The assignment of combining two high-rise office towers with a major retail mall in the heart of Shanghai’s old city posed several major challenges. The foremost was to mediate between the scale of Nanjing Xi Lu, a celebrated pedestrian thoroughfare, and the scale of such large structures.

The solution arranges a series of near-primary, derived volumes (lozenge, cone, almond and arc) in the manner of a collage. They are bound together by a five-storey podium, but each one establishes its own entry and formal independence by coming cleanly down to the ground. Each volume is distinguished by a canted sectional lean or cut. The resulting forms convey an architectural exuberance that reflects the vibrant street life of Nanjing Xi Lu.

The overall composition of the project is bound by a larger, circular geometry, as if influenced by the forces of a vortex. The resulting embrace of swirling forms gestures towards the neighboring Stalinist exhibition building and its forecourt park. The upward spiral of building masses is terminated by the translucent lantern of the taller tower. This distinct form will be seen above the city as an icon of the commercial presence of the Hong Kong client whose headquarters will be housed within the complex.

I like almost everything about Plaza 66. I even like the top part alot, however, I think it would be better with more box-shape... (hard to explain). I also don't like that the building is connected to the base. Normally I like buildings to have a shaft that rises from floor one, and to the very top.

Kohn Pederson Fox have that great tendency to alternate with rounded and square forms in the one structure. Chifley Square in Sydney and the IBM Tower in Montreal are indicative of this.

Plaza 66 also follows suit. Medium-tech look to it.

It's a very nice building, but something just doesn't seem quite right about the building. I guess the proportions just don't seem to "fit"... I think the ornamental top would have worked better if it was curved, instead of being angular...

Sorry, this one doesn't do a thing for me. Low marks.

Seeing it in person day by day I have to say that it's on one level with Jin Mao. Absolutely gorgeous. Although I prefer the "front side" as seen in the third picture.

8/10 - nice slender, soaring shape that zooms skyward, and a glass facade that really dances with the light. Maybe it could use some setbacks, though.

Actually, I really love this building. Most everything about it. The base is very cool, as well. The third photograph shows it's skyline profile best, perhaps. 9.

KPF keeps chugging away with great designs!...this is tall,sleek & slim with a nice curving facade to boot...the angular top is interesting but looks a bit too large....overall 8.5/10

Unique...,Very unique. curves in a very wide angle creates a stunning reflection on the large open-green-glass facade. The extended steel-glass structure on the top fit perfectly with the whole scaper makes it looks more creative........9/10

A below average building. I like the glass, the top is ok, the color is ok. Many downsides. Interior "atrium" horrible, the side looks like its going to fall off, does not fit with the city nor its base. Feels discombulated with all the parts around it.

other than that it is an interesting, non-oriental building in a place that needs more pseudo-international styple scrapers

This building truely has to be seen in person, the photos do it no justice, it is perfect for its location and even though I see it day in day out, I still stop to stare at it far too often... lovely

It seems Plaza 66 Tower 2 (http://www.skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=15712) is now underconstruction at 228m and it will be connected to the 288m Plaza 66 Tower 1 via a skybridge. That could really change the asthetics of this building. Tower 2 should actually be called Plaza 45 shouldn't it beacuse it has 45 floors, not 66.

It's an above average design but I don't think the good look will last more than 2 years. They almost always use inferior locally produced glasses and steel, and they are too stingy to spend adequate money on building maintainence.

I think an airline should have had the name rights to this one. The top looks like an airliner tail fin. It also looks like its on fire at night on top. However, it's sleek from the side and looks different from all angles (strange thing to hear from a 'box lover LOL'). 9...
