View Full Version : Dome of the Rock | Jerusalem, Israel
Dor. IL November 30th, 2005, 01:44 PM Located in what Muslims call the Noble Sanctuary — which Jews call the Temple Mount — it remains one of the best known landmarks of Jerusalem. The rock in the center of the dome is believed by Muslims to be the spot from which Muhammad was brought by night and from which he ascended through the heavens to God. Accompanied by the angel Gabriel, he was consulted by Moses and given the obligatory Islamic prayers before returning to earth. It is a holy place to Muslims. The Jews believe this place to be the location where Abraham almost sacrificed his son Isaac at the command of God, where Jacob saw the ladder to heaven, and where the innermost chamber of the Jewish Temple stood. Other, extra-Biblical Jewish traditions say it is the spot where the first stone was laid in the building of the world.

Gilgamesh November 30th, 2005, 02:42 PM Beautiful, It deserves 12/10. :colgate:
Yuval November 30th, 2005, 03:10 PM The interior tops the exterior, thanks to the extravagant arabesques that grace the dome and strange presence of the sacred rock itself. If anyone has photos, please post them.
I would add to the interesting list of beliefs the Islamic belief that all souls visit the cave beneath the rock on their way to the afterlife. In more peaceful days, even tourists could visit that exact chamber. Today, as far as I know, the sanctuary is closed to all but pious Muslims.
Laslty, it should be mentioned that this is an extraordinarily ancient masterpice, it dates from the late Seventh century.

Muhammad, The Angel Gabriel, Moses, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Jesus Christ was doing his Father's work in the Temple when he was a child.
I never knew what a large portion of the world believes occurred in this one single location in the whole World. It is truly awe inspiring!!

go mid east December 1st, 2005, 12:42 AM A nice building, but what makes it so striking is that most of the rest of the old city seems drab, color-wise (brown and tan) in comparison...

ikops August 23rd, 2010, 04:00 PM I guess it has a lot of history attached to it, but looking upon it as a building I give it an 8/10. The dome is just too much for me. The base looks very interesting though.
