@renell :rant:

Yes this building is what I refer to as the "two toned piece of crap". Think about it. If you look at the original model shown and the end result, its a disaster. If it was one toned, then it would be nice. This two toned crapiness is the result of some stupid Vancouver Cityhall decision to change the glass in the upper floors from dark blue to transparent in order to comply to some delusional desire to create the illusion that the building does not exists as seen from Queen E Park. Most Vancouver forumers dislike the way this building turned out and would get excited over any rumour that suggests that the windows in the upper floors to be changed.
:bleep:

Other than the colour, here are additional flaws. Architecturally, its shape is very generic. Floorplan wise, its very inflexible for you can only have a maximum of two bedrooms and two bathrooms, one bathroom being outside the bedroom which kinda sucks. Pricewise, its cheap(at maximum of $899,000 Cdn) for its class, considering its quality and location is really bad for its target market. And despite the condo boom in Vcr and Coal Harbour condos selling for as much as 5 million dollars, One Wall took forever to sell out, if it has already. Heightwise, it doesn't even break the 500 foot barrier. Afterall, lightpipes don't count. Besides, to be the "tallest" in a city that is simply not known and have no desire to have really tall skyscrapers is pathetic. Its pretty overrated by the local news media and how it won the 2001 Skyscrapers.com Award is what even a Senior Editor described as "something out of the X-files"!

Oaronuviss
March 9th, 2003, 08:50 AM
I don't know... looks pretty sweet to most people. That's all that matters?

I don't care about the quality... I'm looking at it for it's skyscraperness material. ;)

I think the top layers of glass are awesome... especially in the last picture... I've never seen anything like it.
$899,000 is actually quite expensive. lol. I mean, it's not EXPENSIVE for an area of 5 million dollar homes, but it's still mighty up there in price. But honestly, the building itself is amazing.

queetz
March 9th, 2003, 09:22 AM
Is the building amazing because of some feat engineering or architectural breakthrough or is it amazing because it is located in Vancouver/Canada? Please elaborate the architectural uniqueness of this building to this Vancouverite for I must be missing something. And in the game of high end residential real estate, where condos in, say Trump World Tower which was also built in 2001, fetches price tags of tens of millions of US dollars, do you think $899,000 Cdn is expensive? Maybe for us but for a building to say it has Vancouver's most prestigious addess....c'mon! And as for skyscraperness, its hardly a standout in the Vancouver's really boring table top skyline!
:baaa:

MichiganDude
March 9th, 2003, 09:40 AM
To be honest... this building is very generic... I mean they build buildings like that all the time so there really is nothing too special about it... sorry.

Also, the upper windows make it look cheap, with the blinds showing and all... And the shape resembles some Asian buildings like the Bank of China in Shanghai..

ewh1
March 9th, 2003, 10:13 AM
This is definatly not the best work ive seen. The top part of it looks cheap and ugly. If they would have done it according to plans it would have looked cool. Sorta like Polished Chrome

Oaronuviss
March 9th, 2003, 11:08 PM
I've never seen anything like it... I mean, there are some buildings that look similar, but not too many. This building may not be all elegant and all that jazz, but the looks of it are quite appealing. Obviously Vancouverites aren't going to like it... but for people around the world, I'm sure they like it...
The majority like it so far!

Pretty damn good score so far.

Well then, let me show you many buildings that look like it. The heights and overall shape may differ but you get the idea.....

Elliptical shaped buildings with very similar dimensions

Other elliptical shaped buildings

As soon as I find more, and I know there are some more since I've seen them but just can't remember the names, I shall post them here. :guns1:

And I still don't find anything appealing when you see how bad the flow was since the smooth lower floor dark blue opaque glass is ruined by the window blind infested upper floor transparent glass. :ohno:

Those pics you posted were distant cousins of that building. It's still unique as hell.

The below floors of that blue glass are amazing, and how it changes to the clear windows is un-seen.

If it stuck to all blue glass it would be beautiful, but not as unique.
This is my opinion remember.
:gunz:

queetz
March 10th, 2003, 01:58 AM
Those are not distant cousins. Distant cousins does not exist in the world of architecture. Besides, by your logic, one would say that the worldisround.com photo is the big sister since its from the same architect and the building will be taller. Remember, the building wasn't suppose to be two toned. It was only two toned because the Vcr Cityhall are jerks. The intent has been one toned and it would have been beautiful if it was one toned. But its not, therefore its not beautiful! :D

Oaronuviss
March 10th, 2003, 02:00 AM
That's your opinion.
I really don't want to argue about this because it's not worth it, and pointless.

It's a beautiful design, and many architects that build buildings stick to the same design or similar designs. OR completely different.

queetz
March 10th, 2003, 02:04 AM
Honestly, Oaronuviss, do you really like this building because of its design or because its in Vancouver/Canada? Your defense of ths building is the only reason why I am arguing because lots of people gave their opinions but did not react the way you do. As a matter of fact, I was responding to renell. :ohno:

Oaronuviss
March 10th, 2003, 02:11 AM
How did I respond? I said I liked it... I personally like the design. Is that a crime? Most people said the same?

lol because it's in Vancouver? I live in WINDSOR ONTARIO. I've NEVER even been to Vancouver. Why would I judge a building on it's situation on earth?

I don't personally like certain asian countries or middle eastern countries, but I like some of their building designs?

:bash: :bash:
:? :? :? :? :? :?

queetz
March 10th, 2003, 02:15 AM
No, you were contradicting what I replied to renell. You already gave your opinions on the first post but when I gave mine, which was the first negative post about this building, then you replied towards it. And you may not have been to Vancouver but the building is in Canada. Anyway, I hope you don't take this personally. I've dealt with defensive delusional hippie Vancouverites in SSP way too often. ;)

8.5/10. I really like this building. The two tone glass makes it look a little taller than it actually is in pictures, as you can get a sense of how high the people and objects in the windows really are.

Not bad, but if Vancouver puts up another glass, green, or blue building I'm going to puke. If this was the 1930's, and they were putting up art deco, art moderne, or Canadian chateau style I could deal with it, but this addiction is beyond monotony. It is now in nauseating territory.
