On a 4,000 square metre site, Skycity will be a 80 storey tower with 36 levels comprising of commercial office space, a six star all-suite hotel with an average of 220 rooms and a limited number of luxurious residential penthouses units. In addition to this, a podium plaza and cinema complex, podium vehicle parking and an eight level shopping mall is located below ground level.
The uniqueness in its concept is that the functions of the building vary from a hotel to office space, on a very large scale. The observation area, ‘Skyview’ and ‘Skycafe’ is the highest man made occupyable space in Manila, which will provide visitors a unique opportunity to overview Manila, the capital city.
The plaza is the main access point to the commercial office, and serves as a principle connector to the plaza’s facilities which includes a cinema complex, bowling alley and commercial outlets.
As a result, the design scheme perfected the client’s concept into a workable architectural solution while providing the tower with a distinct skyline character.

Eric Offereins November 11th, 2005, 02:16 PM Messturm, Frankfurt? However, this one still looks fine to me.
TampaMike November 11th, 2005, 03:27 PM I hope that is not going to be the color,it looks like a old chemical or factory plant chimney.
Phobos November 11th, 2005, 08:58 PM ^I thought the same when I looked at it :)
bulakenyo November 11th, 2005, 11:50 PM Will this project finally push through?
Oh I'm in tears!
Menandro November 11th, 2005, 11:52 PM Fantastic Project!!

Salut!
kazpmk November 11th, 2005, 11:53 PM great news, I hope it get =s built. Still 300 m??

the current tallest, PBCom, is at 250-ish meters (if im not mistaken).
_zner_ November 12th, 2005, 04:02 AM PBcom is 259m..
i hope skycity would have another style of renderings... because it looks so cheap(i mean the quality of the picture)!

nice to see the project has actually started
Pengui November 12th, 2005, 04:05 PM If I understand correctly, it was started long time ago, and got stalled (probably because of the Asian financial crisis ?)
aranetacoliseum November 12th, 2005, 06:12 PM the project was on-hold bec. of the legal dispute between the developers and the east greenhills association, (a nearby group of wealthy residents).
the opponents trying to keep skycity away because they are worried that the building will cast a shadow on their homes and affect their water supply.....

aranetacoliseum November 12th, 2005, 06:18 PM the exciting about this megastructure is, this skyscrapers features an observation area known as "skyview" & "skycafe", (the highest occupyable space in the capital)
which will provide the visitors a unique opportunity to overview the whole metropolitan manila....
another tourist attraction for manila!
great!

The middle and upper part of the tower is almost a shameless rip-off from the Commerzbank, Frankfurt.
Wssps November 12th, 2005, 09:37 PM hmmmz, it looks like a mix between the Commerzbank, and a tower in China
World Trade Center, Chongqing:
http://skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=179775
but it isn't an ugly building, :)
IsaganiZenze November 12th, 2005, 10:36 PM ...but remember this project began in 1996 (proposals and so on), excavation: 5-6 years ago, and then it was put on hold....so it has been around for a long time, it just didn't materialize....but i guess they should update and tweek portions of it....but I love this building, i hope it materializes...i don't care if people claim it to be a "shameless rip off" of some other building...i hope it gets built :)
Forza Raalte November 13th, 2005, 12:22 AM The tower is nice but it is just a rip-off of the Commerbank. The only thing different is that it is round has a different lower part (I think a mall) and the top is a bit different. If this tower would be build in my city, I would shame myself for the rest of the world.
philbern November 13th, 2005, 12:52 AM If this tower would be build in my city, I would shame myself for the rest of the world.

is this the building you are refering to?

compared to: skycity
http://edmundtanso.smugmug.com/photos/13413647-L.jpg
...if so...it is similar, I'll give you that. But I don't think SkyCity is a "rip-off" of Commerbank, if you look closely, its quite different. From what I am assuming that you call "rip-off" which is the part that have gaps, is circular in sky city. As well the upper portion of the building is totally different. As you mentioned, the base is different. As well, it's much taller. So I won't be ashamed if this scraper is constructed in Metro Manila. It will just add to the extensive skyline that we have already.
Forza Raalte November 13th, 2005, 01:52 AM I don't say the tower aint nice but there will allways be peoplewho will say when this tower is completed. It looks like the Commerzbank, can't those Phillipino's design a skyscraper themself.
I don't belong to those people cause there are really nice skyscrapers in the Phillipines, I like the one in Makati a lot.
IsaganiZenze November 13th, 2005, 02:06 AM that's true though..most of the buildings that are developed in the world are mosty some sort of tweeked design from other buildings, which we cannot avoid. But it's not just in the Philippines. anywho, that's all i guess. :) cheers
Jo November 13th, 2005, 09:02 AM Amazing stuff there Manila, especially if it turns out to be as dark as in the rendering.
I can think of very few towers in this world that is not resembling another one in general shape. Once in a while we get something new like BOC, Turning Torso, the controversial Elephant Tower and Taipei101. But that's not the norm, even for really tall towers.
Indica November 14th, 2005, 01:22 AM 8 level shopping mall underground?! Wow!!
the excavation site looks pretty deep too, maybe even deeper than 8 floors?

Well, thats one of the consequences of globalization...international designs that are similar. Its not a total rip-off of CommerzBank, since EGI is circular while CommerzBank is three sided, but yes there are many distinct similarities.
Anyways, its an awesome project...hope to see the start construction soon. Great for the Metro Manila skyline:okay:

I think they are in a wait and see situation. they are waiting for the first tallest to be constructed then they will construct taller than what is currently being constructed just like what happend to the tall building along Ayala Avenue.

ramvingar November 20th, 2005, 02:29 PM Oh! that's interesting, people who live in those slums can afford to buy things in shopping malls. Are you kidding me? :)
you'd be surprised! :) There are malls in Manila that cater to the lower income groups too. But honestly, I do think that they are better off saving their money for things they need more like education but then I think again that it is their simple joy to be able to go to the mall and shop. Who am I to stop them?
Manila-X November 20th, 2005, 02:35 PM Most malls that cater to lower imcome groups in The Philippines mostly sell cell phones or anything related to that. Though they'll have some stores and of course the fast food chains.
ramvingar November 20th, 2005, 02:41 PM Nice tower for MAnila ...but how can you afford such buildings? Your economy is not that dynamic or large.

It is true that the Philippines is considered a developing economy. And that is exactly what has been happening since the early 90's - it is developing. It is wrong to think that just because a country is classified as "third world" or developing that the whole country is nothing but jungle and slums. I hope that the pics in this thread change whatever opinion you have about the Philippines as well as other developing countries.
qt_bi November 20th, 2005, 02:41 PM Oh! that's interesting, people who live in those slums can afford to buy things in shopping malls. Are you kidding me? :)
geez what that has to do with shopping, even poor Brazilian people visits Sao Paulo's malls. Why? Arent your poor people visit Bangkok malls? Anyway Bangkok is a bargain's paradise, so i presume u love night shopping on those flea markets?
Manila-X November 20th, 2005, 03:13 PM It is true that the Philippines is considered a developing economy. And that is exactly what has been happening since the early 90's - it is developing. Like Cokelitro said, the term third world doesn't apply anymore. It's either upper, middle or lower income. The Philippines is indeed a middle income country.

yup! that's why i put the word third world in quotation marks. :)
c0kelitr0 November 21st, 2005, 04:26 PM Oh! that's interesting, people who live in those slums can afford to buy things in shopping malls. Are you kidding me? :)
mosaic, the truth is yes. majority of the people who live in slums are actually quite affluent and cash-rich. unbelievable but yes they have a great buying power. if you visit manila's slums, a typical house has the following:
huge flat-panel tvs
complete home appliances (8-burner stoves, washing machines with dryers, etc.)
huge refrigerators
air conditioners
and more...
but they do prefer to live in slums...
normandb November 22nd, 2005, 01:06 AM but they do prefer to live in slums...
because they find it more cheaper plus if the slums got demolished they will have instant money or instant housing from the government.

SOM regurgitating their old designs again. Wasnt there a tower a lot like this designed for Guangzhou a few years back? With the spiky crown and everything. Maybe it was for a different city, I dont remember what is was called.

wafu21m February 5th, 2007, 05:33 AM You heard the news in bandila last week? there was this filipino architect who will design the highest building in the Philippines but I dunno if he's referring to skycity or lopez center, but either way, one of these two buildings will surely be on the grounds!

Skycity is a 77 storey skyscraper whose construction is pending in Mandaluyong, Philippines. It is expected to be completed in 2012 and be 335 metres tall.
Skycity is planned as a mixed used skyscraper with a hotel, officespace and residential space.

wafu21m February 6th, 2007, 06:13 AM i tried looking it at youtube but I cant find one.
diz February 6th, 2007, 06:24 AM Well wafu, you saw it too! Describe it or did they actually show SkyCity?
great184 February 6th, 2007, 08:25 AM Skycity still butt ugly, rather have something else as our tallest
great184 February 6th, 2007, 08:27 AM Actually it just needs a little design revisions. It would look a lot more better if its podium was not so large or tall , or as a compromise the central tower should seemingly start at the ground floor, that would be a great design then
wafu21m February 6th, 2007, 09:34 AM Well wafu, you saw it too! Describe it or did they actually show SkyCity?
actually, they didn't show the skycity, the news was focused more on the architect. it was stated that he was the one who designed the building that will be the tallest in the philippines. He also designed some buildings in some arab countries. btw, he's a filipino
FrancisXavier February 6th, 2007, 09:42 AM Don't you have basic cable/TFC? :D
Well, I didn't get to watch it. The part I saw was that he was famous outside the Philippines. And the tower they showed on the news didn't look like SkyCity.
:D basically i dont need a TFC or even cable to watch it.. anywhere in the country it's available...ABS-CBN is a free channel..
BTW, i wasnt able to watch it coz 10:30 or 11:00 pm is my SSC time.. :D
FrancisXavier February 6th, 2007, 09:44 AM actually, they didn't show the skycity, the news was focused more on the architect. it was stated that he was the one who designed the building that will be the tallest in the philippines. perhaps, he's the one living in KL right now.. He was also featured on PINOY ABROAD, with his design of Centennial Tower..
great184 February 7th, 2007, 08:06 AM ^^^ The one envision to stand right near the new muntinlupa city hall, soaring to 400+ meters in height? And cladded in gold tinted windows?
OtAkAw February 7th, 2007, 09:26 AM ^^I also heard about Lopez Centre in the news. Karen Davila said that "...also designed the Lopez Centre, the planned tallest building in the country also located in Rockwell Center" or something like that. So the country's proposed supertall isn't "dead" yet.

400+? Really?
SNT1 February 8th, 2007, 10:48 AM well, a 400-m scraper will definitely put our mark in the skyline battle in S.E.A., but I'm not gonna hold my breath. Probably 300-m, thats IF it gets built.

That's it. That is what the fuss is all about. The news feature on Bandila was about Mr Palafox and his works, which include the still unbuilt Lopez Center.

FrancisXavier June 7th, 2007, 04:57 AM the article said it'll only have 62 storeys. I dont think that'd be 400meters.

alheaine November 26th, 2010, 11:28 AM SC decision on 77-storey Skycity condo project affirmed with finality
April 24, 2010, 3:29pm
The Second Division of the Supreme Court ruled with finality on the right of the Skycity to be developed within a C-2 Zone in a parcel of land along the corner of EDSA and Ortigas Avenue, Mandaluyong City.
The lot used to be the site of the Tropical Hut Hamburger and Restaurant and Supermarket, a bank, parking spaces, through-street from Florida Street to Ortigas Avenue and a telecom tower.
In a Resolution dated March 10, 2010, the Supreme Court upheld its decision dated January 22, 2010 that the proposed Skycity project can be legally constructed by its owners in the lot which belongs to a C-2 Zone, different and distinct from the residential zone where the oppositors, the Greenhills East Association (GEA), is physically located. By resolving to deny the Motion for Reconsideration of GEA with finality, the Supreme Court noted that “the basic issues raised therein hav [-ing] been duly considered and passed upon by the Court in the aforesaid decision and no substantial argument hav [-ing] been adduced to warrant the reconsideration sought.”
"Since the decision was promulgated on January 22, GEA made several motions and manifestations which the Supreme Court duly noted. It nevertheless resolved with objectivity and impartiality the issues involved and finally put a stop to endless babble on the case. Thus, the proposed 77-storey condominium building with 8 basements is now cleared to proceed with its construction 14 years after its planning and design," Bienvenido G. de Castro, EGI Vice President-External Affairs said.
"The proponent, E Ganzon, Inc. hopes that its oppositors would now cooperate to realize the project which had unduly been delayed to the prejudice of its developer, the livelihood of those it stands to benefit during the interim, and the Filipino people in general who had been deprived of doing business in an environmentally friendly building because of their opposition," De Castro added.
De Castro said the project would still have to secure other permits, clearances and licenses as any other development project normally goes through under the current practice. But, with the patriotic help of its neighbors and government agencies, the project is supposed to clear the various regulatory requirements without a hitch. It is clearly the right of the owner of the lot to use its land pursuant to its ownership and the laws regulating its exercise, as the Supreme Court declared.
The Skycity would have several fire refuge zones, treat its sewer water prior to discharge, provide sufficient parking in the building and manage traffic within the building as well as cooperate with the local government in traffic management outside the building. It will have a program for the conservation of the environment during the lifetime of the building and implement solid waste management pursuant to law.
^^
my hopes are high for this project..any updates then?:)
