Coverage Of Beijing 2008 Difficult For International Media
Posted 2:12 pm ET (GamesBids.com)

The Australian reports that Beijing 2008 officials won’t do any phone interviews with international media in case they are from the outlawed spiritual group Falun Gong.

According to the newspaper, an interview with Jiang Xiaoyu, BOCOG executive vice-president in charge of media and communications for its most recent article had been arranged months ago.

Jiang told The Australian, “for example the Falun Gong cult is illegal in China but they have their own journalists”. But he added that there won’t be any problem if there are written requests for interviews.

A year ago a Beijing-based Associated Press photographer was beaten up by a plainclothes policeman while photographing the violent scuffles, which broke out after China was defeated by Japan in the Asian Cup soccer final, reports the newspaper. Although the policeman was photographed no known disciplinary action was taken even though there was evidence provided and protests to the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Public Security by the Foreign Correspondents Club of China.

It is illegal for foreign journalists in China to interview any Chinese citizens or travel outside Beijing without government permission, says the newspaper, adding that those two rules are frequently used by provincial party functionaries to detain foreign journalists.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has been urging BOCOG to get outside help on dealing with the media, but has not been too successful. The BOCOG media office confirmed during the weekend it is looking to appoint a leading international public relations firm by the end of this year. Australian IOC member Kevan Gosper, deputy chairman of the IOC’s Coordination Commission for the Beijing 2008 Games “from our point of view that would not be a bad thing”.

Beijing 2008 is also hesitating to seek outside help in its security planning. Peter Phillips, a former key adviser to Beijing’s 2008 bid, said Beijing’s aim is to provide effective security of the Games at a lower cost than Athens and “without making it look like they run the joint like an armed camp”. He says key decisions on systems, procurement and training need to be made urgently, but “nothing appears to be happening” because the Chinese are so worried about appearing not to be able to manage security themselves. As a result Olympic venues are going up without security features. They will have to be built in later, which will be “very expensive and probably sub-optimal” said Phillips.

IOC Responds To Reporters Without Borders
Posted 12:54 pm ET (GamesBids.com)

Following the receipt of a petition Monday from Reporters Without Borders asking the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to pressure China to allow more freedom of expression ahead of the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games, IOC spokeswoman Giselle Davies said the committee was responsible first and foremost for the 17 day-competition, but she noted that part of that task involves ensuring media can do their work.

The Associated Press reports Davies saying, “the host city contract agreement clearly shows that for the 17 days of competition the roughly 20,000 accredited journalists coming from around the world will be able to fulfill their job reporting on the sporting competition and the Olympic Games activity”.

Meanwhile Beijing is continuing with its preparations for the 2008 Games. Monday Beijing 2008 organizers began soliciting designs from sculptors and designers all over the world via China’s embassies and consulates overseas and other international agencies and institutions, to leave a legacy for Beijing

Organizers will choose 290 pieces of work from all entries in the first half of 2006 before making three replicas of each selected entry, to tour the major cities across China.

In the second-round selection experts will choose 110 pieces through public votes and appraisals.

Twenty-nine designs will be chosen for the gold, silver and bronze awards.

Details will be available at Beijing 2008’s official Web site at www.beijing2008.com.

IOC Petitioned Over Press Freedom Ahead Of Beijing 2008 Games
Posted 12:08 pm ET (GamesBids.com)

Three years before the start of the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games, two representatives of Reporters Without Borders, handed a letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne with a petition signed by 4,000 people calling on the IOC’s member countries to put pressure on China to allow more freedom of expression.

A media release from the press freedom organization says it has on several occasions requested a meeting with IOC President Jacques Rogge to discuss these issues, but to date has not received a reply.

The release states that aside from the hundreds of blocked foreign news Web sites, the public security department keeps foreign correspondents under surveillance and does not hesitate to detain, threaten or even rough up those who violate the “sacrosanct” “Guide for correspondents working in China”.

It sites examples of journalists being arrested, stripped naked, questioned and beaten, and says more generally the freedom of movement of foreign journalists is being restricted.

Reporters Without Borders secretary-general Robert Menard said, “the IOC has a duty to influence the Chinese government’s policy towards Chinese and foreign journalists. Failure to act on this crucial point would be a momentous failure in the history of the Olympic Games”.

Reporters Without Borders is continuing to call for a boycott of the 2008 Games because they say the repression of dissident movements and ethnic or religious minorities has never stopped since Beijing was awarded those Games in July 2001.

Thousands have signed the petition, which states, “in view of the massive human rights violations in China, I think it is unacceptable if not dangerous to allow the Chinese government to organise the most prestigious sports event”.

I remember supporters of a Beijing Olympics (even the IOC itself if I recall correctlY) saying how before the nomination how it would help open China up and how China would feel it had to be on "good behaivor". That it would help eventually open it up to the outside and democratize it. I knew it was a bunch of bull then and was disspointed some actually tried to see this line, but I had hoped they would be right in the end.

These games will be nothing more then a propaganda tool on a massive scale for the Chinease leaders and a chance for them to treat their people like children and not involve them in the political process.

From what I heard, to save money, they removed the retractible roof portion that would've covered the field. Now it'll just be open-air, but the design should look exactly the same. :)

There hasn't really been major problems with building the new wembley stadium, it was the fiasco in planning it, the confusion in deciding how it would be funded and if the national stadium should be re-built on the same site. Besides Wembley will be a lot more impressive than the beiijing stadium comparing the renders and the information i've seen on facilites. This olympic stadium has had to be altered so costs are reduced. Also, the exterior looks quite ugly. After all the concerns over wembley it looks like it will be more than worth the pain preceding the build. In England we can be truly proud of such an arena.

If the actual construction is moving faster than Wembley(didnt the early framework actually go up quite quickly too?) I'd guess the key factor would be the cost of labour. I wouldnt be at all supprized if construction goes on 24/7 in Beijing for example where as it would be prohibitively expensive to do that in London.

I don't understand the 'Water Cube' ?

The Arup/PTW design, known as the 'Water Cube', plays on the geometry of water bubbles in a rectangular form. The structure's shape is specifically designed to work in harmony with the circular main Olympic stadium by the Swiss architectural team of Herzog & de Meuron Architekten with China Architecture Design and Research Group and Arup Sport London. Both are to be built on the Beijing Olympic Green.

There are two parts to the centre's structural framework - internal and external.

The external structure forms the actual roof and ceiling. This accepts the lightweight transparent 'teflon' known as ETFE pillow cladding. This face structure comprises a flat web of rectangular box sections bolted together on site. The building's skin, made from ETFE, has been designed to react specifically to lighting and projection. This state-of-the-art material provides a cost-effective cladding solution, enabling a wide range of applications where traditional materials, such as glass, may not be possible.

The internal steel space frame is based on the unique geometry of biological cells or soap bubbles. Arup based this 'soap bubbles' structural concept on a solution from two Irish Professors of Physics at Trinity College, Dublin. The benefits of this frame design, as well as looking like water bubbles, is that it is ideally suited to the seismic conditions found in Beijing. The system consists of three different steel nodes and four different steel members that will be fabricated from steel plate and bolted together on site.

As the building will be clad in ETFE cushions, it means that the solar energy falling on the building will help create a very efficient green house. This energy will be used to heat the pools and the interior area.

The building will be used both before and after the games as a multi-purpose leisure and swimming centre that, as well as swimming pools, will include a gym, ice-skating facilities and a cinema.

Normally swimming pools continually pump water into the local wastewater networks as they backwash their filtration systems. The Beijing scheme will run the backwash water through a two-stage filtration system before returning it back to the swimming pools. Before it is reused the backwash water from this secondary filter system will be left to settle out and then passed through external conditioning ponds before it enters the main pools. Apart from the environmental benefits, it was felt that to minimise the risk of low water levels due to Beijing's sporadic rainfall that the pool should be more self-reliant. However, rainfall will be used to provide top up water that will be stored in underground tanks.

I have a question - I'm always surprised by the building of these massive structures for the Olympics, considering that they only get used for like a month and then that's it. What happens to these structures say 10 years after the Olympics? Do they use them for other events?

I'm still searching for where it was said that 2008 is the last time baseball will be played in the Olympics. From what the London announcement said, London couldn't afford to build baseball and softball facilities so they asked if the two sports could be cancelled if they won.

That's complete crap, both sports were to be played in Regent's Park as part of the London bid. It was at the IOC vote that the two sports were removed but no other sports made enough votes to be included instead.

I think they already had a plan for them. For example, Athelete apartments will be sold, most arenas and stadiums will be opened to public or run by some companies, subway is built so people can easily get there. I also noticed many arenas are built inside the campus so students can use them too.

david's right...

I would also like to add that some (not many) of the stadiums are improvement or rebuilts of existing ones

also, Beijing has over 17 million residents... they'll find a use for them...

I don't know if you just misunderstood this issue or were being condescending. Of course London/UK could afford to build these venues; America isn't the only rich country in the world you know. I for one wanted these two sports at the olympics in 2012 as i think it would have promoted them in the UK and given us the chance to see a sport which is different to what we are used to. I think the London team weren't two bothered about them being dropped by the IOC. This is because they would probably have struggled to find a sustainable use for them as the sports are not popular over here. It's really, in part, the fault of the USA for not promoting the sport enough universally, attracting the best players, and failing to address certain drug allegations properly. Some other worthy sports should have been allowed to replace the two lost though.

- As a stadium, its a stadium. Because its new, I'm sure it will feel great as a new stadium
- As a design its daring. That's it. Not pretty or handsome. Not innovative. Just a stadium with a bunch of steel around it using old school ventilation(something about it I actually like) Perhaps the lighting will change my mind. I have a similar opinion of the London design, but I like it more than this one.

for those of you who say its daring or not or innovative or not i think that the engineering aspect of the wall becoming the roof and not ever being supported in the seats is a unique aspect, most stadiums that have columnless roofs have seperate roof and wall structures, the engineering here is so interesting IMO and scaled well that the structure even holds the circulation (see the renderings where an angled beam has the staircase on its face) this is very unique for a stadium especially since the roof is going in/down over the seats as opposed to arching up and over like most do (see berlins new roof), and while the london olympic venue is and can be great this is also a marvelous facility all things considered.

....yeah, kinda agree with you there, its a unique solution....but, I'm starting to get a bit bored with this 'spectacle' type architecture.
Whats beautiful about Berlin's Olimpiatadion is its restraint; it's austere and classy. What I find uncomfortable with Wembley's arch and Beijings olympic stadium is that they seem a bit desperate to grab attention. Herzog and de Meuron's Alianz Arena is a succinct design, its geometry describes its shape which announces itself as a stadium; with Beijings its all a bit ' hey look at us man we're ker-raaay-zeee, we're all ova da place with all our kerazee geometry'...

There's no denying the fact that its gone for the WOW factor and with modern techniques of illumination you can varnish turds, so this stadium whtever it looked like would've looked great, with this tired deconstuctivism it will probably look even better; which is the perfect image for a highly dubious political regime.

Berlin is a timeless classic that will never age - very few stadiums can claim this.

EADGBE
April 8th, 2006, 01:23 AM
Mmm, I'm going to have to suspend judgement until it's finished, too. I think there are some great points here, though. I agree that it may be daring and innovative in some ways but it is also rather self-aggrandising and yes, it could be a 'polished turd'. I think time will tell.

I'd have to agree that neither Beijing or Wembley will reach the classicism of Berlin, but then they all seem to have different a remit. I would see the three at vastly different points on the same continuum, describing them thus:

Berlin: A classic, reclaimed from a misguided conception. Deliberately left unspoiled by modernity as a defiant monument to mark the transition of its own past.

Wembley: An icon, but also a brand. Combines the signature of genuinely awesome engineering (the arch) with a safe, rather bland facade that reflects its corporate nature.

Beijing: A boast, an affirmation of status. Drawing from the Chinese obsession with 'the face', its exterior tries hard to be noticed and craves acceptance. Its roof construction is ingenious and intricate, while the bowl itself is simple and practical.

One other point on its speed. Yes it is progressing a) quickly and b) more quickly than Wembley, but before we start bashing Wembley and Multiplex too readily (again), bear in mind that the Health and Safety laws in China are nowhere near as stringent as they are in the UK. When I was in Hong Kong a few years back, I was amazed to see construction workers literally shinning up and down their bamboo scaffolds, halfway up skyscrapers (!)

It kinda reminded me of those well-known pictures of the men working on the Empire State Building:

http://www.buffalogames.com/Media/Product%20Images/BGI-COLLECT/330-Hist/hires/333-Lunc_hires.jpg

To be fair, I couldn't see any bamboo scaffold on the Olympic stadium, but I can't imagine the H&S is any more strict in Beijing than it is in HK!

I'm not saying that either is 'right' or 'wrong', just different. Contrast their process with that of the UK where every aspect of the process has to be risk assessed...

(BEIJING, April 10) -- The main structure of the National Aquatics Center, a major competition venue of the 2008 Olympic Games, was topped off today.

The Center, dubbed the Water Cube because of its state of the art architecture, is scheduled to produce 32 gold medals in the sport of swimming during the Beijing Olympiad in August 2008.

Located at the Olympic Green, it has a seating capacity of 17, 000, including 11,000 temporary ones.

Construction of the project started on 24 December 2003. It is the only sports venues of the Beijing Games funded by contributions of Chinese compatriots of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.

The builders of the project have resolved a series of technical problems including lack of steel resources, difficulty in processing structures, complexity in the structures' space positioning and high standard of melding. They completed the installation work 45 days ahead of schedule while ensuring safety and quality.

At the moment the project is under membrane structure installation, and electromechanical and fitment processes. The whole project is expected to be completed in October 2007.

I think he's talking about the Canadian documentary called "China Rises." I saw it expecting to see a lot about about the Olympic preparations too. It showed very little about. It was more about how people are being displaced by China's rapid development. I guess the message of the program is that since there's poor people in China, their economic programs are considerd a failure
