The architect's who designed this, should have a design for a retractable roof.

I disagree. A retractable roof for this stadium would have compromised the strength of the design, IMO.

After the news London's Olympics is going to cost a lot more than realized, either it's not going to turn out like you expect or you're going to go through economic depression like previous host cities.

The architect's who designed this, should have a design for a retractable roof.

The reason why the Bird's Nest won't have a roof like originally designed is because after some of the architect's designing for Beijing have had disasters recently with their buildings in Europe. Eliminating the roof was just a precautionary measure to relieve unnecessary weight on the structure.

A couple of billion ain't gonna send London into an economic depression.

Well if it wasn't a problem then it wouldn't have been a story. Besides I heard it was the other option on how it was going to be handled. London is going to have to cut from what was promoted.

The bird nest used to have a roof in its original design, but later cancelled due to cost issue. Supposely the stadium will be finished 1 year ahead of the game, that is, this Auguest, but I think that schedule may get delayed.

London is going to have to cut from what was promoted.

Just as every other Olympic host city has had to. Beijing promised a whole lot more than what we are getting, so did Athens and Sydney. You can't build a bid that wins an Olympic Games and expect to stick to every detail in that bid; costs rise, budgets are set and unexpected problems arise over the seven years of building an Olympic Games.

You live in clock cuckoo land if you expect everything to go to plan.

Put London aside (since we don't know yet) I think Beijing follow the plan very close to the detail, all I can think of is the huge TV wall and the roof. But all others come out look 100% like the design (remember half of the people here don't think the water cube will look good) The Sydney's one was good too btw. it come out just like everything they say...

Did I say anything of the sort? It's you hooligans that come in this thread bringing the stink. Go to your own thread and express your envy there. Just like when you guys came in here bringing the stink when you won the 2012 games but all of the sudden disappeared when the whole budget story broke. Now the hooligans are building up their courage again bringing the stink as usual but quickly disappeared. I wonder why. Maybe they were all having epileptic seizures.

You are 100% wright.

Take London for example, the expected figure has shot up 3 to 4 times from the original quote. You can not budget for something seven years down the road at today's costing.

A second layer of ETFE membrane will prevent the shadow issue. It will almost form a sort of insulation against heat, will minimize shadows and minimize noise pollution, I am actually not sure about it reducing shadows but i do hope so

Bandit
June 11th, 2007, 11:48 PM
Actually if they're going to install that inner membrane like depicted, most of the sunlight will be diffused and might be more pleasant than the sun coming down in the center. I wonder if they can use the membrane to project images on it. The opening ceremony would look spectacular with that use.

Beijing Olympic ping pong venue on fire
By Alice Gu 2007-7-2

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q171/patarapong/2.jpg

AN indoor gymnasium that is under construction to hold table tennis matches of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games is on fire, Xinhua news agency reported.

No casualty has been reported from the accident which happened at about 8:14am on the campus of Beijing University, where the venue is.

Seventeen fire engines have been dispatched to the scene, Xinhua said.

The gym, covering 26,900 square meters, is designed to host 8,000 spectators. The construction began in September, 2005, and is expected to be finished next month.

It is due to host an Olympic test event in December.

So it can be used for track and field for local or international events. One event stadium is a waste of money. Toronto's Skydome - now Rogers dome- can only be used for football and baseball. If Toronto won the Olympic bid against Beijing, Toronto would have to built another stadium to accommodate track and field.

Well this isn't the main Olympic Stadium, how many times is this going to be used for International Athletics? I thought it would have made sense to use this as a purpose built football stadium for use for a future World Cup bid.

^^ I think that might be the cultural difference. Even Chinese soccer league is not held in soccer stadium but in complete stadium with track and field. We do not have many stadiums only for soccer after all. This is totally different in UK from what I see in premier league.
I think this is due to full stadiums are cost effective and soccer leagues are not popular in China compared to say UK.

I actually find the 'birds nest' very beautiful. Initally I liked the conceptual design of the aquatic centre, but seeing the photos people have posted, I like it even more! In fact I am really impressed with the structure that is now taking form.

And I hope London doesn't try to be as out there. I'd rather a nice stadium be built along with the goals that the IOC claim to be all about.

Really? What's wrong with creating something unique, iconic, memorable? I'm not just talking about physicality. I've been reading a lot of literature regarding these Games and already people are coining it the 'Green Games' . Basically a reference to how the Beijing games are a template for future games in sustainability and environmental impact.

Why settle for 'nice'...

I love the stadium, but the watercube seems weird in daylight. (please don't kill me for saying this!)
Explaining: It's unique, and I bet with lights, at night, it will have a wonderful effect. But it looks too fake, too plastic, as if it's not a permanent building.
It is, anyway, better than just a swimming pool in a building... It'll look great in the Olympics.
I just wish my country inspired more in the Chinese success than copying others' failures! (I mean the Pan-Am Games in Rio)

I think all the talk about the Aquatic centre being 'plastic' or 'fake' is just a reaction to people not being used to hi-tech materials such as ETFE being used as a building component! Basically 'the Shock of the New'!!! so to speak...

Unfortunately, over here, the only widely accepted materials are stone, brick, timber and glass. Steel and concrete to a much lesser extent - people are STILL suspicious of these materials!

I don't think this is the case in other countries. The UK, for the most part is unfortunately a terribly reactionary country. Forever harking back to a Georgian/Arts & Craft era that never was. How sad.

I'm not disputing that, but the fact is that the overwhelming majority of people in the UK are resistant to change. I'm glad that we have world leading architects who are not afraid to push the 'boundaries', but unfortunately, the public are not, in general, supportive of this. That is why there is a negative attitude and perception towards architects in the UK, that is not by and large representative abroad.

I think both of you are right to some extent... The British population (personal opinion) are quite often against ultramodern or daring developments. Or perhaps I should say, there is often a hell of alot of contraversy surrounding such developments. However, that said, most of London's biggest icons are major daring architectural desings such as the gherkin, lloyds, wembley, london eye etc. etc. They hate the idea, but love and embrace the reality.

I think it's petty and useless how people are constantly trying to compare Beijing and London (especially considering most is based on personal bias). Apples and oranges people. Both will have their pros and cons, but maybe wait until London release some final designs until you get on your bandwagon...

Sorry, didn't mean to to take this thread off topic. I think Beijing will be absolutely spectacular and completely different from any other olympic games previous. Bring it on!

They will. They were actually way ahead, their intended target was to finish everything a year earlier but IOC told the Chinese to slow down on their construction because the olympic venues would just be sitting there wasting money.

Well damaging physical property is rare in China, and since this is the Olympics the Chinese take great pride in it and I doubt anyone would want to ruin it besides foreign trouble makers. Sports hooligan exist in China like during soccer games but when it comes to big games like Asian Games, National Games these things are almost non existence.

I'm also sure its not that easily destroyed. Imagine if a bird flies by and decides to poke a few holes. I'm more worried about smokers, they just throw cigarette buds wherever imagine if one caught fire.

Come to think about it I think during a hail storm this cube would look amazing you can see all those hail stones bouncing on the top areas or off the bldg. lolz

Olympic Ticket Sales Suspended
www.chinaview.cn
2007-10-31 08:54:45

BEIJING, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- The sale of the second batch of Olympic tickets has been suspended after the booking system crashed under overwhelming demand on Tuesday, the first day tickets became available.

The Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games (BOCOG) said Tuesday night in a statement that they had decided to temporarily halt domestic ticket sales to improve the technical system and will announce new ticketing information on November 5.

"Because of the overwhelming volume of page visits, the technical system was unable to perform the tasks well enough, and many applicants were unable to successfully submit their applications," said the statement posted on BOCOG's website.

"We sincerely apologize to the public," it added.

The first-come-first-serve scheme had 1.85 million tickets on sale through the booking website, a hotline and 1,000 designated branches of the Bank of China.

But demand was much higher than organizers anticipated. According to the Beijing Olympic Ticketing Center, the official ticketing website (www.tickets.beijing2008.cn) saw 8 million hits in the first hour starting 9 a.m., while the ticketing hotline received 3.8 million calls.

About 43,000 tickets were successfully purchased before the system crashed half an hour after the sales started, more than 90 percent of them through the ticketing website, said Rong Jun, head of the Olympic ticketing center.

A total of 7 million tickets are available for the Games, with some 75 percent reserved for domestic sale. The first 1.6 million tickets were allocated after a lottery earlier this year. The third phase - from April to August next year - will also sell tickets on a first-come, first-serve basis.

You don't get that sort of behaviour over there, the Chinese have considerable pride in their public buildings and spaces. Over here in the UK though, that's a different matter! Imagine having the water cube in London - slashing WOULD then be a major concern... what with the current gun and knife culture that we have over here.... nightmare.
