View Full Version : SHANGHAI [4] Drinks, Anyone?
hkskyline November 20th, 2005, 07:44 PM This 2-block complex of high-end restaurants, mostly lodged in refurbished traditional Shanghainese stone-frame housing, is the first phase of an urban renewal project covering 52 hectares that resulted in the relocation of 3,500 families. Busloads of domestic Chinese tourists traipse through in the evenings, Western visitors feel like they've never left home, and hip young Shanghainese flood here to enjoy the good life they feel they're due.

Although the redevelopment work is quite nice, I'm not a big fan of these bar districts. This is Shanghai, and these bars make it no different than any other typical Western city. If the world will become so homogeneous then there really isn't an incentive to travel anymore.
zergcerebrates November 21st, 2005, 11:14 AM I think its quite nice, but I believe this is more for the locals though, foreigners arent interested in these since they have it at home. Nevertheless these style are not found in western style countries(as in architecture) the fusion between old Shanghai buildings and western style is quite cool.
Guigui November 30th, 2005, 07:07 PM Xin Tiandi nowadays is more like a tourist place. Japanese tourists go there with the guide book.
hkskyline June 14th, 2006, 06:53 PM This neighborhood doesn't do much to add to Shanghai's character. It could be in any Western city.

I can't agree. I personally find that foreigners are not less attracted to these places than locals. Rather, they always want to go out and have a drink, but local Chinese mostly don't follow this habbit.
I am against these types of developments as well, although it may make foreigners more feel like home. If they come to China, they should adapt to our ways of living.
huaxia-zhonghua June 15th, 2006, 03:39 AM 新天地是上海最搞笑的地方,一排老房子非得搞成什么酒吧一条街,土不土洋不洋。btw还有衡山路
LordChaos80 June 15th, 2006, 09:23 AM I think that's a nice way to keep the old architecture alive and fusion it with the new spirit of the city, what's so unpleasant about it? Shanghai is big enough to offer places for everyone's taste. People who don't like it are not forced to go there. So I don't really see the point about what was said before, especially given the fact that many Shanghai people seem to be more open to foreigners amusement costums than citizens of most other big Chinese cities, aren' they? Shui On Land Group, which was responsible for the development of Shanghai's "Xin Tiandi" area plans the same thing in Yong Qing area of Old Hankou, also calling it "Hankou Tiandi". In this case, it will be interesting how the similar project in Wuhan will be accepted by the Hankou people as they are probably "more Chinese" in some ways and foreign tourists are only few in numbers yet.
YelloPerilo June 15th, 2006, 12:38 PM The drinks are overpriced, the music hidious and the girls cheap. That's my perception of Shanghai Xintiandi. It is a Disneyfied amsusement park for the newly rich and foreigners. But there are also some nice places within the compund as well (e.g. TMSK, Moon Steakhouse).
Phase II and III are underway. I was doing some research on this projects and almost got arrested as I was a witness of a small protest (well, I filmed the protest) of disgrunted residents who were not satisfied with the compensation. :D

With the exception of the music/ girls, isn't that what all touristy, expensive, upscale entertainment districts are?

The whole mix makes up what is upscale, not just the prise.

Yes and everything is pretty upscale... Xintiandi has luxury boutiques, a luxury hotel, expensive restaurants, etc.
If that's not upscale, what is?
hkia June 16th, 2006, 07:30 AM How much are the beers? And how much are the girls? :)
cyberjaya June 16th, 2006, 11:46 AM they are the same price.

You don't have to tell me about Xintiandi. I know the developer and I have friends who have businesses in Xintiandi. :sleepy:

Well aren't you just a whole class above? :sleepy:
Hey, if you know the developer, why don't you pitch a few of those "insightful" comments and ask he/she to do something about it? Also, I think maybe your friends would want to hear your advice.

You know what? The developer, Mr. Vincent Lo, chairman of Shui On (Rui'an) has been complaining that Xintiandi is not making enough money. But on the other hand, he wants to keep it that way and does not want to change the management, who BTW is a German guy, and is a good friend of, you guess it ... Mr. Lo. I just happened to know him and have met him a few times but we are not friends. And it does not help much that I am working for the media, as Mr. Lo dislikes the media. :(

OK. Whatever. I simply don't care.

OK. Whatever. If you work for the media, shouldn't you be writing your complaints in the editorial sections of newspapers or something instead of an internet forum?

Do you know how powerful that Mr. Lo is in China? He is a member of the advisory council of the Chinese government. :sleepy:

So you know powerful people. That doesn't mean you're right in what you said earlier.
