colinsunil July 18th, 2011, 11:48 AM :)Good to have a marine drive strech for kollam...but still if you look more closely to this strech, it could have done in a better way..again a visionless bureacrats i belive or perposeful ignorance..
It wold have looked better if:
they paved pathways stretch same as that of marine drive..so people can do their walks enjoying the beauty of nature..
plant some trees & herbs to provide the shades...
Provide parking bays on either side of road and designated parking areas inside the pathway..
Provide seating arrangments, water & toilet facilities
Allocated designated areas for the fishemen community to have their boats harboured
anywy..something is better than nothin...and hopefully someone will have such sorts of vision...its only a suggestion...

Colin, what you have said is absolutely correct. Currently, the people behind the developments are thinking about only about the Kollam Port's need of a 4-lane road.
It is true that there are purposeful ignorance and vested interests within the bureacrats to block the development of the port and the region which our minister himself has reiterated a number of times.
But anyway, there is scope for the walkway in future as the possibility of reclaiming land and building it. But it may take time.
One intersting thing I have noticed when I visited the place is that several people are going to the extreme end of the 2.1 KM long break water in cars to enjoy the Kollam coast in the evenings. It would be a stumming view from there especially when all the lights are illuminated.

Currently, no updates. Since it is a central goverment aided project, it is sure to realize. And Shibu Baby John will be keen on materializing it as it will generate thousands of jobs.

sreejith010 July 19th, 2011, 09:31 AM @Reghubahi, Once again we are very thank full on you for showcasing our city. It's very very glad so see that most of infrastructure projects and city beautification projects in city coming to its final stage except SP Office flyover. Kollam city corporation and our MLA PKG have a crucial role in it.
But it's high time to think beyond kollam city corporation. Infrastructure outside kollam city is stlll poor and these areas are growing faster than corporation area. Good connectivity between fast growing towns like karunagapally, kundara and kottiyam and connectivity between these towns and kollam city are very much important to the development of kollam city and kollam district.
I heard a proposal of four lining of kottiyam- kundara road. Don't know what happened to that one. This road will become a major bloodline of kollam after kollam technopark become operational as this is the road which connect kundara to trivandrum technopark and airport. Hope our bureacrats will understand these things.

Yes this 4-lane road was envisaged by MA Baby especially for connecting Kollam Techno Park with Trivandrum Techno Park and the Airport to reach there in an hour or 1 hr 15 mins.
I think the priliminary steps for this road was already started during the LDF rule. Basically, it is widening of the road from the current 2-lane to 4-lane. Land aquisition is required in the along the 13 KM stretch from Kottiyam to Kundara Mukkada. From Kundara to the Kollam Techno Park, the remaining 3 KMs will be a 2 lane road.
Now, since the government has changed, there may be a slowness in the work. As MA Baby is still the MLA from Kundara, the work is expected to be completed along with the work of Techno Park at Kundara in a phased manner.
There was also a proposal to connect this road from Kundara with a new road from Karunagapply so that this entire stretch from Karunagapally to Kottiaym will be a semi circular ring road that bypasses Kollam city.
Reghu July 19th, 2011, 03:01 PM But it's high time to think beyond kollam city corporation. Infrastructure outside kollam city is stlll poor and these areas are growing faster than corporation area. You are correct. If Kollam has to develop as a major city of the region, we need to look up at the overall development of all the towns in the district. Since the north - south distance of the district is mere 55 KMs it takes only 30 - 40 mins to reach the city from Oachira or Paripally.
I think we can categorize the towns according to the distance and with a Greater Kollam perspective.
Category - 1 (Chavara, Kundara, Anchalumoodu, Kannanallore, and Kottiyam)
Chavara, Kundara, Kannanallore, Anchalumoodu, and Kottiyam should be integrated with the city corporation providing better road infrastructure, flyovers at all railway crossings, residential areas with good drainage, drinking water, and waste treatment plants.. etc.
KSRTC City service buses especially circular services should be introduced to all the important centres within the city. Kollam Byapass is the key and future roads can be envisaged to connect to
Category - 2 (Karunagapally, Kottarakkara, Paravur, and Chathannor)
Widening of NH-47 and NH-208 will resolve the basic road infrastructure issue. It would be ideal to widen the exisiting roads Chathanoor - Kottarakkara and Kottarakkara - Karunagapally with a link road outside Kottarakkara town.
More industries and future IT parks can be planned at these road stretches as land acquisition will not be a major issue compared to those near the city areas.
MEMU services will be helpful for better access of the towns Karunagapally and Paravur.
Coastal road completion and bus services to Paravur through the coastal route will take only 20 mins to reach the the tourist town.
Category - 3 (Ochira, Punalur, Anchal, Shasthancottah, Puthoor, Pathanapuram, Paripally, Chadayamangalam)
These towns should get overall development and since they are located around 30 to 40 KMs away from the city, better road infrastructure would be the basic need especially for towns such as Chadayamangalam, Pathanapuram, Anchal, etc. Major development plans should be envisaged specifically for these towns including educational and toursm sectors. It would be ideal if Pathanapuram become a municipality for the development of the eastern parts of the district.

Road projects mentioned in this budget(Districtwise).
Kollam District
Neendakara-Velliyazheekkal Coastal road (Kollam)
Chirattakonam-Melila-Kunnikode road (Kollam)
Valakam-Pathanapuram-Sabarimala Bye-pass road (Kollam, Pathanamthitta)
Thangassery-Thirumullavaram-Maruthady-Sakthikulangara Road (under stimulas package continuation)
Sorry for any errors.
Hi Sreejith, if you look at the budget allocation for roads in Kollam district, the mentioned Kottiyam - Kundara - Karunagapally road has not fund allocation. This road was a prestigious one for our district especailly due to the upcoming Kollam Techno Park and as it can serve as a better bypass compared to the existing bypass as this route is not through the city.
They should have allocated something for this road instead of the Thangassery-Thirumullavaram-Maruthady-Sakthikulangara Road which is infact a coastal road in a highly congested and dense region.
Aji Kollam July 19th, 2011, 04:13 PM Reghu

Now all hope remains on M K baby. He is the only one who can do something for this road as it is in his constituency by using its political power. Also technopark is the prestigious project of MKB. But Reghu, process of widening this road already started during LDF rule. So how this govt change affect the road project?
And one more thing. After technopark become operational, traffic in between kollam and kundara will be more. I mean already busy road become more busy resulting big traffic problem. :bash::bash: So kollam-kundara road need special attention like any other major road project in kerala.

Sreejith, my point was there is no special fund allocation for the Kottiyam - Kundara - Karunagapally road especially as it is one of the most important road for the development of the district. After the government change we are not hearing too much about this road work and even the techno park work progress.
Probably, MA Baby can put more pressure on the development of both these projects especially as one of his projects (IIMC) has defintely become a damp squib as it is shifted.
Regarding, the Kollam - Kundara NH-208 development, flyovers are required at Chandanathope, Keralapuram, Elampallor, Mukkada, and Pallimukku junctions along with widening of the road to a 4-lane one.
Emapallor and Mukkada flyovers are very important for the development of Kundara town as the industrial town is chocked and bottlenecked with railway crossing at every important junctions. The situation will aggravate after the Punalur - Schencottah BG conversion is over.

U have done a fabulous photo shoot in Kollam.
Thank you, Aji. I will post more snaps shortly. Infact, I was so thriled by the beautification process of MG Park, Children's Traffic Park & Amusement Park, Residency Bunglow and the Adventure Park. Though work is in progress and yet to be finished, the area is very clean and maintained well unlike previously. I think the corporation is doing a good job now and there are lot of discussion going on about projects such as Bus Terminal, Parking tower, Internation Convention centre, Underpass, a flyover from railway station to collectrate Jn. etc. etc.
Though these are only mooted or proposed, these kind of healthy and productive discussion were not there atleast an year before.
The important thing is even the corporation, local MLA's and MP has realized that tourism is a major industry for Kollam's development. Hence, they are promoting the backwater tourism related programs and projects including the Ashtamudi Jalothsavam.
Kudos to Mayor Prasanna Earnest. The mayor herself has earnestly requested the Chief Minister, Tourism Minister and others concerened to include Kollam in all brochures of Tourism related publishings from India.
Another important factor for tourism will be the upcoming Five Star hotel at Thevally which will give real impetus to the backwater tourism as per the owner Ravi Paillai.
The Indian President's visit of the hotel on August 29 along with the Ashtamudi Jalotsavam will be a great fillip.
Also, the Kollam MP is arranging an all India conference of all the state tourim ministers in Kollam prior to that for discussing the district's tourim potential.

This will encourage more IT firms to set up their operations in Kollam technopark.

Karunagappally is a fast growing urban centre in south kerala. It is the gateway to Amritapuri, the abode of Mata Amritanandamayi. The growth of the spiritual and social movement led by the Mata (Amma to her followers) has contributed significantly to the transition of Karunagappally from an agrarian setting to a modern town.

Reghu July 28th, 2011, 07:59 AM The Theeradesa Samrakshana Samithy has submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy highlighting the development needs of the coastal belt and shortcomings in the revised State budget.
Samithy president Fr. Ferdinand Kayavil and secretary Gilton Augustine said the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government had made a budgetary allocation of Rs.18.76 crore for the development of the Kollam port.
The revised budget had slashed it to Rs.7 crore. The development of the port and the coastal road had to progress simultaneously. So, the work on the Port-Vaddy road should be completed at the earliest.
Land acquisition for the development of the port-Kochupilamoodu road should also be completed without delay, they said in the memorandum.
The LDF government had evolved a Kollam package and allocated Rs.120 crore for it. The package comprised various schemes for the development of the coastal areas. The present government had reportedly withdrawn the package, the representation said.
Dredging should be completed soon and an auction hall for traditional fishermen constructed. Locker rooms should be constructed for the safe storage of fishing gear. Restrictions should be imposed on the entry of fishing boats from other States. Land in the coastal area should not be earmarked for other projects. Steps should be taken to ensure hygiene at the Tangasseri harbour complex, the samithy office-bearers said.
They expressed hope that the demands would be considered positively.

Buddy, thanks for your efforts of showcasing Karunagapally one of the fastest growing urban towns in Kerala. It would be great if you can post latest snaps and scenes of Amrithapuri premises as well as the tourist spots in and around the town.
There is great commercial growth in Karunagapally especially in the last 3 to 4 years. Also it is great that North Kollam is fast developing compared to South Kollam.

Aji Kollam July 30th, 2011, 11:26 AM Kollam has always been a conservative city, be it about shopping, housing or for that matter, anything under the sun. Very reluctant to new things.
15 years back when i went to a watch shop on the main road, y there is no titan showroom while even smaller towns have it. he said, If I make this a showroom, half will not even enter my shop. That is the psychology of Kollamites then.
Slowly they are changing and for good.
U can expect bigger commercial ventures or flats in Kollam, but it will take more time. When they come, they will come in a flurry.
THE CHANGING PHASE HAS BEGUN FOR KOLLAM.

Vinod, your points are correct.
My point was Karunagapally is fast growing especially in the commercial and shopping sector in the last 3 to 4 years. You can see a flurry of projects. Even the first Multiplex in Kollam may be opened in Karunagaplly. Karunagapally KSRTC Bus station it is just 25 KMs away from Chinnakada by road.
The land price is Karunagapally is the highest in the district. The main reason is due to NRI investment and money. It will continue. Another advantage is the Amrithapuri Ashram which is an international pilgrim destination. Moreover, new industries/factories, though not very big, have started at Karunagapally during the LDF rule.
Proximity of Chavara industrial and Kayankulam NTPC industrial regions are other advantages that leads people to settle down in the town. Lot of good educational institutions especially from the Amritha University also a plus. Alumkadavu and other tourist destinations plus Ochira temple nearby makes it a tourist pilgrim destination as well.
Over and all, the future of the Karunagaplly is very bright. Hence I mentioned northern part of Kollam is developing fast. Infact, you may see much faster developments in the coming future. Anyway, it is great to know from you that all the towns in Kollam are developing fast.:)

heard that Mr.Pillai is buying Leela resort at Kovalam.

robin_a_p August 11th, 2011, 03:28 PM So what will happen to Leela's proposed five star project in Ashtamudi?
RAVIZ is going to be a LEELA Hotel as it will be managed by LEELA. I think LEELA's proposal was for this hotel itself and not for a separate one. Even the Kovalam hotel will continue to be LEELA Kovalam for next 30 years as per the agreement between RP and Leela.

But the proposed Leela Lake Ashtamudi is not in Kollam city. It was proposed somwhere between Ashtamudi and Mundro Islands and is planned as hotel resort comprising 80 Villa's.
Not sure there plan was to rename Raviz to Leela Lake Ashtamudi:nuts:. There idea was to have a hotel in an inland backwater surroundings which is calm and serene.
Reghu August 12th, 2011, 09:45 AM Rs.350-crore project under Central scheme
Mayor Prasanna Earnest has said that the Kollam Corporation aims at a slum-free city at the earliest through the implementation of the Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY).
Kollam has become the first city in the State to complete the basic formalities to implement the Central scheme. According to Ms. Earnest, the dilapidated municipal colony near the SMP Palace and the Kappalandimukku colony were earmarked for RAY. While 270 families live in the former colony, 70 live in the latter. Though the SMP Palace colony comprises apartments, the families there live in slum-like conditions.
The Mayor said another colony was also being considered by the corporation for RAY. But since the colony is on a Central government land, the Corporation has to purchase the land first.
She said that while the survey mapping of the two colonies had been completed, the socio-economic survey being conducted by the Centre of Science and Technology for Rural Development (Costford) would be completed by August 15, following which a project would be prepared and submitted to the Centre for approval.
The RAY for Kollam city is a Rs.350-crore project. While the city corporation will contribute 20 per cent of the plan, the State government and the Centre will contribute 30 per cent and 50 per cent respectively.
Ms. Earnest said RAY would be implemented in the city in association with the EMS Housing Scheme. Facilities for the colonies to be covered by RAY would include toilets, electricity, drinking water, and anganwadis. The Kudumbasree was the nodal agency for implementing the scheme. The Corporation had completed the basic formalities by ensuring people's participation, she added.
Rs3.5bn slum-free plan for Kerala city From Gulf Times
Kollam became the first city corporation in the Kerala to complete the preliminary works like surveying and mapping of slums in the run-up to the rollout of Rs3.5bn development works under the Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) scheme.
Based on the socio-economic survey - which will be completed fully by August 15 - the corporation will prepare a concrete slum-free plan of action to submit to the Centre for early approval and implementation. The plan envisages making the corporation slum-free in a phased manner.
The action plan, being prepared in accordance with the guidelines of the scheme, will include construction and renovation of houses with minimum area of 25 sq metres, civic amenities like toilets, electricity and drinking water, community centres, commercial establishments, night shelters, and houses for renting, with an expected total outlay of Rs 3.5bn.
Five city corporations in the state have been selected for the ambitious scheme that seeks to achieve slum-free urban development with the help of the state governments.
The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation had asked the corporations last month to prepare the preliminary works and submit the action plans on a priority basis. Kudumbashree is the nodal agency for implementing the scheme in the state.
While completing the preliminary works, the Kollam corporation has ensured participation of the people in all stages.
City councillors and resources persons from the selected slums were given orientation while skilled slum-dwellers were involved in conducting the preliminary survey, covering all homes.
Meetings were held to make the slum-dwellers aware of the entire project and involvement.
Based on the findings of the survey, a comprehensive action plan will be prepared by the expert panel. The works will then be launched as soon as the project gets approval and a pilot project would be executed in the meantime.
“The concerted efforts by the officials, elected representatives and the people made it possible to finish the preliminary steps in time. Stress was given to ensure the people’s participation right through surveying, planning and implemnting the action plans,” said Kudumbashree executive director Sarada Muraleedharan, while lauding the city corporation.

Reghu August 15th, 2011, 08:21 AM CPI(M)leader and former Minister P.K. Gurudasan has welcomed the Centre's move to set up a Cashew Board.
Talking to The Hindu here on Sunday, he said such a board was a long-standing demand of the State.
The Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry had recently asked the Planning Commission to prepare the roadmap for setting up a Cashew Board for the growth of the industry.
The directive came after the Planning Commission noted in its meeting on June 14 that the formation of a Cashew Board would pave way for the growth of the cashew sector, Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jyotiraditya Scindia had informed Parliament recently.
The board should be based in Kollam, the hub of the cashew-processing industry. Kollam district had 700 cashew-processing factories which employed around three lakh persons, most of them women, Mr. Gurudasan said.
No other traditional sector had so many employees concentrated in a single district. In fact, 75 per cent of the cashew industry was based in Kerala. The industry had been earning foreign exchange worth Rs.3,000 crore annually through the export of cashew kernels. Domestic sales also accounted for an equal figure, he said.
The moves to base the proposed board outside the State on the basis of raw nut production cannot be justified. Kollam had a century-old association with the cashew-processing industry, he said. It was on account of the importance of the cashew industry that Kollam was accorded the status of ‘town of export excellence for cashew' by the Union government. The State government owned two large cashew-processing institutions which functioned as model employers in the sector, he said.
On the raw nut production front, the State government had constituted the Kerala State Agency for Cashew Cultivation. The Centre had provided an assistance of Rs.58 crore, he said.

Reghu August 26th, 2011, 11:10 AM As a prelude to the President's Trophy Boat Race, a banana boat ride will be held at the race course on August 28 and 29. These are inflatable boats in the shape of a banana hauled by a motor boat. Adventure riders sit on top of the inflatable boats and sail through the waters experiencing a speed boat effect.
The programme is being organised jointly by Goa-based National Institute of Water Sports and Delhi-based Annals Sports and Leisure Management (ASLM) India Limited. hope, Christy L Fernandez (Secretary to the President of India) who hails from Karunagapally can influence the central/state govts t get it done!
Reghu August 30th, 2011, 08:18 AM hope, Christy L Fernandez (Secretary to the President of India) who hails from Karunagapally can influence the central/state govts t get it done!
Yes, Pradgp. Christy Fernandez initiatives and deeds are giving good hopes for Kollam. He is showing genuine interest in the development of Kollam. It is his efforts that helped to bring President of India for the boat race in Kollam.
As per Christy's comments yesterday, president Prathibha Patil is really impressed by the beauty of Ashtamudi Lake and hotel Raviz. The president is accompanied by her husband and a team of cooks. She will get good flavour of Kollam in the 3 days she is in Kollam.
The 5 star hotels Raviz and Beach Orchid are a big boost for Kollam's tourism.
The proposed Leela Lake Ashtamudi and the planned 5 star hotel (not confirmed) at Koickal in the city by the owner of Nila Palace will also give enough fillip to Kollam tourism.
The renovated and scenic Kollam Beach along with the spruced up Ashramam Tourist Village gives the city a new look and the the recent developments have evoked great interest in the local tourism sector as well.
The most important project needed for the beach tourism sector in Kollam district is the Thirumaullavaram Beach resort project. Government can give necessary coastal zone exemptions so that private projects come up there. Fernvalley group had a plan to start a 5 start resort at Thirumullavaram earlier. But it is not heard about now.
We need tourist infrastructural developments at Mundroe Islands, Sambraniodu, Vellimon, Paravur, Thenmala, Shasthancottah, Jadayu Park, Kuttalam, Chavara Thekkumbhakom...etc...etc. The scenic locations and potential tourism spots of our district are numerous.
The time has reached to captalize this huge potential and as PKG mentioned in his tourism package, the envisaged 2000 crore tourism package for Kollam may be first big step towards an ambitious dream. Lets hope the central and state goverenments will approve this most coveted and ambitious project.
Reghu August 30th, 2011, 08:27 AM ^^I think P K Gurudasan is hard working for his constituency. Great work.
PKG is one of the best MLAs Kollam has ever seen. His last 5 years tenure as Kollam MLA has made a big impact in the changing face of Kollam City.
His contribution to tourism, port, and road infrastructure is tremendous. If anybody feels there is any change to Kollam's face compared to what Kollam was in 2006, it is mainly due to this visionary leader. But there is a lot to do and Kollam is far behind compared many peer cities.
He has already come up with many great projects including Link Canal Project, Ashtamudi Tourism Package connecting Kollam Ports development, new road projects across Ashtamudi Lake from Uliyakkovil to Thannikkamukku as well as Link Road extension through Ashtamudi Lake coast to Thoppilkadavu. It is left to the state and central government to approve it and materialize it.

Yes, I also feel the same. If the IGNOU regional campus was to be shifted to Vithura in Thiruvananthapuram, then why the UDF or Shibu Baby John gave hopes to the people of Chavara and Kollam:bash:. Shibu and UDF now says the LDF proposed PVC pipe factory at Chavara is also shelved. These news are really disheartening for Kollam who was just emerging from the shadows of underdevelopment.
Another important thing is the current ministry has not made any significant comment or proposals for the tourist development of Kollam though every one knows about the district's potential especially in the wake of the last two weeks activities related to tourism. The South India tourism seminar was conducted in Kollam and every came to know the potential of tourism here including the honourable President of India.
It is high time UDF ministry and government to wake up and look at the proposals that PK Gurudasan's team and Mayor of Kollam have submitted to the government. Otherwise, the next LS polls will be a dismal one for them.
I am not posting the following screeshots to evoke any debate on politics, but we cannot deny certain facts. This post is only for reading not for any reply.

If the HQ is shifted to Amrithapuri, then Amrithapuri may become the foremost centre of Higher education in Kerala with more higher educational institutions likely. Anyway lets hope for the best for Karunagapally and Kollam. Atleast, now we can forget about IGNOU regional centre and look forward to Amritha Vishwa Vidhypeetam HQ to our district. ^^

Reghu September 7th, 2011, 07:31 AM Minister for Public Works V.K. Ebrahim Kunju inaugurated the newly constructed Kochupilamoodu bridge across the Kollam canal in the city on Tuesday.
Constructed at a cost of Rs.2.50 crore, it is one of the important links that bridges the western and eastern parts of the city. The new bridge was constructed after demolishing the old colonial bridge.
In his inaugural address, the Minister said the construction of the flyover across the railway line at the SP Office Junction in the city would be over in six months. He said half the construction work was over but the work now came to a standstill following a dispute with the contractor.
Clear directions had been given to the Public Works Department (PWD) officers and the contractor that construction of the Rs.16 crore flyover had to be completed in six months time. The Minister said that the government was committed to the development of Kollam. All development needs of the city would be met.
He said the Kochupilamoodu bridge, though small, would render a big service to the people of Kollam. It was the initiative of P.K. Gurudasan, MLA, which had resulted in the early completion of the bridge, the Minister said. “When it comes to development, there will be no politics,” he said. Mr. Gurudasan presided over the function. Mayor Prasanna Earnest delivered the keynote address. A.A. Aziz, MLA; and District Collector P.G. Thomas spoke. PWD superintending engineer V. Vijaya Kumar presented a report and executive engineer Thomas Mathew welcomed the gathering. Assistant executive engineer Shoba Unnithan proposed a vote of thanks.

A Fork list for handling the cargo will be implemented soon in this regard. A major crane will also be installed at Kollam Port shortly.
The port is expected to be a full fledged one by December this year and would be able to cater the needs of medium sized vessels.
The district authorities and legislative members from Kollam have already submitted an ambitious 10000 crore Kollam Port development package to the President of India for the overall development of Kollam city and the Kollam coast.
The new objective is Kollam's development through Port and Tourism development. Indeed all the potential is there in Kollam for this.^^

It has topped out 4 to 5 floors I guess. I have passed the location by bus recently but could not take any snaps. The location is good and is on the NH-47 side between Vellayittambalam and Ramankulangara. The Ashtamudi Lake can be viewed from the top floors since it is a 10 storeyed one and the lake is not far away. But is not very near to the banks of Ashtamudi lake such that of Artech Lake Castle.
Probably, other forum friends can update other information or may correct my information if something is wrong.

It would be great if they have plans to have a big campus at Karunagapally in future such as the Banaras Hindu University campus at Varanasi or the Aligad University Campus. This may require additional 500 to 600 acres extra for this. It will be tough task to acquire this land as Karunagaplly has one of the highest land price in Kerala.

Kollam is the ideal place as we lack good higher education campuses and aptly because Mata's birth palce is Kollam. Lets hope for the best. The shifting of HQ to Kollam will me a major fillip to the education and IT sector in Kollam.
In future (maybe 10 to 15 years later) there may be lot of vacant land at Neendakara - Chavara - Karunagapally coastal belt especialy after the mineral extraction from sand in the Arabian coast. These land can be used for IT parks. Shibu Baby John has already mentioned about this saying that the vacant land after use of mineral extraction will used for IT and Electonic parks.

It would be good if the HQs is shifted to Amritapuri but shortage of space in the bottle necked area at Vallikavu will be a big hindrance to future expansion.
The campus at Ettimadai here in coimbatore sprawls across 400 acres in a beautiful location by the western ghats side and the Walayar forests - it's a serene and exotic location..... There's lot of space available for future expansion
Even though the HQs is here , most of the people here in the admin wing are mallus........

Yes land acquisition is difficult in Karunagapally...but they can look for land near Shasthancotta - Bharanickavu regions as these regions are comparitively less occupied and cost less compared to the other regions nearby Amrithapuri.

navjot September 19th, 2011, 08:21 AM The much awaited Kollam-Kottappuram National Waterway, which will make drastic changes in the transport sector of the state, will be made fully operational before December 2012, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy announced here on Sunday.
Speaking after laying foundation stone for the Indian Maritime University's Kochi campus, the Chief Minister said only some stretches of this waterway remained to be completed now.
This is mainly because of some disputes with fishermen over the possible damage to their nets due to an increase in boat movements in certain stretches, he said.
Such issues would be resolved soon and the full waterway would be made available for service by making it part of the government's developmental activities for one-year.
Subsequently the waterway would be extended to Thiruvananthapuram and Neeleswaram, the Chief Minister said. Apart from the cost advantages in cargo transport sector, waterways can also contribute to boosting the tourism sector in the state, he said.
Recognising the importance of waterways the Centre had sanctioned Rs 225 crore for the development of Kovalam-Neeleswaram waterway couple of years back. "We have not been able to fully utilize that fund so far,'' the Chief Minister said.

Reghu September 19th, 2011, 09:29 AM MPs from Kollam Peethambara Kuruppu and Kodikunnil Suresh have submitted the railway needs of the district to the Raiway Board Member A P Mishra during hes visit to Kollam for inspecting the Punalur - Schencottah BG conversion progress. Mr. Mishra said that the work of the Punalur - Schencottah BG line conversion will be expedited and the line will be commisioned within 3 years.
Some of the railway needs from the MPs list are:
Start of MEMU services from Kollam to Kochi and Trivandrum
Infrastructural development of Kollam Junction Railway station
Immedeate Infrastructural development of Eravipuram, Kilikollur, Kundara, and Paravur railway stations
Footoverbridge over Kollam railway station to connect NH-47 and NH-208 to reduce traffic congestion
Second Terminal at the Upasana Hospital side with ticket counters
Extension of Kollam - Punalur train to Trivandrum with one First Class coach
Train service from Kollam to Ajmir
Increase the number of service of Trivandrum - Guwahati Express to 3 per week
Moreover, there is a general demand of shifting the exisiting offices, booking office, and the parcel services from the old railway station building (one of the oldest railway station buildings in Kerala) to the new railway station building. This will help to develop the Kollam Junction railway station to a modern railway station.
When the other important railway stations are struggling to find space for development, Kollam Junction Railway Station having around 300 acres of land within the railway station complex could be well developed as a modern one. Passengers have the general notion that the development of Kollam Junction is going at a snails pace due to callous attitude of the railway authorities.

Reghu September 19th, 2011, 09:40 AM Railway Board Member (Engineering) Aditya Prakash Mishra told Kodikunnil Suresh and N. Peethambara Kurup, MPs, that the gauge conversion work on the 42-km Punalur-Shencotta section would be completed in three years. Mr. Mishra reviewed the progress of work on Sunday.
The Punalur-Shencotta line is part of the Kollam-Tenkasi-Thirunellveli-Thiruchendur gauge conversion project.
While gauge conversion on the Kollam-Punalur section and the Shencotta-Tenkasi-Thirunelveli section is over, there has been no notable progress on the Punlaur-Shencotta gauge conversion work.
In the wake of this situation, Mr. Suresh and Mr. Kurup met the Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi and apprised him about the urgency to complete the work at the earliest.
It was on Mr. Trivedi's directions that Mr. Mishra inspected the progress of the work on Sunday.
Mr. Mishra who arrived at Punalur from Thiruvananthapuram via Kollam inspected the progress of the work accompanied by Mr. Suresh and Mr. Kurup. He told the MPs that a detailed report on the progress of the work would be submitted to Mr. Trivedi in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday.
A good portion of the work is along the Ghat section, which has sharp curves, steep gradients, tunnels and more than a century-old flyovers. It is due to these aspects that work along the Punalur-Shencotta section was taken up separately. A good portion of the section also passes through forest areas.
Mr. Mishra gave the three-year deadline to complete the work after holding detailed discussions with railway officers in charge of the gauge conversion work. From Punalur, Mr. Mishra travelled by road up to Aryankavu to inspect the progress of the work along the section.
He also inspected the 13 arch flyovers and the Kottavasal tunnel of the section.

Union Minister of Steel Discusses Various Steel Projects with Kerala Chief Minister
The Chief Minister of Kerala Shri Oommen Chandy called on the Union Minister of Steel Shri Beni Prasad Verma here today. Shri Verma discussed present status and future roadmap for the Joint Venture (JV) of SAIL and Steel Complex Limited, i.e. SAIL Steel Complex Limited with Shri Verma. The setting up of a Titanium Sponge Plant and setting up of Rare Earth Mineral Benificiation Project in joint venture with NMDC/KIOCL were also discussed in the meeting.
SAIL Steel Complex Limited (SCL) is a Joint Venture (JV) of SAIL and Steel Complex Limited, a Government of Kerala Enterprise, having equal share holdings of SAIL and Kerala Government of 43.8% each. Rest 12.4% shares of this JV are with the public. The management of this company is with SAIL. It is a 50,000 tonne per annum capacity mill for producing continuous cast billets. There is a proposal for setting up a 65,000 tonne per annum Rolling Mill for TMT Bars at Kozikode involving a capex of Rs. 50.00 crore. The billets from the JV Company would be used for conversion into TMT Bars and the same would be sold by SAIL for enabling better revenue realization. Salem Steel Plant of SAIL has been appointed as the central procurement agency for procurement of scrap for SCL.
SAIL is preparing a techno-economic feasibility report for setting up a Titanium based plant in Kollam, Kerala and the work is in its final stage. A decision regarding the business model would be taken on receipt of the feasibility report.
Government of Kerala had earlier proposed to NMDC to have Joint Venture project with Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation Ltd (KEMDEL) or Kerala Minerals & Metals Limited (KMML) for mining of Illmenite and other associated rare earth minerals and setting up a mineral beneficiation plant, in which KEMDEL/ KMML may have minority partnership with equity up to 26% and the rest of the equity with JV partner. The final product of the mineral beneficiation plant was proposed to be used in 10,000 Tonne per annum (TPA) Titanium Sponge plant and Titanium Alloy plant, which Kerala Government had proposed to set up in Joint Venture with SAIL.
Government of Kerala is now proposing to expand the mineral beneficiation and extraction activities by setting up on site beneficiation projects in Sri Lanka and Vietnam, as these countries have enough mineral resources and have shown interest in setting up such facilities there. Government of Kerala has proposed a Joint Venture between NMDC and Government of Kerala for setting up such projects, which would help in expanding plant capacities in Kerala to produce 10000-20000 TPA Titanium Sponge.
Considering high value realization of the final product, NMDC proposes to participate in value addition project of Titanium Sponge rather than restricting its activities up to mineral beneficiation only.
KIOCL has signed an MoU with Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation in presence of the Steel Minister and the Chief Minister to explore the possibility of iron ore mining, along with beneficiation and pelletisation facilities in the state of Kerala. The MoU will also look into the possibility of taking up other allied activities.

Cashew Sector expected to reap a lot of benefits.
2 Vessels to connect Kollam port and Vallarpadam Container Terminal from April 2012..
Taking a leaf out of the book of countries like the Netherlands, Denmark and Greece, Kerala is getting ready to tap its long coast line by starting its own coastal shipping project. The immediate plan is use this channel to ferry containers from Vallarpadam Container Transshipment Terminal and thus decongest roads leading to Kochi. The project is expected to be up and running by April 2012.
Director of Ports Jacob Thomas told Express that various shipping companies and industrial representatives have shown keen interest in the coastal shipping project. “The cashew industry in Kollam will be a major beneficiary. The same will hold true for the rubber industry concentrated in Kottayam and Pathanamthitta. The construction industry too will benefit through the export of raw materials like cement and marble,” he said.
Kochi-based Great Sea Shipping Pvt Ltd confirmed its plans to launch river-sea vessels providing container transportation services operating on both fixed schedules and charter basis. Regi Mathews, executive director, Great Sea Shipping, said the company would commence operations with two vessels connecting Kollam port and Vallarpadam terminal, by April 2012. Each vessel would have the capacity to carry 52 containers.
“We were among the first in the country to secure licence late last year following the revision of Indian River-Sea Vessel Act by Director-General of Shipping.
“The vessels are under construction at the Century Shipyard, Panavally, Alappuzha” Mathews said.
The project is expected to give a fresh lease of life for the ailing cashew industry. Around 35,000 containers of imported raw cashew is brought from Kochi and Tuticorin ports a year and around 10,000 containers of cashew kernels move out of Kollam for exports, both by road.
“The industry has to shell out around `13,000 per container by road. Once the costal shipping project gets going and
“Kollam port is activated, crores of rupees can be saved,” said Cashew Manufactures and Exporters Association General Secretary, Abdul Salam.
The cashew industry has reason to cheer as the expense incurred in transporting a container on the Kochi-Kollam sea route will be only 40 per cent of what it currently costs by road. If the vessels operate within 12 nautical miles, thus ensuring non-entry into the international sea route, the journey would take just over six hours.
