Actually, despite having height restriction all over the city, there is a considerable number of buildings above 100m (not sure how many, but I think that is something around 50 or more buildings). No buildings over 190m thought (only TV towers).

Sao Paulo has many different skylines with some great buildings. Here are just some samples, from different locations:

Seems very ugly, just a sprawl of like-sized, squat buildings with a lot of forgotten space scattered here and there. There are some nice central avenues though.

Doesn't look all that "super-dense" overall with such wide roads and big empty areas and fields. Nothing like Tokyo or HK in that regard. Impressive only in how it seems to never end.

MY GOD! That's amazing. I love it. Who needs enormous buildings when everywhere you walk there is another high-rise. It looks like a sea of concrete...my paradise. I think this more accurately resembles the future of cities...all the buildings are about the same height and hopefully allowing for numerous skywalks.

Maybe Sao Paulo never gets a 300m tall bldg, but we are building taller, in the 90´s and in this new century, Sao Paulo got about 6 or 7 of its new top 10, another 162 m tall office, and two others with 140m in Sao Paulo new office area Berrini.

And BTW São Paulo has about 600 buildings under construction:guns1:

This is one of the cities that I have to visit one day!!!
it's a unique case in the globe, so dense, is a true building jungle. Ok, the buildings don't have 300 or 400 m, but that's not important, and anyway, I think the city will have them in a very near future. I give 8.5 or 9 to the jungle!

One of the five 10/10's that I will vote. Definitely one of my must-sees of the world, I love Sao Paulo has a great skyline which deserves many more taller buildings. Needs a more defined core though (although that would have to be huge) but I just love the density and tallness.

Concrete Jungle is a good description. Parts of it reminds me of a greener Manhattan. So dense. But it is lacking in height and SP needs a couple of really talls to anchor and help locate the downtown for skyline shots. I gave it a 6.5 for the sheer density of the city.

10.0 Density, 6.0 height. Score is 8.0. Surprisingly, Sao Paulo has had tremendous density for almost 30 years, but has not had any skyscraper that stands out from that density. I do like the old Bank of Sao Paulo building, but it doesn;t stand out. You have to hunt for it to find it. But I have been to the city, and the density is amazing,

actually, São Paulo has a great density since the 30 and 40s. You can find some pics of that time in the forum. In that time, São Paulo had a defined skyline, with the Banespa tower and the Martinelli building standing out. But then another buildings about the same height or just a bit lower appeared all over the city... and they disappeared in the mess...

The only standing out skyscrapers I can think of São Paulo are in the CENU area...

I think these pics have not been posted yet

9.5/10!!! The density and pure extent of Sao Paulo's skyline are unbelievable. Up close, many of the buildings are so light, cool, and colorful, matching well the Brazilian climate and lifestyle. It seems like every single block would be a new and interesting world to explore. The only reason I didn't give the skyline a 10/10 is because it needs a few more defining buildings to standout from the rest.

What I don't understand is how poor Sao Paulo's ranking is and the relatively small amount of respect it receives. Sao Paulo deserves way more respect and should be in the top ten, not way down at #130. Boston, Denver, Seattle, and San Francisco all have nice skylines, but they don't come close to Sao Paulo. And having Houston, Tampa,FL, and Louisville, KY, ahead of Sao Paulo? Those skylines are so weak, you'd have to be delusional to rank them higher than Sao Paulo. Perhaps the most perplexing of all was SteelCity32 giving a cursory 5/10 ("nothing impressive") rating for Sao Paulo. Not surprisingly, SteelCity32 ranked his/her home city of Pittsburgh's skyline as a 10/10. Concededly, Pittsburgh has a nice, tight skyline, but that little cluster of buildings is a drop in the bucket in Sao Paulo's mind-numbingly huge skyline.

I've seen Sao Paulo's skyline get so much undeserved criticism about the alleged poor quality of its architecture. If you don't believe me, then here are the words from a few misguided souls:

De Snor - "More variety in architecture would be very welcome here."
ganjavih - "Huge... but loses a bit due to less-than-spectacular architecture."
drah - "Seems very ugly, just a sprawl of like-sized, squat buildings with a lot of forgotten space scattered here and there."
alex3000 - "Most of the buildings are white and short."
Gambini - "...ugly/old/dirty buildings"
brianchee - "its just massive than ny, but the skyline is ugly"

This is pure nonsense. Just look at these photographs taken by Borini at

I saw here some peaple saying that the city doesn't have a beautiful skyline because the city doesn't have the tallest buildings in only one place, or something like that. But i think this a very "american skyline opinion". I like very much the brazilian style of skyline, with an endless sea of buildings, for me is much more interesting than a few one tall buildings in the downtown, or in only one small space, for example. Even though Sao Paulo gets tallest buildings, probably they won't be constructed in only one place. Only because the style that the city was constructed will not make this possible, and because this is not the brazilian style of skyline. :okay:

I give to Sao Paulo 10/10. :)

For some awesome photos of SP's various central business districts, see this thread: http://skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=228994 It's been closed because a Rate the Skyline thread for SP already exists here and there was no proper voting section set up. But it has some fantastic pics, IMHO!

Sao Paulo has an incredible number of skyscrapers. They may not have any supertalls, but they have huge numbers of towers. 9.5/10. Why the height restrictions, though?

There is a point where a skyline becomes too much or too big. This is an example.

Sao Paulo has an incredible number of skyscrapers. They may not have any supertalls, but they have huge numbers of towers. 9.5/10. Why the height restrictions, though?
There are several reasons: blocking immobile speculations, prevent dark apartments due to too much height (since it is possible to build 500m, but the ground would have to be 8 times bigger than that!!!).
Some districts were liberated last year. There are now some tall buildings being projected like two 400m+ towers and other 300m+ and several 200+es. The only problem is the unstable market. It is dangerous to invest in a building with a construction time of 4 years, if you don't if it will be needed when construction ends... That is the reason why many projects rather have 3 30 storey towers the one 90 storey tower. Because if one of the other towers isn't needed, you stop to build the other one and just conclude the the one under contruction...

^ i only agree with u 40%
yes, sure, some pics are really nice and really good quality
but the panos are too small for my liking they should be at least 800 in height instead 293;
and the last 2 nightshots show way too much of the sky...
i prefer to see more of the buildings instead a nightsky, even if it show the stars

so i like the 7th pano most

but oh well, different ppl have different taste :)

I live in SP...was born here and I still live here, it´s an amazing city, but in several parts it could be much better. But I give a 10/10, because it´s my city.

Some people might disagree with me, but I think in therms of Megalopolis, there´s nothing like Sao Paulo in Latin America, not only the city Sao Paulo, but the whole state of Sao Paulo. A recent reasearch reveals that If the State of Sao Paulo was an independent country, it would the 24th richest country in the planet, so you can imagine how rich this state is.

About the architeture, "paulistanos" forgive me but the city could be a lot better. I have some radical ideas, so If I could change some architeture things, I would change a LOOOOT of things.

A monster. A far greater expanse of skyline than that of New York City. More skycrapers in sheer bulk than even Hong Kong. It would be an easy nine if there were *something*-- say a few 300m plus buildings -- to really catch the eye and break the sheer monotony.

The only thing what this fantastic metropool is missing is a few supertalls So you can focus somewhere in this skyline. Every pic looks like a mega jungle of buildings. Actually, despite having height restriction all over the city, there is a considerable number of buildings above 100m (not sure how many, but I think that is something around 50 or more buildings). No buildings over 190m thought (only TV towers).

It have around 50 buildings over 100m, and around 200 buildings just from 90m to 100m.
