Well there's no official thread for this big development so thought I better start one.

Currently lots of cranes on the site as these snaps I took yesterday show, they've finished moving the river around and are now doing the foundations.

Anyone got any renders of the building? I saw some a while back, it's really pretty but I can't find any on the net.

Anyway, this is what it looks like as of yesterday:

Excellent I have been waiting for the first pictures of this baby.

Just some facts I have from newspaper clipping

It will cost 118 million dollars
500, 000 tons of sand will be moved for its construction
When it opens the, four level centre will seat up to 6000 people while the convention floor space will accommodate up to 3000 people at a time.
Construction is scheduled to take 758 days.
It should open around October 2004.

A massive pedestrian boardwalk will be built to allow convention centre visitors to walk from the Cascade Gardens past the western precinct of the convention centre, ultimately linking with either the Broadbeach CBD or Pacific Fair.
The walkway is to be known as the Broadway.

heres a pic from this weeks GC Bulliten.
the article says that the 130mil is on time to open mid next year.
Approx 900 piles were dug for the massive structure which now has 8 cranes dominating the Broadbeach skyline.
The new TE Peters bridge adjacent to site will open to trafic in August.

Does GC have any major professional sports teams ?

I really regret not getting over there when I was in Brisbane.

no not for a while. The nations biggest sporting codes are rugby league, rugby union and afl none of which the GC have. they used to have a league team which stopped. though there has been talk for quite some time for a new league team, and possibly even a AFL team. it wont be for some time though.

Yeah, seems as though the population (ever-growing as it is) is still too small to sustain a team in any of the major national competitions. But then again, why would you want to be going to footy games when you could be fishing, boating, swimming, surfing, bushwalking..........or just lying on the beach checking out the gorgeous chicks:cool:

yeahi was going to say that as well. the Gold Coast is the face of Surfing in Australia. theres not to many junior sporting clubs on the Gold Coast to start with, a lot of juniors join surf clubs and stuff like that. when i say a lot im not entirely sure how many.

Damn! There was some pretty hard-core earthmoving there! Creating a site where there was none!

I wonder why they didn't just build the centre on that grassy field with the big car park, instead of completely re-configuring the waterway? And also, it's unusual that Jupiters has altered the waterways adjacent to their site, where the monorail loops around...wonder what's up with that? They should have re-constructed the monorail a little bit so that it swings past the convention centre with a stop there!

I get the feeling that given a choice between modifying the monorail and tearing it up altogether, they'd choose the later, still, it's a good idea. I wish the thing ran to Pacific Fair as well.

I have to admit I only noticed the modification of the canal when driving past last Saturday.
I was stunned.
IMHO it was better the way it was. Perhaps Jupiters have plans for that bit of grass?

Well apparently there are plans to do this, and swing it by the convention centre as well potentially.

Centre on track
13Dec03

IT is full steam ahead at the Gold Coast Convention Centre.

Now in the final countdown to its grand opening, the $118 million centre is looking more and more like the venue that will house up to 6000 spectators for concerts and conventions.

Sections of the roof have been put on and the ceiling acoustic panels are in place.

The roof is expected to be finished by January with completion in May-June ahead of a July grand opening.

Jupiters Limited general manager of development Peter Trathen last night said it was 'all systems go'.

"Everything is about on track," he said.

"It's all going quite well."

The convention centre has received further good news, courtesy of Premier Peter Beattie, who yesterday unveiled his Gold Coast Christmas stocking, bursting with $95 million worth of projects, as the election campaign hits top gear.

Speaking at Elanora State School, Mr Beattie announced several major projects for the Coast, including a major expansion of the convention centre, massive upgrade of Nerang-Broadbeach Road and emergency and intensive care wing for Robina's Gold Coast Hospital campus.

Following his announcement of a $247 million commitment to the Gold Coast's train network last month, yesterday's announcement is the clearest sign yet that Mr Beattie is not taking anything for granted on the Coast, where Labor holds seven of the nine seats.

The convention centre, which is looking more impressive by the day, has always had the option of expansion. Mr Beattie yesterday vowed to spend more money as part of the government's Smart State building fund to lay the foundations for an additional 3000 square metres of exhibition space, doubling what was initially planned.

Mr Beattie said starting the expansion now would provide huge savings on the cost of doing the work once the centre was already finished later down the track.

holy shit!

so let me get this right, there are plans to double the size of the convention centre when its not even finished yet? is that right or have i just misread?

yeah i too actualy heard plans to run the monorail to the convention centre. That monorail system was actually the beginning of what was to be a monorail system stretching the whole of surfers and broadbeach. Funding was the reason it fell through

CaptainJackSparrow
December 13th, 2003, 04:41 AM
Yes, they want to make the centre bigger already due to BIG demand, there was even talk of building a second convention centre, but I guess they'll build this one up instead, which is probably better to keep things in one spot.

The monorail is owned by Thackral, I heard once Air on Broadbeach is finished and the convention centre completed they might change it around, it's a private monorail though, it's worth pointing out, but yeah, they always wanted to run it to Pacific Fair. I haven't heard anything of late about the expansion but as the Convention Centre is finished, Air or Broadbeach goes up and so on we should hear more.

as TOCC mentioned

sad news from GGB-

Rigger plunges to his death on convention centre site
11Feb04

TREVOR Kelly's death typified everything he fought for.

The 46-year-old rigger, and active supporter of workplace health and safety, was tragically killed while working on the Gold Coast convention centre building site yesterday.

It is believed the Marsden man tumbled 15 metres to his death while repairing water damaged roof panels on the multimillion-dollar site at Broadbeach.

Police say he stepped through a soft, acoustic layer of the partially completed roof.

The fatality, the third on local sites in five months, left workmates devastated and dumbfounded.

"It's an absolute tragedy," said labourer Michael Clegg. "That's the risk those (riggers) take up there though. It's pretty scary."

Workmate Ray Frangieh said that from the height Mr Kelly fell, he stood little chance of surviving.

He was adamant safety procedures were followed and no shortcuts had been made taken at any stage of construction.

"There was no shortcuts happening. We'd had a safety induction this morning. They have been really good with safety here."

Its a shame about the surrounding landscaping. Apparently the builders ran out of money so we ended up with a cheaper alternative to what was originally planned, including water cascading down at the highway frontage, and bigger, grander trees and plants etc. The council is making sure they upgrade the landscaping to what was originally proposed once the operators have made the revenue from the centre, and thats when they will begin to build the extension. The GCCEC may almost be officially completed, but theres still a bit of work to be done.

Was your missus chauffering you around while you were taking snaps? Well, they do have some purpose (I guess you told her to "get back in that kitchen" upon arrival at home). ;)

Now, is this building at all captivating? I mean, if I were to show someone around the Gold Coast would they ask "Whoah, what's that?".....or does it have the presence of a shopping mall?

Too me it looks like a slightly smaller version of it's cousins at Southbank and Darling Harbour.
It's obvious what it is, and it looks very smart but if you want to go Whoah! you probably have to see it from the air.

Four years after completion, the convention centre is now going through an extension.
Completion: probably end of the year or early next year.
