hall for luxury goods. The one at the top of the steps was a mosque. The other two were bath houses.
The minaret was attached to the Rotunda, the Roman mausoleum of the Emperor Galerius and later the Church of St George, which again was occupied as a mosque before once again returning as a church.

Thanks to Ernest Hebrard. He was a French architect, archaeologist and urban planner. He is known for his plan to reform the city of Thessaloniki.

As we know, after the Great Fire of 1917, the majority of Thessaloniki centre was largely destroyed. The Greek Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos forbade the reconstruction of the city center until a full modern city plan was approved. This was accomplished by the "Hebrard plan", the plan Hebrard had conceived and developed with the aid of the Greek architects Aristotelis Zachos and Konstantinos Kitsikis.

The plan swept away the Oriental features of Thessaloniki, preserving its heritage, and transformed it into a European style city.

If it wasn't for Hebrard, Thessaloniki would not have had this beautiful square. I always enjoy sitting there and drinking my coffee. It's truly an amazing square.

I found this picture on the net of Aristotle square. It depicts the "Tree of the Stars" which was placed on the square by the ministry of Macedonia and Thrace in honour of the Film festival of Thessaloniki.

a guy I know in Thessaloniki told me that the pederstrian zone starting from the Aristotele square wasn't finished as it was orginially planned. He wasn't sure about this but he told me it was supposed to be longer than it is now. Is this correct at all or have I been misinformed?

Τhe pedestrian zone is ok but I think your friend means the buildings above Egnatia street, which weren't built according to Hebrard drawing. The pedestrian zone starts from St. Demetrius street and stops in the sea.

Another great square like Aristotelous, was proposed in the area of the Ancient Roman Agora. The shot shows the area of the never-built Hebrard buildings and the ancient Roman Agora:
http://img162.imageshack.us/img162/2838/aryfgjghwj8.jpg

The proposed Hembrard buildings were supposed to have a neoclassical style, like those today in Aristotle square. Unfortunately, today in this area we have typical 8-storey buildings.

I haven't seen any movement there, or maybe the Agora is under renovation, who knows...

BTW, Thessaloniki has been upgraded on google earth. They added the Thessaloniki industrial area and some suburbs in the north-west. However the southern suburbs still remain in the low-resolution area.

Is there any chance of seeing some of those modern buildings being "refurbished" to a more classical look? ie adding some decorations to the door/window/balcony frames?

It wouldn't cost much, but it could significantly make the city look better.

Actually some old, neoclassical style buildings changed their old style to a modern one. Well, IMO, they look better now.

Well, I like this idea, there is a chance of renovating these buildings (repaint, etc), but it is more difficult to see them changing their modern look to a classical one. But maybe it can happen, who knows?

Of course the city could look much better (It would be even better if these buildings weren't built), but who cares about that? Ok not all the city is constituted by these types of buildings, we're talking about old, high dense districts.

I also liked the pic with the skate boarder... Very nice, if the lighting conditions were more favourable, as well as with more appropriate shutter speed, this could have easily won o photo competition. Thanks very much, Thessaloniki has a lush beauty, not easily seen in cities of its size... :)

It's Aristotelous street, starting from Egnatia street going to the sea. it's not like Ermou street in Athens, there are few shops there and some cafes, too. However Tsimiski street can be compared with Ermou street, it's the most famous street in Thessaloniki, shops like Marks & Spenser, Zara, etc, can be found there.

So, tell me more about Aristotelous street please. And you do have photos of Tsimiski street?

Well, Aristotelous street ends at Aristotelous square. The big empty one ;). It starts from Egnatia, passes Vas. Irakleiou then Ermou(the Thessaloniki one, not Athens ;) ) and Tsimiski. Then as you walk(since it's for pedestrians only) you get to Mitropoleos. The next street where Aristotelous ends(or starts?) is Nikis avenue.

Aristotelous street got some nice bookstores(Ianos, Malliaris etc.), it's almost next to the Plateia shopping/business center. Well some embassies are located there, like the british one and a step away it's the american one. (Well, maybe just Consulates, not Embassy, correct me.). Also you'll find the Electra Palace hotel(the most shown in this thread :D, i think i've posted a pic of it.) and many cafes around the square till the Nikis avenue.(it's avenue right?). Overall it's nice, being dirty sometimes in specific spots, close to Egnatia street. Most of the year you'll see tourists asking for directions and a crowd close to Tsimiski street on a wild shopping spree.
I don't think there are places you should avoid going, as I said it's a nice place overall, worth visiting just to take a walk and discover the city.

Nice to see this image. I was curious what was going on there.

Does anybody have more info on the end-result?

De rectangular elevated blocks on the left that are placed in a grid seem to be for trees. What is the lower subterranean structure for?

Does this project fit into the new routing of Megas Alexandrou after the sub terranean tunnel at Nikis has been realized?

Cheers

Well these new parks are a kind of suprise! I mean I never saw a plan of them how they should look like after the construction.

About the subsea tunnel, I heard the parks so far are not going to be modified, but they did modify the contruction near the M.Alexandrou Avenue, so that they won't have to rip everything out a few time later.:)

Does anybody know how many these parks are ?

When I think about these nice parks alongside the seafront, I cant help but thinking about the barrier Megas Alexandrou forms for pedestrians that want to visit it from the city running parralel to it.

Are there any plans to lower Megas Alexandrou at some parts to give free access? Would be great IMHO...

Too bad, I don´t think bridges work very well for pedestrians in that way. Bit scary. 3 isn't a lot by the way. Its like 2km, isn't it?

Barcelona did a very good job by lowering a highway 2m so that you can cross and don´t see the cars and you don't hear the NOISE.
You just see a 1m barrier, the height of a balconny which is fine.

If Saloniki doesn't do it now, they'll do it in a few years, I'm sure. As long as the projects they construct now, don't interfere with future planning.

Great news! The facades of the old polikatoikies surrounding the Rotonda will be renovated by the municipality of Thessaloniki! The large number of TV antennas will be replaced by one central antenna. According to the news item the municipality of Thessaloniki plans to expand this program to other parts of the city.

Can someone post a photo of the infamous Mustafa Kemal house? This is an extremely important house because in 1955 a Turkish MIT spy (later arrested) torched it and gave the pretext to the September 1955 pogrom by the Turkish Government –sponsored mob of the Christian Greeks in Istanbul. There are only 500 left there today from the 300,000 of before 1955.It is an extremely important house for many reasons .Of course it is also a shrine for all modern Turkish nationalists and General Buyukanit recently visited it to sign a letter to the founder of the Turkish Republic.

In addition, any other Muslim or Jewish building would be good to see to provide completeness.

Lastly, if someone can post a photo of the interior and exterior of the church called " H Panagia Acheiropiitos". In 1436 (6 years after the Muslims had occupied the city), it was the first Christian church to be taken from the Christians by the Muslims and turned into a mosque. In 1936, it was given back to the Christians. Its a very historic church in Thessalonica. It was built in the early Roman period 450-70 A.D. and it is very illustrative of early basilica architecture -- along with St.Demetrios in Thessalonica.

Sorry if you think this is political. However, I think many readers would be fascinated/curious to see these edifices – for better or worse! :)

Please post these photos if you can.Thank you.
