Take it easy will ya guys ;) This is a 3rd world city with just 240.000 people. Its the 90th largest city in Brasil, and was settled by germans back in 1824.
The city is located in the southernmost state of Brasil, 45 km north of Porto Alegre, 1000km south of São Paulo, 1600km south of Rio de Janeiro and about 1000km northeast of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

It's a beautiful and colorful city. looking at these pictures, it's hard to believe Brazil is a 3rd world country. It's one of the more developed developing countries. I think Brazil needs to solve it's social disparities, then it will be on it's way to being a major power.

Why was it settled by Germans?
That's neat. Germans in a Portuguese Colony.

Brazil is the richest 3rd world country.

This is the 95th largest city in Brasil in population, with 250k people. Its located in the metro area of Porto Alegre, although its not a considered a suburb.

Has the city´s name something to do with Hamburg, Germany?;)
Anyway it has a larger skyline than "the real" Hamburg despite it is much smaller.

absolutely. The history is as follows:

in 1824, the german immigration to Brasil started. Most of the german immigrants received free lands in the area known at the time as Feitoria do Linho-Cânhamo. One of these immigrants, was a man from Hamburg, Germany, and he stablished a trade outpost in a hill. He used to say to his clients "Always come back to the house of the old hamburguer!".

Soon, the hill became known as Hamburguer Berg (Hill of the Hamburguer).

Around 1880, the british were building a railroad, and a trainstation was built some 2km down from the hill where now there was a small town. A new development area soon appeared around the train station, and that area became called by the british as New Hamburg, as opposed to the "old" part of the town, Hamburguer Berg. When the city emancipated from the other german settled city of São Leopoldo, it got the name Novo Hamburgo.

One interesting fact, is that the most correct name should be Nova Hamburgo, instead of Novo Hamburgo, since the word "Novo" (new) reffers to "city" (new city of hamburg), and city in portuguese is a "female" noum.

the richest 3d world country?????????
in what??????? in JUNGLE ???? MAYBE !!!!!!
looks like you never went to school !!

The richest 3d wrld country is China.
So soon is going to be the second richest (and ARMY POWER) country in the world...i think in 10 or 20 years maybe sooner ....fOR NOW IS the 5°

For now, Mexico is the 2cond richest in the third world ...(in gdp)...but looks
like brazil is doing more well than mexico and in 3 or 4 years everithing can change....

China is not the richest third world country, neither Brazil or Mexico are. it´s like saying that a guy who has 10 kids and a salary of U$10.000 is wealthier then a guy who has 1 kid and a salary of U$5.000. depends of how you see
