View Full Version : Boxiest US Skyline
eweezerinc November 11th, 2005, 04:28 AM What US skyline is boxier than boxy?
Which ones are so bland and boring you might as well turn your pencil around, erase the thing, and start over cause your art teacher told you it just wasn't creative enough?

Maybe that's why there aren't many forumers from Denver?
Lmichigan November 11th, 2005, 05:38 AM Denver and Portland immediately come to mine. L.A. not so much. Houston is much more boxy.

Wow. I never noticed how boxy LA can be. For major cities, I go with San Francisco and Boston. I think LA escapes it because it has height.
ptownsnwbrdr November 11th, 2005, 08:17 AM San Fran!
NaptownBoy November 11th, 2005, 01:56 PM after visiting emporis.com, i've decided that both phoenix and houston's skylines are nothing more than glorified bank boxes
Indianapolis has twice as many skyscrapers as phoenix but half the population...I thought our sprawl was bad, but damn.
iamnorthcarolina November 11th, 2005, 10:27 PM Richmond
Tulsa
Phoenix
And basically any skyline that had alot of development 1965-1985

Skyscrapers have absolutely nothing to do with how much a city sprawls.
Lmichigan November 12th, 2005, 04:01 AM I'm glad somebody else caught that.
cfx68 November 12th, 2005, 05:06 AM Richmond comes to mind first...

Except for the pyramid, San Francisco is pretty boxy, but I think that the hills help add dimension (when looking from Marin)
Vidiot November 12th, 2005, 11:26 AM wait a minute.. let's clarify things here.. are we talking about skylines that have boxy individual skyscrapers or skylines as a whole that are arranged in a boxy shape? :dunno: for example..

I think we are talking about the skyline with the highest percentage of box tower in their skyline.
cwilson758 November 12th, 2005, 04:54 PM Denver....definitely. Yes, they have a good number of buildings, but good lord, could they be any more boring?

Well, I wasn't really thinking about skylines as wholes being boxy in shape, no. Just, skylines that are bland-boring to the max with boxes.
I guess Tulsa is a bit on the boring side as far as range in building design goes, but I think its height is great and it still looks really nice. ^_^
Not boring to me. :okay:

LA can't help being boxy, I'm pretty sure that every tall building requires a helipad for evacuation purposes.
waj0527 November 13th, 2005, 03:26 AM Baltimore....although thats beginning to change with some of the newer buildings going up.

yup, its an ordinance or something like that, but all buildings over 10 stories require a helipad

More Richmond boxes...
PotatoGuy November 13th, 2005, 05:10 AM ehh, i hate it when skylines have like the tallest buildings on the edges, like Richmond does in this picture
NovaWolverine November 13th, 2005, 10:46 AM Like Chicago. With that said, I think even with Richmond, Phoenix, Portland, and Denver take it, Norfolk is also boxy too.
But LA I like, b/c of how abruptly the height starts.
samsonyuen November 13th, 2005, 01:56 PM Denver and LA have boxy skylines, but thery're still really attractive (especially LA).
NaptownBoy November 13th, 2005, 09:59 PM It really depends on the meaning of the word boxy, as in the plainest, no character buildings, or as in a skyline that lacks depth and variation with the buildings
When you think about it most skylines have some kind of "boxiness"
TalB November 14th, 2005, 11:16 PM NYC probably will win this.

mongozx November 14th, 2005, 11:42 PM I don't agree with NYC being boxy. Yes, it has many recangular buildings but there are quite a few ones with spires or "tapered tops" plus the variety of heights keep it from being boxy. I think Denver has the boxiest skyline.

eweezerinc November 22nd, 2005, 10:36 PM ^^ Boxy, yet still attractive, at least in those pictures. Always would be great if it had a tallest-signature spire, though.
HoustonTexas November 23rd, 2005, 08:01 AM So what is exactly wrong with "Boxy"?
Every city has "Boxy" Buildings. So A skyline with all spires and poles is the best skyline of them all? Sometimes I wonder about the mental health and judgement placed by some of the forumers.

Oh please.
We've all described a skyline as "too boxy" before. Meaning that all they have are a bunch of cereal boxes and nothing that changes it up. Lots of that ugly 60's crap.
I assure that my mental judgement need not be questioned.
And yes, every city has them, but some have nothing but them, making the skyline boring and void of anything that makes it stand out from other cities.
And no, no one ever said all spires is the best, so lets not make things up.
Did I not just say NO looked attractive in the post above yours? Sometimes there isn't anything wrong with being boxy.
Art Deco November 24th, 2005, 03:56 PM Hold on a second, did anybody even bother to read the very first post of the thread?

Um, why are New York and Chicago being nominated for this? There are plenty of completely sub-par cities in the US to choose from before you go picking two of the three most impressive skylines in the world to fit that above description. :?
I mean, if NYC is the boxiest it's because it has more skyscrapers than every US city combined. :hilarious
The place is basically a museum of historical and architecturally varied buildings from every era since the birth of the skyscraper that can be found in no other city on earth. Heck, most of the taller and more cherished skyscrapers in the city do not even have flat roofs -- Look at the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, American International, 40 Wall Street, Citigroup Center, Woolworth Building... ? First of all, get over yourself, like right now.
They have the most skyscrapers, there-fore have the most boxes, which means there the boxiest.
You lose.
james2390 November 24th, 2005, 07:10 PM The first cities that come to mind for me are Houston, Denver, Portland, Oklahoma City, and San Francisco.

There isn't anything to get over, that post was sarcastic at the very least. The people who did mention New York are two of the better posters on the forum and reason they did so is very apparent and well, funny.
On a serious note, what exactly am I losing and who determines whether boxy is bad? New York has the most boxes, but there are other places who have nothing but them and are therefore boxier in the way the skyline looks. And at least the boxes in New York are actually skyscrapers. The same goes for places like Houston and Los Angeles, they shouldn't really be nominated more than a city like Phoenix or Denver because they are of the top skylines in the country.

Sorry, I'm kind oblivious to sarcasm.
Just kidding then, love you forever...
TalB November 27th, 2005, 09:48 PM Just b/c a skyline is dominated by boxes, doesn't mean that it's bad to look at.
lammius November 28th, 2005, 12:35 AM Sorry, I'm kind oblivious to sarcasm.

Sarcasm aside, I think the idea here is to find the city with the highest proportion of boxes to total skyscrapers. The larger cities mentioned (NYC, Chi, etc.) have the most boxes but they probably also have the most spires, the most x, y, and z. Therefore the sum of the skyline may not be so boxy.
That said, I think Denver is extremely boxy
