VansTripp November 14th, 2005, 06:12 AM I thought auto insurance cost in Canada is pretty redicious.
Huhu November 14th, 2005, 08:35 AM I thought auto insurance cost in Canada is pretty redicious.
I don't know about other provinces but my family pays about $1700 CAD (1450 USD?) per year on a new sedan, I don't know how that compares with the US or if it's "ridiculous" or not. If you are young and drive a sports car, then your premiums will go up however.
Since we only have one auto insurance company claims can be pretty straight forward although our system has its own problems.
Rhino November 14th, 2005, 09:01 PM I pay 1200 a year for insurance for my dodge neon , and my Father pays 1400 a year for a 2006 Grand Vitara .
crazyjoeda November 14th, 2005, 10:59 PM Auto Insurance I think a Mustang would be about $1500-$2000CND a year. If you have the safe drivers discount which most people get.
Sales Tax In British Columbia there is a 7% provincial sales tax(PST) plus a 7% federal sales tax(GST). Products such as food are exempt from PST.
Income Tax It depends on what you make. If you are a low income earner you wont pay much and you will get a large refund. If you make alot of money you will pay more, its hard to say how much it depends on your situation.
Cost of Living Vancouver is Canada's most expensive city in terms of real estate prices, that said it is cheaper than most parts of LA. You can rent a decent one bedroom apartment starting from $600-$800 per month. Clothes cost about the same as in the USA, the only difference is higher sales tax.
Grocery Costs Most items are cheaper in Canada than in the USA, I don't think you will notice much of a difference. Alcohloic beverages are a bit more expencive, and in BC you can only them at a liquor store(legal age is 19).
Gay Freindly Vancouver is very liberal and tolerant city. The most gay freindly area is the west end around denman and davie. It is also one of the most multicultural cities on earth.
Is Life Easier Here? Thats subjective but I love it here. This is a very laid back city, but life is what you make it. I think its easier in Canada because there are more social safty nets, You don't have to worry about things like not having health insurance. Studys have shown that Canadians are happier than Americans.
Hope That Helps.

Wow. That's intresting.
Does sale tax in Canada is VAT? It means product got taxed before shipping to store like in UK. (It can be sounds like higher price than USA)
How much money is minimum per hrs at job? like McDonald's.
New video game for PS2 in Canada is around $59.99 and $49.99 in USA, why does it seems difference with prices are higher for video game on PS2 in Canada than USA do?
Is any uniform policies at public school in Vancouver? I hate uniform policies alot.

1. The sales tax in Canada is a consumption tax, you are taxed upfront when you buy the product from the store. I don't know if there is something like the 'VAT' in Canada.
2. Minimum wage in BC is $8.00/hour (6.70 USD), but I believe there is an optional training wage of $6.00/hour for the employer if it is your first time at this kind of job (I forget exactly how long it lasts).
3. The current exchange rate means $60.00CAD = $50.00 USD(approximately). The only difference is the sales tax.
4. There are no uniform policies in the public system, only private.
VansTripp November 15th, 2005, 01:55 AM How about East Vancouver? It seems dangerous?
What area of Vancouver that have poor neighborhood and gross buildings? East Vancouver seems already to list.
East Vancouver is majority white population?
Plumber73 November 15th, 2005, 03:00 AM "How about East Vancouver? It seems dangerous?" <<< I'd say most of East Van is fine. I believe the scumiest part of East Van. is from Main St. to Clark Dr. (West to East) and from Powell St. to Broadway (North to South) - I'd choose not to live in there. The rest of East Van is really not that bad.
It's probably the contrast with the Westside that will make it look a bit rough. If I were to live in East Van, I'd live around Commercial Dr. or near Main St. between Broadway and about 33rd. Those are some cool streets, and I think Main St. is getting some kind of a makeover. Should look even better by next year.
"What area of Vancouver that have poor neighborhood and gross buildings? East Vancouver seems already to list." <<< Downtown Eastside I suppose. It's without a doubt the poorest neighborhood you'll find here.
"East Vancouver is majority white population?" <<< Apparently Van City is half Asian, so I'd say not. Burnaby, which is just east of Vancouver City, is also half Asian I believe, or somewhere in that range.
crazyjoeda November 15th, 2005, 08:47 AM How about East Vancouver? It seems dangerous?
Its mostly harmless bums most crime is property crime. And its not so much East Vancouver as it is the downtown eastside which is near the port.
What area of Vancouver that have poor neighborhood and gross buildings? East Vancouver seems already to list.
North Surrey and Whalley are fairly poor, but not really that bad. Again mostly property crime. Other than the downtown eastside there is no other getto area. Violent crime is pretty rare but like in any major city it does happen.
East Vancouver is majority white population?
Like most of Vancouver its pretty good mix of ethnicities. There is higher rate of Native people on the downtown eastside though and also street people from eastern Canada who come here for the milder weather.
East Vancouver is acctually half the city. Its divided at Cambie street; east of cambie all the streets are call east streetname, for example East Broadway and West Broadway.
Most of East Vancouver is pretty average, its not really a poor area since most houses go for $400,000. Like plumer said its more of the contrast between the West Side which is full of beautiful million dollar homes.
Is any uniform policies at public school in Vancouver? I hate uniform policies alot.
Acctually police due patrol public schools. I don't think they stay there all day, but when I was at public school a cop came in almost every day.
worldwide November 15th, 2005, 09:25 AM woops, i just read your sig. arent you the same deaf mustang driving kid that was at one point blink182 or something. you like good charlotte?
ssiguy2 November 15th, 2005, 06:40 PM Remember that there is one massive difference between any Canadian city vs American city...................health care and presription costs.
The difference is so huge that much of the reason auto plants continue to be built in Ontario is because across the river in Detroit the healthcare costs for their employees actually costs more than the steel to make the cars.

I live on the eastside, near a Skytrain station to boot, and it's by no means dangerous. Property crime may be slightly higher than in the west but it's that bad all over the city anyways. Housing costs are above $500k on average in my neighbourhood already, and other areas are even higher.

You'll want to avoid Broadway and Commercial since it's a congregation area for not-so-nice elements of society. It's not dangerous though, and mostly limited to the south side of the intersection. Commercial drive north of Broadway is nice culturally speaking, but doesn't feel as secure to me (just IMO). On Main St. you'll want to stay south of 12th Ave.

On Main St. you'll want to stay south of 12th Ave.Sounds reasonable. Broadway and Main might be a tad too dodgy. So, from 12th south is fine, but it's nice to be within walking distance of Broadway if you use transit a lot.
VansTripp November 16th, 2005, 04:05 AM I bet that East Vancouver isn't much dirt, junk and rundown as what liked in 80's and 90's.
Plumber73 November 16th, 2005, 06:48 AM ^^ The people may have changed over the last 20 years, but most of the buildings are pretty much the same.
VansTripp November 16th, 2005, 11:59 PM Where is deaf center in Vancouver?
Does you see any deaf people in Vancouver?
Does in Vancouver has Rehabilitation to help the job?
How much is cost on car tax per year? (It was on car tags)
