View Full Version : BEIJING - National Stadium (80,000) Sexas July 25th, 2008, 06:00 PM wish they put the tree earlier, so it is a tree instead a stick :) Gaeus July 25th, 2008, 07:56 PM I haven't missed any point. I've been following London 2012 since it's inception and understand the project well. London would be stupid to try to compete with Beijing in terms of the grandeur of the venues; we all know that. Therefore the focus is on the environment; the park, the rivers, the ambience AND venues that are appropriate to that vision. It's like Wimbledon on a massive scale in some ways, or a giant summer festival. It's a different focus to Beijing, and it will, I think provide a nice contrast to what has gone before. London does want to do "the best" but that doesn't necessarily mean pouring untold extra billions into venues to make them architectural wonders of the world which is what Beijing is doing (and they are wonderful venues, no doubt about that). I can't imagine any Games in the next couple of decades coming close to Beijing in terms of architecture. Beijing will set a high watermark in that regard that very few cities will come close to matching. I have a feeling that some Russian City will. Probably St. Petersburg but definitely Moscow. They have the money just like Beijing and they have the influence as well. Let's wait and see . . . Sexas July 25th, 2008, 09:51 PM ^^ I totally agree with you, one word: D U B A L !! Sexas July 25th, 2008, 09:52 PM yes, I'm pretty sure the cauldron will be inside the arch. little bird told me, it will be flowing - a cauldron flow up to the heaven just like the Kung Ming lantern <--another Chinese invention! Don't attack me, I have no proof. Just a little brid told me.... kuw01medan July 26th, 2008, 04:20 AM aaaataaaataaat gimme more plz ..... rockin'.baltimorean July 26th, 2008, 04:31 AM that's a beautiful lookin' stadium!!!!:okay: chao July 26th, 2008, 08:43 AM I know a lot of people like this design but I've got to tell you honestly that, with all due respect, it looks like a giant deformed toilet seat. Am I the only one that thinks the birds nest looks like a toilet here? Indeed,in dung beetle's eye it resembles a toilet seat JPBrazil July 26th, 2008, 09:18 AM well, it's the most beautiful, futuristic and expensive toilet on earth Maxxclip July 26th, 2008, 09:23 AM ^^and the most unusual 'toilet rim' on the face of the earth:) redstone July 26th, 2008, 09:51 AM In my opinion, the design is not exactly original either. Take a look at this Chinese bamboo basket: http://www.globalsources.com/gsol/I/Utility-basket/p/bg/1001709831.htm So what is original? YelloPerilo July 26th, 2008, 10:42 AM ^^ I smell trolling :D YelloPerilo July 26th, 2008, 11:13 AM There were not much of a garden city outside of the 3rd ring anyway. YelloPerilo July 26th, 2008, 11:45 AM Beijing is greener than ever before. Viewed from the top, it's a giant messy toilet; viewed from the ground, it's a giant messy bamboo basket; viewed from a 45 degree angle, it's a giant deformed toilet seat on top of a giant bamboo basket. ...well a giant bamboo basket toilet seat is way better than the paper lantern for London 2012  RobH July 26th, 2008, 01:38 PM I'd be interested to hear what you think of Chicago's bid for 2016 since you seem to criticise London's stadium at every opportunity (which is fine, that's your opinion). bobdikl July 26th, 2008, 02:20 PM actually the toilet seat controversy is nothing new. There has been an unmistakable pattern when it comes to fashion or uniform design in China - designers with no common sense or artistic flair. In casual terms, the designers have demonstrated either a really bad taste or no taste at all. Have you seen the Chinese team uniforms for the Opening ceremonies? Atrocious!! You are generalising. There are some really cool Chinese fashion designers, but the problem lies within the bureaucracy. Very often you have people in higher position who are from a different generation with very little exposure to art and culture. And then you have the different departments who are wrangling for competence and who have their little power skirmishes within the department and with other departments. But thit could happen everywhere in the world. redstone July 26th, 2008, 04:32 PM I've pretty much said it all. Viewed from the top, it's a giant messy toilet; viewed from the ground, it's a giant messy bamboo basket; viewed from a 45 degree angle, it's a giant deformed toilet seat on top of a giant bamboo basket. Sexas July 26th, 2008, 09:01 PM I'd be interested to hear what you think of Chicago's bid for 2016 since you seem to criticise London's stadium at every opportunity (which is fine, that's your opinion). There are lights everywhere. I don't know which Olympic Park tops that! Probably, the 1972 Munich Olympic Park but I think this one in Beijing is better. One suggestion though . . . If I understand by the term 'look', you are referring to the product design, the logos, the torch design etc, then this is one of the most successful 'looks', it is distinctly Asian in flavour, no one can deny this. From the scroll design of the torch, the use of 'Chinese colours' in everything, the mascots, the specially commissioned incidental and background music, the exceptional medal design (using gold, jade and bronze). It makes it's recent predecessors generic. Athens and Sydney, i'm sorry are interchangeable. Alternatively, it could be that you don't think the Olympics should have an Asian influence. Perhaps it should always look like the generic western look... jak3m August 5th, 2008, 02:19 PM All the venues apart from the Birds nest lack imagination and design. The watercube and birds nest are wonderful looking buildings but every single other aspect of the games are boring. Hopefully London will will have better looking facilities in 2012. savas August 5th, 2008, 03:33 PM The 'Look' is one of it's chief selling points. The Look of the Games (the logotypes, pictograms and the decorations graphics) is partialy very unimaginative. Just using the "lucky cloud" pattern over and over again (like sydney did) with rainbow gradients is very boring. It lacks the richness of chinese ornamental culture and art. I would have expected more creativity from a culture of 5000 years. As about the Athens Look of the Games; it has nothing in common with Sydney. As i wrote in another thread it is the result of researching 5000 years of hellenic culture and art and creating a new, simplistic, for everyone understandable design. It is joyfull, elegant and very creative. It represents hellenic art in combination with the elements of nature, the sea, the earth, the sky and the sun. There was 11 different patterns created and a colour palette of mediterranean, greek freshness which allowed to the organizers to choose fitting colour combinations for each sport. I will not post pictures because i dont want to go too much off topic. From the Beijing Look of the Games i like the pictograms which are really good. The graphics of "lucky cloud" are ok but boring. The logotypes "torch relay" "environment" etc. are nice. The Torch is great. But all together it lacks the harmony of a unity. As about the music, well we have first to hear this music and then we can judge... howelee August 5th, 2008, 05:52 PM All the venues apart from the Birds nest lack imagination and design. The watercube and birds nest are wonderful looking buildings but every single other aspect of the games are boring. Hopefully London will will have better looking facilities in 2012. As a third world country with democratic system, funding and labours will be major problems for Britain to hold the Olympics. Perhaps Londoners have better designers, but how can they get adequate money and workers to build the stadiums? Look at the 'shard', they even have problems to demolish the old tower. I really doubt that London is able to complete the construction work before 2012. Mo Rush August 5th, 2008, 06:09 PM many venues have very bland designs. Even flashy indoor venues look dead. The interior of some venues e.g. judo venue, don't do justice to the exterior design. As about the music, well we have first to hear this music and then we can judge... Umm...Savas of Greece, If you search back 7 years of record, you will see the design is "Unity" and Chinese Elements - Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth. Because these Games are going to be the most spectacular, ever. It will completely over shadow Sydney (arguably the most spectacular to date). In terms of the UK, we don't have a cat in hells chance of matching this, some biased individual mentioned that Beijing only has the Birdsnest and Watercube as the only 2 venues worth their salt (or words to that effect). This is so obviously untrue, it's almost laughable. What has London got? The original concept for the aquatics centre is noteworthy, but NOW, it's been watered down so much that it's just ugly -a total mish mash. The Velodrome, as per usual with the UK, has been revised and cut down. So we had 2 potential good designs and that's about it. Everything is now drawing towards the opening ceremony which will be the most spectacular. It's obvious there are going to be comparisons. Today we even had an article in Yahoo stating that China was going overboard in it efforts to make the Games successful. I mean why would you write an article complaining about the amount of money spent on the venues, the opening ceremony and security - if not to simply 'China Bash' and disguise obvious envy. They can spend what they like, its of no concern to anyone else. afac90 August 7th, 2008, 07:09 PM wowww...... this is going to be hard ....for london........cause......beijing is very prepared........ (I think about white since it is the mother of all colors, but it just not look good!!) I think the Chinese one is better, unlike last time it need explanation. What is going on the Greek and the Brit start attacking the game?? Greek guy won't accept that the Beijing one is way way better than the Athens venue. He still got the Athenian spirit within him for thousands of years. The London guy is still full of joy after they won the 2012 Venue but he can't accept the fact that London may have a hard time catching up with the budget. I think the only fact that can beat Beijing is the political and environmental aspect. Pollution and political stability will now play a critical role in the next venues. I am still hoping that Dubai or Moscow will win it because they have the money and the "guts"! I especially liked the huge LED screen on the ground. Only the cauldron dissapointed me. The best Olympic cauldron imo was the one in Sydney, where they lit it on the ground, raised it up around the athlete with the torch, and then hauled the whole thing up to the roof. redstone August 8th, 2008, 07:14 PM The running across the roof was amazing, but the lighting itself was disappointing. LOS ANGELES 1984: It was amazing, the rocket man, the All American Band, the 84 grand pianos playing Rhapsody in Blue is un-matched...oh, and the L.A. Olympics Theme, which we all know became symbolic of the Olympic movement. SEOUL 1988: Drums, that's all I remember, many many drums BARCELONA 1992: The sailing ships and the archer lighting the cauldron ATLANTA 1996: The bombing, the aweful cauldrom tower, and the shadowie thing they did on the field SYDNEY 2000: I can't remember, all i remember is the caudron got stuck for like 15 minutes climbing up the waterfall step thing ATHENS 2004: The cauldron was interesting, weird, but interesting, and the Let's see what Beijing brings to the table...... skytrax August 8th, 2008, 08:14 PM For me is the Best ceremony ever!!! They didn't know anything about Chinese culture and history and were constantly spewing either nonsense or worse: human right here, possible protest during the parade there. They were really hoping for some kind of disruptions. TEBC August 8th, 2008, 08:39 PM At one point during the ceremony, I realized that almost 2 billions were watching 3 guys with puppets - very little ones! - and seemed to take forever to finish... Then, I changed the channel... lol i did the same!! it looks like a poor show in a chinatown plaza!! boring and chisy. bobdikl August 8th, 2008, 08:49 PM hey guys, cool down...it's just an opening ceremony! jak3m August 8th, 2008, 08:49 PM for me the drums at the very beginning did it for me. they gave me goosebumps when the lights went out and it was just red lights banging against the drums, then the ceremony got gradually boring. however i also liked how the globe came from under ground, the countdown and the lighting of the torch. mr.x August 8th, 2008, 08:50 PM Here's the Beijing 2008 theme song "You And Me", sung by Liu Huan and Sarah Brightman: MLIpcNhmPWQ General Huo August 8th, 2008, 09:32 PM Go China! GO! 4s4zg2O9qiE TEBC August 8th, 2008, 10:23 PM Do you anthing anything about chinese culture???. You guys just talk crap. i know more then you can image but i recognise that im not a specialist. Just like all 4 billion people that watched the show. So they shuld show things from their culture more interesting than some dolls dancing.. thats just my opionion.. the confution part was nice, and about the bamboo and paper also.. but i thought the dolls really boring. I cant know about a culture and dont like it?!?! i like the chinese culture... this only thing in the OC that i dont. Rightconservative August 8th, 2008, 10:24 PM and in SPORTV, the sports cable channel of Globo TV, the most famous basketball player in Brazil did the worst job ever with bad jokes, stupid coments and more. Really?! I missed! But he was on Globo TV as well... I think he is so funny. He was mad, 'cause didn't allow him to carry the brazilian flag once... And then he said that Brazilian soccer team would loose to Korea on live broadcasting.... Lol... So funny! He was very mad!
