Al Safa project to reflect traditional heritage of Dubai

By Ashfaq Ahmed, Staff Reporter
Dubai: A new housing and recreational project reflecting the Arab architecture with modernity will be built in Al Safa area in Dubai, said a senior civic body official.

The project will cover an area of 100 hectares and provide investment opportunities. It will have water channels and a big lake surrounded by restaurants, office and residential complexes.

“The project, designed to develop a new housing, recreational and work area, is in line with the Municipality’s keenness to support the construction boom in the emirate,” said Qasim Sultan, Director General of Dubai Municipality.

Inspired by the traditional aflaj (water channel) system, the project will reflect the original architectural heritage of Dubai in terms of use of a network of small water canals as a key element to offer an attractive architectural environment.

It will include a recreational commercial axis for pedestrians, called the Pedestrian Promenade, to be constructed along an 800-metre stretch of a water canal. The promenade will serve as centre point of commercial and recreational attraction.

Residents will be able to use boats as a mode of transport and leisure. There will be separate areas for cars and pedestrians.

The Dubai Executive Council has approved the plan to develop Al Safa with the aim of creating an exemplary environment for housing, work, recreation and shopping activities within the same area.

The plan was approved in line with the instructions of General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and UAE Defence Minister, in his capacity as Chairman of the council.

An official at the Municipality said that the work on the infrastructure development of the area, between Al Wasl and Shaikh Zayed Road, would start soon.

“We will construct roads, a canal, a lake and promenade and do landscaping,” he said.

The project will offer a unique opportunity to investors. Tenders will soon be offered to invite investors to build houses, offices, schools, sports complex, hotel, hospital and recreational and shopping facilities. But they have to follow designs given by the Municipality.

For example, the hotel will be ground plus 10 storeys while residential and commercial buildings will be ground plus three storeys.

Thats what you would think, but perhaps they took a leaf out of Emaar's book in terms of creating stagnant lakes. (Looks at the aquatic mutant that just jumped out of the big murky 'Lakes' lake)

You could be right, but do you know exactly where this is? It could either be before Interchange two, in that maassive sand plot right opposite the DNATA and Emirates Holidays buildings, alond Sheikh Zayed Road or on the other massive sand plaot right after interchange 2, opposite the Pepsi Cola factory, again along side SZR, heading towards New Dubai.

What do you think?

am not sure but if they said it will be in Safa, it can neither be where safa park is because the area is called Al Wasl nor near DNATA because it is part of Al Gouz.

my guess would be the other massive sand plot right after interchange 2, opposite the Pepsi Cola factory as u suggested ;)

I meant opposte DNATA and Emirates holidays, on the other side of SZR, but I think it is likely to be on the plot after Interchange 2, opposite the Pepsi Cola factory, on the other side of SZR.

ah....... I would imagine that this has been sealed off for the BB, which will come crashing through this area in the near future.... I am starting to wonder now if this project is going to be connected to the BB in anyway? Perhaps the 800m isnt along SZR, butit could be perpendicular to it, ie, it could stretch from SZR towards Al Wasl Rd.?

What do you think?

was thinking the same, where is it exactly?
could it be the business bay extension near safa park?

I doubt it is directly related to the BB, but I do think that it will be connected to the creek extension in some way. It has to be... where is all that water going to come from?

And it could be on the right side of Safa Park, before Interchange 2 sort of infront of the Gulf News Office.... There is loads of room there. Who knows?

We need Giles to dig up some dirt on this project from his secret source. :D

Traditional buildings for Al Safa

http://www.itp.net/pictures/news/97p6200.gif
The project is inspired by the tradtional water channel system - aflaj - consisting of a network of canals.
Dubai Municipality has launched a new housing and recreational project that combines modern and Arabian architecture styles.

The project, which will be built in the Al Safa area of Dubai, will cover a massive 100 ha. It will include canals, and a lake surrounded by restaurants, offices and residential complexes.

Tenders are about to be released for the development, but contractors will have to follow Municipality designs.

“The project, designed to develop a new housing, recreational and work area, is in line with the Municipality’s keenness to support the construction boom in the emirate,” said Qassim Sultan, director general of Dubai Municipality.

Inspired by the traditional aflaj (water channel) system, the project will reflect the original architectural heritage of Dubai by a network of small water canals.

The Arabian architecture is expected to be well received in Dubai with its predominantly ultra modern buildings.
“The architecture in Dubai has become too modern with absolutely no reflection of our Arab culture in it at all,” said Saif Eddin Khodr of Dubai-based Al Fajer Establishment.
“It would be nice to see some of that culture salvaged.”

The project will include a recreational commercial axis for pedestrians, called the Pedestrian Promenade, to be constructed along an 800-m water canal. The promenade will be the centre point for commercial and recreational activity. Residents will be able to use boats as a mode of transport and leisure. There will be separate areas for cars and pedestrians.

The Dubai Executive Council has approved the plan to develop Al Safa with the aim of creating an exemplary environment for housing, work, recreation and shopping activities within the same area.

An official at the Municipality said that the work on the infrastructure development of the area, between Al Wasl and Sheikh Zayed Road, would start soon. “We will construct roads, a canal, a lake and promenade and do landscaping,” he said.

The cost of the project has not been released.
“We have not reached any estimations as yet,” said Hamid Hattal, planning specialist at the Municipality.
