Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnamese: Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh pronunciation is the largest city in Vietnam and is located near the Mekong Delta. Under the name, Prey Nokor, it was the main port of Cambodia, before being annexed by the Vietnamese in the 17th century. Under the name Saigon (Vietnamese: Sài Gòn; pronunciation), it was the capital of the French colony of Cochinchina, and later of the independent state of South Vietnam from 1954 to 1975. In 1975, Saigon was merged with the surrounding province of Gia Định and renamed Hồ Chí Minh City (although the name Saigon is still frequently used, particularly by its citizens).

The city center is situated on the banks of the Saigon River, 60 kilometers (37 mi) from the South China Sea and 1,760 kilometers (1,094 mi) south of Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam.

The metropolitan area, which consists of Hồ Chí Minh City metro area, Thủ Dầu Một and surrounding towns, has more than 9 million people,[citation needed] making it the largest metropolitan area in Vietnam and Indochina.

Saigon is not the old name for the city, it's the 'correct' name for the city. I think only Vietnamese Communists refer to the city as Ho Chi Minh City. My girlfriend calls it Saigon, and she was born there; she says most Vietnamese living abroad call it Saigon as well.

Skyline isn't great, so I'll give it a four. That second picture makes the city as a whole look pretty nice, though. I hope to visit within the next 2 to 3 years.

Never seen pics from the city, and it looks way better then expected. 6/10 :)

I am Vietnamese and I can tell you that Saigon is the correct name for the city. My mom wasn't very pleased once when I called it Ho Chi Minh. Ho Chi Minh is the communist name for it.

If only North Vietnam hadn't taken over the South. Saigon could have been one of the great Asian cities. But alas... 3/10.

There are more and more skyscrapers developments in the southern part of Saigon. I will post more pics later

Dont mind the slums in for ground. They add a flavour that makes the city what it is. But as far a sky lines goes. C-. = 4.
Sorry not evey an impression or major land mark there to of set the river or land scape.

Those second and third pics look great and give a good view of the skyline. Has some very nice buildings and some good height too. For a city of this size and developing well, it will add some more density in the near future to get better points I am sure.

You can still see some of the French influence in some of the pics, and some of them have a very familiar '60's and '70's (wartime photos) look to them. Better than I expected...several modern buildings. 5.5

While I don't think they're strange per se. I would guess offhand that old French colonial trends in architecture helped give Ho Chi Minh City some of it's look, though not to the extent of what was prevalent in Hanoi? I would like to see other cities like Hue for comparison, would be interesting...:banana:

The skyline could be better for a city of 5 million population. But Saigon is really nice and beautiful. It looks promising indeed. I believe that in the next 10 years the city will look different.

A lot of beautiful cathedrals/churches can be seen in Saigon. This is rare in Southeast Asian cities (except Filipino cities).:)

Personally, I prefer lower rises. It gives more sunlight to the area. However, the minus side are cables and electric poles. They are everywhere. :(
