Allen2 June 24th, 2009, 04:15 PM The first thing I thought about is the opening of the Canada Line in August. I have to say, from a political standpoint, it will yet again benefit the BC Liberals as they have a chance of saying the Canada Line is yet again opening earlier.
This is definitely great news for us....thanks for reminding me :)
Oh yes, the open house for Oakridge-41st station is this Saturday...
Allen2 June 24th, 2009, 04:19 PM Thanks for the pics, Allen!
The Water Front Station looks very impressive!

deasine June 25th, 2009, 03:15 AM Here's some pics of Aberdeen and Lansdowne Stations:
(All pictures in this post are taken by me, today, on June 24th, 2009)
Lansdowne:
I think the two small machines on the far right are validators

Aberdeen:

---------------------
1) If you look closely, for the sign showing terminus stations at Aberdeen, it says, "Waterfront, YVR-Airport" but for Lansdowne, it instead said "Vancouver, YVR-Airport". What's up with the signage inconsistency? Same at Waterfront, the same sign says "Richmond-YVR", as opposed to the supposed "Richmond-Brighouse/YVR".
2) the "Fare Paid Zone" sign at Aberdeen is even smaller than the ones at Lansdowne!!!! WTF????!!!! :hell: Someone better take notice and replace that entire sign (as well as the inconsistent signage as I mentioned for 1) )
BTW: I actually saw FIVE ticketing machines at Richmond-Brighouse Stn, as opposed to FOUR.

josiebug June 25th, 2009, 06:46 PM All the stations look the same and they are all boring.
Plumber73 June 26th, 2009, 05:41 AM ^^Hmmm... yea, transit stations should be for our entertainment. :) What do you want, live music or maybe a movie playing on the screen?
Yellow Fever June 26th, 2009, 06:05 AM They are not as exciting looking as those in HK or Montreal, but thats all we can afford to have for now.
Allen2 June 26th, 2009, 04:45 PM All the stations look the same and they are all boring.
I hate how the Richmond stations are designed in clusters or as "sister stations" ... people like differences and variations. And the signs are just disappointing :ohno:
Why did they put "Waterfront/YVR-Airport" and then at another stations it goes: "vancovuer/YVR-Aiport"
People are going to get confused!

Yes, that's dumb!
Plumber73 June 27th, 2009, 01:26 AM If they don't put anything out on the street indicating a transit station, that would be dumb also. Even if all they do is write the letter M in crayon on a piece of cardboard and duct tape it to a lamp post, at least they made the effort.
deasine June 27th, 2009, 10:00 AM Too lazy to upload, but the "Living Wall" is installed in YVR-Airport STN

raccc June 30th, 2009, 12:17 AM ^ rumours are saying that the earlist would be before BC Day....Aug 3rd.
It won't be until the end of August. There has probably been confusion created by service commencement ( I think that is the term) starting at the beginning of August. Service commencement is actually a two week test period when the system is run at full service levels with no passengers. After that, it will be two weeks before the system is opened to the public.

The Evergreen Line extension is going to start first. let's hope that it uses SkyTrain technology...not a another different metro system.
DKaz June 30th, 2009, 09:25 PM Yeah, Derek Corrigan "I only care about Burnaby and not the good of the region" is gonna throw another hissy fit if the Evergreen Line gets pushed back again, citing that traffic through Burnaby is going to get worse without that extension even though his city already has two lines going through it. Not that I'm against the Evergreen Line at all, I think it should be built first, but Derek Corrigan just infuriates me sometimes.

I am guessing that the station is not going to open with the rest of the line?!
DKaz July 4th, 2009, 12:17 AM Nah, I work in construction, it's amazing how much work they can get done especially under pressure. I worked on GEOX on Robson St near Burrard which used to be a cigar shop, was completely gutted and redone in a month. I know the station is on a larger scale but it's gonna be 3 weeks tops to substantial completion, and another week or two at the most to rectify engineers' field inspection comments.
Plumber73 July 4th, 2009, 01:20 AM Just looks like some finishing needs doing, like tiling and lighting fixtures.

This is especially since InTransit BC gets money for completing it earlier (I believe...). And there isn't a lot of work: just because there is chain link fence and dust everywhere doesn't mean everything is incomplete. If you look beyond the machinery, it's just about done: just some lighting and some cleaning.
mr.x July 5th, 2009, 11:11 PM What's left to do at Olympic Village Station is mainly aesthetics.....lighting, tiling, ceiling treatment, etc. It's nothing substantial like pouring concrete or welding large steel beams to form the station structure. I'm sure they will be able to finish it in less than a month quite easily.
mr.x July 5th, 2009, 11:12 PM I was at the Canada Place/convention centre entrance of Expo SkyTrain's Waterfront Station yesterday and they've replaced the old signage/maps/info next to the ticket vending machines with those we have seen at the Canada Line stations (including the massive map of the region with the Canada Line):

and etc.
Looks like they're gearing up for a BC Day weekend opening. Surely, they couldn't be installing all of this two months before the previously announced September Labour Day opening date. 30 days is much more likely.
There's also quite a bit of new wayfinding signage/paint along the Waterfront Station platform columns, but the Canada Line directions have been left out until for later.

Few problems found so far during trial runs on rapid transit system
Alan Campbell, Richmond News
Published: Friday, July 03, 2009
The Canada Line could be open even earlier than Labour Day.
That's the news filtering through from Canada Line bosses as progress on the rapid transit service's testing continues apace without any glitches.
Earlier this year it became apparent that the Canada Line would be in a position to launch sooner than the original scheduled November opening. But recent intensive testing and trials have gone so well that the Labour Day prediction could be bumped up further to August.
"There's a good chance we'll be open ahead of Labour Day," said Steve Crombie, vice president of public affairs with InTransitBC, which will be responsible for the running of the Canada Line.
"Right now, we're running through some more testing and trials and stress tests. We have to be able to complete a certain percentage of successful runs and simulate system responses. I think about the third week in July we could be ready to set an actual date for opening."
Crombie said the Canada Line has passed every test so far, with finishing touches also being made to the line's stations.
The last big hurdle for the Canada Line is considered to be test runs for the BC Safety Authority, before an operating permit can be issued.
"If we can get through these trial runnings without any problems, then we'll be pretty much good to go," added Crombie.
Canada Line bosses warned earlier this year that a whole rash of headaches and hiccups could still plague any plans to open the Canada Line ahead of schedule.
But the majority of potential problems appears to have been either dealt with quickly or have not transpired at all. Construction of the fully-automated $2-billion line has been ahead of schedule for the last year, and it has been widely anticipated that the new transit system might open early.
A dedicated bus lane on Hwy. 99, north of Westminster Hwy. is being constricted to ease the passage of northbound buses to Canada Line's Bridgeport station.
Almost all Vancouver-bound buses from South Delta, South Surrey and White Rock will be re-routed upon Canada Line's opening to the Bridgeport station.

mr.x July 17th, 2009, 08:18 AM Canada Line could be in service by mid-August
Opening day will be free to public
Updated: Thu Jul. 16 2009 20:43:47
ctvbc.ca
The Canada Line rapid transit system is expected to open earlier than expected, possibly as soon as mid-August. That's nearly four months ahead of schedule.
Expected to cost around $2 billion, it will make Vancouver the first Canadian city to have a rapid transit link between its downtown core and its airport.
The massive project is expected to change the way tens of thousands of commuters get around the Lower Mainland area.
But before it can open, there are still plenty of finishing touches being done at all the stations along the Canada Line route.
"I think people have been seeing the trains run as we've been testing them,'' said Steve Crombie, spokesman for InTransit BC, the company contracted to build and help fund the project.
" I think there has been a lot of curiosity and interest in what is this thing and how does it work."
"We have 19 kilometres of line and 16 stations,'' he said.
Once the system opens, each one-way fare to and from Vancouver International Airport is expected to cost between $5 and $6.
Travelling at speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour, it will take passengers 25 minutes to get from Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver to the airport.
Transportation engineers and planners at the City of Vancouver say the Canada Line is expected to help ease traffic congestion, by getting more commuters out of cars, cutting pollution.
At full capacity, each Canada Line train will hold 400 passengers. (*cough*) They will be running trains every three minutes during peak service. The cars are much wider than SkyTrain, allowing them to accommodate luggage.
Travellers will ride for free on opening day, which could come as early as mid-August.

I don't work in construction, but if I recall correctly, cement doesn't actually "dry", instead the water gets bound up in a chemical reaction. If too much water evaporates instead of reacting, like, for example on a hot day, the resulting cement is faulty (I don't know what the fault is: not as strong, has cracks, something else...). The wet cloths control the drying speed.
I think... maybe... perhaps?

soccer_girl_scores July 26th, 2009, 03:23 AM So I just got back from the tour of Vancouver City Center station and I got some nuggets of information which might be good to share with you as they are now public knowledge.
1) First and foremost, the brochures indicate an August commencement of service. The line is slated to open according to numerous sources on site and assuming all goes well, on Monday Aug. 24.
The reason for this is both Lansdowne and Aberdeen stations have not fully completed paving their sidewalks thus are a safety hazard. It is the hope that the line will be open on Monday Aug. 24
2) The first day will indeed be free, but of course being a Monday, most people will have farecards and transfers anyway, plus a bus ride to the station would cost a fare so it really is not relevant here.
3) The airport fare structure has been placed on hold till 2010. Not sure when in 2010, but there will be no fare structure to YVR this year.
4) The bus routes are slated to take effect Sept. 7, two weeks after the opening of the line. TransLink personel on site said that the B-Line and the suburban buses will run ALONG with the C-Line for two weeks to allow for a "smooth transition"
5) Finally the new tickets seen on this blog with the print on the back, those are TransLink's "second generation" ticket machines hence they are different.
I hope all this clears everything up :)

Thanks for that. The overlap of the bus services is also operational. The next bus sign-up for drivers is Labour Day weekend, so they can't change routes before then.
Hopefully the delay to 2010 will mean the death of the airport add-fare idea. My guess is the Province has pressured Translink to not impose it until after their precious Olympics. We all now know how Campbell likes a harmonised fare structure :)

Canada Line linking Vancouver and Richmond to open Aug. 17
By Kelly Sinoski, Vancouver Sun
August 4, 2009 2:34 PM
METRO VANCOUVER - The new Canada Line linking downtown Vancouver and Richmond will officially open to the public on Monday, Aug. 17, three weeks ahead of Labour Day and three months ahead of schedule.
Commuters can get a free ride on the 19-kilometre rapid transit line, which will run from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. on opening day to accommodate any potential crowds outside the morning rush hour. No bikes or pets allowed on opening day.
The line will open for regular SkyTrain hours the next day, with the first train leaving Waterfront 4:50 a.m., Richmond Brighouse at 5:05 a.m. and the airport at 5:10 a.m.
The journey between Waterfront and Richmond-Brighouse takes about 26 minutes and costs a two-zone fare of $3.75 per single trip. Passengers heading to the airport will pay a surcharge of $2.50, bringing the fare to $6.25 per single trip but their tickets will be good for 90 minutes.
However, the surcharge won’t come into effect for at least the first four months of operation as TransLink has agreed to defer the Canada Line-YVR add fare until 2010.
The $2-billion Canada Line, which is part of the government’s $14-billion investment in public transit, is equivalent to a 10-lane road between Vancouver and Richmond and is expected to take 200,000 one-way trips off the road system. It was originally slated to open in November but the date was then pushed ahead to Labour Day.
It's now opening another three weeks earlier than planned even though work is still continuing on many of the 16 stations. The new line boasts trains that are longer, wider and have more capacity than trains on the existing two SkyTrain lines to accommodate passengers who will be hauling luggage to and from the airport.
The project, overseen by TransLink subsidiary Canada Line Rapid Transit Inc, has had its share of controversy since it was conceived four years ago. At the time, several municipalities opposed the project, saying it wasn't a priority project in Metro Vancouver and raising concerns about the way TransLink was funding future transportation projects.
The project, originally cited to cost $1.5 billion but in the end cost $2 billion, was nearly killed several times but survived.
It then caused a furore when those building it decided to build a cut-and-cover section along Cambie Street, where merchants complained the dug-up construction zone was prohibiting customers from accessing their shops and killing their businesses.
Several merchants moved out. Others, such maternity shop owner Susan Heyes, successfully sued TransLink, InTransitBC and the Canada Line Rapid Transit for causing a nuisance. She was awarded $600,000 in damages earlier this year.
Meanwhile, TransLink expects to have to subsidize the Canada Line for at least four years before ridership is high enough to reach a break-even point.
The cost is a large part of the reason for the financial crunch that has TransLink looking for as much as $450 million a year in additional funding to operate Metro Vancouver's transit system and its major roads. The rapid transit line was built as public-private partnerships, and in agreements with its partners, TransLink took on most of the "ridership risk."
That means TransLink will have to subsidize the until ridership hits forecast levels, which the regional transportation authority acknowledges will take years. The Canada Line isn't expected to see its projected 100,000 riders a day until 2013.

soccer_girl_scores August 7th, 2009, 07:51 PM Jhenifer and the rest of you folks,
On the skyscraper forums I've been reading about numerous people complaining about lack of service along the Granville corridor (express service that is) to cater to the three private schools along that route.
Furthermore, UBC students are also complaining about lack of service and having to make "additional transfers"
I'd like to point out that #480 is still the ONLY bus that will cross the Fraser and take the Granville corridor up to 41st Ave. This transfer can be made by South of Fraser commuters at Bridgeport station where the #480 will service.
All the private school kids can also make the transfer to #480 here as well. The 480 gets off Granville at 41st so one can always transfer to #10 at 41st Avenue for faster service.
I can't believe how many people overlooked the route the 480 takes.
spongeg August 10th, 2009, 11:34 PM in a week most of us will have taken a ride i am guessing?

spongeg August 12th, 2009, 09:38 PM New bike bridge connects Richmond and Vancouver
A new $10-million bike and pedestrian route linking Richmond and Vancouver will open Friday, three days ahead of the grand opening of the Canada Line, Metro Vancouver's new rapid-transit route.
The one-kilometre route hangs beneath the Canada Line's North Arm Bridge, which connects the Bridgeport and Marine Drive stations across the Fraser River south of Vancouver.
Arno Schortinghuis, president of the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition, said he's pleased to see the new bridge will keep cyclists away from traffic and out of the rain.
"It will be a great experience," he said. "There won't be the traffic roaring by. There won't be the fumes. I think it will be an idyllic ride across the river.
"It's partially covered, so if there's wind from the east in the wintertime — and that's the typical direction of the wind — and it rains, you can actually get out of the rain, which is excellent. You're underneath and to one side of the guideway, so the trains will sort of rumble overhead."
For those who want to take their bikes on the train, the Canada Line trains are also designed to be very bicycle friendly, said TransLink spokesman Drew Snider.
"We'll be able to take bicycles on any direction any time of day — a slight deviation from the SkyTrain system, where they're not allowed during the peak periods and the peak direction," said Snider.
Metro Vancouver's newest addition to its rapid transit system, the Canada Line, will officially begin service on Aug. 17, two months earlier than originally scheduled. Passengers will be able to ride for free on the first day.
The new route connects Vancouver and Richmond and includes a stop at the Vancouver airport. It uses similar technology to the two existing SkyTrain routes.

The City of Richmond will be starting construction on better connections soon. On the Vancouver side, it might take a bit longer. There are routes like Heather, Ontario and the Cambie Bike Lanes which are close but right now, one must cycle on Kent a little ways to reach them. On the weekend, Kent is fine but during the week, the traffic is a bit much right now.

Vancouver developers wait for city to act on density issue

While urban planning around the Canada Line in Richmond is largely complete, in Vancouver much of the planning is just getting underway.
Vancouver city officials have begun the process that will result in rezoning for the high-density development that TransLink wants to see along the line.
However, Jane Bird, CEO of Canada Line Rapid Transit Inc. (CLCO), said developers have already offered a positive response to the new piece of transportation infrastructure, particularly with developments at Broadway and Cambie near city hall.
That location has turned into an intensive mixed-use zone with large-format retail stores at the base and live-work condominium residences on top.
The Crossroads development, on the southwest corner, houses a Whole Foods supermarket and a London Drugs beneath office space and several storeys of condominiums.
Across the street and up the block, The Rise includes a Home Depot and a Save on Foods next door to a Best Buy store and a Canadian Tire.
“Clearly, again, this is an opportunity to add density to some [of the development] that we see there already,” Bird said. “The Crossroads development is a good example of a mixed use, dense, esthetically pleasing building near transit.”
Vancouver planning director Brent Toderian said those developments were exciting for the city because they took what has typically been a suburban amenity — low-rise big-box stores — and brought them into an urban setting in a way that isn’t car-dependent.
“I call this area of Broadway and Cambie the first truly urban power centre in North America,” Toderian said.
He said the new development added to what was already B.C.’s second-biggest concentration of urban job space outside of downtown Vancouver.
However, for the rest of the Canada Line corridor within Vancouver, the story remains somewhat of a patchwork with planning underway only for some spots, one of them the 28-acre Oakridge Centre mall site.
Vancouver city council adopted a new policy statement for Oakridge in 2007 that contemplates a considerable increase in residential density, raising it to a maximum potential 1.2 million square feet, from about 150,000 square feet established in a previous policy statement.
Now the city has kicked off an accelerated planning exercise for the remainder of the line, which it hopes to wrap up by the end of next year with a comprehensive policy statement and urban design to guide development along the entire corridor.
“Often you have planning for land use, and you wait with bated breath for the infrastructure to come,” Toderian said. “In this case, we’re fortunate to have the infrastructure about to open, and a great opportunity to to do very progressive land use planning and urban design along that corridor.”
Initially, Toderian said, the city intended to do the planning work station by station, which would have taken up to eight years.
“If we had done it on the six-to-eight year time frame, we would have been significantly far behind,” Toderian said. “But I think we’ve got an opportunity to go from being behind a bit to, compared with other progressive North American cities, being out in front.”
However, the development community, while appreciative of the city’s newly accelerated planning time line, sees some lost opportunities because the planning didn’t begin when the Canada Line was first approved.
“We wish they had done so sooner,” Jeff Fisher, deputy executive director at the Urban Development Institute (UDI) said in an interview. “It is at least going ahead. The key thing is they have to plan those areas.”
The UDI’s advice for Vancouver is to develop as many dense mixed-use communities as it can along the corridor to help maximize the Canada Line’s ridership and increase payback for the overall system.
However, in a city that is starved for development land, a clear policy for density along the Canada Line could have gone a long way toward encouraging developers to begin assembling land, which will be a considerable task in neighbourhoods that are predominantly single-family housing, according to Neil Chrystal, president of Polygon Homes.
Chrystal said that to date, Burnaby and New Westminster have done a better job of accepting and accommodating density around their stations on the SkyTrain system.
He said that might be due to the fact that sites around stations in those communities were more suited to such development.
“My frustration when I look at the City of Vancouver, particularly the Cambie corridor, is that there has been a long time to plan density along this line [yet] everyone’s still talking about it,” Chrystal said, “and there’s no plan in place.”
Chrystal said the development community’s advice has been for the city to take some risks and approve some blanket densities so developers can proceed.
If such decisions had been made sooner, Chrystal said, some development proposals might have already come forward.
Regardless, Metro residents can expect substantial changes in development along the Canada Line, and probably within the next five years, according to Lawrence Frank, the Bombardier chair in sustainable transportation at the University of B.C.’s School for Community and Regional Planning.
Frank, who is studying land uses along the Canada Line with some of his students as part of the city’s planning process, said even Main Street the next major corridor to the west, is being affected by its proximity to the Canada Line.
“I expect to see significant changes,” Frank said, “and not just at the station areas, but all along the length of the corridor.”

Richmond riding TransLink into future
BY DERRICK PENNER, VANCOUVER SUN AUGUST 14, 2009

One of TransLink’s great challenges is to build up ridership on the new Canada Line so it can minimize the subsidies it has to pay the line’s builder and operator.
In this, it has no stauncher ally than the City of Richmond, which is planning to triple the population of its city centre, mainly around Canada Line stations.
“When you get a Canada Line, you don’t [take] a $2-billion gift and do business as usual,” said Terry Crowe, Richmond’s manager of policy planning.
“From Canada Line’s point of view, the name of the game is ridership,” Crowe said in an interview.
Richmond, he said, intends to deliver it.
When the fate of the Canada Line project, then known as the RAV Line — for Richmond-Airport-Vancouver — hung in the balance, Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, TransLink’s chairman at the time, pushed hard for its approval.
Richmond took the opportunity to project its community plan out 100 years and envisioned what the city might look like fully built out.
Crowe said some 40,000 people live in Richmond’s city centre now, in the area where the Canada Line branches off to the airport.
The city wants to accommodate another 80,000 residents, he said, and plans to do so by creating high-density urban villages around its four Canada Line stations where it is appropriate, and flesh out the commercial potential around other stations.
Within 400 metres of every station, Crowe said, the city wants to maximize the height and density of development, including residential, office and retail uses.
The beginnings can already be seen from the windows of Richmond City Hall: Construction cranes toiling away over condominium buildings rising around Brighouse Station.
All five buildings, set on the retail strip of No. 3 Road at Saba, right across from the Richmond Centre Mall, started construction after Canada Line development began.
It is what planners call “transit-oriented development,” nodes of high-density housing alongside offices and shopping centres near parks or public plazas.
You can see existing examples of transit-oriented development along SkyTrain’s Expo and Millennium lines, such as Metrotown and Brentwood Town Centre in Burnaby.
“Brighouse is the most impressive,” said Brian Jackson, director of development-permit applications for Richmond. "There are 600 [apartment] units under construction in five separate projects, all within walking distance [of the station].
“And there are another 1,300 units approved or in the planning process.”
The Canada Line will have 16 stations when it opens, including four in Richmond and three at the airport on Sea Island, with potential for up to four more stations to be built later.
Richmond’s focus is on the three southermost stations. Crowe said residential development will be concentrated around Brighouse and Aberdeen stations initially and eventually the future Capstan Station.
Bridgeport and Lansdowne stations will see more intense concentrations of commercial development, adding to what is already there. Crowe said such uses are necessary to build complete communities in the city’s downtown core.
“Imagine Richmond as a cube, or a box,” Crowe said. “In the box, you put land where you live, work and play, and you do that in a balanced way.”
Within that balance, he added, “you have to put some land aside for jobs and business too.”
Jane Bird, CEO of Canada Line Rapid Transit Inc. (CLCO), said she believes municipalities and the public in general understand that “if you’re going to make an investment of this significance on a corridor,” you have to maximize its potential by putting as many residents as you can in homes close to the infrastructure.
Bird said Richmond has taken a comprehensive view of its planning, with some businesses along the route buying in to the project as well.
CLCO is the TransLink subsidiary overseeing construction of the line and all its facilities.
Bird said Great Canadian Casinos partnered with CLCO to build a 1,200-space parking garage adjacent to its River Rock property on River Road. It will serve as a park-and-ride facility for TransLink during the day, and be open for use by casino patrons at night.
CLCO contributed land it had acquired for the planned park-and-ride, and Great Canadian built it, with a promise that TransLink would be able to use its spaces during the day and would eventually be permitted to build a new hotel on top of the structure.
Aberdeen Centre Mall, on Hazelbridge Way near Cambie Road, Bird said, is another example of early capitalization on the new infrastructure.
Aberdeen’s owners, Fairchild Development Ltd., purchased a piece of property from CLCO that was surplus to its needs for the Aberdeen Station.
Danny Leung, Fairchild’s senior vice-president and general manager, said the company plans to build an extension of the mall that will bridge from its existing location to the station on No. 3 Road.
“Definitely [the Canada Line] is an asset for our development,” Leung said in an interview. He expects it will bring a lot of traffic to the mall that wouldn’t find it convenient otherwise.
Leung said the company has plans for another $100 million in eventual expansion, but will wait until after the 2010 Olympics to decide when to proceed.
“Market conditions keep on changing,” Leung said. “The market seems to be bouncing back from six months ago. I think [Metro] Vancouver is still growing and I think the future will be good.”
However, there are signs of some growing pains.
Ward McAllister, president of the development firm Ledingham McAllister, said Richmond is weighing down development projects with too much of the costs for community amenities that it wants to see built in transit-oriented neighbourhoods.
“Richmond has been too greedy,” McAllister said. “They are imposing so many costs on developers that it makes it impossible to go forward. It’s just not economic.”
McAllister said municipal demands are to blame for a substantial development at the proposed Capstan Way Station being put on hold. One demand was that developers finance construction of the station.
Peter Webb, vice-president of development at Concord Pacific, one of the developers involved on the site, declined to discuss Richmond’s demands, saying the company is still in discussions with the city about its future.

Rotating art will brighten the stations on Canada Line

Canada Line passengers waiting for a train will have something to pique their interest: a series of public art pieces installed at stations along the 19-kilometre line.
The artwork is part of a Canada Line Public Art Program, which aims to engage the public and liven up the stations with “playful” pieces, said Jane Bird, CEO of Canada Line Rapid Transit Inc.
The pieces include a sculpture entitled La Chaise by Seattle artist Marie Khouri, which will likely be installed at Olympic Station.
The bright colourful work by artists Victor Cicansky and Joe Fafard, both of whom are represented by local galleries, and a train design by Yayoi Kusama, one of the Biennale partnerships, will also be featured.
The artwork will be rotated around the rapid transit line and changed over time.
“The theme is they’re all temporary,” Bird said. “This was meant to be a first splash on opening day to get people thinking of art.”
Only the YVR-Airport station will have a permanent fixture: a first nations sculpture by Musqueam artist artist Susan Point. Entitled Cedar Connection, the 10-foot high, 10-foot long and 11-foot wide sculpture made of western red cedar is designed to reflect what the area once looked like.
The sculpture aims to depict the first nations people and their relationship with the great rainforest and the Fraser River.
The main body of the artwork represents an old-growth tree stump, with a flowing water-line motif representing the river. Inside the sculpture is a tufted weaving pattern that represents the tapestry of life.
An owl and a human face within the tree stump relate to the oral tradition within Salish culture. The owl is the keeper of wisdom and a messenger within the story of life, while the human face is a tribute to Musqueam storyteller Dominic Point.
InTransitBC is partnering with the Biennale for the public art project.
It has also asked the City of Vancouver to waive its City Retail Compensation fee, which allows it to lease retail operations in Canada Line stations, in exchange for dedicating the money to the public art program.

I actually haven't seen this anywhere yet... I wonder where it will be placed.
The UBC SkyTrain group has made a rather blunt response about the Canada Line back to Zweisystem of LRT Committee for the Fraser Valley with their recent letter to the editor, posted on their website.

deasine August 15th, 2009, 11:19 AM Anyways, feel free to post the Canada Line photos on this thread. I know many of you guys would take a lot of photos; I, myself, would be one of them, but please select a handful of photos per station. Remember, only 10 photos per post. Aside from just posting photos, we are also interested in impressions and opinions; we are a forum about discussions remember.
This thread will be open until September 7th, when Canada Line bus service is effective. After that, please make all discussions on the Metro Vancouver Transportation Thread.

I was not prepared for riding today, so I didn't bring my camera. All the pictures here are from my phone, which then I realized when I got home that it wasn't set to my usual settings so everything's quite bad quality, not to mention, I didn't have enough battery to take all the photos I would've wanted to take. Nevertheless, I was able to take photos on some stations and areas in stations that no one has been able to see [Notice my "Canada Line fare" above. It lasted longer than regular TransLink fare: two hours! ;)]

We'll start our photo tour from the airport. There were Canada Line attendants all over the airport, directing those who can take the exclusive inaugural tour. They had bright blue shirts on and looked a lot like the MTRC Ambassadors, which is definitely a good thing. Aside from a few girls who were constantly texting instead of holding their signs, everyone was quite professional and friendly.

The ticketing area feels so open and airy. I have to say I was very impressed. Yes, the architecture on the Canada Line is very basic and sterile compared to the Millennium Line, but the atmosphere and environment of the Canada Line stations is so much more open. Like I told you guys earlier, the signage is by YVR at the Airport Stn except for the platform, which is a good thing. What I found weird was the "YVR - Airport Canada Line" station sign was also done by the airport and had incorrect colours (used YVR green instead of the Canada Line blue) and had incorrect font scaling. Sorry I didn't take a photo of it.

The major transportation hub for all suburban express bus services, Bridgeport Stn reminded me like a miniature version of Lougheed Stn. This station is quite wide as well, but not as wide as it could've been. Thankfully, it's a combined service stn.

While Richmond-Brighouse Stn looks a lot like Aberdeen and Lansdowne, it's much larger and airier and will be large enough to handle the passengers from Richmond waiting for the next train to be arriving. This would be my favorite stn in Richmond.

Really, I was trying to take a photo of the TV screen, which was the only screen actually displaying Global News and TransLink information (well... it was disconnected so there wasn't actually any news...), but I caught a photo of the elevator sign instead. InTransitBC/TransLink stuck stickers indicating where the elevator and area of refuge is in relation to the platform, which is excellent. They sure don't look like stickers.
Going to Marine Drive from Bridgeport, it did feel like a roller coaster ride when the train went down below Oak Street Bridge, up again for switch tracks at OMC, down again, and then up again across the North Arm Bridge. Saw two bike riders.

Love the architecture in this station. I think this one would be my favorite underground station in Vancouver. Notice the TVs at Waterfront aren't hung from the ceiling.

deasine August 16th, 2009, 03:11 AM That's all I have today sorry. They are testing announcements today, I randomly heard "outbound platform" really loudly at Bridgeport. No announcements made about next stations on the trains for some reason, but they weren't displaying the final terminus on the LED signs either, so I'm guessing they were turned off for some reason.
The way the platform signs work is that once the train arrives at the station, the time for the train disappears. As soon as the train closes its doors and moves, the platform sign moves everything up. Works quite fast.
vanboy2 August 16th, 2009, 04:19 AM I just paid attention to the map of Canada line, how many stations(STOP) between waterfront and YVR?and is it three zones fair?and how long it takes from wtf to yvr?Thanks.ps.its looks awesome :)
Allen2 August 16th, 2009, 04:30 PM ^ 25 min....still three zones but with a special fare add-on for Sea Island stns (Templeton, Sea Island and YVR) which is an extra $2 and comes in effect in 2010

Backstrom August 17th, 2009, 10:35 AM Question.
How much public opposition was there to the Canada Line?
Second question.
Which street did you rip up for the downtown cut-and-cover?
Timeless Enigma August 17th, 2009, 11:10 AM There was a lot of opposition to the Canada Line, to name a few things:
Of course, merchants and residents who would be affected by construction, and also wanted to preserve Cambie as a heritage street opposed it.
Richmond Council didn't want to have elevated guideways since supposedly it would make No. 3 Road look "ugly."
I'm sure the Tri-Cities residents would have rather had the Evergreen Line built first.
The whole P3 aspect of the project garnered opposition on its own.
The belief that the Canada Line was the Liberal's Olympic pet project.
Cambie Street from 2nd Avenue to 64th Avenue and some downtown parts of Granville Street used cut-and-cover. Originally the Cambie section of the line was supposed to have been built using a tunnel boring machine, but, to cut costs, the cut-and-cover method was used.
Oh, by the way, I love the photos deasine. Can't wait to ride the line on opening day.
deasine August 17th, 2009, 11:33 AM ^ 25 min....still three zones but with a special fare add-on for Sea Island stns (Templeton, Sea Island and YVR) which is an extra $2 and comes in effect in 2010
It's two zones plus the AddFare. YVR isn't considered a three-zone because of the unique AddFare system.
spongeg August 17th, 2009, 11:56 PM apparently the line ups are long downtown
will try it out tomorrow I think
free isn't wortj standing room only or overly obnoxuous people out for a freebie
Timeless Enigma August 18th, 2009, 04:32 AM I was out there today on the Line. Started from Richmnond-Brighouse to Waterfront, then went back to Brighouse. Then we transferred at Bridgeport to go to YVR. The lineups were huge so my group just walked from YVR to Sea Island Centre, which was completely devoid of would-be passengers.
All in all fun day, I'm so glad I decided to line up before 1:00 pm instead of lining up afterward, as the difference in wait times was obvious.
Looking forward to regular service tomorrow and then full service on September 7th.

EastVanMark August 18th, 2009, 09:03 AM The Canada Line was fantastic and brings a whole new level of urban feel to Vancouver. Very New Yorkish except newer and cleaner. The line will also no doubt spur an explosion of development in the Cambie corridor which can only go a long way to make Vancouver that much more lively.
Allen2 August 18th, 2009, 05:24 PM terrible..(the lineups )..I was at Richmond-Brighouse stn and I lined up for 2.5 hrs to get on the train.
I knew I couldn't go anywhere far because I would have to spend the same amount of time catching a train back. Therefore, feeling like the dumbest person in the world, I hop off at Aberdeen stn and made my way back to Richmond centre...
I wonder how many people rode the 99 B line yesterday because they didn't want to catch a train back?
Overall, it was very smooth and quiet and I am looking forward to riding it in the future when it is not so crowded.
spongeg August 18th, 2009, 08:20 PM i'm going to go try it our today - i have a cold so if its crowded... maybe i can pass it on
mr.x August 18th, 2009, 09:08 PM Day Two brings lighter traffic to Canada Line
By Kelly Sinoski, Vancouver Sun
August 18, 2009 12:01 PM
METRO VANCOUVER - Traffic is considerably lighter on the new Canada Line this morning.
TransLink spokesman Drew Snider said he's still waiting for statistics from the morning rush hour but there were far fewer commuters riding the new line between downtown Vancouver and Richmond than on opening day Monday, when 85,000 boardings were recorded.
The drop in passengers is partly because passengers now have to pay the two-zone fare — $3.75 per single trip. Snider said many people are also likely still taking their express buses, including the 98 B-Line between Vancouver and Richmond and those coming from White Rock and Delta.
The 98 B-Line will be cancelled and the other long-haul buses will be rerouted to Bridgeport Station on Sept. 7 as TransLink aims to funnel more people onto the Canada Line.
"We don't expect it to really ramp up until after we get the buses integrated," TransLink spokesman Ken Hardie said.
Some Canada Line passengers are having trouble paying for their fares because of newer technology in the ticket-vending machines.
Snider said the machines do accept debit and credit card transactions, but the upgraded technology requires the credit or debit card to be left in the slot longer.
Passengers must wait until three yellow lights have lit up on the TVM debit slot before taking the card out.
Meanwhile, TransLink is planning to move ahead with a "request for qualifications" this fall for people interested in building turnstiles for the new rapid transit line.
The $100-million project, which would be funded by the provincial and federal governments, are expected to be in place by 2012 along with new Smart Cards.

Franky August 19th, 2009, 12:13 AM Yesterday the trains were packed. I took the ride from Langara Station to Vancouver City Centre Station. I avoided the line-ups by avoiding the terminal stations. The ride (Marine Drive to Waterfront) is definitely not as scenic as the rest of the Skytrain system but the trains are wide and roomy.
mr.x August 19th, 2009, 01:29 AM TUESDAY, AUGUST 18TH (DAY 2) - CANADA LINE RIDERSHIP STATISTICS
- 4:30 am to 9:30 am: 9,000 riders
- as of 2 pm: 33,000 riders
- expected by evening rush hour: 50,000 riders
It looks like the line will have at least 60,000 riders by the time it shuts down at 1 am later tonight.
Day Two brings lighter traffic — and parking issues — to Canada Line
By Kelly Sinoski, Vancouver Sun
August 18, 2009 3:32 PM
METRO VANCOUVER - Some Canada Line commuters in Richmond are finding there’s no such thing as a free park.
At least two vehicles were towed from the Richmond Centre parking lot Tuesday afternoon after security staff saw their drivers exiting the lot and heading to the Richmond-Brighouse station, mall spokeswoman Leslie Matheson said.
Another three vehicles were seen coming into the parking lot and turning around after noticing the tow truck, she said.
On opening day Monday, when more than 85,000 people lined up for hours for a free ride on the train, some 30 warning tickets were also handed out.
“Our parking lot is for the exclusive use of our customers while they’re shopping,” she said.
Shopping centres in both Vancouver and Richmond say they will bolster security to ensure Canada Line customers aren’t using their lots for daily parking.
Canada Line officials have said there is no need — or room — for park-and-ride lots as the stations connect with transit and are mostly in high-density urban areas. As a result there is only one park-and-ride facility, at Bridgeport Station, along the 19-kilometre line stretching from Vancouver to Richmond and the airport.
That lot is owned and operated by the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation, which owns the adjacent River Rock Casino Resort. Parking spaces will be reserved for 1,200 vehicles during the day and 600 vehicles at night at a cost of $2.
Meanwhile, passengers were still flocking to the Canada Line Tuesday albeit at a slower than pace than on opening day when they didn’t have to pay the $3.75 single trip fare. InTransitBC spokesman Steve Crombie said about 9,000 people had boarded the train by 9:30 this morning and the numbers grew to 33,000 just after 2 p.m.
More than 50,000 boardings are expected to be recorded by the evening rush hour.
Crombie said light-beam technology is used to automatically count the number of people coming into the fare-paid zone. TransLink plans to institute fare-gates or turnstiles, along with smart cards, at the Canada Line stations, but not until 2012.
A “request for qualifications” — to see who is qualified to do the project — is expected this fall. The $100-million project, which would be funded by the provincial and federal governments.
Crombie said the two busiest stations Tuesday were Waterfront and the airport, suggesting people were still checking out the new Vancouver-Richmond line.
Some passengers, however, were having trouble paying for their fares because of new technology in the ticket-vending machines.
TransLink spokesman Drew Snider said the machines accept debit and credit card transactions, but the upgraded technology requires the credit or debit card to be left in the slot longer than on SkyTrain ticket machines.
Passengers must wait until three yellow lights have lit up on the TVM debit slot before taking the card out, he said.
Ridership on the Canada Line isn’t expected to increase until Sept. 7 when the transportation authority will cancel some buses or stop them at Bridgeport or Brighouse stations to funnel more people onto the Canada Line.
At that time, the 98 B-Line between Vancouver and Richmond will be cancelled. Long-haul buses from White Rock and Delta will be rerouted to Bridgeport Station rather than going into Vancouver, while local Richmond buses will be stopped at Richmond-Brighouse.

spongeg August 19th, 2009, 04:13 AM i did ride it - it was pretty cool - went to the airport had some starbucks - a good number of people were using it to get to the airport with their luggage
and I am guessing 75% of the people who departed teh train went into the airport just to look around as they had no luggage
coming back a good number of people got on with luggage and seemed happy it was running
around rush hour the trains more so richmond bound were pretty full - the stations were steady but no one really ran as they could see on the signs when the next train was coming so they ahppily stood there
Neda Say August 20th, 2009, 12:21 AM I love it! Can't wait to be back to try it! However I wouldn't have spent 2.5 hours to ride on it!That would make me mad!
Huhu August 20th, 2009, 08:31 AM I rode it today, it was pretty nice, had that "new car" smell lol. Everything was clean and sharp looking. Have to say though, I appreciate the Expo line a little more now; riding underground means there's one less thing to occupy your time during the commute.
Couple of gripes I have:
Lack of signage. Why are there no signs directing people between Granville Station (Expo Line) and Vancouver City Centre Station (Canada Line)? I was at a loss to try and find the way to the Canada line when I got off at Granville Station; as far as the Expo line is concerned, it's like Canada Line doesn't exist. No signs, maps, nothing. The way back was a little better, but I wouldn't blame anyone if they missed the white lettering on white background. :bash: Also there is no signage once you get into the Bay. Several people (myself included) just stood around in befuddlement next to the men's clothing section.
Not enough pay machines. Not to mention both the machines at Aberdeen were BROKEN when I tried to use them. Also Vancouver City Centre Station (which abbreviated sounds annoyingly similar to VCC-Clark), only has 3 pay machines, which meant a looong lineup to try and use them.
I also think the station platforms are too short (I know it has been discussed here already). At least the trains are bigger though, but it makes for cramped boarding as more people try to squeeze through fewer doors.
All in all though, I think it's a good system. It's really convenient to be able to get to Richmond efficiently on transit without having to pray about traffic or heat. When I got on after the morning rush, the train was quite empty. Only a few seniors and family's doing sightseeing. On the way back just before the afternoon rush was slightly better (more people). At about 5:30PM the trains were fuller, standing room only, but still didn't compare to the Expo line train I took home.
Also, I can't wait for a new smart card system to be put in place. It's ridiculous that I have to pay $3.75 for a short 10-15 min ride to Metrotown, but I only pay $2.50 for 4 Expo line stations, 7 Canada Line stations, and 2 bus transfers.
mr.x August 20th, 2009, 03:27 PM ^ lol, both machines are Aberdeen are already broken? I wonder what's wrong with these new tvm models.
Yea, they definitely need more machines at most stations. I saw 12 people line up to use the two tvm's at Yaletown the other day.
There are no signs directing people to the Canada Line from Granville Station because it's not an official transfer point. Waterfront is the official transfer point.
I certainly agree with you with the platform lengths and trains. The smaller platforms also don't allow that many people to queue for a train. And with regards to the doors, I've always thought they should have had made 4-doors on every car....ideally, for that, they would be using exterior sliding doors rather than pocket doors to save room for windows.

Yeah they were busted. There was skytrain staff trying to fix them (I think) and a crowd gathered around waiting for them. In the end, after a few minutes most people just headed up the platform when they heard the train coming.

The platforms are quite tiny, I was really surprised. They will get overcrowded easily and should have been at least twice as long.
Oh well, what's done is done I guess.

dleung August 21st, 2009, 09:43 AM I rode the trains today for the first time. The fluorescent lights make the train look very cold and sterile. Preferred the warm circular pot lights in the M-line. There's also a lot of leg room, so much so that the person in the window seat can get up and leave without affecting the person in the aisle seat. The stations are small, simple, but look pretty high-quality, especially the elevated ones; and are very well staffed. Some guy must have accidentally pushed the distress button because one of the attendants went around the train asking if anything is wrong.

They aren't as bad in person compared to the photos. The issue is that the tubes themselves are quite blue. The new SkyTrain has potlights in addition to white tube lights, which still looks bright.
Lots of leg room = enough room to put luggage in front of your legs. I actually saw a West Jet flight attendant do that... and he isn't small at all.

Nothing is really a permanent solution, is it? Just as expanding highways and bridges. Rebuilding the Canada Line won't ever happen, unless they could figure out a way to keep things running through construction. So with that said, you have to look at serving those that come from the far reaches of the west or east side, all the way over to Cambie to get to downtown or Richmond. One massive line running north-south isn't as favourable as multiple ones serving all parts of the city IMO.

What do you mean multiple north-south lines? Don't the trolly busses on Granville, Main, and Cambie etc. count?
Methinks August 24th, 2009, 10:26 AM I don't see the capacity of the Canada line being a big issue. Since they can lengthen the platforms by 10 metres and lengthen the cars with that third middle car, plus add more trains to increase frequency, they could significantly increase capacity if necessary in the near future.
Given that, doubling the platform length won't be necessary for decades. Being the single biggest infrastructure project in BC history, I think it's reasonable for them to defer the cost of that for a future decade.
Mr.A August 24th, 2009, 11:04 PM I just went to town from KG on the new MKII. While a nice looking train the ride was unbearable. Very noise hum, i belief from AC and a squealing noise, sounds like rubber belt on the door mechanism. Changed at Waterfront to the c-line and what a pleasant ride. went home and phoned translink to complained. It was car 309, very poor quality for a new train!!!
Plumber73 August 25th, 2009, 06:01 AM What do you mean multiple north-south lines? Don't the trolly busses on Granville, Main, and Cambie etc. count?I'm talking about rapid transit - LRT, BRT, ALRT etc. that would serve the same purpose as the Canada Line, but would travel through a different area of the city. I agree, Canada Line expansion and busses should be able to take care of the demand for awhile.
Yellow Fever August 25th, 2009, 08:16 AM Commuters can't buy a ticket to ride Vancouver's new Canada Line
By Kelly Sinoski, Vancouver SunAugust 24, 2009 7:01 PM
VANCOUVER — Charlie Chen tried five times Monday to use his credit card to buy two tickets to ride the new Canada Line from Aberdeen Station to the airport.
But the machine refused to cooperate. It told him his card was invalid. He tried again, pushing the card in and pulling it out quickly. It didn’t work.
He switched to the other ticket vending machine and sought help from a Canada Line attendant, who told him to wait for a click and for an orange light to blink before removing the card.
Still nothing. Eventually Chen slipped in a $5 bill and the machine spat out the tickets.
“I don’t know why it won’t take the credit card,” Chen said.
Neither does TransLink.
The regional transportation authority maintains the high-tech ticket-vending machines are working properly, but are slightly different from those in the Expo and Millennium SkyTrain stations.
This means that instead of slipping a card quickly in and out of the card slot, passengers must wait for the click and an orange light to blink before removing it.
But if the card remains in the slot for too long, the machine will consider the transaction cancelled and send a message that the card is invalid. TransLink spokesman Drew Snider said the machines are “temperamental,” but insisted that they do work.
Tell that to the people at Aberdeen Station, where one woman threw a tantrum after her card wouldn’t work in the machine. Another group of three people struggled for about five minutes before their tickets appeared.
Mahrokh Arefi, of TransLink, conceded the machines are still being tested and perhaps there needs to be more information about how to buy a ticket.
TransLink is working on what kind of instructional messages should be displayed on the machines to make them “more intuitive” to use, Arefi said. The information should be available within a week.
The machines were chosen because they’re compliant with chip-card systems. Similar machines will eventually replace those at the WestCoast Express station. Machines at Expo and Millennium SkyTrain stations are not equipped for chips.
“It’s a new system. With adequate information, it’s not going to be as much of a problem,” Arefi said.
TransLink said there have been fewer complaints so far this week than last week as people start to get the hang of the ticket-vending machines.
But Canada Line attendant Hiro Tsujimoto said some of the machines weren’t working at all for credit cards, while one of the machines at Yaletown wouldn’t give any change. One man received just eight quarters from a $20 bill, he said.
Still, the machines haven’t deterred passengers from using the Canada Line, with 80,000 more boardings on Saturday and 85,000 on Sunday, according to operator ProTrans BC.

I used my credit card to buy 2 tickets, I got the frist one with no problem, but when I tried to purchase the 2nd ticket the machine just kept showing me that my card was invalid. Finally, I used a different credit card and it was ok, what a !@#$%^ piece of crap.
deasine August 26th, 2009, 03:33 AM I'm not so worried about the ticket vending machine problem and not so sure why people are over reacting with it-it's new and almost all of the time, there is a problem with new things. The ticket machines on expo & Millennium Lines had there fair share of issues, just maybe not as big as problematic as the ones now. Either way, those aren't permanent, stationary items that will require lots of money to replace, not that we should be paying for them to be replaced anyway if they can't be fixed.
I would be concerned about our door problems with a few of the trains. When I was at the OMC today, I was in this conference room and the entire time, I was hearing the SkyTrain door closing chime for ten minutes, rather annoying mind you. Overhearing a few people in the control room, which is underwhelming (I would say a third of the size of the SkyTrain control room, maybe less), apparently, there are a few trains still with the door problems. At the train yard, they were opening and closing all the doors of the problem train for another ten minutes and there were technicians, three of which looked like they were from ROTEM Korea. This door problem, I don't think, is a small problem, because Hong Kong's MTR Tung Chung Line, which used trains by ROTEM, pulled trains out of service because of delays and door safety issues. There was a delay this morning (thankfully I wasn't caught in that) and the platform signs were flashing "Trains have been resumed to normal service. We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you," and I have a feeling it had something to do with the doors.
Anyways, as promised:
The problem train I believe (the RiverRock one)

I didn't actually notice this, but the OMC is really in the middle of no-where. Ironically, it's easier to drive to the OMC than to transit. However, the bike bridge was really close and I decided to walk on it on the way home from the OMC.

Yellow Fever August 26th, 2009, 06:08 AM When you don't have cash and the suppose to be reliable machine refuse your credit card and you're getting late for school or work, then it is a problem!
I tried it on the weekend and I like it. The inside of the car is clean ,bright and comfortable, but I don't like the silver/greyish color exterior which make the car looks old and dirty.

Backstrom August 28th, 2009, 05:40 AM Hi everyone. Paid a visit from Seattle yesterday to check out the line and what to congratulate you all on what a fine new line it is. I've talked a little to mr. x about this already, but I too have noticed some issues with the TVMs. I couldn't use a credit card no matter how many times I tried. And my debit card didn't work either.
Anyway, I took the train from Bridgeport to Yaletown, went to Granville Island for a quick visit, back to Yaletown, hopped back aboard and headed to Waterfront to check out Gastown. I love the frequent headways. Trains and stations are nice and sleek. Your ticket validation and fare system is much better than ours, and I like how the fare zone boundary is clearly marked.
Ridership is already very high, and I've noticed how many people are using the lines. Waterfront is a huge transit hub and I'm encouraged by how pedestrian and transit friendly your city is. Are there any plans to terminate the 98 B-line?
The only downsides I observed were short platform and train lengths, which you guys have already discussed. And the lack of handrails inside the Rotem trains. I'm glad to see that there were plenty of employees and attendants along the line. One even asked me to not take pictures.
Overall, I'm impressed and am quite jealous. You guys have a great system.

The B-line has been allowed to coincide with the Canada Line until September 7th to ease the transition period for riders using the B-line. Ridership has dropped drastically, I know somewhere Mr.X said he saw a B-line go by and there were only about 12 people riding it, so it could easily be stopped right now.
Huhu August 29th, 2009, 06:47 AM Does the 98 B-Line still go down No. 3 Road? I couldn't see any when I was there.
mr.x August 29th, 2009, 06:58 AM ^ lol, i wouldn't be surprised if they already started to quietly cut back on the 98's service.

It's a great system and it has been a fantastic ridership success, but it's dangerously shortsighted with regards to capacity.
The TVM's actually do work, the credit/debit does work. But the problem is nobody knows how to use it, it's not user friendly at all. For some reason, you have to put the card in right at the precise moment and take it out right at the precise moment or else it'll reject your payment....apparently, these were safety features but it's absolutely retarded. It also lacks on-screen instructions/indicators for how payment works, but they'll be adding that in soon after all the complaints they had.
I think most Vancouverites are spoiled by high frequency train services....the Canada Line's frequencies are infrequent compared to what we have for the Expo Line.

Taking photos isn't a violation of any of the Transit Safety Rules, not to mention, no one has stopped me taking photos. What a weirdo.
Forgot to post some photos here (that I posted on SSP):
Today was my first experience with King Edward Stn and I think it's the worst underground Stn on the Canada Line, just because the ticket-concourse floors are painted concrete instead of tiles, like most other stns.

See that blank space for overhead signs (on the other side)? They could've used that blank space for another sign indicating trains for YVR-Airport/Richmond. Sigh.

deasine August 30th, 2009, 07:14 AM Jugo Juice looks interesting, it's more than what i had imagined it would be.
The Broadway one is quite large too. It sees like they have seats inside the restaurants, if you can call it that. No wonder why they need to provide washrooms.
And here's Marine Drive Stn with photos of the bus loop and waiting area. I actually think the loop at Marine Drive will work really well, with the one unloading bay, layover area, and loading bay. I wonder why they didn't use a slightly more complicated version for Bridgeport Stn, where there's one large unloading bay, a layover area, and maybe 3 loading bays, Bay 1 for Suburban Express Services, Bay 2 for Local City services, and Bay 3 for community shuttles. I like the idea of having large and less bays for station because it seems safer since there are more people waiting with you, even though they are taking different buses. Enough talking...

Metro Vancouver commuters crowd into a new Canada Line rapid transit train Tuesday morning.Metro Vancouver commuters crowd into a new Canada Line rapid transit train Tuesday morning. (CBC)Metro Vancouver's addition to the SkyTrain rapid-transit system, the Canada Line, got mixed reviews from commuters on the first day after the Labour Day weekend.
Commuters from Richmond and other points south of the Fraser River who were used to riding a single bus into Vancouver were routed to the Canada Line starting Tuesday.
Some were looking forward to the change because the old bus routes didn't work well with their work schedule.
"I have been waiting for a long time for something like this that's clean and green," said one commuter.
Others were less keen. "It used to be one direct bus, but now I have to transfer and stand and take slightly longer," said another.
The Canada Line's Bridgeport station became a busy hub in Richmond.
Morning trains arriving from Richmond were full, some with standing room only. But those who waited a couple of minutes later found the next train from the airport had plenty of room.
A long lineup stretched through a Canada Line station early Tuesday.A long lineup stretched through a Canada Line station early Tuesday. (CBC)Ken Hardie, spokesman for Translink, Metro Vancouver's transportation authority, said commuters should start figuring this out.
"Over the next few days, we can see some strategies developing, especially at Bridgeport, where people will say, 'Ah, this one's a little full, so the next one will be OK," said Hardie.
At one Canada Line station, long lineups were not the fault of full trains, but passengers who stopped at the single entrance to the platform instead of spreading out along the platform to allow people to quickly board the train at its various doors.
Fifteen thousand commuters rode the Canada Line on Tuesday morning, compared with 9,000 for the same 6 to 9 a.m. period last Tuesday.
The Canada Line cost a reported $1.9 billion and took about four years to build.
Yellow Fever September 9th, 2009, 05:54 AM Glad to hear that so many people are using the trains. Hopefully, that number will keep getting bigger as time goes on!
deasine September 10th, 2009, 05:22 AM It's amazing how the Canada Line is now in-service and completed. Because of this, and the recent Sept 7 bus integration to the Canada Line, this thread is now officially closed. Discussions with regards to the Canada Line should happen in the Metro Vancouver Transit Thread.
To help continue with discussions, the most recent "topic" of the Canada Line thread has been copied to the Metro Vancouver Transit Thread. I appreciate your cooperation.
This thread is locked temporarily in the Transportation Subforum, but will be moved soon after to the Archive Subforum. If you guys have any questions, feel free to send me a PM.
