There are still are long way to go from now til Fall and Dec 2007. In Hong Kong, construction schedules are always delayed by unforeseen weather (usually just heavy rain and possibly some typhoons.) These delays can hold up the project for months, which will be talking about Summer 2008 (hey, why not?? it's Olympic.)
It's smart on the Disney side not to announce the opening time frame so early because they don't know what is ahead of them although the projects are scheduled to complete by the end of this year. So the company can keep its reputation, not to disappoint anyone looking forward to go to Disneyland for those rides.
Can't imagine I was the last one said something in this thread more than a year ago. So by now, are Star Tours and Storybook Canal opened in business?

No. However, IASW is opening at the end of April.
mr.x February 28th, 2008, 04:14 AM what's IASW?
I was in Hong Kong during Christmas....is that the thing that was under construction behind the spinning cups?
raymond_tung88 February 28th, 2008, 04:37 AM Confirmed Future Attractions (from Wikipedia)
On 14 December 2006, the Hongkong International Theme Parks announced [1] three forthcoming attractions for 2007 and 2008.
It's a small world - This update of the classic Disneyland ride will be located in Fantasyland and boast 30 additional characters from Disney films; previously unseen Chinese, Middle Eastern, North American and Hong Kong's scenes and a new optical effect not seen in other versions of the ride.
Mickey's WaterWorks - A summer water-themed parade, due to open in Hong Kong's Summer 2007.
Animation Academy - Where guests will learn how to draw Disney style. Will be located on Main Street, USA.
Pirates of the Carribean - A very classic and popular ride to the Disne parks. This ride will include riding a boat into the deathly tunnels and venturing into the seas. Will be located in Frontierland or possibly Adventureland in 2008.
Star Tours - A star wars simulator ride in where you board a spaceship and travel into the heart of the Empire. Located in Tommorowland in fall 2007.
Storybook canal - based on the ride in California Disneyland, the storybook canal will have you on a boat, on a canal and you will venture into tunnels and see the Disney stories. Located in Fantasyland in Dec 2007.
Frontierland - The fifth place to the park will make it a six-location park like the rest. Frontierland will be like Adventureland except it will be more western and possibly be more bigger.
Mickey's Toontown Fair - Another location to the park themed as Micey's home-town.
Are the info. above reliable???? Is from wikipedia though..?!
If the above information is correct, I'm very happy about it. HK Disneyland needed to include more themed lands and attractions. By doing so, it will be more on par with the other Disney parks in terms of attractions.
Another forumer asked about HK Disneyland compared to Disneyland Paris...
It might be surprising to hear but Disneyland Paris actually has the LARGEST Disneyland Park- even bigger than Orlando's Magic Kingdom. HK Disneyland really can't compare but it does have potential to be more successful than Paris'.
Rachmaninov March 5th, 2008, 03:43 PM So when is it going to be completed and opened...? Still late 2008/early 2009?
hkskyline April 29th, 2008, 08:01 AM HK Disney makes bid to increase visitors
28 April 2008
HONG KONG (AP) - Hong Kong Disneyland has opened the classic boat ride "It's a Small World" in a bid to boost sluggish attendance at the theme park.
The new attraction launched Monday amid lower-than-expected visitor numbers two years after the theme park opened in September 2005.
The ride, which first appeared at the 1964 World Fair in New York, will feature 38 Disney characters and 241 moving and talking figures of children dressed in different national costumes. They sing a theme song in four new languages -- Cantonese, Putonghua, Korean and Tagalog.
Management has been under pressure to improve turnover at the $3.5 billion park, which is majority owned by the Hong Kong government. Local legislators have criticized the park's performance, with one suggesting that Hong Kong pull out of the joint venture with The Walt Disney Co.
The theme park was supposed to be a triumphant showcase of the Disney brand on the doorstep of mainland China. In its first year it attracted 5.2 million visiitors -- 400,000 fewer than projected -- and attendance slumped to about 4 million in the second year.
It faces increased competition from Ocean Park, a local marine-based adventure park. There have also been reports of a possible Disney theme park development in Shanghai.
hkskyline April 29th, 2008, 08:01 AM No snags in talks with city, Disneyland says
28 April 2008
South China Morning Post
The head of Hong Kong Disneyland said there were "no difficulties" in discussions with the government on the theme park's expansion plans.
Dave Vermeulen, the theme park's managing director, said Hong Kong Disneyland and the government were working on a deal that was "in the best interests of the joint venture and the people of Hong Kong".
The government holds a 57 per cent stake in the theme park and the Walt Disney Company owns the rest. The theme park urgently needs to expand to improve attendance and business but must fund new attractions itself. The park previously said it expected its parent company to provide additional funding.
But if the shareholding structure is to be maintained, understood to be the government's wish, more taxpayer funding will be necessary.
Financial Secretary John Tsang Chun-wah, who attended a ceremony to unveil the park's new "it's a small world" ride last night, declined to comment. The ride officially opens today and is the first big addition to the park's attraction list since opening 2 1/2 years ago.
Asked about Disney's plans for the region, specifically Shanghai, Mr Vermeulen reiterated that no agreement had been reached. He declined to comment on reports about discussions for a Disney park in Malaysia, and elsewhere in the region, saying only "we intend to grow over time".
"Our experience in the US clearly demonstrates that two parks are very complementary," Mr Vermeulen said. The US has Disney parks in the states of California and Florida.
The new ride, a standard feature of other Disney parks around the world, is expected to boost attendance and appeal to locals and visitors from Southeast Asia and the mainland, Mr Vermeulen said.
He described the HK$300-million ride as a major expansion of the theme park even though it does not change the park's capacity of 34,000. The park will stay open an extra 90 minutes, until 9pm, to give people more time to try the new ride.
hkskyline May 8th, 2008, 02:43 AM Double-digit percentage gain in Disneyland attendance
Hong Kong Standard
Thursday, May 08, 2008
The Walt Disney Co reported yesterday that Hong Kong Disneyland grew its attendance by a double-digit percentage in the first three months of the year, but the Tourism Commission said it is concerned with the park's performance and operation.
"Attendance trends have been especially good at both our Paris and Hong Kong locations, each of which grew their attendance by double-digit percentages," Disney chief financial officer Tom Staggs said about the company's fiscal second-quarter results, which cover January through March.
In a filing to the US securities regulator, Disney said losses decreased at Hong Kong Disneyland during the quarter. It marked the second consecutive quarter where the park's attendance increased while losses declined.
"The government ... has urged park management to enhance its operational efficiency, revamp its marketing and promotion strategies, as well as strengthen its cooperation with the local travel trade to ensure a continued improvement in its performance," a spokeswoman for the Tourism Commission said. Hong Kong Disneyland is still in discussions with Disney and the SAR government about getting more funding. If no agreement is reached before September 30, the park will have to make alternative arrangements for its funding needs, Disney said.
"If the shareholders do not reach agreement prior to the September 30, 2008 maturity date of the commercial term loan and revolving credit facility, Hong Kong Disneyland would be required to make alternative arrangements to meet its financial and development needs," the entertainment company said.
The Tourism Commission spokeswoman said talks are ongoing.
Metropolitan May 31st, 2008, 09:17 PM Another forumer asked about HK Disneyland compared to Disneyland Paris...
It might be surprising to hear but Disneyland Paris actually has the LARGEST Disneyland Park- even bigger than Orlando's Magic Kingdom. HK Disneyland really can't compare but it does have potential to be more successful than Paris'.And it might also be surprising, but Disneyland Paris is acually very succesful!
Here are the visitors figures I've found for 2007:
Walt Disney World (Orlando) - 16.2 million visitors.
Disneyland (Los Angeles) - 14.7 million visitors.
Disneyland Paris - 14.5 million visitors.
Tokyo Disneyland - 13.9 million visitors.
HK Disneyland - 4 million visitors.
As mentioned earlier, the problem of HK Disneyland is its size (a third smaller than the average), reducing significantly its visitors capacity. That's probably the reason why there's a project in Shanghai.
ddes June 1st, 2008, 08:27 AM I thought Tokyo Disneyland is the single most visited theme park?
If size is the problem, why isn't Disney massively expanding the Hong Kong park?

hkskyline July 30th, 2008, 07:05 AM Disney lands a magic deal
Hong Kong Standard
Wednesday, July 30, 2008
Troubled Disneyland has been thrown a lifeline deal which will allow eight million more mainlanders to visit Hong Kong - but only if they go to the struggling theme park and nowhere else.
The pact - which was announced yesterday as part of a new package under the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement - will grant mainland- authorized Hong Kong travel agents the right to bring tour groups across the border and take them directly to Disney.
After the tourists are finished at the "Magic Kingdom" they will be taken directly back across the border.
Last night the government hailed the "one-stop" deal - which covers an estimated eight million non- Guangdong residents who have worked in Shenzhen for a year or more - and said it would be expanded to other Hong Kong destinations. It did not give a timetable for that to happen.
Hong Kong Disneyland opened in September 2005 after HK$27 billion in taxpayers' money was spent building it.
The Hong Kong government owns a 57 percent stake in the joint venture with Disney. In its first year, 5.2 million people visited the world's smallest Disneyland - 400,000 short of the target.
Since then, park chiefs have refused to make public the number of people going there.
Initially, only state-owned China Travel Service (Hong Kong) can organize the tours, which will begin in September.
A source close to Disneyland said the deal was the brainchild of the Tourism Commission.
A spokesman for the theme park said they were pleased to become the first destination to welcome non- Guangdong residents.
A spokeswoman for Disney's main competitor, Ocean Park, said it hoped to become the next specified destination.
Inbound Travel Association chairman Paul Leung Yiu-lam said it would be unfair if the tours are operated by a sole inbound agency.
But he believes the restrictions will be loosened gradually and more destinations will be added to itineraries if the initial tour is unsatisfactory.
He said one-day tours to Disneyland presently cost about HK$300 to HK$400 but inbound agencies would still like to have a share in this new scheme.
Leung said the industry is hoping the central government will allow Hong Kong travel agencies to establish branches in the mainland to organize outbound trips to Hong Kong and other overseas destination for mainland tourists.
Chinese University assistant professor of hotel and tourism management, Leung Wai-kin, believes the Disney-only arrangement is an interim measure.
He said it would be positive for Hong Kong's economy but on a limited level initially because mainland visitors do not have much to spend.
A government source denied the measures were due to the low attendances.
"We hope to expand more attractions for the mainland group tours," the source said.
Meanwhile, speaking after yesterday's signing ceremony, Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen said the general CEPA framework had attracted more than HK$5 billion of investment into the territory and had created 36,000 jobs in the three years after it came into force in 2003.
The visa on arrival for foreign visitors to stay in the Pearl River Delta region for six days will be expanded to the whole of Guangdong.
Another tourism-related measure allows Hong Kong service providers to set up travel agencies in Guangdong.

Another tourism-related measure allows Hong Kong service providers to set up travel agencies in Guangdong.
hkskyline August 1st, 2008, 05:52 AM Disneyland and HK seek to thrash out refinancing
Hong Kong Standard
Friday, August 01, 2008
The Walt Disney Co and the government are trying to thrash out an agreement on proposals from the entertainment giant to refinance their Hong Kong theme park's HK$2.6 billion in loans.
Disney have offered to replace the Hong Kong operation's commercial- loan facilities "with loans from the company," the company said in a US stock-exchange filing.
Disney controls 43 percent of Hong Kong Disneyland, the rest is held by the government.
"We offered to support the project's short-term needs by assuming outstanding bank debt," said Disney vice president of corporate communications Jonathan Friedland. "We're disappointed that the two shareholders have not reached agreement on the loan issue."
Hong Kong Disneyland has a commercial term loan with a balance of HK$2.3 billion which matures on September 30, according to Disney's stock exchange filing.
The park's revolving credit facility had a balance of about HK$300 million as of June 28. Disney said it also told the government of its willingness to provide "additional investment" to meet the park's longer-term financial and development needs.
Friedland said Disney believes the solution it offered is the best option for sustaining the growth momentum that Hong Kong Disneyland is enjoying.
Losses at Hong Kong Disneyland decreased during the three months ended June 28, 2008, Disney said in the stock exchange filing.
"For the past quarter, Hong Kong Disneyland has continued to record he
althy growth in its business," a spokesman for the park said.
A government spokeswoman said the government has made counter- proposals "for the sustainable development of Hong Kong Disneyland and for the government's interests as a majority shareholder of the park." Officials are currently awaiting a response from Disney, she said.
"The government looks forward to promoting the sustainable, healthy long-term growth of Hong Kong Disneyland, and we are discussing with [Disney] in this light," she said.
hkskyline August 28th, 2008, 08:01 AM Disneyland set for 5.6m attendance
Boost for theme park after second-year loss of HK$1.5b
28 August 2008
South China Morning Post
Hong Kong Disneyland is finally expected to achieve its first-year attendance target of 5.6 million this year, a marked improvement on last year's figure of less than 4.2 million.
Disney has already revealed double-digit percentage growth year on year in the theme park's overall business, including attendance, in the six months to March.
Now sources familiar with the park's operation say that its performance this summer also met targets for its 2007-08 financial year, which ends next month, and that attendance is set to reach 5.6 million.
The sources attributed the rebound to improvements in its marketing strategy on the mainland and to strong economic growth.
The park reported 5.2 million visitors in the first 12 months after it opened in September 2005. Attendance at the Lantau attraction has not yet met forecasts. The park, Disney's newest, will celebrate its third anniversary in two weeks' time under new chief Andrew Kam Min-ho.
The government owns a 57 per cent equity stake in the park joint venture, with Disney holding 43 per cent.
When the Walt Disney Company and the government sealed their deal in 1999 to build the park, the government gave projections for attendance. It forecast 5.21 million visitors in the first year, 5.47 million in the second year and 6.22 million in the third year, which ends next month.
Disney's own target for the first year was 5.6 million.
Confidential documents seen by the South China Morning Post show the park had 4.17 million visitors in its second year - an average of 11,400 a day, or roughly one-third of its 34,000 capacity. Hong Kong was the biggest source of visitors that year, accounting for 31 per cent. About 15 per cent were from other cities in southern China and 25 per cent from elsewhere on the mainland. International visitors made up 29 per cent.
The documents show visitors spent more than HK$2.36 billion on admission, merchandise, food and other items but that the park's costs totalled HK$2.64 billion, meaning a loss of HK$272 million. Including depreciation of HK$775 million and interest expenses of HK$468 million, the park suffered a loss of more than HK$1.5 billion in its second year.
Hong Kong Disneyland is taking steps to ease its financial burden. These include early repayment, by the end of next month, of about HK$2.6 billion in commercial loans. To generate more business, the park needs to quickly add more big attractions. Working plans seen by sources include a Wild West-themed Frontierland with a mountain train ride. One of the working titles for the attraction is "Grizzly Peak".
A park spokesman said: "We do record healthy growth in our business, in particular the MICE [meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions] business, hotel occupancy, food and beverages and sales of our merchandise.
"We do not comment on attendance figures, as they do not reflect the full picture of our business."
An expert on the Walt Disney Company's theme park operations, Dennis Speigel, president of consultancy International Theme Park Services, based in Cincinnati, Ohio, said attendance of 5.6 million in the third year was possible but that attendance of 15 million over three years was below expectations.
A government spokesman said: "We would like to see continuous improvement in the park's attendance and operations. We will continue to urge the management to enhance operating efficiency, revamp marketing strategy and launch more diversified events."

hkskyline September 4th, 2008, 05:35 AM New Hong Kong Disneyland chief expects park to boost attendance
3 September 2008
HONG KONG (AP) - Hong Kong Disneyland's new director said Wednesday he was confident the park would attract significantly more customers in the years ahead after its initial shaky performance.
The park, a joint venture between The Walt Disney Co. and the Hong Kong government, has come under fire after missing attendance targets since opening in September 2005.
Andrew Kam, named last month as the park's managing director, said he expects attendance will "definitely" be greater than previous years as he pushes to expand the company's business.
"I expect myself, working with my team, to aggressively grow this business. Attendance is obviously a very important indicator," Kam told reporters without giving a specific attendance target.
Kam, a former marketing and sales executive at Coca-Cola Co. with 20 years of China experience, indicated the company would look to bring in more visitors from mainland China by working with travel agencies and offering new events and attractions. The company may also add to its work force on the mainland.
"Right now we are merely just scratching the surface of the business in China," Kam said. "That's why I personally I feel very, very confident about the future."
In its first year, Hong Kong Disneyland fell 400,000 short of its attendance target 5.6 million people.
Park officials have been secretive about numbers in the second and third years, but local media reports estimated up to 4.8 million visited the park in its second year. Company officials say the park has seen "steady and healthy" growth.
Kam said Hong Kong Disneyland, criticized in the past for being too small and lacking the high-profile rides, was still in talks with the government on expanding the park but declined to give details.

6 September 2008
Agence France Presse
Hong Kong Disneyland will celebrate its birthday on Friday after three difficult years, as its new managing director juggles a grab for Chinese visitors with a battle over how to fund expansion.
The theme park has struggled to attract enough visitors since it opened to great fanfare in 2005, and has faced criticism it failed to understand both the local and mainland China markets.
But a shift to more Chinese-friendly marketing earlier this year was reinforced by the appointment of managing director Andrew Kam, whose career has been spent selling another US icon, Coca-Cola, to China.
"I have yet to go into the details of the plan we will set for next year, but it will be fairly aggressive in terms of (visitor) growth," Kam told a small group of reporters this week just two days after starting his job.
"We are going to invest more resources in developing these markets ... China is probably the single largest market outside Hong Kong for us -- we are looking for expansion there," he added.
Kam said Disneyland would be employing more staff to market the park on the mainland and build better relationships with travel agents.
He is also hoping the Chinese and Hong Kong governments will agree a special visa scheme for visitors from the southern Chinese province of Guangdong.
But cooperation with the local government, which owns 57 percent of the park, has been strained.
Legislators have criticised the three-billion-US-dollar park for being a bad deal for taxpayers who paid the vast majority of the start-up costs.
And they have balked at further investment when more pressing concerns, such as inflation, are vexing residents.
"Disney has a huge credibility gap in this ... They got too good an original deal," said John Ap, an expert on tourism at Hong Kong's Polytechnic University.
"When things go wrong, it has come back to haunt them," he told AFP.
Kam insists new attractions are necessary, but there is no sign 18 months of funding negotiations will end soon.
"(Both shareholders) have an interest in making this park work and expansion is part of the strategy that will make this park work for Hong Kong," he said.
But the prospect of any new funding is not helped by a string of controversies over the first three years.
A long-running feud with staff unions over working conditions, several food poisoning scares and a mix-up that provoked a near-riot with customers clambering over spiked fences after paying for tickets, forced the park to reshuffle its management team within just a few months of opening.
But the biggest question mark remains attendance figures.
The management has repeatedly refused to confirm figures despite the huge public investment, but a recent newspaper report said visitor numbers were expected to hit 5.6 million in the third year.
This is still well below prior expectations, but would be a jump on the previous year's figure that government documents put at more than four million.
Kam said he did not recognise the latest figure and a spokeswoman would only say there had been "steady" growth.
However, criticism has been muted in recent months, as the management has brought a much-needed focus on attracting Chinese visitors.
It produced a beefed-up Lunar New Year programme -- which it dubbed "The Year of the Mouse" rather than the traditional rat, and launched new advertising campaigns and a Chinese movie "The Secret of the Magic Gourd."
But Kam said the park would remain true to its American roots, while expanding its appeal to Hong Kong and Chinese visitors.
"This is a very American icon ... I won't say we are trying to make this park more Chinese, in fact some of the core values of Disney we actually need to preserve," he said.

Sep 30, 2008
HONG KONG (AFP) — Hong Kong Disneyland has switched its hefty commercial loans to its US parent company, a spokesman said Wednesday, bringing the theme park a step closer to much-needed expansion.
The park, which recently celebrated its third anniversary in the southern Chinese city, has switched 3.3 billion Hong Kong dollars (423 million US) of loans and credit with banks to the Walt Disney Company, the spokesman said.
"Both the government and the Walt Disney Company are very happy we have come to this agreement," the spokesman told AFP.
"We can now focus on the further development of the park and more expansion."
The spokesman would not give the terms of the new deal but said the conditions were more favourable than its previous arrangements. The South China Morning Post said the new lending was just 1.5 percent above interbank rates.
The proposal was first put to the Hong Kong government, which owns 57 percent of the park, in June before being given the green light on Tuesday, the spokesman added.
Reports have said the government and the company have been at odds over the deal, after the park has performed below expectations in terms of visitor numbers.
New Hong Kong Disneyland chief executive Andrew Kam said last month that expanding the park was a priority, as it aims to lure more visitors.
The management has repeatedly refused to confirm visitor figures despite the huge public investment, but a recent newspaper report said numbers would hit 5.6 million in the third year, still well below prior expectations.

hkskyline December 24th, 2008, 10:41 AM Disneyland expansion awaits the go-ahead
Hong Kong Standard
Wednesday, December 17, 2008
The Walt Disney Company will fund the expansion of Hong Kong Disneyland after reaching an agreement with the Hong Kong government on the project, HKDL managing director Andrew Kam Min-ho told the Legislative Council panel on economic development yesterday.
Walt Disney loaned HK$3.26 billion in September to the joint venture operating the theme park to repay commercial loans from 26 banks.
Kam said the move will save Hong Kong Disneyland tens of millions of dollars a year, and that the loan is separated from the money Walt Disney needs to finance the expansion project.
Kam said the firm's expansion plan reflects its confidence in the future of Hong Kong Disneyland despite the gloomy economy.
Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Rita Lau Ng Wai-lan said Hong Kong Disneyland is too small and does not have enough attractions. The theme park needs to expand in order to sustain its long- term development.
Lau said she saw expansion models proposed by Walt Disney during a visit to Los Angeles. She said the government's attitude to the issue is positive and active, but it cannot rush into a hasty decision if the expansion plan involves capital restructuring.
Lau said the government needs to consider factors such as the cost, operational efficiency and other developments in the region.
Kam said that as of last week the park had received more than 150 million visitors since opening in September 2005.
The park will continue to strengthen its partnership with other local attractions including Ngong Ping 360. The number of partner travel agencies has increased 41 percent.
The park announced that it will give 20,000 free tickets to underprivileged families so they can visit the park over Christmas.
Democratic Party lawmaker Fred Li Wah- ming questioned how attendance could reflect the actual income of the park as it sells annual passes and offers free admissions.
Lam said the park keeps records of the breakdown of attendance and insisted that rising income is in line with attendance.
hkskyline December 25th, 2008, 05:43 AM Hong Kong Disneyland aims to expand park by third: report
22 December 2008
Agence France Presse
Hong Kong Disneyland's much-awaited expansion would increase the size of the park by a third and cost around 3.5 billion Hong Kong dollars (450 million US), a report said Tuesday.
The park, desperate to expand its operation to boost disappointing visitor numbers, would aim to open three new themed "lands", the South China Morning Post reported, citing the park chief executive Andrew Lam.
Lam told the paper the expansion would amount around half of the 7.2 billion Hong Kong dollar cost of a new cruise terminal planned in the city.
The park remained in negotiations with the city's government, which owns a 57-percent stake, over the financing for the expansion, the report said.
Bill Ernest, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts president and managing director for Asia, said any potential deal was not straightforward.
"I think the business is complex because any time we go in with our own level of capital, it puts it into the overall mix and then the government has to determine how it wants to handle it," he said, according to the Post.
"So it's not an easy negotiation, but it is ongoing and frankly it has been for a while."
Kam said the government would remain the majority shareholder, but its stake may be diluted if Disney's parent firm paid for all of the new development.
The park celebrated its third anniversary in September, but it has struggled to hit visitor targets and Kam has said expanding the park was a priority.
hkskyline January 2nd, 2009, 11:34 AM Expanding Disney in talks to convert loan
Hong Kong Standard
Wednesday, December 31, 2008
The government may have to forego part of the HK$6.1 billion it loaned to Hong Kong Disneyland as a result of the company's decision to expand the park.
Hong Kong Disneyland managing director Andrew Kam Min-ho said last week the government does not need to inject more money into the project, assuring that it would remain the major shareholder. But a source said Disney is now negotiating with the government to convert part of the loan as its share of capital expenditure.
The Walt Disney Company has said it will inject about HK$3.5 billion to expand the park area by 67 percent.
But the source told The Standard's sister newspaper, Sing Tao Daily, that if the government foregoes part of the loan as shares, it would be in effect financing the expansion.
The source said the government will need to study the proposal very carefully as it involves a change of conditions.
During negotiations for the initial construction of the park, the government and Walt Disney agreed the cost of HK$14.1 billion should be financed by a mixture of debt (HK$8.4 billion) and equity (HK$5.7 billion).
The debt was raised by a commercial loan of HK$2.3 billion and a government loan of HK$6.1 billion payable over 25 years from the park's opening in 2005.
In September, Walt Disney loaned HK$3.26 billion to the joint venture that owns HKDL to repay the commercial loan.
The current round of negotiations between the government and Disney revolves around the HK$6.1 government loan.
Disney and the government respectively invested HK$2.45 billion and HK$3.25 billion into the construction, holding 43 percent and 57 percent of the shares respectively.
Last week, Kam said the Disney expansion plan will only cut a small portion of the government's shares.
He mentioned new rides, including thrilling ones geared toward young adults as well as something uniquely Hong Kong. He said the scale of the expansion project is so great that it would become the "11th major infrastructure" and will create several thousand jobs.
If the proposal is approved, it will only take two to three months for work to begin and about two to three years to complete.
Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Asia president and managing director Bill Ernest also said last week the government and TWDC are negotiating on some complex issues, but he hopes a deal can be reached in the coming year.

hkskyline February 4th, 2009, 11:31 AM HK Disneyland To Hike Tourist Ticket Prices Nearly 20%-Reports
3 February 2009
HONG KONG (Dow Jones)--Walt Disney Co. (DIS) will increase weekday admission prices for tourists at its Hong Kong theme park by nearly 20% starting Monday, various Hong Kong newspapers reported Wednesday, citing the company.
The Standard said an adult tourist will pay HK$350 (US$45.10) for a weekday admission, up from HK$295. A child tourist will pay HK$250 for a ticket, up from HK$210, it said.
The Apple Daily said residents in Hong Kong will enjoy the old pricing on weekdays - HK$295 for adults and HK$210 for children - for at least the next six months.
The Apple Daily cited an unnamed source as saying the park hopes to return to profit by increasing admission fees. The report didn't disclose the losses of the park.
Officials at Walt Disney's Hong Kong office couldn't be immediately reached for comment.
hkskyline February 4th, 2009, 11:37 AM Inject our own magic
31 January 2009
South China Morning Post
Hong Kong Disneyland has apparently fallen short of people's expectations - the three-year-old theme park has drawn just 14.5 million visitors so far and registered a HK$1.6 billion deficit in its first two years of operation. The park has found it difficult to attract large numbers because of its small scale, lack of iconic attractions and the fact that most mainlanders, who account for 30 per cent to 40 per cent of the park's visitors, have not been exposed to the Disney culture since childhood.
The present Hong Kong Disneyland is far from the original idea of how it should be - one that comprises a Disneyland catering to children as well as a Disney World that offers state-of-the-art thrills and adventures for teenagers and adults.
Now that negotiations on the park's expansion plans are under way, the government should insist on the development of a Walt Disney World. Without it, any expansion plan would be pointless.
In April 2008, the Walt Disney Company proposed to the government a five-year expansion plan, including introducing new amusement rides and building new hotels, to increase the park's appeal.
Disney offered to fund the entire expansion by injecting HK$8 billion, but this may mean the loss of the government's majority stake and controlling status. The government has requested a review of the proposal and a clarification of the financing arrangements.
To facilitate negotiations between Disney and Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Rita Lau Ng Wai-lan, the government has decided to create a temporary position under the Tourism Commission.
While I fully support the park's expansion, the government should stand firm and adhere to its principles when negotiating for terms and conditions that are in Hong Kong's best interests. The government, which invested HK$3.25 billion in the theme park, has a 57 per cent stake in it; Disney, which put in HK$2.4 billion, holds a 43 per cent stake. Disney is required to hold a minimum of 1.9 billion shares in the park.
The theme park, however, has been managed by Disney and has yet to accommodate Hong Kong's situation into its management style. For the park to be successful, it is necessary to strengthen Hong Kong's role. This can be done by taking back the management rights and awarding it to local experts.
Disney's business in the United States has been hit hard by the global financial crisis, and it has had to tap into overseas markets to compensate for its big losses at home. The Hong Kong government will thus have more bargaining power in the expansion negotiations.
Claims that Disney will invest 24.4 billion yuan (HK$27.7 billion) in building the world's sixth Disneyland, in Pudong, Shanghai, have not been officially confirmed, so the Hong Kong government should not give in easily to Disney's demands. Moreover, the development of a Disneyland in Shanghai would require State Council approval.
Economic and capital investment considerations aside, the central government is more concerned about the cultural and political influence that the proposed Shanghai theme park would have. If the park does go ahead, Shanghai should learn a lesson from Hong Kong's experience and retain the management rights.
To resolve the issues of Hong Kong Disneyland, its major stakeholder - the Hong Kong government - should establish a theme park authority and inject all its shares into it. Disney's management rights should also be retrieved and handed to Ocean Park, whose outstanding operation and management have been widely recognised.
If possible, the government could merge Hong Kong Disneyland with Ocean Park and list the merged company on the stock exchange in the future. Such a move would not only rid the government of its burden, but also raise funds for the two parks' further expansion, as well as creating opportunities for investors.

Blackraven February 4th, 2009, 06:39 PM It's ironic because personally I've always preferred Hong Kong Disneyland because of its small size (easy to finish and roam the whole facility/area without getting lost or being overwhelmed by anything). That and it makes the area more peaceful (esp. when you go during off-peak season and weekdays with least number of people and stuff) cause after a long trip around the premises, it feels good to take a nap.
In fact, I personally prefer it that way. Given the hustle and bustle of HK city life, HK Disneyland seems more like a place to relax and escape from all the stress and crowds and in fact, you just lay back and chill all the rest of the way
My two cents :)
P.S.
During my last visit, I saw some groups of peeps inside HK Disneyland wearing Naruto costumes. I think I even took a pic of them
hkskyline April 30th, 2009, 05:45 PM HK Fincl Secy To Meet Disney Execs On HK Disneyland Expansion
29 April 2009
HONG KONG (Dow Jones)--Hong Kong Financial Secretary John Tsang plans to meet with executives at Walt Disney Co. (DIS) in Los Angeles Friday to discuss Hong Kong Disneyland's expansion plans, the government said Wednesday.
The planned high-level meeting between the two theme-park shareholders follows Disney's announcement last month that it would put the already-delayed expansion of the Hong Kong park on hold after failing to agree with the city's government on a cash injection.
Disney and the Hong Kong government have been in discussions over financing a second phase of Hong Kong Disneyland, which has been criticized for its small size and lack of major attractions since its 2005 opening.
Hong Kong Disneyland, which is 54%-owned by the government, is the smallest of Disney's theme parks; the company also has parks in the U.S., Japan and France.
At stake in the talks is the government's desire to keep its controlling stake in the theme park, given Disney's willingness to inject capital into the joint venture to fund the expansion.
Citing unnamed sources, the Hong Kong Economic Times reported Thursday that the government is open to reducing its stake in the park in return for Disney funding that would help expedite the expansion program.
The report said a likely option would be that Disney invests HK$7 billion for the expansion, cutting the government's stake to 51%.
Disney said earlier the expansion plans being negotiated involve increasing Disneyland's themed areas by a third of its current size.
EricIsHim May 3rd, 2009, 03:42 PM Progress in Disneyland expansion talks
Talks on Hong Kong Disneyland's expansion have made substantial progress, Financial Secretary John Tsang says.
Mr Tsang was touring the United States West Coast and met Walt Disney Parks & Resorts chairman Jay Rasulo today.
"I am happy to note substantial progress has been made in the negotiations. While a number of issues remain to be sorted out, both sides are committed to bringing the discussions to a successful conclusion in the near future," Mr Tsang said after the meeting.
Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Rita Lau said in Hong Kong she was happy to hear the news.
"As far as I know, there were breakthroughs on a number of important issues. I am sure there will be solid plans very soon," she said.
In Los Angeles, Mr Tsang attended a breakfast roundtable and exchanged views with prominent business people on the global financial crisis and stimulus measures other governments have introduced.
At a business luncheon, he talked about Hong Kong's role as an international financial and trading centre.

hkskyline July 5th, 2009, 08:08 AM Disney to pump $452 mln new funds into HK theme park
HONG KONG, June 30 (Reuters) - Hong Kong said on Tuesday the Walt Disney Co will invest $452 million to expand its Hong Kong theme park, seen as necessary to bolster the park's long-term prospects against a planned rival park in Shanghai.
Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang said Hong Kong would not invest more capital in the joint venture but would convert a substantial part of its loan to the project into equity. He added Disney's capital investment would be about HK$3.5 billion.
Disney will also convert the entire balance of its outstanding HK$2.76 billion loan to the theme park to equity.
"In total this means that the Walt Disney Company will invest about HK$6.2 billion new capital in demonstration of the company's confidence in Hong Kong Disneyland," said Rita Lau, Hong Kong's Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development.
After Disney's new investment and the government's debt to equity swap, Hong Kong will see its stake in the underperforming park fall to 52 percent from 57 percent in the theme park's first major expansion since its opening to great fanfare in 2005.
Since then however, the park's performance has been sluggish, with attendance figures falling short of initial targets.
The government's outstanding loan to the theme park is about HK$6.89 billion. After the conversion, this balance will not drop below HK$1 billion, the government said in a statement.
It said the expansion, with a mix of thrill rides, would "broaden the park's appeal" and act as a "catalyst" in improving the park's operating and financial performance.
"If there is no expansion, the attraction of the theme park will fall over time," government economist Helen Chan said at a briefing to announce details of the long-awaited expansion.
SHANGHAI RIVAL
The Hong Kong government desperately needs the expansion to boost flagging attendance, with a much larger rival Disneyland expected to be built in Shanghai in 2014 that could draw much visitor traffic from the burgeoning mainland China market.
"We're only increasing it (the size) by some 20 percent but the Shanghai Disneyland is going to be ten times the size of Hong Kong Disneyland, how are we going to compete with them," said lawmaker Emily Lau during a briefing on the plan.
But officials, who must still lobby lawmakers to green-light the deal in a legislative session on July 10, stressed the park's unique attractions would bolster the park's current reported attendance of about 4.5 million annually, to between 5.2-8.4 million visitors by 2015 when the expansion is done.
"We often talk about uniqueness and exclusiveness and therefore it's not just about the size," said Hong Kong official Lau.
"We're not competing on the basis of size, we are competing on the basis of these attractions," Lau added.
The park is currently the smallest 'Magic Kingdom' globally.
The expansion, which will cost HK$3.63 billion, will include 30 new attractions and three new theme areas -- two unique to any Disneyland -- and will see the total area of Hong Kong Disneyland increase by 23 percent over five years.
The total net economic benefit of the expanded theme park over 40 years would range from HK$64.7 billion to HK$117.3 billion, the government said, with the theme park having already added 0.2 percent to the city's annual GDP since opening.
Hong Kong's Financial Secretary John Tsang travelled to Los Angeles in May, where he met senior Disney executives. The trip is seen to have paved the way for the breakthrough after Disney earlier said it would stall any expansion amid the credit crunch.
As part of the deal, Disney promised to boost transparency by disclosing its annual visitor figures and financial performance.
hkskyline July 5th, 2009, 08:25 AM Details on Disney or no deal, say legislators
5 July 2009
South China Morning Post
The government has urged legislators to fast track approval of Hong Kong Disneyland's expansion plan because of the global economic crisis.
But lawmakers say they cannot support the deal without details of the park's performance.
Secretary of Commerce and Economic Development Rita Lau Ng Wai-lan warned lawmakers at a panel meeting yesterday that the economic climate could threaten the plan.
"We want to grab time to confirm it, and then realise the deal," Mrs Lau said.
But legislators continued to criticise the government for disclosing too little information about the park's financial situation. Some said the Finance Committee should postpone discussing the matter at its meeting on Friday so the government could provide more data.
"You [the government] can't tell when the park will generate profit. You also can't tell when it will offer [to pay] interest," the Democratic Party's Emily Lau Wai-hing said.
Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong legislator Starry Lee Wai-king also said it was "disappointing and frustrating" that the information provided to the council was so limited.
Democrat Fred Li Wah-ming asked whether the government had considered instead selling its stake in the theme park because of its poor performance.
But Rita Lau questioned the possibility of finding investors considering the joint venture's financial situation.
"Although the operation of the company was not ideal in the last three years, the park has generated {hellip} HK$10.3 billion in actual economic benefit, so again we hope lawmakers see this project as one to promote Hong Kong's economy," she said.
On Tuesday, the government revealed the long-awaited expansion plan. It will cost HK$3.63 billion, towards which Disney will contribute HK$3.5 billion.
More than 30 new rides will be added by 2014.
To maintain its majority stake, the government will convert some HK$5.9 billion of existing debt to equity; its new shareholding will be about 52 per cent.
Disney's stake will rise to about 48 per cent.

Seems like there is a Mickey Mouse in the center, but too bad the Google's aerial is a little old to show the built images. Curious how does it look like on the ground.

Kaitak747 November 6th, 2009, 06:58 AM Race against time for Disneyland
Nickkita Lau
Friday, November 06, 2009
Hong Kong Disneyland must win its race against time and complete its expansion before the company's Shanghai attraction opens in 2014.
That was the message from Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Rita Lau Ng Wai-lan yesterday as the Lantau Island attraction ruled out cheaper admission fees to attract more visitors.
Elsewhere, Hong Kong Tourism Board chairman James Tien Pei-chun admitted that competition from the Shanghai theme park will hurt visitor numbers to Hong Kong, although just by how much is anyone's guess.
Tien told RTHK that of the 1.6 million mainlanders visiting Disneyland each year, half of them come from Guangdong.
He believes the territory will retain this core group of visitors, but fears losing those who come here from further afield.
Tien said the HK$3.6 billion Disneyland expansion, which is set to begin by the end of the year and be completed the same year the Shanghai park is due to open, should help attract visitors.
Disneyland marketing director Frederick Chan Kwok-yu said local, overseas and mainland visitors each account for one-third of patrons.
Chan said the theme park will continue to explore the Asia-Pacific market and come up with tailor-made programs that cater for specific tastes. Meanwhile, there will be the added competition of Universal Studios Singapore, which is due to open next year.
"Tourist attractions open in different parts of the world every year. We don't think there is one that can attract all the visitors," Chan said.
He insists the China market is big enough for two parks from the international entertainment giant.
Each Disney park will aim to provide spinoff benefits to the other.
Chan said, as a result, Disneyland is not considering a reduction in admission fees.
Expansion plans are on course, and he is upbeat that special events designed for the different holiday seasons will boost the appeal of the Lantau attraction.
The upcoming 45-day festive special, A Sparkling Christmas - A Winter Wonderland, which runs from November 20 to January 3, will be of particular appeal to visitors from southern China and Southeast Asia because they rarely see snow and have little experience of the Western holiday tradition.
However, Chan said the appeal of the Christmas special is not limited to foreign visitors, as local attendance for last year's event jumped 17 percent.

http://orientaldaily.on.cc/cnt/news/20091108/photo/1108-00176-031b1.jpg

Government Press Release
Following is the transcript (English portion) of remarks by the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mrs Rita Lau, to the media before the meeting of the Legislative Council Panel on Commerce and Industry this afternoon (January 19):
Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development: This report of the financial performance is published in accordance with the agreement reached between The Walt Disney Company and the Hong Kong Government as part of the expansion plan. We note obviously as a shareholder the performance as delivered by the theme park company is certainly falling short of our general expectation. I wish to point out, however, that the theme park is a long-term investment, which forms part of the tourism infrastructure of Hong Kong. In expressing our concern on the performance of the theme park, we also wish to point out that since its opening in 2005, it has received over 19 million visitors and has contributed quite significantly to the Hong Kong economy.
Nevertheless, we remain concerned and we will continue to monitor the performance and operation of the theme park. And it is very important for the management to control costs to improve the company's efficiency and operation with a view to boosting its performance.
Next week, we will have the opportunity to brief members of the Legislative Council (Economic Development) Panel, and we certainly hope that the company management will be able to share with members its business plan for the coming year and its promotional strategy with a view to boosting the park's performance, as well as its general business.

http://news.mingpao.com/20101113/gw__13gx601.jpg

Hong Kong Disneyland and Ngong Ping 360 have launched a joint promotion to lure more local visitors.
A combination HK$365 ticket will enable holders to visit the two attractions on Lantau Island under the "Journey in the Air" promotion from Friday to May 22.
"We believe that the promotion can draw more visitors to the island and broaden the visitor base," said Disneyland Resort managing director Andrew Kam Min-ho.
Kam said after riding the cable car in the morning, visitors may tour Disneyland in the afternoon and enjoy fireworks at night.
An adult ticket to Disneyland regularly costs HK$350, while a round-trip ticket on Ngong Ping cable car is HK$115. Joint tickets for children and the elderly are HK$258 and HK$211.
A "Lantau Disney Hotel Package" is also being offered, comprising two nights of hotel accommodation, two Disneyland park tickets and a heritage tour of Lantau that includes visits to Tai O and the Giant Buddha.

EricIsHim April 7th, 2011, 09:23 PM Hong Kong Disneyland expansion ready by 2013
(AFP) – 12 hours ago
HONG KONG — Hong Kong Disneyland, which has been struggling to attract visitors since opening in 2005, said Thursday it would complete the first phase of its expansion by 2013, a year early.
The loss-making park has been seeking to increase its popularity and faces fresh concerns over its future with Shanghai Disneyland reportedly set to start construction on Friday.
The HK$3.63 billion ($467 million) expansion, which will see the addition of three attractions, will now be completed by 2013, the theme park said in a statement received by AFP Thursday.
It said Toy Story Land, based on the popular animated film, would open later this year while two other attractions would open in 2012 and 2013.
The Hong Kong Economic Times reported Thursday that the company had also started preliminary discussions with the government on the next round of expansion, which could start in 2013.
However a park spokesman dismissed the report when contacted by AFP.
Since it opened in 2005, Hong Kong Disneyland, which is majority owned by the Hong Kong government, has been desperate to boost the number and quality of its attractions as it struggles to attract visitors.
The venue is investing HK$6.2 billion to build 30 new attractions over the next five years.
Early completion of the first phase of expansion will give it more time to prepare for competition from the long-awaited Shanghai Disneyland, which will cost $3.7 billion and cover a site of 963 acres (390 hectares).
The whole Hong Kong Disneyland resort site, including two hotels, covers 310 acres.
Mainland China is a major source of visitors for the Hong Kong park, last year accounting for 2.2 million visitors, or 42 percent of the total, according to the latest park figures.

lkiller123 April 7th, 2011, 10:18 PM I'm not sure if the new section will work. The Shanghai Disneyland might be ready by 2014/15, and it will sure be drawing some visitors away from the HK Disneyland. Ocean Park is still topping the Disneyland in terms of visitors. To me, the expansion might be a waste of money.
aab7772003 April 7th, 2011, 11:40 PM Focus on what Singapore is doing instead of fretting over how Shanghai will siphon off Hong Kong´s share of whatever. Do you own thing because Shanghai will go ahead with whatever it has in mind anyway.
EricIsHim April 8th, 2011, 03:36 PM I'm not sure if the new section will work. To me, the expansion might be a waste of money.
It's rather another chicken and egg question.
The park started off with a size that too small to attract visitor, so it can't make money; then do you spend the extra to make it bigger? Or would you wait until it has some growth before the expansion?
To me, we need extra attractions in the park to draw more people to visit.
Doing little now, is better than nothing.
China is certainly big enough to hold two or even three Disney, I ain't worry about that Shanghai is getting one. I would be more concern about how Singapore is drawing some potential SE Asia visitors to its Universal Studio rather.
hkskyline April 8th, 2011, 05:12 PM So has Tokyo Disneyland suffered with the opening of Hong Kong's park? Disney is not stupid. They're not going to abandon their park in HK once Shanghai opens. After all, they did put up good money into both.
Expanding the HK park is crucial as it is too small now to be a major draw. It's a golden opportunity to grow both leisure, family, and convention tourism. But it seems their strategy is way too conservative to-date.

Admission fees to Hong Kong Disneyland are expected to rise by 10 percent from August 1, with a formal announcement expected as early as today.
A source said the new prices will first apply to non-locals buying tickets on the spot. SAR residents will be spared until the end of this year. Group tickets booked by tour operators will also not be affected immediately.
One-day tickets for adults will rise from HK$350 to a level slightly below HK$400.
The park last increased the prices of annual passes by up to 40 percent in March.
The source said despite price increases for some types of tickets, the park will be offering sweeteners though details have not been released.
The theme park, the source said, has long maintained contact with stakeholders including tour agencies, which found the increase "acceptable."
A Disneyland spokesman said yesterday he had no news on the price hike plan.
The park's net loss fell 45 percent to HK$718 million for the year to October 2. It was HK$1.31 billion in 2009 and HK$1.57 billion in 2008.
It will add three themed areas by mid-2014, enlarging the size of the park by about 23 percent. Toy Story Land, the first, is slated to open year-end. The others are Grizzly Gulch and Mystic Point.

Hong Kong Disneyland is recruiting 1,000 staff for its biggest expansion since it opened in 2005, and this includes Asia's first Toy Story Land, which is scheduled to open in November.
"In addition to increasing our physical footprint by 23 percent, the new projects will increase overall park attractions, entertainment facilities and shows to more than 100," park managing director Andrew Kam Min-ho said.
With the new attraction, daily visitor arrivals are expected to rise from 38,000 to 40,000.
Visitors to Toy Story Land will feel dwarfed by the oversized characters of Slinky Dog, Toy Soldier Parachute Drop and RC Racer - characters from the movie Toy Story.
Kam said the whole expansion includes the development of three new theme areas and costs are within estimates. He declined to say how much but earlier reports put the figure at HK$3.6 billion.
The park has no plans to raise admission fees, currently HK$399, before two other areas - Grizzly Gulch and Mystic Point - are completed.
Kam does not see the planned Disneyland in Shanghai, which is expected to open in 2016, as a rival.
He believes the park on Lantau Island will remain a favorite with locals and mainlanders alike.
It saw its net loss narrow to HK$718 million last year, compared to HK$1.32 billion in 2009.
