Offshore reef set to make Dubai surf capital of Gulf

Surfing the Arabian Gulf: The artificial reef will increase the height of Dubai’s breaking waves to up to 1.5 m.

Dubai is set to become a surfer’s paradise with plans in place to build an offshore reef that will produce major breaking waves.

Construction Week has learned that contractors have already submitted bids to Dubai Municipality for the innovative project that is also being designed to encourage the growth of marine life off the Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim coastline.

The firms hoping to land the project are Waagner Biro Gulf and Overseas AST.

The massive reef will be constructed using more than 130 ‘geosynthetic’ containers and tubes that are filled with sand or stone and sunk to form a horseshoe shape on the seabed.

It will sit just below the low tide level and is designed to channel the flow of water and magnify the height of waves hitting the coast to up to 1.5 m.

“It is also very important that there aren’t any gaps or voids so that if surfers wipe out, they cannot be caught in a void,”
said Angus Jackson, principal coastal engineer at International Coastal Management, the project consultant.

The company built the first sand filled structure on Australia’s Gold Coast in 1985, which extended for 100 m and produced waves of up to 6 m in height.

The 73 000 m3 structure planned for Dubai is likely to
extend across 200 m and will be made up of containers that will be 25 m long and 3 m wide.

Trials undertaken so far have shown that the containers increase the number and diversity of marine fauna.

“It is really a multi-functional offshore reef that promotes marine life like algae and sea-grass. We have been conducting trials in the Arabian Gulf to see what grows on them,” added Jackson.

The plan is set to be unveiled later this month when the world’s leading marine engineers descend on Dubai for the Arabiancoast Conference.

This type of unit is increasingly being used as a replacement for rock and concrete because of the rising cost of these more traditional materials.

According to Jackson, it is becoming difficult in many parts of the world to obtain rock of adequate size and durability for coastal works.

A significant number of structures in the Australasian region have been constructed using sand-filled geosynthetic containers over the last 20 years.

Where is this being built though. Isn't it dangerous to have higher waves?

if this is going to work properly it should actually help environment,
it will bring back the waves gone because of palm jum and water flow will also increase!

1 minor problem.

in order to amplify waves, you need to have some in the first place.

dubai doesnt have any......

could be a problem!

Dubai to build artificial reef
Posted: Monday, December 12, 2005

Dubai

Dubai is building a massive artificial offshore reef in the Arabian Gulf. The reef, in addition to promoting surfing will also protect the coastline and improve its marine life, a report said.

The reef, called Narrow-Neck, will span 73,000 sq m and will be 200 metres long. The location is approximately 400 metres off the coast - between Umm Suqeim and Burj Al Arab, said the Gulf News report.

The construction, expected to cost Dh9 million ($2.5 million), will start in January and is likely to be completed in nine months.

"The artificial reef is a new technology we have opted to protect our coastline as it is much cheaper than the traditional breakwater protection," said Khalid Al Zahed, head of Coastal Management Section at the Dubai Municipality, designers of the project.

He said the reef, designed to channel the flow of water and increase the height of waves hitting the coast, will sit just below the low tide level. Intensity of the tide will reduce after hitting the reef but at the same time, it will magnify waves to help surfing.

"Dubai will be a surfers' paradise after the reef is constructed as it will set off major breaking waves," he said. Al Zahed said that the municipality will register it as a patent product because the civic body is receiving inquiries from other Gulf countries as well as US and South Africa.

The reef will be constructed of geo-synthetic containers filled with sand or stones and sunk to form a horseshoe shape on the seabed. It will be sunk in shallow water with three to seven metres of depth. It is expected that 40,000 cu m of sand will be used.

could be the solution for palm jum problem.

lol the last one is riddiculous but don't be so negative nick there are waves on the beaches and there will be once palm jum is not connected to the mainland any longer. ;)

The Gold coast narrowneck seems to have been quite successful in terms of increasing the wave height, I am confident we will be able to have some decent waves in Dubai

Muscat (oman's capital) can be a perfect place for surfers' Paradise like the one in GoldCoast (Australia) that Muscat lie on a larger area of Sea and in mansons seasons it has huge waves great for surfing.
Really! what about Fujairah?

DUBAI

ok, this makes more sence now.

the area its near is acing very heavy erosion from Palm Jumerah... this should replenish it.

diving e.t.c....

but they will have to banish the kite boarders if they want surfers to be able to use it without being killed by the maniacs who have no idea what they are doing, and dont care as long as they look cool.

one of dubai's problems right now is beach erosion. can anyone with an engineering bg tell us how this project might overcome that?

AltinD
November 3rd, 2008, 10:23 AM
The biggest problem is that since they announced this project, plans for the area have changed with more reclaimed island planned, so we can very well say this is an abandon ... or as we like to call them here: "Never Build"
