Question: what is that, that looks like a giant LCD that scrolls like paper, and the dancers on top of it??? Yes, it was a giant LED not LCD screens cheaply made in China, the one you see at New York wall street, tokyo, this time they make it bigger and place it right on the stadium center. They even have underground right in the center where the big globe re-appear. In the Philippines, LED screens are scattered all over Mercury drug outlets in the provinces. That was an optical illusion. The floor of the podium consists of 2 parts that could open. 1 part to the left, one to the right. On each part they installed one side of the scroll. The screen on the scrolls was moving so it looked like a paperscroll rolling out. It looked very good and this show was the best show ever. brummad August 10th, 2008, 12:37 PM the floor screen is a mixture of both things you have suggested, the flat surface is a back lit led vision wall, very simple but very effective this is not connected at all to the ends of the floor scroll, they are independant led vision mats wrapped over a cylinder, with clever programming you can make the three elements fuse together in a very effective visual display. this technology was first used on stage most notably by kylie minogue in her showgirl tour a couple of years ago. beijing used it brilliantly, a fantastic visual display in a wonderful opening ceremony. i was also impressed with the use of multi layer projection technology, again something that was developed for theater but wideley used in municipal art and display installations, beijing just took its use to a whole new level (esp the journey around the roof before the lighting of the cauldron) well done and i hope that clarifies your visual questions xx CarlosBlueDragon August 10th, 2008, 01:08 PM ^^ A must. Olympic opening ceremony combines technology, originality 2008-08-10 BEIJING, Aug. 10 -- With huge LED screens, eye-catching lighting systems and multimedia video shows, one of the hallmarks of the Games' opening ceremony was its use of cutting-edge technology. This was thanks to the efforts of Yu Jianping, director of the technology group for the opening ceremony, who led a 500-strong team of experts From the elevated platform to the video system, the creation team worked hard to ensure that the whole ceremony went without a hitch. "The technology used at the Games' opening ceremony was some of the most complicated in history," Yu said. "One of the features of the ceremony was its perfect combination of advanced technology and great originality." At the event, a 147 m by 22 m LED screen, one of the biggest in the world, was laid at the center of the stadium. There was also a 36-m long by 30-m wide structure, with a total of 11 separate elevated platforms. "Since all of the facilities were completed on June 10, we had only two months to tackle any problems," Yu, who is also the deputy designer of Shenzhou VII, China's third manned spacecraft, said. On Yu's initiative, modern technology was introduced to many aspects of the ceremony. Apart from the huge LED screen and elevated platform, the globe that rose up at the end of the performance was another highlight. With a diameter of 18 m, the globe weighs around 16 tons and can be raised to a height of 24 m. A total of 58 actors performed at the globe, with half of them being upside down for part of the time. "It was the first time such a huge globe was used in China," Yu said. "The material on its surface was a kind of flexible aluminum." Their other creations included the huge scroll, 20 mm thick and weighing around 800 g, and the digital direction and control system. "Apart from the communication system, all of the technology we used was developed by Chinese companies," Yu said. Right on if that's what people wanna talk about  brummad August 10th, 2008, 05:36 PM multilayer projection doesnt eliminate shadows as it is basically light being projected onto a background and anything that gets in the way would leave shadows however when there are no objects stopping the light multilayer shows its worth in the way that you can remove certain parts of an image or indeed add parts of an image to a whole projection, this is possible because one image is created by using 2 or more projections, normally one would 'shine out' the other but with this technology you can prioritise certain elements of an image removing the risk of out shining. i am not an expert on this and do not know all the ins and outs of how it works but as far as i know beijing used a total of 12 high density projectors for the inside of the roof of the birds nest which is unheard of and sooooooooooo complicated to do! the best eg of multilayer projection used on friday was the vt's of the torch relay left behind after the scroll moved around the roof and the flying birds. oh yes another thing multi layer allows is a smooth transition from one projection area to another in effect having a black projection (not a blank one!) and then allowing the image to emerge from the black thus creating a smooth transition from one area to another .... eg whales at opening ceremony. with this technique it can be hard to understand how it all works but if you just imagine the cistine chapel as a blank canvas then projecting the frescos onto it using one projector for each colour, that kind of helps to explain it. anyway i love it lol! ecotecture August 10th, 2008, 05:42 PM I love the stadium! The Chinese have this expertise in abundance. Secondly, and I think most importantly, this type of synchronisation is specific to Chinese and asians in general. The Chinese have this type of artistic performance running throughout their history and culture, from various forms of dance, to military marches and even martial arts. For us to do this is ridiculous and I fear the effect would be rather superficial. We have no history of this in our culture. We will have to find something else. The only other Opening Ceremony to use this concept was in Seoul... yes i agree the mass people thing was by far the most impressive, however i love the extravegance of chinas modern culture and ancient culture. the screens and fireworks were also fantastic. our plans for the olympics make me ashamed to be english. Whilst the procurement and progress has not been ideal and the venues not as good as Beijing, I do not feel ashamed. It's too strong a word! There is much to celebrate in our culture, albeit a smaller pool to choose from. brummad August 10th, 2008, 06:23 PM peripheral vision, ability to move, time to rehearse, memory of sequences get a load of dance studenst to do it ...no worries redstone August 10th, 2008, 06:31 PM Romans and vikings??? Why should London present italian or scandinavian history? The British Isles, and pretty much of Europe and the north coast of Africa were under the Romans once. Anita2008Beijing August 10th, 2008, 06:44 PM I'm not so sure we can do that! We need to amass some 2,000+ volunteers who have experience in this type of synchronised performance. Whilst the procurement and progress has not been ideal and the venues not as good as Beijing, I do not feel ashamed. It's too strong a word! There is much to celebrate in our culture, albeit a smaller pool to choose from. Don't worry. The directors do have inspirations to show us the historic and cultural parts . They always give us the surprise in the end, of course beyond our expectation. I am sure the upcoming London's opening ceremony will be spectacular. I am of course happy to see awesome opening cememony of Beijing Olympics. Thank our Chinese director, Yimou Zhang for the great job. For me a new reference, very difficult to beat. Maybe 007/Q can help London? ;) @Gaeus The Beatles,Stones&Co are still pretty unknown in many countries. Years ago I guided tourists from Asia in the German city of Lübeck, hometown of Thomas Mann, so before his house I asked them "Do you know who the guy was?" "Yes". Then we passed a music shop window where I saw a book about The Beatles. "You know them?". The answer was "No". (Advertisement) The global television audience of more than three billion people watched in amazement as a series of giant footprints outlined in fireworks proceeded through the night sky from Tiananmen Square to the Bird's Nest stadium - except they were watching a computer animation. Even the giant television screens within the stadium itself broadcast the fake images. Stunned viewers thought they were watching the string of fireworks filmed from above by a helicopter. But in reality they were watching a 3D graphics sequence that took almost a year to produce. It even included a 'camera shake' to mimic the effect of filming from a helicopter. The dupe was revealed by China's Beijing Times. Speaking to the paper, the man responsible for the animation said he was pleased with the result. "Seeing how it worked out, it was still a bit too bright compared to the actual fireworks," Gao Xiaolong told the newspaper. "But most of the audience thought it was filmed live - so that was mission accomplished." The designers even added some haziness to simulate the polluted Beijing skyline. Broadcasters around the world had no choice but to show the footage because it all came from one feed provided by Beijing Olympic Broadcasting - the organisation responsible for filming the games. The ceremony has also been strongly criticised by architect Ai Weiwei, who helped design the Bird's Nest stadium. Writing on his blog, Mr Ai described the ceremony as "a recycling of the rubbish of fake classical culture tradition; a sacrilegious visual garbage dump and an insult to the spirit of liberty; low class sound play that's just noise pollution". He was directly critical of China's ruling communist party, characterising the ceremony as "a showcase of the reincarnation of the Marxist imperialism; the ultimate paragon of an all embracing culture of fascist totalitarianism; an encyclopaedia that encompasses total defeat in intellectual spirit." Mr Ai helped design the stadium alongside Swiss architect firm, Herzog and de Meuron. But since then, he has become an outspoken blogger against the Olympics and the Chinese regime. Unusually, he has not been censored by the authorities. Organiser said that the footprint fireworks were there for real, but thought it unsafe to try to film them - so they recreated them instead. http://uk.news.yahoo.com/skynews/20080811/twl-olympic-fireworks-faked-for-tv-3fd0ae9.html i dont know how true or not true this is, but its in the news, find it a risky thing to do and do not want to believe it. I personally feel that its just dissident issue, trying to humiliate china's leaders :bash: snow is red August 11th, 2008, 05:43 PM ^^ lol if people believe it then fine. We just need to ask the audiences who were sitting right in the Stadium to know it, hey many world leaders are there too. Ye it was fake  zenith_suv August 11th, 2008, 05:45 PM got to appreciate the graphic designer behind it then , much easier to have real fireworks than do computer graphics. Gaeus August 11th, 2008, 05:56 PM LOL! Sky News! I was there and it was cool! There are nothing fake. I can't believe this is headline. Well, I'm off to sleep for another day of the Olympics! Good Night!!! Gaeus August 11th, 2008, 06:01 PM DELETE. Double Post. snow is red August 11th, 2008, 06:11 PM @ Skydive and Gaeus Probably Skynews got it wrong or they did not elaborate it more. Anyone who saw the opening to the Bejing Olympics would agree that the fireworks display was exceptional, but those watching at home were tricked into thinking what they saw was real, when some of it was actually CGI. The fakery was unearthed by a local Chinese newspaper, The Beijing Times, which revealed that a 55-second sequence was created by a visual effects team, which included a series of giant footsteps made by fireworks. Confusingly, this actually took place in the real ceremony, but the organisers felt that the sequence of 28 footprints would not be accurately captured live, so they faked it. Risk assessment Speaking to The Beijing Times, an advisor to the Beijing Olympic Committee (BOCOG) defended the decision: "It would have been prohibitive to have tried to film it live," he said. "We could not put the helicopter pilot at risk by making him try to follow the firework route." To emulate the shot, the visual effects team actually put a slight camera shake on to the image, and even spoke to the Beijing meteorological office to ask them how to recreate the Beijing smog. http://www.techradar.com/news/world-of-tech/olympic-fireworks-digitally-faked-449304 So it did actually happen in real life but for safety reasons of the pilot, they made a CGI one for home viewers. But I am still not sure about this news. Skydive, I don't think this is dissident issue or try to humiliate China's leader, if this holds true, it is just another piece of technology in action. ecotecture August 11th, 2008, 08:36 PM There is nothing wrong to cheat during the live show with pre-recorded fireworks IMO. That doesn't mean that those fireworks didn't happen. That's called perfectionism. I think this is genius! Athen dissapointed me VERY MUCH. I wanted them to do a real good job, cause it was GREECE. ATHEN - THE olympic city!!! But I hated that boring show. I think I never saw something less entertaining. I really felt sorry for Greece. Boribel August 12th, 2008, 12:41 AM I think Athens was better. Beijing was extremely beautifuL but Athens was just unique. brummad August 12th, 2008, 01:28 AM i cant believe people thought the footprint fireworks were real, i know lets get a helicopter to fly over a load of fireworks lol still i liked it, it worked and was a great little little intro who cares if that was VT it does not take away the fact that this was the greatest opening ceremony ever, bring on london (even my mother was laughing at the prospect of london 2012 following that lol) Bandit August 12th, 2008, 03:42 AM I live in the US and the NBC broadcast informed the viewers that segment was computer generated as it happened. Think about it - How many times have the journos intimated that was the most important night in modern Chinese history? Why else would the stadium roof need that thick rim that acted as a default movie screen? Why have a solid roof at all except for the lighting effects it created for the big event? Yes, it is an athletics venue and will succeed as such, but I truly believe many aspects of the design were influenced solely by the opening ceremonies. Here is a suggestion....whatever is stuck up your ass that is causing you to be such a whiney Athens-hater, please pull it out and bring yourself back down to reality. Your bashing is getting quite pathetic and desperate. The lighting of the Beijing cauldron was great but there is nothing special about its actual shape or design. If you knew ANYTHING about the significance of the shape of the Athens cauldron you would know that its shape was a direct replica of the torch used throughout the relay which was in the shape of an olive leave. The olive tree (and its leaves) is where the ancient wreaths were made from and awarded (placed on their heads) to the athletes in ancient times.... TEBC August 20th, 2008, 06:22 AM Beijing Olympic Closing Ceremony Unrehearsed Tuesday, August 19, 2008 11:49am EDT GB Staff Font size: Beijing News reported Monday that the Closing Ceremony for the Beijing Summer Games will be unrehearsed. It seems the men's marathon will end at the National Stadium (Bird's Nest) about noon where the Closing Ceremony is being held, leaving only eight hours for the organizers to prepare for the Closing Ceremony. The newspapers added that small rehearsals are being held at training sites away from the stadium. Also time has been allotted to London 2012 organizers to rehearse an eight-minute handover ceremony. Zhang Yimou, chief director of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, said earlier this month that the climax of the show would come as the Olympic flame is extinguished. He said, "we are dedicated to creating a happy atmosphere at the Closing Ceremony. The message is to say goodbye, and to promise to meet again in four years". Meanwhile organizers have reportedly made contingency plans for any emergency that might occur during the event, including rain. According to the newspaper organizers may have to cut or readjust part of the show should there be rain, but on the whole it should not spoil the event. The China Daily reports Tuesday the Closing Ceremony includes a performance by world famous Spanish tenor Placido Domingo in a duet with Chinese soprano star Song Zuying. Tao Chunjie, director of the first scene of the Closing Ceremony, told Chinese media earlier that the program will feature elements of south-western China's Yunnan culture. There will also be a kung fu display featuring 350 practitioners from a local marital arts school in addition to 60 players of the Chinese string instrument "erhu". The British Daily Mirror reports that football star David Beckham will appear during the handover ceremony. Beckham is expected to arrive on top of one of London's famous red double-decker buses before he kicks a football into the crowd. Hundreds of dancers from Britain will then perform ballet and break-dancing routines as the countdown to 2012 begins. During the handover ceremony former Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page will perform a duet with pop star Leona Lewis, reports the Daily Telegraph. China Daily reports British Prime Minister Gordon Brown will be handed the Olympic flag on behalf of London. According to the BBC, those connected with the London segment said it will be in stark contrast to the Chinese goodbye and will also "contain quite a lot of humour". dmscopio August 20th, 2008, 07:27 PM 08-15-08 Inside the bird's nest from beijingupdates.com, by 欣悦 http://www.beijingupdates.com/forum/UploadFile/2008-8/200881620265066255.jpg http://www.beijingupdates.com/forum/UploadFile/2008-8/200881620272188112.jpg http://www.beijingupdates.com/forum/UploadFile/2008-8/200881620275515943.jpg http://www.beijingupdates.com/forum/UploadFile/2008-8/200881620283255068.jpg http://www.beijingupdates.com/forum/UploadFile/2008-8/20088162029487333.jpg http://www.beijingupdates.com/forum/UploadFile/2008-8/200881620365230496.jpg http://www.beijingupdates.com/forum/UploadFile/2008-8/200881620374855606.jpg http://www.beijingupdates.com/forum/UploadFile/2008-8/20088162045575406.jpg http://www.beijingupdates.com/forum/UploadFile/2008-8/200881620462166410.jpg http://www.beijingupdates.com/forum/UploadFile/2008-8/200881620512775671.jpg http://www.beijingupdates.com/forum/UploadFile/2008-8/200881620581394316.jpg why am i still getting news about foreigner not able to see clear sky in Beijing? I think the architecture for the Olympic games is absolutely phenomenal. I've never seen such a beautiful stadium as the Bird's Nest, with its crazy exterior and massive, gleaming inside. The setting, all lit up night with the Water Cube and fountains is gorgeous. It can be Beijing's icon. Hope all the venues continue to be used regularly by local and international people. Huge congratulations to the architects. cmoonflyer August 27th, 2008, 09:27 AM Bird's Nest http://bbs.home.news.cn/upfiles/037879D2.002C big-dog August 27th, 2008, 10:03 AM here's quotes an article on the afterlife of Olympic stadiums What's Next for the Bird's Nest? http://www.slate.com/id/2198671/ By Juliet Lapidos Posted Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, at 4:23 PM ET For the 29th Olympiad, which ended on Sunday, the Chinese built or renovated 31 venues in and around Beijing. Construction of the six main sporting facilities—including the Bird's Nest and the Water Cube—cost more than $2 billion. For the 2004 Olympics in Athens, which was conducted on a somewhat smaller scale, the Greeks built 22 venues. What happens to all the fancy stadiums after the closing ceremonies? They're downsized into workaday sporting arenas, reborn as hotels and shopping malls, or fall into disrepair. The Bird's Nest stadium will become home to Beijing's Guoan Football Club and double as an entertainment complex for concerts. State-run investment group CITIC will reduce seating from 91,000 to 80,000 and redevelop the surrounding area to include hotels, malls, and restaurants. It's estimated that the reconstruction will cost 300 million yuan (almost $44 million) and that the annual operating cost of the stadium complex will be about 70 million yuan (about $10.2 million). Seating will also be reduced at the Water Cube, which will become a training and recreation center for swimmers and divers. Plans are underway to add tennis courts, retail outlets, restaurants, and night clubs. As for some of the less talked-about venues: The fencing hall will be converted into a conference center; the National Indoor Stadium will become a multi-use facility, hosting arts and entertainment events as well as athletic competitions; and athlete accommodations in the Olympic Village are being sold as private residences. Especially when compared with Beijing's detailed plans, Athens hasn't handled the post-Olympics well. The badminton stadium built for the 2004 Games is now a theater, and a government ministry has moved into the media center. But the two main arenas at the Faliro Bay Complex are vacant, there are squatters' camps in the adjoining fields, and the open-air swimming pool goes unused. Sydney, site of the 2000 Games, has fared a bit better. The National Rugby League holds its grand finale at the main stadium, and other entertainment events take place there as well. Redevelopment of the Olympic Park as a mixed-use residential and commercial site, however, has been slow going. Plans weren't finalized until 2005, and construction isn't finished yet. After hosting the Games in 1996, Atlanta turned its main stadium over to the Atlanta Braves. Georgia Tech manages the aquatic center and houses students in the Olympic Village. The city uses the Centennial Olympic Park for its annual Independence Day fireworks display and for outdoor concerts. Lake Placid, site of the 1980 Winter Games, can lay claim to the most bizarre post-use plan. After the Games, the athletes' village became Ray Brook, a correctional facility. (Prison-camp inmates had constructed the ski trails for the alpine events.) yxfs2000 August 28th, 2008, 05:00 AM these projects of openning ceremony were give up
