This city has a big drug use problem and prostitution in comparison to its local population. It's a huge ghetto.

Bandar Abbas or Bandar-e ‘Abbās (in Persian: بندر عباس; formerly known as Gombroon to English traders and Gamrun to Dutch merchants) is a port city and capital of Hormozgān Province on the southern coast of Iran (Persia), on the Persian Gulf. The city occupies a strategic position on the narrow Straits of Hormuz, and it is the location of the main base of the Iranian Navy. It had an estimated population of 352,173 in 2005.

Ancient history

The earliest record of Bandar Abbas is during the reign of Darius the Great (between 586 and 522 B.C.). Darius's commander, Silacus, embarked from Bandar Abbas to India which is now present Pakistan and the Red Sea

During Alexander's conquest of the Persian Empire, Bandar Abbas was known under the name of Hormirzad.

Modern history

In the 1980s, the name "Gameron" was changed in favor of "Bandar Abbas", following similar movements with Iranian names (see Iran naming dispute).

Bandar Abbas serves as a major shipping point for mostly imports, and has a long history of trade with India. Thousands of tourists visit the city and nearby islands including Qeshm and Hormuz every year

Climate

Bandar Abbas has a hot and humid climate. Maximum temperature in summers can reach up to 49 °C (120 °F) while in winters the minimum temperature drops to about 5 °C (40 °F). The annual rainfall is around 251 mm (1 in) and the relative humidity is 66%.

There seems to be no coordination between the buildings as far as arcitectural style, height or color is concerned. It's a nauseating melting pot of unattractive buildings which together create a very third worldish image. We could do so much better than this. Look at the buildings posted on the forums of other countries and compare to this. It makes me feel ashamed!

The same is happening to cities all around Iran. In the north of Iran, like Namakabrood for instance, they're ruining the beautiful lush nature, uprooting trees in one of the few areas of Iran where we still have woods, and erecting villas and buildings with rooftops of intense hues such as yellow, blue, orange and purple. It looks like a childrens playground. The over-exploitation of the green areas of northern Iran is criminal. It makes me so sad to see this. This is what happens when people with poor taste are in charge and have the freedom to do whatever they please.

Tabriz is another example where ugly unsafe buildings have been erected en masse. These ugly buildings have now totally surrounded the beautiful Shah goli / El goli, and thereby diminishing its beauty.

Yes it is boring for now, it's just a port city. But I believe this place (or at least some parts of it) can be turned to a tourist place like Kish, this will be difficult though, because Bandar Abbas is not a free trade zone .

Yes, the further away you get from the coast you see poorer areas. But I have to say judging from the pictures I've found from the coastline area mostly looks like a nice place.

Bandar Abbas seems to get better and better in this thread lol.... Great pics!

I always thought it must be a fairly cheery place as Bandari music is quite fun, most people say its quite a miserable city though.

^These picture are showing the good part of Bandar Abbas but in reality most of the people are fishermen and poor.

^^ The reality is a mixture of both. The contrast of the pictures of this page and the last say it all.

What kind of people live in Bandar Abbas? i heard most of them are Arabs and no Persians in that area?

^^wtf? who said that??
Sure, there live some arab minorities, but they are 1. as said before a minority (where I have to say that they're IRANIAN-arabs, not to be mixed with the arabs living in arab states) 2. most of the Iranian-arabs live near the borders (to Iraq especially).
I don't have exact data, but I would say more than 50% are Persian.
Bandar Abbas has a lot of problems (drugs, poverty, high unemployment, etc.), but the people are really warm and kind people! You should visit it someday.

i saw an ethnic map of Iran and it showed a lot of arabs in the south
Here it is:

and i saw a video on youtube with some people called bandaris and they looked like black people
i wonder where did they came from? here is the video:

also a lot of arabs are claiming that most people in ahvaz are arabs too? this cant be true since i went there twice when i was younger and dont remember hearing arabic anywhere but on this map it shows Ahvaz as completely Arab.. this cant be right

Any further ethnic discussion will be removed from now on. Try sticking to the topic, this is a photo thread.

^^Okay, but I didn't want to start an etnic discussion here (as I said in my post, that the people (doesn't matter which ethnicy they belong to)are warm and kind people. So, I think there isn't going to start such a discussion, although I know that you're right, since this is a photo thread, but it's not completely off-topic to get to know the people of Bandar Abbas a bit more... .
However, I just answer his/her last post, but I will definately not start an ethnical discussion here. :) I mean I respect and support ALL ethnical minorities in Iran.

I can't say whether they're really arab-Iranians in that video or not, but the darker skin color is also due to the hot weather there.
Whether they're Arab-Iranians, Fars-Iranians, etc. isn't important at all, for me it is important that they are all Iranians and their heart goes for Iran.
As said before, the people are very kind and warm. And all the people I met there spoke Persian, at least I didn't hear arabic at all.
However, since Shapoor has already warned, it's better not to go deep in that issue. :)

Bandaris were originally slaves for rich gulf merchants who may also have dabbled in the slave trade themselves.
The areas highlighted green including Ahvaz are majority ethnically Arab. It doesn't mean they speak the language.

^^ Are they allowed to study their native language in school ? and what is the official language of the Islamic republic ?

Herbicide

^^ Of course! Not because its their traditional language but because its Arabic, the language of the Quran, a major international language and the language of many of their neighbouring countries. Farsi is the official language in Iran but Arabic is probably the most heavily promoted second language. Kurds and other minorities will have problems teaching their own language in schools though.

There were slaves brought to IRan but they are few and now most of the southern Iranians are Persian some arabs but according to CIA arabs iant even barely 4% of the total population of Iran..and not all of them live in south..
so no the great majorty of southern Iran is still Persian and Baluch♥

actuallly i think the seconf most promoted is english and turkish (since its a regional language) and french, although arabic is taught in schools its not what most people realy choose to take, its forced.

and arabic is a really cool language and very live but damn its HARDDDDDD!!!

Yes it is boring for now, it's just a port city. But I believe this place (or at least some parts of it) can be turned to a tourist place like Kish, this will be difficult though, because Bandar Abbas is not a free trade zone .

kish???????? lets make it like izmir not kish! theres nothing special about kish

Excuse me Im not wrong! Yes barely 4% of the entire countries population is arab but in the areas highlighted dark green they are either the majority or the largest minority where there is no majority ethnicity.

actuallly i think the seconf most promoted is english and turkish (since its a regional language) and french, although arabic is taught in schools its not what most people realy choose to take, its forced.

How much more heavily promoted can it be than forced? They dont force you to learn French..
