NAME: Durban Ice Rink
LOCATION: North Beach, Durban
STATUS: U/C

USE: Mixed Use (Commerical and Retail)
The renovated complex will house an Olympic Size rink, conferencing facilities and retail boardwalk that connects with the surrounding environment. Construction will take between 18 and 24 months.
There are also plans, from the same developers, to build another rink adjoining the Pavillion in Westville. Both parties are on board and the new Olympic rink there will form part of the futher expansion of the centre and is expected to be complete in 3-5 years, depending on start of construction

jeeze been hearing about this eyesore for nearly 20 years now. Its disgusting and should be completly demolished and the city should facilitate a mixed use by selling off part of the site 9old cinema section) to high rise resi developer to help fund public ice rink

Well if it's done up it'll look really good.. I think they should keep it though, adds a nice touch to the beachfront.

The present building is being basically gutted and they starting almost from scratch.
Once the new one next to the Pavillion is built, which will be twice the size of the existing one, then the north beach site will either remain, or be demolished for hotel dev

i was always told that place was scary hope it wasn't as bad as i thought but i think its a really good development along the beach front offers more entertainment and a place to cool down during the hot summer

A few of us started going to the Ice Rink about once a week since the beginning of this year. There are a few changes happening around the area in a positive way.
Currently there is a new hotel being built on the beach front in walking distance from the Ice Rink. The old Aquarium has been demolished and the Golden Mile is being rebuilt and updated.
Very soon, we will be seeing the Soccer Stadium being rebuilt for the 2010 world cup.
So, I hope to see the Durban Ice Rink being upgraded soon!

I have heard about the rink being fixed up for donkeys . Seems the best thing to do is to drive a D9 through it and start again. Its vile and is very dated and no matter what you do to the facade its had its day in the sun.
BTW any idea what happening around the drive in site?

I really hate to sound negative, but to me, this building is the pinnacle of garish-ness.
I guess I don't really mind the design as much as the colours.

Rosebank Mall (designed by DDG from Baltimore) on steroids!
Are there no original thinkers left in the architectural profession in Durban?
The original structure is a good example of structural expressionism, the large span
suspended roof was and still is a brilliant piece of engineering so why plaster it with
inane marketing billboards shouting DURBAN ICE , nice advert for the nigerian drug lords along the road , come to think of it.

The large letters were to hide the 1960s semi brutalist architecture and the massive cracks and bits of spalling concrete. My opinion is that it should be torn down and start again if they want it there.
I however would advicate demolishing it, freeing up the land of High rise appartment development and then making one of the bigger mixed use projects in Durban( sun coast, gateway precinct etc) incorporate a public icerink as part of their approval process. Think of contribution to the city from a social aspect. Im sure that with the millions Suncoast ARENT going to spend on thier projecvt as per their agreement and licence t, they could incorporate it in the acers of blacktop they have created.
Positive results are money for the city (from land sale), new ice rink (by greedy developers) and some new high rises by another greedy developer.
we will al round

^^ its whoever offers the money to build a new rink. Pavillion need to add to their entertainment mix, so it fits with them. Pavillion are planning it as part of a new retail wing (17 000m2) with a Holiday Inn express hotel too.

its been ages now, what ever happened to any development of the ice rink?
I remember pavillion started construction for a new wing, but all that came out of it was more parking.
When will there be a decent ice rink in durbs?

^^ the ice rink forms part of the nest phase of expansion at the pavillion, which includes a hotel development and further roof retail, plus additional road entrances to the centre. This should start towards the middle/end of this year

^^ the drive in was the proposed site for the Durban bid to be the ICT hub for the world cup. Its city owned land so they have a number of potential plans for it and will have to go back to drawing board now that lost the ICT venue.
Regards ice rink land, yeah high rise seems most likely
