View Full Version : Streets of Tokyo - Shibuya

Shibuya is one of the 2 most crowded places in Tokyo along with Shinjuku.
It is the favourite shopping spot for the youth: there's a couple of large
department stores (Tokyu and Seibu) as well as a large variety of smaller
stores/shops (Loft, Tokyo Hands, etc) where goods ranging from cosmetics
and house accessories to trendy clothes and halloween costumes can be
found.

Shibuya feels young, full of energy, and is a popular spot to hangout and
meet friends for a chat at the bar or the coffee shop. It is also home of the
Dogenzaka area, which is famous for its love hotel hill and adult shops.

In this thread, I'll cover several spots around the Shibuya station, with
emphasis on the Udagawacho area and the Center street. The pictures were
taken on two separate outings, as the weather conditions will reveal ;).

The underground shopping mall, after coming out of the subway:

Nearby the statue the Professor Ueno's dog:

Christ, imageshack sucks. Everytime I open a new thread full of pics i haven't loaded before, it will half-way load some of them and then stop, and not allow me to right-click and "show picture". Only seems to happen with that particular host...

But nice pics anyway :D

Strange, I didn't encounter this problem.. Does it display all the pics only
when you reload the page?

Urban Japan is great, very vital, changing landscapes, you name it. As a whole, it looks terrible, but once in its urban fabric, always changing with signs, hills, architecture and mixed functions of buildings together.
Those pictures of Shibuya reminds me of a raining day this spring, when I went there, one raindrup appears and masses of people took their umbrella from somewhere (who knows where), a view from starbucks on the 3rd floor gave this special vieuw of thousands of coloured umbrella's moving through eachother.

wonderful! Tokyo is soo cool. I just gotta visit it in the future, especially now when it's not that expensive anymore!

Who says it is not expensive anymore in Tokyo. If it becomes cheaper, instead of 4 times more expensive than what you are used to it becomes 3,5 times more expensive.
It stays an expensive city compared to the rest of the world. But it is worth spending all the money you have. so goodluck in the future when you go visit Tokyo.

^^ Jiyuu-ga-Oka is not that close to Shibya :/ . Nakameguro, sure, but not Jiyuu-ga-Oka, that's another young, popular area worthy of its own thread.

Are there real canals in jiyugaoka? or is that just a pond in front of a restaurant?

Unsing
April 2nd, 2007, 07:51 AM
It's just a tiny pond surrounded by several shops. The lot is much smaller than you may imagine.

Excellent pics! I will have to visit Tokyo some day. The atmosphere seems similar to HK in many ways -- at least just looking at the pictures.

that is the worst starbucks in the world! it's crowded and noisy, and the staff get angry if you take pics of your friends with a cameraphone (but only if you're a foreigner, i've noticed).

Shawn

And actually it's not so big; they just recently expanded the sitting area into Tsutaya a bit, but it's still small compared to, say, the massive Excelsior Cafe near the Metropolitan exit in Ikebukuro. Also, like most places near Hachiko, it's usually too crowded to be worth one's while.

I wish my Starbucks was that big.

What you don't see is that all along that window, the entire Starbucks is only about 2 metres deep. That's only enough to have the counter and seats at the window, plus some room to walk behind.
