Reghu February 29th, 2012, 02:45 AM Report on Consumption of Drugs (including Liqour) increasing in Students (Courtesy: Malayala Manorama)
I have seen this report in today's Malayala Manorama. At the first impression, I felt, considering the importance of the subject, Malayala Manorama has given less coverage for this Report. This report has to be given more importance. Can I request the fellow Kollammates, the members of this Forum to share their thoughts and views on this Report.
First of all, let me put my views and comments on this report. According to me, this situation is created more by the parents, rather the carelessness or selfishness of the parents. The parents does not realise the impact on their kids when they celebrate with their friends in a liqour party. These kids see their parents are becoming liberal after consuming liquour, they likes the liqour rather than their parents... Then they become eager to know what it is after the consumption of liquor. Accordingly, may be this is one of the reason the younger generation is starting this habit.
I am not sticking on my point, definiely, each and every one in this Group will have their own views. Please take your time to share your views....
Let us all discuss, make sure we are not harming our next generation with our views, thoughts, attidues... All that want we want is to have a generation which gives more values towards the society.
Please repond.....

Reghu March 1st, 2012, 06:45 PM Railways give nod for Chinnakada underpass
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
State to pay Rs.3.28 crore
City Corporation to pay price for 21.5 cents
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The long wait for the commencement of the construction work of the Chinnakada underpass project is finally over. At a high-level meeting held in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday, the Railways had finally given the green signal for the project.
The development is a fruition of the persistent efforts of Kollam Mayor Prassanna Earnest since the past one year. For the realisation of the underpass, 21.5 cents of land owned by the Railways at Chinnakada is required to construct the northern side approach road of the project.
But when it came to handing over the land, the Railways wanted the State government to settle the price of about 47.6 cents of its land at Chinnakada taken over by the civic body earlier. The Railways also insisted on the market price for that land and the land required for the underpass project.
In view of the urgency of the underpass project, the State government through a Cabinet decision agreed to pay Rs.3.28 crore to the Railways as price for the 47.6 cents of land. At Wednesday's meeting, it was decided that the Kollam Corporation would pay the price for the 21.5 cents of land from the Plan Fund allocation.
Ms. Earnest said the Railways would transfer the land as and when the State government pays the price of the 47.6 cents of land plus an agreement from the city Corporation pertaining to payment of the price for the 21.5 cents of land. The meeting was held in the chamber of Minister for Urban Development P.K. Kunhalikutty.
Apart from the Mayor, Deputy Mayor G. Lalu, Local Administration Secretary R.K. Singh, Corporation Secretary Sabina Paul, Kollam RDO K. Salim, Railway Senior Divisional Engineer Venkateshwara Rao, Divisional Engineer R. Shaji Roy, and KSUDP deputy project director A.L. Charles were present.

Reghu March 10th, 2012, 04:34 PM Sreejith Ethu athu varsham eduthatha ?
This is 1904 - 1905 snap. The station was inaugrated in 1904.
Reghu March 10th, 2012, 04:44 PM Four of the nine long-distance Express trains from the State to metros and major cities and two services using Mainline Electric Multiple Units (MEMU) announced in the last Railway Budget are likely to remain on paper when Union Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi presents the 2012-13 Railway Budget on March 14.
This is the first time in the history of the State that the Railways has not been able to commence services of the sanctioned trains in the budget, said sources.
“There have been instances when trains were flagged off in the last minute using makeshift rakes. But, time is short and it is now certain that the trains would not commence services before the budget is presented in Parliament,” they told The Hindu .
Train no: 22207/22208 Bi-weekly AC Duronto Express in the Chennai- Thiruvananthapuram Central section; 19261/19262 Porbander- Kochuveli Express and Howrah- Mangalore Vivek Express via Palakkad are the trains that are yet to begin services.
The Janam Bhoomi Gaurav tourist train on the Chennai- Puducherry- Tiruchirapalli-Madurai- Kanyakumari- Thiruvananthapuram- Chennai sector is also yet to run.
The trains announced in the budget figured in the railway timetable 2011 with timings and train numbers.
Saturation of the railway network and shortage of rakes are cited as the main reasons for the delay in introducing the trains.
The commencement of MEMU services, which would have benefitted short distance commuters, on the Kollam- Ernakulam- Kollam and Kollam- Nagercoil- Kollam stretches, has been delayed for several reasons.
One of the rakes that arrived in Ernakulam was taken back to the headquarters of the zonal railway.
The rake had only eight cars and the services could not replace passenger trains operating with 14 to 15 coaches. Another problem is cleaning as all the cars had been provided with toilets as per the directive of the former Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The railways had announced in July 2011 that 66302/66303 Kollam- Ernakulam- Kollam MEMU and the 66304/66305 Kollam- Nagercoil- Kollam MEMU would operate six days a week.
The main hurdle was the delay in completing the maintenance-car shed in Kollam, a Railway official said.
Lack of automatic signals and network saturation are the other hurdles faced by the Railways in operating more MEMU services as in other places. The Thiruvananthapuram- Kollam section is 120 per cent saturated. The figure for Ernakulam- Kayamkulam (via Alappuzha) is 140 per cent, and via Kottayam 160 per cent. The Ernakulam- Thrissur section is saturated by 118 per cent.
Neglect by Railways has been a constant refrain in Kerala. As the Railway Budget 2012 nears, The Hindu takes stock of the situation across the State to see how far Kerala's rail travel dreams have become a reality, where they still remain unfulfilled and why.
Reghu March 13th, 2012, 11:08 AM Union Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi's announcement that the MEMU (Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit) services announced in the last Railway Budget will commence service from this month will make life easier for commuters travelling to the city from the suburbs.
The railway minister announced that two MEMU trains will be in operation by the end of March. The service was to begin in 2011 and the railway timetable of 2011 even listed the timings, but the service did not get off the ground then.
The MEMU trains will run between Ernakulam and Kollam via Aleppey and Kottayam. There are hopes that the state might get two more MEMU trains in the new budget, on the Ernakulam-Palakkad route. Passengers from the satellite towns of Kottayam and Alappuzha are eagerly awaiting MEMU service.
C. Raju, former chief engineer of Konkan Railway, said that MEMU is well suited to the state. “With the high number of short distance passengers, MEMU is ideal for the state. At present, the state has only a single MEMU service, from Palakkad to Shoranur. As many as 14 MEMU services can be started using the existing rail network.”
According to Mr Raju, the satellite towns and the small towns that interact with the city can be easily connected through MEMU services.
This will also help to decongest city roads to a great extent. By installing the automatic block signalling system (ABS), the capacity of existing railway tracks can be increased, he added.
President of the All-Kerala Rail Users’ Association, K.J. Paul Manvettam, said that the commercial capital city of Kochi needed more MEMU services.
“MEMU services should be run on the Ernakulam - Kollam - Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam - Shoranur - Palakkad routes,” he said.
The maintenance shed of MEMU trains at Palakkad is operational and the other shed at Kollam is yet to be functional. MEMU trains have engines on either end, and thus can set off in both directions quickly. Each train has nine bogies and can carry 1,800 passengers.

Aji Kollam March 22nd, 2012, 02:06 PM The budget for Kollam was a great disappointment.
If district hospital is elevated to a MCH, that will be a great thing.
Barring that everything is a null.
I am sad that the Kollam Port will lie idle further. I hope the govt: will do something for this...
Or else Kollamites will have to wait for turn of the LDF for some development.

Reghu March 28th, 2012, 07:37 AM K.P. Mohanan, Minister for Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, has said that the old building that housed the District Veterinary Centre (DVC) here will be converted into a farm museum. He said this while inaugurating the new building for the DVC here on Tuesday.
The Minister said the proposed museum would exhibit farming tools of yore and the old-time farming methods, and would function as a research centre. The museum would be established in association with the Department of Culture. Mr. Mohanan said he would be discussing the same with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy this week.
Organic farming
The traditional farming culture had to be maintained, he said, and added that thrust would be given to organic farming. “The government has already evolved various schemes for the purpose. If there is a will, the State has the potential to produce a major quantity of its food requirement,” he said.
P.K. Gurudasan, MLA, presided over the function. An ultra-sound scan facility in the new building of the DVC was inaugurated by Mayor Prasanna Earnest. A mobile veterinary hospital unit was inaugurated by District Paanchayat president R. Gopalakrishna Pillai. An animal welfare clinic was inaugurated by district panchayat vice- president B. Jayanti.
A mastitis control programme attached to the DVC was inaugurated by the development standing committee chairman of the district panchayat, S. Jayamohan. District Collector P.G. Thomas distributed certificates to the farmers.

Dude,
You are forcing me to post this.
You must be well aware that most of the kollam forumers are currently not based in Kollam. You have already posted the same thing a few days back and many times in the past. Some forumer would have definitely replied if he was currently in Kollam and passed by the site. If your relative has booked a flat there why dont you personally visit the site and take note of the development?
There is no point in clamoring for want of updates, even posting in capitals will not help. Please help in improving the thread content rather than being importunate.
regards and best wishes:)

I just decried about you posting the same post every week, not your post being in caps. 'Your friends' have already seen your same post last week. Why are you so impatient and importunate? Had someone passed by they would have posted updates. A majority of your posts have been with this regard. Be patient and wait for updates, rather than seeking updates every now and then.

New Bridge, parallel to the existing bottle-necked Old Iron Bridge, gets the green signal as the state and concerned construction company have reached a settlement on the tender amount.
The process of acquiring 2.5 cents of land to construct an approach road is nearing completion. The state had approved payment of a sufficient amount demanded by the land owner and an agreement has been drawn up between the concerned parties.
The Central Road Fund had already promised to provide a 10 per cent increase to the allocated amount of Rs 784.5 lakh. The tender amount is Rs 940 lakh. The remaining amount, apart from the CRF contribution, will be met by the state. It was regarding the state government’s share that negotiations were going on for long.
“It is expected that the paper work regarding the construction and agreement will be completed within a week. Construction work can be started within ten days from the day I receive the work order,” Kalanjoor Madhu of Mavanal Constructions told DC.
The bridge will be 76 metres long, 9.55 metres in width with three spans.
The bridge will have only one footpath since on the other side there is the Old Iron Bridge. The new bridge will be elevated in the middle to allow easy passage for boats through the national waterway beneath. It will take about a year to complete including the approach road, Natio-nal Highway officials said.

Turnover for the year too was at all-time high at Rs 613 crore. The company attributed this to improved sales realisation and higher margin for its main product titanium dioxide. The product diversification plan and higher capacity utilisation in its mineral separation unit were other factors that enabled it to achieve this performance, a company release said. The annual production and sales of one of the byproducts — Zircon —from the mineral separation unit also reached record levels to 5,213 tonne and 5,114 tonne respectively. The sale of another intermediate product, titanium tetrachloride at 1,893 tonne, was also the highest ever.Though the availability of raw material was a constraint, higher efficiency in production and better financial management helped in maintaining higher margins.
During this financial year, KMML commissioned its 500 tonnes per day titanium sponge project at Chavara, near Kollam, in a joint venture with Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre and Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory. India becomes the seventh nation in the world with the technology to produce titanium sponge, with the commissioning of this plant. The company also recently bagged the best PSU award from the state government for its performance during 2010-11.KMML has plans to set up magnesium recovery facilities in the titanium sponge plant. The proposal to increase the capacity of the titanium sponge plant to 1,000 tonnes per annum is also on the anvil. Several companies including public sector Midhani have shown interest for collaboration.

We already have a good avenue road at Ashramam...but more trees and beautification required there. Moreover, the new Ashramam link road, Kappalandimukku - Kadapakkada 4-lane road, and the Kollam Beach - Kollam Port 4-lane roads should be made avenue roads by planting beautiful flowering trees on either sides.
Atleast one side of the Ashramam link road should have trees if the other bankside is reserved for Boat race. A good planning and design is required here as this road has the potential of becoming the most sought after hangout place in the city in future.

Reghu April 13th, 2012, 07:25 AM Raising hopes of easing one of the biggest traffic bottlenecks in Kollam city, work on the much-awaited parallel Iron Bridge along the Taluk Office-High School junction stretch of National Highway 47 began on Wednesday with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) starting soil testing.
NHAI Assistant Executive Engineer S. Prasannan said the soil testing would decide the depth of the foundation for the pillars. An allocation of Rs.7.85 crore from the Central Road Fund (CRF) had been made for the construction of the bridge.
The bridge, across the Kollam canal, will have three spans. It will be 76 metres long and 10.5 metres wide. It will also have a footpath on one side. The present Iron Bridge is a narrow one that is unable to accommodate the traffic even after peak hours.

Paravur is just 12 KMs away from Kollam if you travel by the coastal road. But it is almost 27 Kms if you go by NH-47. Railway distance is the same 12 Kms.
Mayyanad panchayath is lying between Kollam corporation and Paravur municipality. Mayyanad panchayath is more urbanized and is a thickly populated residential region but most of the areas under Paravur muniicpality looks rural except for the core town area.

Kollamaites are closely watching what is happening over the last one year. It was a disappointing year after UDF came to power specifically for Kollam. No need to worry. Kollam will be back with a bang when the next ministry comes in (within an year most probably). With MAB in the Polit Buerea, the next ministry will have a strong representation from Kollam and this will boost Kollam's prospects again.

I agree with you. Kollam has lost its momentum in terms of infrastructural, industry, education and tourism developments. It is very sad.....! What is your source re:the expansion of the city corporation? What proabability is there for this to be so, and in the timeframe that you mention? What will be the area in sq.kms. if this is true? Are there any other corporations in Kerala which will see similar expansions? especially, Calicut or Cochin? Thrissur is already large in area so quite unlikely to see her boundaries redrawn soon.
Thx

Conversely, smaller metropolitan cities such as Malappuram, Thrissur, Kannur, Kollam, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram (all in Kerala); Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh); Vasai-Virar (Maharashtra); Dhanbad (Jharkhand); Surat (Gujarat) and Raipur (Chhattisgarh) are galloping ahead in the quest for expansion.

Is it only for MEMU service income or including expresses and passenger train earnings. By the way, MEMU service has not started from Trivandrum yet.
sudheeshnairs May 22nd, 2012, 02:39 PM ^^Isn't clear from the report?? It is general statement saying that QLN is the third revenue generating station after TVC & ERS. It is the total revenue generated through passenger traffic through ticket sales/reservations across all classes as well as the season tickets.
I don't think anybody would be bothered about the 'MEMU service income' as primarily it is a second class passenger fare as well as due to presence of season ticket holders.
Reghu May 23rd, 2012, 11:04 AM The public sector Rehabilitation Plantations Limited (RPL) is starting a ribbed smoked sheet (RSS) unit to produce top-grade natural rubber sheets. Labour Minister Shibu Baby John will lay the foundation stone for the unit at the RPL complex near Punalur on Friday.
According to statement from the RPL, the new unit will have an installed annual production capacity of 220 metric tonnes (800 kg a day). Top-grade sheets can be stored for more days and this will enable the company to profitably tap the market price fluctuations of natural rubber sheets.
At present rubber planters produce RSS grades 4 and 5 sheets and these reach the markets without any grade separation. The RPL unit will enable the company to produce RSS grades 1 and 2 sheets. The RPL is jointly owned by the Central and State governments. Sri Lankans of Indian origin rehabilitated during the 1960s as per an agreement between the then prime ministers of the two countries are the labourers of the company which owns over 2,000 hectares of rubber plantations.
The company has been making profits since 1980 and from 1986 onwards has been continuously paying the shareholders dividend to the State and Central governments.

A draw of lots would be held to give away gold coins to customers, who had made purchases for over Rs.5,000.
Reghu May 25th, 2012, 07:52 AM Hopes on commencement of the construction work on the remaining 8.35 km stretch of the Kollam bypass got a boost with a Central team conducting the alignment study of the stretch on Thursday. The main hurdle to the project is the need to construct three bridges.
The Central team was led by Y.K. Balakrishnan, Chief Engineer of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and M.P. Sharma, Chief General Manager of the National Highways Authority of India. The team also held a detailed discussion with District Collector P.G. Thomas on the project.
The main intention of the study was to probe whether the stretch could be constructed by avoiding the bridges. While one of the bridges will be more than 800 m long, a second bridge will be 575 m long. Both these will involve high cost of construction.
But following the inspection of the crucial points of the stretch at Kavanad, Aravila, and Kadavur, the team has come to the conclusion that the bridges are inevitable. The bypass connects the National Highway 47 from Mevaram in the south to Kavanad in the north, both points in Kollam city.
The total length of the bypass is 13.141 km. Out of that, a stretch of 4.8 km from Mevaram to Kallumthazham has been completed. What remains to be completed is the stretch from Kallumthazham to Kavanad. This stretch has to pass over the Ashtamudi Lake with the help of two bridges.
The National Highways unit of the State has submitted a project cost of Rs.206 crore for the completion of the stretch to the Central team. During the alignment study the team was also accompanied by the chief engineer of the Public Works Department A.S. Leena and executive engineers P.K. Rajeev Thomas and Sadananda Babu.
The team arrived for the study on request from Kollam MP N. Peethambara Kurup. Mr Kurup's representative K. Karunakaran Pillai also accompanied the team.

psanthosh May 27th, 2012, 06:04 AM KOLLAM: The long pending demand of the city dwellers for e-toilets will now be a reality soon. The district administration has decided to go the e-way and install e-toilets at selected points.
Construction of the four e-toilets in the city has almost been completed and they will be opened for the public from next month.
Two e-toilets are at Chinnakada Bus Bay premises, one at the Collectorate premise and the other is at the Pallimukku Junction.
These four toilets will start functioning once the electricity and water supply for these are approved by the Corporation.
In the neighbouring Thiruvananthapuram city, e-toilets have been functioning successfully at various points for the last few years.
According to G Lalu, deputy mayor, Kollam Corporation, e-toilets will help revolutionize the sanitation facilities in the city. Manohar Varghese, Director, Eram Solutions, the company behind installing the toilets, said that it is one of the most hassle free systems and public can avail it without any problem.
The doors of the toilet can be opened by inserting coins. In case the user forgets to flush the toilet the automatic system cleans it.
The toilet would be connected with GPRS and the operation can be monitored from any remote location.
In case of any defect it can be detected at once and can be repaired instantly. He also added that the four have been installed at a cost of Rs 20 lakh.
He also added that more variants of e toilets which would help physical challenged people would be implemented in the city in the near future.

psanthosh June 1st, 2012, 03:35 AM The Cabinet on Thursday gave clearance for construction of major waste treatment plants in Kollam, Thrissur, and Kottayam. This is in addition to the facilities proposed in Thiruvananthapruam, Kochi, and Kozhikode.
Talking to the media after a special meeting of the Cabinet, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that the plants would use modern technology that would not pollute the surroundings. As the people did not have confidence about that, the government was thinking of a technology demonstration as first step.
The Chief Minister said the Cabinet had named the members of the Farmers' Debt Relief Commission to be headed by K.R. Udayabhanu. They were M.O. John, M. Narayanankutty, Ummer Pandikassala, M.J. Jacob, and A.K. Hamza, besides K.V. Ramakrishan (CPI-M) who would represent the Opposition.
Managing director of Marketfed T. Vikram would be given additional charge of State Civil Supplies Corporation.
Referring to the bail granted to Italian marines accused in the murder of Kerala fishermen off coast, Mr. Chandy said the prosecution had opposed the bail application. The prosecution had filed the charge-sheet in 90 days to prevent them from getting bail. However, the court had granted them conditional bail because the State was having an independent judicial system.
Replying to questions about the CPI(M) approaching court against reporting of investigation into murder of RMP leader T.P. Chandrasekharan, the Chief Minister said the party had the right to approach courts. At the same time, the media had the freedom to report what was happening in the State.

Jai1288 June 1st, 2012, 07:33 PM Fillip to bid to make Kollam port operational
: Minister for Ports K. Babu will launch the operations of a container forklift at the Kollam cargo port on June 4.
The arrival of the forklift has kindled hope that the port, which was inaugurated on October 18, 2007, would soon become operational.
Since its inauguration, the port has been largely lying idle. During the period, only one ship had handled cargo from the port, on June 18, 2009. That operation was formally launched by the then Minister for Ports M. Vijayakumar. In that operation, ballast and construction sand were exported to the Maldives.
Since then, no ship had called at the port.
This is in spite of the fact that the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government had announced that it would initiate measures to develop the Kollam port into a major port and had even appointed a New York-based professional organisation, Deloitte, as consultant for the development of the port.
The cashew industry here had placed much expectation on the port. It would have facilitated the industry to import raw cashew directly to Kollam instead of Kochi port. Similarly, cashew kernels could also be exported directly from here if the port became operational.
The port has been included in the navigation chart bearing number 2,104. The port has a basin with a draft of 7 metres.
The then government had also announced that the draft would be increased to 10 metres so as to enable the port to handle ships with 50,000 DWT.

Jai1288 June 1st, 2012, 07:45 PM Nod for Kollam port plan
The Cabinet has approved a scheme for developing the Kollam port under public-private partnership.
Ships have not yet started calling at the Kollam port which was inaugurated in October 2007. The development of the port will be carried out in two phases, according to K. Babu, Minister for Ports.
The basic infrastructure of the port will be developed by providing mechanical material handling equipment and cranes, comfortable connectivity and storage facilities in the first phase.
In the second phase, another wharf on the south-east direction will be constructed. The allocation for the first phase is Rs.111 crore and that for the second phase, Rs.125 crore.
The Minister has said that for construction of two auction halls at the Tangasseri fishing harbour and to install a channel buoy at the harbour the present government had sanctioned Rs.1.60 crore and Rs.36 lakh respectively.
Tender was invited for marketing operation and maintenance of Kollam port on 31 May 2012.
" Hope, let miracle happens!!!"

The inauguration of the fork lift operation by the minister is a mere gimmick. The fork lift was brought to the port nearly 4 months back and it took all this time to assemble it !!
A crane is yet to be brought to the port and it is such a dissappointment that the Govt has not been giving due consideration for the development of this port which was launched with huge fanfare.

Infrastructure: Kerala pioneered the concept of dedicated infrastructure with the setting up ofTechnopark, Thiruvananthapuram. The Centre has notified Technopark Phase-3 and Technopark,Kollam as special economic zones besides the existing Technopark Phase I and II SEZs.
Ports
Kerala has 17 minor ports, some of which have been in disuse for years. The government, as part of along-term coastal shipping project, has decided to develop seven of these: Vizhinjam, Kollam, Alappuzha,Kodungallur, Beypore, Ponnani and Azhikkal.
Supplementary Gas Infrastructure Project for entire State..
A Joint Venture Company, Kerala Gail Gas Limited (KGGL) has been formed between KSIDC and M/s. Gail Gas Limited. KGGL will take up activities like City Gas Distribution in Kerala, CNG Stations for KSRTC Buses, establishment of Gas Training Institute, laying of Spur Lines from GAIL's main pipeline, setting up of small Gas based small power generating plants etc. The total investment for the project is estimated at Rs.2,000 Crores ($400 million).
High Speed Rail Corridor Project from trivandrum to kasargod with Kollam as one of the stations.
The project is to set up a High Speed Rail Corridor from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod. The total length of the corridor would be around 650 Km and will have two parallel tracks each in standard gauge systems, which will be independent of the existing rail network in the State. The estimated project cost, for the 1st Phase from Trivandrum to Kochi, with a route length of 194 Km, is Rs. 45,000 Crores ($9 billion). A company by name ‘Kerala High Speed Rail Corporation Limited’ has been incorporated to implement the project. Starting with highest speed of 200-250 Kmph initially, trains with speed up to 400 Kmph are expected within 2-3 years of commissioning of the project. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) have conducted a Pre-Feasibility study and submitted the key plan for route alignment, identifying locations for 9 stations.

We have the right to vote and seeing the performance we can vote for the Govt in the nxt elections..

I bet kerala is going to change in the nxt 5 years and that will be the end of communalism in India.

Earlier in the day, an Assocham team led by Mr Rawat had met with the Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy; the Finance Minister, Mr K. M. Mani; and the Industries Minister, Mr P. K. Kunhalikkutty.
The MoU is likely to be signed during the ‘Emerging Kerala Global Connect' event to be held in Kochi from September 12 to 14, Mr Rawat told newspersons here.
Team members
Mr Anirudh Dhoot, chairman, Kerala Development Council, Assocham, and Mr U. K. Joshi, director in charge of south India, accompanied him.
Mr Dhoot formally released an Assocham-Frost and Sullivan study, titled, ‘Kerala: Road map for inclusive growth 2012' during the interaction with newspersons.
SECTORS IDENTIFIED
Proposed Assocham investments in the state will span sectors ranging from IT, biotechnology, BPO, nantotechnology, medical tourism, and herbals to SME clusters.
Mr Rawat said that the Chief Minister had sought help from Assocham to route badly needed investments to the state which had a perceived image problem.
In return, the industry body has assured its wholehearted support for routing maximum possible investment money into the state.
The Assocham has invited Mr Chandy to visit both New Delhi and Mumbai to attend dedicated sessions to network with industrialists and the investor community.
This is expected to happen ahead of the ‘Emerging Kerala' event.
The tentative dates for the Delhi session are July 16 and 17, Mr Rawat said.
DELHI, MUMBAI MEETS
The Chief Minister and some of his cabinet colleagues have agreed to visit Mumbai to attend a similar conference proposed to be held in August.
Mr Rawat observed that perceptions about the State have changed after the present government assumed office.
SME potential
According to him, SME clusters would be an ideal engine for growth of the state economy given the absence of large tracts of land for industrial purposes.
“In fact, we have commissioned another study to find a way to get around this problem and also promote the cluster-led growth,” Mr Rawat said.
MARKETING ON
Real estate, food processing, agriculture and hospitality are other sectors that the Assocham eyes for investment purposes in the State.
It has already started marketing these opportunities among diplomatic missions in Delhi and even in destinations abroad.
Mr Rawat expressed confidence that Kerala would be able to attract foreign direct investments into these sectors.
Videocon mulls white goods plant, IT park in State
Thiruvananthapuram, June 4:
Videocon Industries will set up a Rs 250-crore manufacturing plant for ‘white goods' in the State.
Stating this, Mr Anirudh Dhoot, director of the company, told newspersons here that the product range includes air-conditioners, washing machines and refrigerators.
PROJECT BLUEPRINT
Finer details would be worked out in the next three months and a final announcement made during the ‘Emerging Kerala Global Connect' event in September.
Mr Dhoot said Videocon Industries would also invest Rs 100 crore in an IT park here, along the lines of those being promoted in West Bengal and Chhattisgarh.
The company has an entrenched presence in real estate catering to the niche area of IT infrastructure parks, he added.
The white appliances plant is expected to generate direct and indirect employment opportunities for 500 to 800 people.
Additionally, it will spawn ancillary industries that can bring in investments and generate jobs.
PILOT TEAM
The land for the projects will be identified in due course. A pilot team from the company will visit various investment zones the State government has set up here.
The company is looking for a city with available port infrastructure for the white appliances plant since it intends to export 20 per cent of its production.
It is at present exporting these products from existing bases to South Africa, West Asia and Sri Lanka. Last year, export revenues amounted to Rs 500 crore.
Mr Dhoot said consultants Ernst and Young have been commissioned to prepare a detailed project report on the proposed manufacturing plant in Kerala.
ELECTRONIC GOODS
The company is also a leading player in electronic goods manufacturing, and would not be averse to looking at opportunities here provided they make business sense.
According to Mr Dhoot, tourism and IT have excellent opportunities for growth in the State.
Being chairman of the Kerala Development Council of Assocham, he would want the State to look at new areas of growth as in SME clusters, medical tourism, technology parks and BPO.
Nearly 300 investors and industrialists from Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts turned out for the district-level meet held recently at delhi and mumbai.
British delegation comes calling to invest in Kerala-
In a major boost to the ‘Emerging Kerala’ Global Connect campaign, Britain has shown keen interest in some big-ticket projects in the core sectors of the state. A high-level British delegation visited Kerala and assured that project profiles of the state would be made available to the major business houses there.
Mike Nithavrianakis, British deputy high commissioner in Chennai, held a string of high-level meetings with chief minister Oommen Chandy and senior officials to discuss investment opportunities that Kerala has planned in the core sectors.
.rightDiv2{float:right;position:relative;width:220px;padding:1px} .leftDiv2{float:left;position:relative;width:140px}
The Kerala team apprised
him of a number of major upcoming projects, including NIMZ (National Investment Manufacturing Zone), development of minor ports, excellence in higher education, LNG-based power plants and development of inland waterways.
“The British officials expressed keen interest in the projects and also promised to share these project profiles with top companies in the UK,” said V Somasundaran, additional chief secretary (industries).
Plans are also on the anvil to bring in someone from the ministerial level from the UK for the Emerging Kerala Summit, he added.
In particular, the British team evinced interest in sectors like information technology, healthcare, infrastructure and education, which incidentally are the core sectors of the ‘Emerging Kerala’ Global Connect event. The event will be held in Kochi in September this year.
The British team held separate meetings with K Jayakumar, chief secretary, Rajeev Sadanandan, principal secretary (health), and TK Manoj Kumar, principal secretary (tourism).
Parleys were also held with the chief executive officer of Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited, managing director of Kochi Metro Rail and the director of Asian School of Business. The team also visited Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram and Technocity in Pallipuram to get first-hand knowledge of the activities and business opportunities there.
Singapore, Taiwan and Canada have already shown interest in Kerala with a number of investment proposals. The interest shown by Britain will give a major fillip to achieving the objectives of the ‘Emerging Kerala’ branding exercise.
navjot June 4th, 2012, 07:34 PM Just by the naming Emering Kerala nothing is gonna happen. Kollam is always at the receiving end when comes to the investment prospects. Nobody is interested....UDF ...not at all as it is not their vote bank
You know something..... GIM (Global Investors Meet) is going to be held at Bangalore in a couple of weeks time (June 2012). No common man or civilian is discussing about it.........but lot of investment to happen here for sure. Because investors are interested due its potential and huge human resources...moreover the cosmopolitan, multilingual, professional culture of the people.
But each and every common man in Kerala is talking about GIM and Emerging Kerala whenever our gimmick politicians talk about these....but what actually happens at the end .....some textile show room or shopping mall projects...even the materialized pojects are not worth for the people or the public...This is the plight of Kerala and our political and visionary leaders softskills:ohno:.
Absolutely correct Reghu bhai.. You said it... Cant agree more..... All the mentioned for Kollam like Dairy farm at Kulathupuzha and Technopark have already been implemented.
Nothing has happened in Kollam for the last 1 year- it's very much evident from the lack of activity in our thread. Nothing is gonna happen for the next 4 years as well.
I do not support any political party but whichever party rules should give equal attention to all the districts irrespective of vote banks.....

I am constantly in touch with my relatives and friends at Kollam for the latest projects. But they say only some textile and jewellery shops...nothing significant...Nothing is heard about Cashew Board, Kollam Port and Kollam Techno Park ....not too much of activity....Kollam Bypass and Underpass...only declarations and procalmation...no implementation....the so called LDF proposed roads such as extension of Link road, Kottiyam - Kundara - Karinagapally road...etc..etc all forgotten by the new government...
canty_kollam June 6th, 2012, 08:58 AM After reading the forums i have some point of views to make
1.Growth in the next 10 years will be different from what we have seen? It will be driven by the state govt with a meekly connected central govt.Competition is hotting up.when we see a Gujarat taking leadership that will be embraced by other states.
2.High fares is good for Kerala economy. It will attract more labourers , you must remember that some else debit is one's credit and hence the more you spent the more money u are pooling back into the economy thereby creating a demand in the economy. After all its all about demand and eventually will drive prosperity and growth.
3.We should remember that large jobs creation would be possible only with Thousands of SME's. The days of where Govt and Large private enterprise job(TCS,Infosys,wipro--- )creation are gone. The people of kerala should be innovators and not inventors they should be entrepreneurs and not spectators.unless we realize the potential of resources and turn them to economic value they will not be any growth. Bauxite will have been of no use and Penicillin plants would have been just been another weed if great men had not seen the power of innovation.

A study undertaken by the Ahmedabad-based Centre for Environment Planning and Technology (CEPT) University for preparing a report for a slum-free Kollam city under the Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) scheme is nearing completion. As part of the study, a meeting between corporation councillors and officers with the RAY and CEPT University representatives was held at the corporation council hall on Monday.
The aim of the meeting was to collect details from the councillors on how to clear the 103 slums in the city through development programmes.
The RAY scheme also envisages preventing new slums from cropping up in its target areas. The slum at the SMP Palace area has been targeted for the pilot project in the city. The CEPT University representatives also visited some of the other slum areas of the city.
Under the RAY scheme, funds will be made available for constructing new buildings and providing basic infrastructure in the slum areas. The Corporation has to provide land for the purpose. Each house to be constructed at a cost of Rs. 4 lakh will have an area of 320 square feet.

psanthosh July 2nd, 2012, 03:22 AM KFC fast-tracks funding of new enterprises
KOCHI: The Kerala Financial Corp (KFC) has said that funding of new enterprises proposed under the Kerala State Self Entrepreneur Development Mission (KSSEDM) being implemented under KFC will be completed in record time.
Under KSSEDM, major banks like Punjab National Bank (PNB), Canara Bank and State Bank of Travancore (SBT) are now providing funds for various enterprises which have been identified for incubation, according to Yogesh Gupta, chairman and financial director, KFC. "The first phase of registrations, scrutiny, selection and training has seen the emergence of 231 enterprises, associating 571 prospective entrepreneurs, which are in the process of being implemented," Gupta said.
Being the nodal agency for the mission, KFC had organized a meeting of heads of banks with finance minister K M Mani on May 31 in Thiruvananthapuram to activate the process of fund disbursement to the new enterprises identified under the KSSEDM. Punjab National Bank has constituted scheme-specific appraisal cells in Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam for the purpose, Gupta said. The Thiruvananthapuram cell has completed the processing of all 22 eligible enterprises in Thiruvananthapuram district and work is on to enable them to draw funds during the first week of this month. In Kollam district, Punjab National Bank has given in-principle clearance to 10 enterprises.
Canara Bank also has sanctioned financial assistance to one of the enterprises under the mission. In one case in Kottayam district, PNB has already disbursed the amount.
Gupta said that applications of nearly 150 enterprises are under process in various districts. KFC is hopeful of sanctioning funds to the maximum number of enterprises at a function to be held in Alappuzha on July 20 in the presence of K M Mani. The registration for the next batch of candidates will start from Friday, July 06. KFC has implemented an automated system, which will enable cyclical repetition of the processes of scrutiny, selection, training and funding every two months.

Reghu July 2nd, 2012, 03:57 AM Union Minister of State for Textiles visits the mill
Measures to revive the National Textile Corporation (NTC)-owned Parvathy Mills in Kollam city got a fresh boost with Union Minister of State for Textiles Panabaka Lakshmi visiting the company on Friday.
After interacting with trade union leaders attached to the company, Ms. Lakshmi said the Union government was prepared to revive Parvathy Mills. “Even funds are not a hurdle to the revival of the company,” she said. At the same time a litigation pending in the High Court pertaining to the modernisation of the company was hampering the programme of the government to revive the company. Once the litigation was over, the company would be revived, she said.
The Union government was committed to reviving all the textile mills managed by the NTC. Measures were also being taken to ensure job security to the workers of these mills. The government would take all possible steps to develop the textile sector of the country, she said.
In fact, the government was willing to spend any amount for the revival of Parvathy Mills. A technical feasibility study would be undertaken for the purpose. The NTC had prepared a standard model for the revival of the mills under its management. She said that steps would be taken to disburse the salary of Parvathy Mills workers promptly every month and the pending salary of the month of May 2012 would be given in a week’s time. She said she was visiting the company at the invitation of N. Peethambara Kurup, MP. Leaders of various trade unions submitted memoranda to the Minister for the early revival of the company.
Wage revision
President of the UTUC-affiliated Quilon District Textile Workers Union N.K. Premachandran brought to the attention of the Minister that the wage revision of other NTC mills should be made applicable to the workers of Parvathy Mills too. He said that the workers were still given wages based on a revision that came into effect 15 years ago.
Ms. Lakshmi said that since there was no production at Parvathy Mills, the issue of wage revision would have to be taken by the Union Cabinet. She said she would bring the issue to the attention of the Cabinet. Casual workers of Parvathy Mills were being paid a wages of only Rs.135 a day.
There were 17 casual workers, Mr. Premachandran said.
President of the CITU-affiliated Parvathy Mills Workers Union N. Padmalochanan said the litigation issue coming in the way of the company’s revival was only a lame excuse given by the Union Minister.
He said the private company that went in litigation had no locus standi in the case because no contract was awarded to that company. The government was not following up the litigation in the desired manner, he alleged.
The Parvathy Mills was closed down on November 26, 2008, for facilitating its modernisation programme. But no modernisation programme had taken place and production had not resumed. Payment of salary too was irregular. The company has 97 permanent staff and six NTC staff apart from the 17 casual workers.

Kerala's high speed rail project to be on track soon
Story
Thiruvananthapuram: Billed as the biggest and most expensive infrastructure projects conceived by Kerala, a high speed rail corridor for India's first bullet train is one of the mega projects the state plans to implement.
On completion, it will enable one travel from Kerala's capital Thiruvananthapuram to the state's northern most point Kasaragod in 142 minutes, covering a distance of 526 km.
The project may sound unbelievable, especially in the case of Kerala lagging in industry and infrastructure development for decades.
Estimated to cost Rs 1,18,000 crore on completion, the first phase is expected to cost Rs 43,000 crore. It will also be showcased in 'Emerging Kerala Global Connect' at Kochi from September 12-14.
"If all preparatory works progress on schedule and the project starts by April 2013 as planned, the first phase is expected to be completed in five years and the second in the following two years. The whole project should be complete by 2020," said T Balakrishnan, CMD, Kerala High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (KHSRCL).
"Work of drawing up the Detailed Project Report is now on. Alignment study/survey has started; preparatory work on land acquisition has also begun. Recruitment of key personnel has begun," Balakrishnan,a former bureaucrat, told PTI.
Nine stations are proposed initially - Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kannur Kasaragod and in the final stretch to Mangalore in Karnataka. Three more at Chengannur, Tirur and Thalassery, would come up at a later stage.
The total corridor length (upto Mangalore) would be around 571 km and it will have two parallel tracks each in standard gauge systems, independent of existing rail network in Kerala.
The government has appointed Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation as the nodal agency for the project, which could transform lives and economy by facilitating hassle free movement between cities and towns in "God's own country."
"A public transport system of this dimension has so many advantages. Most important,it will help reduce traffic density and improve road safety," said KSIDC Managing Director Alkesh Sharma.
"If you look at it as a purely financial project it may not sound viable since the financial rate of return is estimated at around 5.2 per cent. But it becomes viable and massively so, as an economic project.A high speed rail network covering India can boost economic growth rate by upto 1.5 per cent and then there will be incremental growth as distances come down," Balakrishnan said.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has prepared the pre-feasibility study and meeting at the PMO level has given the green signal to all departments concerned. An all-party meeting at the state-level to form a consensus has been very positive.
"We have started discussing funding options with various agencies, including Japan's JICA and ADB. It's in the early stages and nothing has been finalized yet. However, during the Emerging Kerala event, we expect a lot of international companies and financing agencies to take part. The project will be discussed with them and more options may emerge from these discussions," said the KHSRCL CMD.
The DMRC recommended model in the feasibility report is a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) owned by the Central and Kerala governments with Japanese participation. "But a final decision on this has not been taken yet and the government is keeping all options open, including PPP and hybrid models," he said.
On the technology, he said it was not an issue at all as that was already available worldwide.
"If we go by the DMRC recommendation, we can get it from Japan as a whole package, technology, funding, implementation everything. But it is also available elsewhere, in Europe, Korea and even in China, although the Chinese technology has not been fully tested and proven," he said.
About the Karnataka government's response to the project which extends to Mangalore, he said they had welcomed it. "Karnataka actually wants it to be extended to Udupi, thinking it will attract greater traffic from Kerala, especially as a pilgrimage centre," he added.
Reghu July 4th, 2012, 09:57 AM Tourism Minister A.P. Anil Kumar, on Tuesday, dedicated the 10 sculptures, created by as many sculptors, at Asramam Adventure Park in the city. The sculptures were done during a ten-day State-level camp christened ‘Monsoon Sculptures.’
Mr. Anil Kumar said more cooperation from all sections was needed to effectively tap the tourism potential of the Ashtamudi lake.
Steps would be taken to complete the development work on the Asramam Children’s Park at the earliest. The required funds would be allocated.
The renovation of the Asramam Government Guest House would also be completed soon, he said.
P.K. Gurudasan, MLA, presided over the function. N. Peethambara Kurup, MP, delivered the keynote address. Playback singer G. Venugopal and film director Priyanandanan were the guests of honour.
District Collector P.G. Thomas welcomed the gathering and District Tourism Promotion Council Secretary K. Prasad proposed a vote of thanks.

Yes it's a good move. Kallada has been experimenting a lot recently by introducing lot of new service from various towns and cities of Kerala to Bangalore and Chennai.
If the proposed services stick to the timings they promise especially in the return leg from (Bangalore/Chennai to Kollam), it would be value for money....

(http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/National-Highway-Authority)Corporation (KSINC) is likely to start coastal shipping operations in three months. Initially cargo will be brought from Gujarat to Kochi and Kollam using a hired vessel, KSINC chairman K Mohandas told TOI after an interactive session with cargo dealers and other stakeholders here on Tuesday.
The ports in Kochi and Kollam have draft sufficient to operate reasonably large cargo vessels that can bring containers. The infrastructures for handling cargo are also in place. More cargo to other non-major ports in the state will be shifted to coastal ships depending on the feedback from these two ports, Mohandas said.
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/images/pixel.gif
He said one of the major challenges for achieving the objective of shifting cargo from road to coastal shipping was that customers wanted hassle-free end to end transfer of cargo. They can achieve this easily by road, but they find it difficult when the operations shift to ports. These operational issues are being discussed at different levels, he said.
Cochin Port Trust traffic manager C Unnikrishnan Nair said nearly six lakh tonnes of rubber was being transported to other states from Kerala by road. This could be a major return cargo for coastal vessels that bring cargo from other states to Kerala. He said raw fish can be brought from areas like Varaval in Gujarat through coastal shipping for further processing in Kerala.
Chairman and managing director of SKS Logistics, Mumbai Sarvesh K Shahi suggested that many of the bridges over the inland waterways of the state would have to be elevated as per National Highway Authority's suggestions so that vessels can pass through easily. Deputy director of ports department Captain Hari Varier said the state was considering proposals to give subsidies to encourage this cargo shift proposal.
Reghu July 20th, 2012, 12:50 PM Thiruvananthapuram, July 20 (PTI)The work on Kollam- Kottapuram Inland waterways, declared as National Waterway, was progressing and the governmemnt expected to commission the stretch before March 31 next, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy informed the assembly today. Replying to a calling attention of Kunhiramam (CPI-M) seeking steps to expedite the construction activities of the proposed National Waterways in the state, Chandy said hurdles in the construction due to issues related to land acquisation would be sorted out. The main problem with regard to Kovalam-Kollam waterways was the tunnel at Varkalam and issues related to land acquisition, he said. Efforts were on to settle the issues. In the next phase, the Kottapuram (in Thrissur district) to Mangalore stretch would be taken up, he said. Availability of funds was not a problem as it was Centrally sponsored scheme, he said.

Talking after inaugurating the two survey boats for the hydrographic survey wing in Kochi on Saturday, Mr. Babu said that coastal shipping will be launched to shift 20 per cent of the road transport through waterways.
He said that administrative sanction has been given for the allocation of Rs. 443 lakh for a survey in this connection, which will be launched next year.
The Minister said that understanding has been reached with the Fisheries University about the start of the hydrographic institute. Initially, the institute will function out of the land of the University. Those including B.Tech graduates could undergo basic course on hydrography at this institute, he said.
The government aims at the comprehensive development of ports in the State. The concept of coastal shipping is to supplement this. With the Kollam-Kottappuram and Kottappuram-Kasargod becoming a reality, the possibilities offered by sea and backwaters can be better explored.
The survey wing will be strengthened for this.

psanthosh July 27th, 2012, 03:27 AM BCG group to enter Ayurveda treatment, to open new hospitals and university
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM/KOCHI: BCG Health Care group is making a foray into Ayurvedic treatment by investing in clinics, farms for medicinal herbs and education. The group, which has had its share of success with homeopathic clinics - Advanced Research and Training for Health (Arth) - launched four months ago, is adding five more clinics by the month end in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Shornur, Palakkad and Thrissur.
Rekha C Babu, Ceo of the company, said Arth clinics being set up in the hub and spoke model, have registered month-on-month profit. "On per-doctor analysis, there is almost 100 % increase in their revenue. The talent pools from this largely unorganised sector are phenomenal and while its corporatisation may be attributed to the 60%, 70% month-on-month growth. We don't want to get carried away with the initial growth and hope to stabilise at around 30%, the projected market growth in this sector."
Homeopathic sector is expecting a turnover of Rs 4,600 crores and Kerala is expected to contribute Rs 800 crore to this, of which Arth is looking to sit tight on 10% market share by opening 45 clinics by the year end.
The company's venture into Ayurveda is also calculated with BCG group not wanting to market itself as panchakarma centre focusing on youth and rejuvenation but on the four branches of Ayurvedic treatment - Rasayana, Vajeekarana, Salya and Manasikam. BCG group will open 25-30 bed Ayurvedic hospitals in Kochi and Tiruvananthapuram.
As part of its Rasayana treatment, the first Kayakalpa treatment centre Veda Vaidyasala has started functioning at Palarivattom, Kochi. This centre is currently researching the benefits of the treatment.
"The Kayakalpa Kuti will accept only one patient at a time and currently the team is researching the results shown by a patient who had very low sperm count. Kayakalpa treatment has shown tremendous results in his case," she said.
The BCG group will be opening an Ayurvedic college at Wyanad with intake planned for 2013 academic year. They have also bought 10 acres of land at Palakkad to cultivate Navara rice which will be used for consumption at the treatment centre.
