Wow nice pictures! It's amazing how even photos from the 1990's are now totally out of date. My parents brought back a guide book from 1998 Shanghai and it has this wonderful aerial shot of Pudong with only the Pearl TV tower and the NEC building. 7 years later the whole city is almost unrecognizeable. It's like watching one of those cool city transformation slideshows except that the time difference is only 20 years and not 100! :runaway:

One thing I noticed in the 1980s pictures is the lack of cars and all the crappy busses. I once read that in 1985, Beijing had 1500 automobiles.

You've got a point. But look... China's modernizing and Shanghai has been for at least the last 20 years. At one point, those "ugly rises buildings" might have looked modern. I mean look at what modern architecture was like in the 1960's. That looked really bad compared to today but back then, it was modern.

Anyways, not all of Shanghai looks like that. Look at the highrises along the Bund, along Huaihai Road, Nanjing Road, People's Square, and Pudong.

Well, this is what happens when a country advances, just look at Seoul's transformation, it is even more drastic than Shanghai. Seoul was like a 19th century medieval city 50 years ago - it doesn't even have crappy pre-war high-rises that Shanghai has. Tokyo, was like razed to the ground just after WWII.

New Delhi and Bombay had better buildings than all of Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai in the 1950s, untouched by WWII and the Korean War.

Shanghai transform at an alarming rate. Oh my!! My chinese teacher in sch is from Shanghai...and she said she cannot believe what she see when she returns to her hometown...she sayd she cannot recognize the place at all...

Indian cities today look like shanghai in the 1980's. I guess they must still be about 20 years behind. Shanghai meanwhile has made incredible progress
