Calicut (Kozhikode) has a low cost of living. The rates of apartments on the South Beach Road is only 1550 / sq.ft while the same kind is 2600 in Cochin. IF you have the money to live happily ever after getting a flat in Calicut is best. It has an International airport, Very near to the City center 1.5 kms to the Railway Station and Bus Station. What else can you want. West hill is a good residential area. A few softare companies are looking for places around in Kozhikode.....Real Estate is cheap. :runaway:

@ Arun - Great pics, buddy! That's quite a collection there! :)

@ Sun - Kozhikode has been the most underrated of the 3 metros in Kerala. It has a large, traditionally affluent population and is culturally very rich as well. Kozhikode also boasts such as institutions as the NIT-K and IIM-K. :)

Kozhikode airport waits for international status

Kozhikode (Kerala): The Kozhikode airport - one of the three in Kerala - is waiting to get the status of an international airport.

P.V. Abdul Wahab, a Rajya Sabha member and a non-resident businessman, told a television channel here that it was for the central government to declare the airport an international airport.

"We expect that when the current Rs.2 billion infrastructure work is completed in June, the centre will declare it an international airport. The state government and the MPs from here have to exert more pressure on the centre to make this a reality," said Wahab, who is also a member of the Civil Aviation Consultation Committee from the Rajya Sabha.

"The moment Kozhikode airport is given full-fledged international status, all international carriers operating to the other two airports in Kerala will be forced to operate (in Kozhikode)," said Wahab.

Kozhikode airport serves the districts of Malappuram, Kozhikode and Kannur from where close to 30 percent of all non-resident Keralites hail. Some two million people from Kerala live in the Middle East.

^^ - Good news, Calicut services the northern districts of Kerala which have a very large NRI population. The introduction of new flights will spare people here the trouble of travelling to another airport. Also, a new airport is being planned in nearby Kannur. :)

Kozhikode airport gets international status

By Indo Asian News Service

New Delhi, Feb 1 (IANS) The Indian government Wednesday gave 'full fledged international status' to the Kozhikode airport, a decision that was welcomed in northern Kerala that has a sizeable number of expatriates in the Gulf.

'Some international flights are already operating from Calicut (Kozhikode). Granting it full fledged international status will enable the strengthening of facilities there,' Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told reporters here after a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Rajya Sabha MP P.V. Abdul Wahab, who has been pushing for international status for Kozhikode, said he was thrilled.

'I see this as a momentous decision for which north Kerala has long been waiting for. This is certainly going to take the airport to newer heights,' Wahab, a member of parliament's consultative committee for the civil aviation ministry, told IANS in Kozhikode.

Kerala will now be the only state in the country to have three international airports. The other two are at capital Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi.

Kozhikode airport serves Malappuram, Kozhikode and Kannur districts, which accounts for close to 30 percent of the two million non-resident Keralites in the Middle East.

Air India and Indian Airlines operate flights from here but SriLankan airline is the only foreign carrier that serves the airport.

An Rs.2 billion ($45 million) modernisation project is underway at the airport and could be completed by June.

Kozhikode Dreamcity project gets nod for land

ECONOMY BUREAU
Posted online: Thursday, February 02, 2006 at 0037 hours IST

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB 1: The Kerala Cabinet, which met here in Chief Minister Oommen Chandy's absence, has cleared land transfer for Dreamcity in Kozhikode. The ecotourism infrastructure venture is among the 10 projects the Chandy government had placed on fasttrack.
Facilitation of land, which had been holding up the project, had the government nod, Vakkom Purushottaman, Kerala finance minister, holding the Chief Minister's charge told reporters, after a meeting of the Cabinet on Wednesday.

Mr Chandy, convalescing after a fracture and hip surgery during his trip to Davos at the World Economic Forum, is expected back in Kerala Capital on Thursday.

The Kozhikode Dreamcity project, intended to include north Kerala in the state's tourism strides, is planned as a comprehensive infrastructure facility including an amusement theme park and family entertainment centre.

Nick, i am also unsure about the exact place of this park. Only clue is that Government is acquiring land held by the Kerala Water Authority. So, I am guessing this place is somewhere close to a water source :bash: and probably it will be a water amusement park..

In gold's own country - a sign of the times

By Malavika Vettath, Indo-Asian News Service

Kozhikode, Feb 12 (IANS) This port town, formerly known as Calicut, one of the three important cities of Kerala, so successfully marketed by copywriters as God's Own Country, can now very well be called 'gold's own country'. This ancient centre of trade is now sprouting gold malls by the day.

Whether it is the Alukkas gold mall or the Malabar Gold Palace, they are four to five storeys loaded with nothing but the yellow metal! This sudden love of gold can be attributed to the increase in the spending power of the average Malayali.

The roots of this phenomenon lie across the seas...in the Gulf, with non-resident Keralites (NRKs) pumping in the greenbacks. The Gulf sure has the Midas touch!

Calicut-Gulf links are nothing new as this port town is historically known as a centre of foreign trade. Arab and Chinese accounts of the Malabar Coast tell us of spices, coconut and areca nuts being exported right from the 10th century.

Ibn Battuta, the famous 14th century Arab traveller, in his records says that ships from countries such as China, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), the Maldives and Yemen docked at Calicut harbour. Then of course, Vasco da Gama from Portugal put Calicut on the international historical map by setting foot at the Kappad beach here. This is said to have set the ball rolling for Indo-Western trade links.

Known as the traditional capital of north Kerala, Kozhikode is located around 224 km from Kochi and 435 km from state capital Thiruvananthapuram. It is a city where nature, tradition and modernity co-exist in absolute harmony.

The socio-religious fabric of the city is an interesting mix with several threads woven into it. Apart from the Hindu majority, there is a huge Muslim population and a considerably large Christian population as well. Christians in the region take pride in calling themselves disciples of St. Thomas who is believed to have spread the gospel in Kerala prior to the beginnings of the Vatican influence.

Despite their distinctiveness, Christians seem to have assimilated well with the culture of the land. One perceives a lot of adaptation and adoption even in their religious rituals. On the other hand, the opposite seems to have taken place in the case of Muslims. The growing Gulf influence is seen in the replacement of their indigenous dressing style with the burkha, or the veil, alien to Kerala even a decade ago.

History and society apart, what does Kozhikode hold for an average tourist? Kozhikode is not exactly a tourist's haven of the likes of Goa... But this city is sure to charm you in its own quiet ways.

There are a few ancient temples nestled right in the heart of the city. Important among them is the Thali Shiva temple. It is said to have been in existence right in 1200 AD. Built in traditional Kerala architectural style, it has intricate stone carvings and beautiful mural paintings adorning its walls and ceiling.

Being a melting pot of religions, the city is dotted with small quaint churches. The old cathedral linked to the St. Joseph's High School near the beach is well worth a visit. Walking down the aisle of a church with the sounds of the sea waves forming the background score is a unique experience altogether.

Kerala is known for lamps and other articles made of bell metal. And who doesn't like to pick up a few curios! Oyitty Road, next to the railway station is dedicated to bell metal wares. And if you are an antique lover, this is definitely the place for you. Traditional lamps known as vilakkus and wide, shallow cauldrons called urulis, now known as the symbols of Kerala's past, are displayed prominently.

Every first timer in Calicut makes it a point to visit the famous Kappad beach where one can exclaim, 'This is where Vasco da Gama stood in 1498!'

One should not miss the beach that is surrounded by graceful coconut palms. The old lighthouse here and the two crumbling piers, each more than a hundred years old, evoke myriad images of years gone by. Come evening and the number of couples sitting at the beachside will tell you that it still is the favourite dating spot of the city!

Watching the sun take its daily dip into the sea is by far the best way to end your evenings in the city of Calicut. And of course, there's always gold-shopping to do!

Centre to consider request for flyover at Thondayad

Staff Reporter

Minister says works amounting to Rs.72 crores sanctioned

KOZHIKODE: Union Minister of State for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways K.H. Muniyappa has said that the Centre will consider the request for constructing a flyover at Thondayad junction, which is considered an accident-prone area in the city.

Public Works Department Minister M.K. Muneer and Kozhikode MP Veerendrakumar had earlier put forward such a demand.

The Minister was speaking after inaugurating the phase-III of the Calicut bypass from Pantheerankavu to Thondayad on National Highway 17 and laying the foundation stone for work on the fourth phase of the bypass at Thondayad on Sunday.

The Minister later told mediapersons that at present a project envisaging a two-lane flyover had been submitted by the PWD. "But we are thinking of a four-lane flyover," he said.

AIIMS status sought for Kozhikode Medical College

Staff Reporter

http://www.hindu.com/2006/03/15/stories/2006031504670300.htm

Delegation to meet Chief Minister in this regard

Kozhikode: A delegation led by Kozhikode Mayor M. Bhaskaran and district panchayat president K.P. Kunhahamedkutty will meet Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and apprise him of the need to upgrade Kozhikode Medical College Hospital (MCH) to the status of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

They will submit him a copy of a resolution adopted at a special meeting of the representatives of local bodies, political parties and other organisations here on Tuesday afternoon.

The meeting was held in the backdrop of Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram announcing in Parliament last week that one of the medical colleges in the State would be raised to the status of the premier medical institute in New Delhi.

An action committee, comprising the Mayor as chairman and the district panchayat president as convener, was constituted at the meeting to pursue the issue.

District-level committees headed by the district panchayat chiefs will be formed in Kasaragod, Kannur, Malappuram, Wayanad and Palakkad.

Mr. Bhaskaran said the proposal of the State Government to award the special status to the medical college in Thiruvananthapuram was not justified since the State capital already had a good number of medical institutes such as the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology, Regional Cancer Centre and the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology.

The 250-acre MCH campus here has better clinical facilities than other than medical college in the State.

A 500-bed super-speciality complex is soon going to be a reality, he said.

The hospital catered to 30 to 35 per cent of the State's population.

The hospital attends to 1.5 lakh inpatients and five to six lakh outpatients annually, Mr. Bhaskaran said.

Taking part in the deliberations, Mr. Kunhahamedkutty said that a concerted effort from all including elected representatives was needed to bring the issue to the attention to the authorities concerned.

MCH Principal V. Geetha said that the people of North Kerala would immensely benefit if the project was be awarded to the medical college here. The medical college has excelled in its spheres of activity.

P.K. Sasidharan, president of the Alumni Association and a member of the faculty of General Medicine, said a centralised administration would increase the efficiency of the medical college. Kozhikode medical college treats 90 per cent of the patients in Kozhikode in spite of a number of private hospitals, he said.

Former Mayors Thottathil Raveendran, U.T. Rajan A. Sanakaran and O. Rajagopal demanded that the Government give priority to the Kozhikode MCH in this regard.

Calicut Chamber of Commerce president C.E. Chakkunny, Malabar Chamber of Commerce secretary, P.G. Anoop Narayanan and Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithy Kozhikode district secretary K. Hassan Koya pledged their support to the cause.

Thanks Sanju for your invitation. Will make it one day. Presently I am busy here. Hope you would shoot pictures of Malabar festival. And that from the helicopter too. At Rs. 1000 per head it is very very attractive offer since Deccan Aviation and King Rotors at Trivandrum are charging about Rs. 5000 per person.

BTW I had been to Calicut a couple of times. I had once drove from Kochi to Wayanad through Calicut. I had also came there for engg interview at REC, years back.

Marine Skycity Project For Kozhikode.
An Infrastucture Development Project

Kozhikode, a historical town, still retains the glory and charm of the bygone era. It has a hub of industrial and business activities that attract domestic and international trade. The city has some of the most important temples, mosques and churches that contain sculptures and paintings of very artistic order. The city is also endowed with art gallery, museums, planetarium, parks and beaches. With the natural beauty and prosperity of the town, Kozhikode is a place that attracts many tourists every year. However, as a befitting and progressive step in the development of the infrastructure of the city, M/s Yasoram Builders, Kochi, have designed a Marine Sky City cum Shopping complex along the Kozhikode beach. Though flyovers are common in the city, this type of modern and world - class Marine Sky city, apparently is a new concept that is sure to enhance the ever-growing trade and industry. The special features of this Marine Sky City are that it contains multi-storeyed shopping complexes, commercial hubs, residential buildings, entertainment and amusement centers, health clubs and health clinics, restaurants, hotels etc.

The Marine Sky City is designed to provide 8 meter wide road for two-way traffic. 4 meter wide car parking space near the shopping malls and 2 meter footpath for pedestrians in front of the shopping malls. The shopping complexes will be three storeyed and 8.4meter wide. The Marine Sky City will also provide 3meter wide walkway facing the sea for the public who can enjoy the enchanting beauty of the sea. All the buildings are planned to face the sea. The existing roads beneath the flyover will be retained as such and these will be connected to Marine Sky City via steps.

TECHNICAL ASPECTS

1. The length of the Marine Sky City will be 4.5km

2. The height of the Marine Sky City will be 7.5m from the ground level.

3. The width of the Marine Sky City will be 25.40m

A. 3m wide walkway and resting place facing the sea.

B. 8m wide road for vehicular traffic,

C. 4m wide space for car parking.

D. 2m wide footpath.

E. 8.40m wide space for the buildings.

BENEFITS TO THE PUBLIC

The uniqueness and utility of the project would certainly attract more business centers along the beachside. It would also attract locals, tourists and holiday makers alike, as they can enjoy the enthralling beauty of the Arabian sea from an elevated Marine Sky City. The congestion in the city will also be reduced to a large extent.

BENEFITS TO THE CORPORATION OF KOZHIKODE / STATE GOVERNMENT / CENTRAL GOVERNMENT

A. Since the buildings on the Marine Sky City will be registered in the name of the purchasers, the State Government will get stamp duty and registration fees.

B. The State Government will get added building tax from the owners of the buildings.

C. From the enhanced business activities, the State Government will also get added sales tax.

D. The Central Government will get added income tax, service tax etc from the business people

E. The Corporation of Kozhikode will be highly benefited by obtaining added property tax, professional tax etc. every six months from the building owners, professionals etc.

F. The Corporation of Kozhikode can also generate more employment opportunities for the youth.

G. Above all the Corporation of Kozhikode will also be benefited from promoting tourism through this unique Marine Sky City.

ABOUT THE NOVEL CONCEPT

Marine Sky City project proposed along the Kozhikode beach, will be the first of its kind not only in India but perhaps, in the world. This truly viable project is the brainchild of Mr. A.R.S. Vadhyar, Managing Partner and Chief Engineering Consultant, Yasoram Builders, Kochi who has earned a reputation in building constructions over a period of 39 years. The Sky City project connecting Cochin Shipyard to Edappally by-pass also designed by Mr. Vadhyar has been accepted in principle by the State Government and is in progress.

If this project comes out of the drawing board and gets executed , it will be a real boost for kozhikode. I'm a bit sceptic about these grand ideas when projects of even smaller scales don't even see the daylight.

Kozhikode, Jan 26 (IANS) Six high profile institutions in Kerala have come together to ensure that this north Kerala city becomes the next big IT destination in the state after Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi.

The core group working towards a cyber park in Kozhikode consists of the Malabar Chamber of Commerce (MCC), Indian Institute of Management-Kozhikode (IIM-K), National Institute of Technology (formerly Regional Engineering College-Kozhikode), Kerala Builders Forum, the IT Forum of Kozhikode and the Calicut Management Association.

The project has the backing of the state government, said P. Zakeer, MCC president and secretary of the Calicut IT initiative (CITI).

"We had a full-fledged discussion with the special IT team of the government led by IT secretary K. Jyothilal. Things are on the right track. The government is fully convinced that Kozhikode has the potential to become Kerala's latest IT destination," Zakeer told IANS.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, who handles the IT portfolio, last week came out with a draft IT policy and also stressed that the district would be promoted in a big way and infrastructure developed too.

Leading IT companies operating from IT hubs Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram and Infopark at Kochi have also expressed their support for the venture.

"IBS, US Technology and NeST have all assured us that they would be the first to set up operations as and when Cyber Park becomes a reality," said Zakeer.

"We are now looking for a 100 acre plot of land, hopefully near the airport. Since the state industries minister (Elamaram Karim) hails from Kozhikode, we are certain that things will move in the right direction and at a faster pace."

Also boosting chances of the project seeing light of day are the large number of NRIs from Kozhikode who would be only too willing to chip in with funds to ensure speedy take off.

This concerted effort by Government, academia and industry is quite creditable. :okay: I particularly applaud the way that firms based in Technopark and Infopark have come forward to the support the initiative.

Calicut & Kochi to host retail shows

Kochi, Sept 25: The Hyderabad-based business media firm, VIN Media, is organizing tradeshows and business sessions on technology adoption in Kochi and Calicut in November.
Being organised with an objective to showcase and educate small and medium retailers the advantages of technology adoption in streamlining retail business processes, cut costs and give better customer experience, the Retail Tech Shows are scheduled on November 15 and 16 in Calicut and November 24 and 25 in Kochi.
According to VIN Media, Not only that conventional retailing is declining, the small and medium retailers in Kerala, like their counterparts in other parts of the country, are also being challenged by large organised retailers setting up stores in all major cities and towns in the state. One of the proven survival strategies for small and medium retailers in this fiercely competitive retail business is adopting and using Information Technology to run their stores.
While big retailers in India have a strong IT backbone, Small and medium retailers are also realizing the importance IT and it advantages, feels Vinod Menon of VIN Media. IT is about enabling the retailer to serve his customers better and for customers, it's about getting faster, quality services and getting the fun out of shopping.
One of the favourable factors in adopting retail technology is availability of cost effective retail technology solutions developed by small technology companies in India. These companies have developed tailor retail solutions for the small and medium retailers. The commonly used retail technologies by retailer are point of sales machines & solutions, barcode solutions and retail software and related technologies.
For small and medium retailers to successfully adopt IT, it is essential that they investigate and understand IT and explore the right technology.

Natpac suggests steps for road development

By Our Staff Reporter
THE HINDU

KOZHIKODE, APRIL 11. A report on Road Development and Traffic Operation plan for Kozhikode city, prepared by the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (Natpac) in September 2004 and submitted to the City Corporation, has stressed that transportation and urban environment are linked with each other.

The study says that demand for transportation in Kozhikode has increased with urbanisation and increase in the number of motor vehicles plying on the roads. It also leads to traffic congestion on the roads, said N. Vijayakumar, Natpac team leader.

The resources for development at the disposal of the Corporation and other agencies are limited. So, in order to improve transportation facilities, compatibility should be maintained between the demand and supply of transport facilities within the town and environs.

Some of the improvement proposals include the shifting of existing bus stops to a minimum of 50 to 75 metres from the junction for smooth flow of traffic. The bus stops, which could be shifted are those at East Nadakkave on NH 212, MCC Bank on Kallayi Road, Pushpa Junction on Madhavan Nair Road, Chalappuram near the post office and Meenchanda on Bypass Road.

Setting up railing barriers and zebra crossings at Eranhipalam, East Nadakkave, MCC Bank, Pushpa junctions, guardrails at areas such as Malabar Christian College, Idiyankara HSS on Francis Road, West Nadakkave Government Girls High School are the other suggestions mentioned in the report.

Encroachments by roadside vendors at Palayam bus stand, English Church, I.G. Road, Bank Road-Mananchira footpath and Kallayi-Vattakinar Road should be avoided. The report stresses that the existing transportation facilities be utilised in an optimal manner.

A similar NATPAC study, `Comprehensive Traffic and Transportation Planning exercise,' was conducted in for Kozhikode in 1980-81.

The objective is to formulate short-term measures for traffic improvement and long-term road development plan.

The average journey speed with delay on National Highway 17, Indira Gandhi Road, Beach Road and Ram Mohan Road was found to be above 35 km an hour. It was between 30/34 km on the National Highway 212, Karaparamba-Kakkodi Road and Court Road.

On the arterial roads such as M.M. Ali Road, Pavamani Road, Malabar Christian College Road, YMCA Cross Road, Rajaji Road and Cherooty Road the journey speed during the peak hour was less than 20 km an hour.

Traffic volume

The analysis of traffic volume showed that of the 91,726 vehicles, more than 36 per cent were two-wheelers followed by cars and jeeps (22.4 per cent). Goods vehicles including goods autos comprised 16 per cent.

Crunch

Just like any other metros, civic authorities here are also facing the challenge to solve the acute space crunch in the city. Property boom and increase in vehicular population have contributed to this aspect.

Corporation officials say that property builders and real estates have been asked to comply with parking rules during construction.

However, the vertical growth of the city within its jurisdiction of 82 square kilometres is compelling officials to be sterner in dealing with the offenders.

Mandatory provision

"Commercial establishments have been asked to adhere to the mandatory provision of creating parking spaces for customers," says an official at the Town Planning Department.

Earlier, commercial establishments did not bother much about providing parking space to customers. Spaces for off-street and on-street parking were then readily available. Now the situation is totally different, they say.

Ground floors

Usually apartments stick to the provisions so as to market their units even if these are constructed is in the heart of the city. Ground floors are usually converted into parking spaces for all the allottees, he says.

However, officials admit that one of the major problems is the narrow roads in the city. Vehicular population alone cannot be sole factor to the space crunch in recent times. But it has to be mentioned that the rate of growth of vehicles is 12 per cent to 15 per cent in a decade. On an average there are 70 to 80 motor vehicles for every 1,000 person.

Density

Interestingly, the population density in the inner city area is 5,280 persons per sq.km. while it is 2,486 persons per sq.km. in the outer fringes of the city, as per the figures of the 2001 Census.

Average traffic

As per a study conducted in the city, the average daily traffic flow was 50,000 vehicles per day at Mankavu Junction-Arayadathupalam section of Mini Bypass and 15,000 vehicles on Francis Road. Peak-hour traffic varied at inner and intermediate city road sections.

High volume

High-traffic volume is exerting pressure on the narrow urban roads causing frequent congestions and accidents. Annual daily traffic in the range of about 20,000 to 55,000 passenger car units was observed in the inner city, 32,000 to 50,000 in intermediate city roads and 5,000 to 15,000 on roads in the periphery of the city.

Major junctions on Mavoor Road, Rajaji Road, Pottamal, Chevayur, Mankavu, Meenchanda , Karaparamba and Eranhipalam are experiencing parking problems.

Major corridors

Palayam, the urban section of NH 17, Francis Road, Railway Station Road, Mananchira and Pavamani Road are major parking demand corridors in the central part of the city. Shopping complexes and wholesale markets have generated more demand for on-street parking for passengers and goods vehicle at the market areas. At the same time the non-availability of off-street parking at residential and commercial areas leads to a frequent traffic blocks.

Suggestions have now come up to improve the inter-city traffic road corridors and intra-city traffic corridors. Apart from construction new roads and improving existing ones, Kozhikode Corporation is also taking steps to establish new bus terminals at West Hill, Medical College and Vellimadukunnu.

Master plan

As per the new master plan of the city road overbridges have been proposed at Bhatt Road and Fourth Gate. Likewise projects have been envisaged for mass transport system, area development scheme at Stadium Junction, Satellite Township at Kunnamangalam, restructuring the Palayam subway to pedestrian subway-cum-shopping mall and greening the arterial corridors.

Kozhikode Mayor M. Bhaskaran says that multi-level parking has become a necessity in view of the increasing demand for parking spaces in the city. Promotion of off-street parking will help reduce the congestion. Private land owners will be encouraged to offer facilities for off-street parking.

Construction of multi-storeyed parking lots at Muthalakulam, Palayam, Mananchira, Mankavu and Arayadathupalam and re-routing the buses would help in making more spaces in the city.

Developers

But most essentially property developers have to abide by the rules in making their own parking facilities.

Housing boom has immensely contributed to urbanisation in a big way in Kozhikode city, which accounts for over 40 per cent of the urban population in the district. Long-term measures have to be adopted with commercial establishments mushrooming in residential areas.

EVER SINCE Kozhikode began to shed its tag of an overgrown town and looked forward to being a metropolis in North Kerala, the civic authorities have been confronted with the problem of inadequate space for infrastructure development of the city.

But now a master plan for the city, drawn up last month, gives a glimmer of hope to the authorities concerned to utilise space in a pragmatic way, rationalise land use, strengthen transportation systems and chalk out new infrastructure development methods for future generation.

Corporation officials say that the focus is on regional spatial strategy, local development framework and development control. This involves greater attention to improve spatial qualities, socio-economic aspects, environmental awareness and urban governance.

Transport system

Transportation has been given due emphasis in the master plan, which includes developing inter-city traffic road corridors, intra-city traffic corridors, constructing new city roads and bus terminals, road over bridges and junctions. Improvements have been proposed in the railways and waterways.

One of the proposals is strengthening and widening the Madhavan Nair Road from Pushpa Junction to Pokkunnu and further extension to Pantheerankavu on National Highway Bypass and constructing a coastal highway from Kozhikode to Kochi.

Ambitious

Constructing an East-West Axis Road from Vellayil to Kunnamangalam via Malabar Christian College Cross Road-Chevayur and Mayanad is another ambitious project for streamlining intra-city traffic corridors.

Bus terminals have been proposed at West Hill, Medical College and Vellimadukunnu in the master plan. Other road transport development projects envisaged are introducing mass transport system, restructuring existing subways, greening arterial corridors and re-routing bus services in the city.

Drainage

Completion of the Kozhikode Drainage Project has also been given importance with the rise in households in the city in the last several years.

This includes laying of pipeline for about 100 km, a treatment plant at Karimanappalam using suitable technology and setting up four major pumping stations.

Reconstructing existing drain on the sides of main roads in town, covering them with RCC slabs to serve as footpaths, constructing sewer-cum-storm water drains and lining the natural drainage canals with cement concrete have been proposed.

Water resources

Watershed management; rainwater harvesting and localised water supply schemes are other projects. However, officials stress on the need for maintaining and conserving water sources such as tanks, ponds and dug wells existing in various regions.

Only with the completion of the multi-crore Japan Bank for International Cooperation -aided drinking water project can Kozhikode city hope to solve the acute drinking water shortage, they say.

Power supply

Another aspect is improving the existing power situation in the city. Priority has been given to constructing a ring main system of 29 11-kV rings and sub rings with 64 feeders and a new sub-station at Vellayil with 200 distribution transformers. Modifying the 220-kV substation at Nallalam, enhancing the capacity of 110- kV Sub-station at Vydyuthi Bhavan and converting the 110-kV single circuit line from Chevayur to 110 kV Substation at West Hill to 110-kV double circuit line are new proposals in the master plan.

Regarding waste management, standalone treatment plants on the beach and sides of Canoly Canal have been proposed.

Volunteers

Utilising the services of the Kudumbasree volunteers in the door-to-door collection of garbage and operating the treatment plant at Njeliyanparamba to its full capacity have also been drawn up for making improvements in this category.

Another major proposal is implementation of a Shelter Upgradation Programme for 79 identified slum areas in four phases.

Shelter upgradation

Three slum areas will be improved in the first two years, 23 in the next five years, 30 in another five years and 23 in the last phase of the programme.

Projects on tapping the tourism potential of the city, improving urban governance through e- initiatives, preparing a contour map for sewerage system and flood control and defining and proclaiming green belts have also been included in the master plan for the development of Kozhikode.

Sathyam Cinemas, which has two multiplexes in Chennai and was the first theatre in the country to deploy Hollywood-standard digital cinema, are also expanding. Sathyam will add 18 more screens (three multiplexes) across Chennai and Cochin with an investment of Rs 30 crore in 2008. The company is also scouting for four-five more sites in Chennai besides venturing into cities like Madurai, Coimbatore, Trichy and Calicut.
Albeit Kiran Reddy, managing director, Sathyam Cinemas, believes that “content will always have the upper hand”. He also believes that the synergies and savings are essentially local. For expansion across cities means setting up separate offices and replicating media costs. “Globally too, the best local theatre, like a restaurant, tends to have the highest collections and it doesn’t matter if it is part of a chain,” he says.

In north Kerala, The National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C) is a hot-favourite of companies coming down to Kerala for campus recruitment. The placement season of the NIT-C starts in July and will go on till November and may sometimes be extended by a couple of months.

The campus placement is conducted almost continuously at the Institute, points out S.S. Gokhale, Director of NIT-C. "This year the placement is going to be better than last time. It is premature to disclose the statistics of placement of this year at this stage," says T.V. Gopalan, professor and head of Training, Placement and Linkage Department of NIT-C.

High salaries

Last year, three NIT-C students hit the jackpot with the highest offer of Rs 5.5 lakhs made by Trilogy Limited, U.S., a multinational company (MNC). The salary offered on the campus was higher than the `highest' salary of Rs. 4.25 lakhs that was offered the previous year.

A couple of B.Tech. students accepted the second highest offer of Rs. 4 lakhs per annum. "The companies coming in were so many and the students so few that we were forced to refuse some companies," observes Dr. Gopalan.

Most of the companies were IT firms but 35 per cent were from the core sectors. Of 57 students in the Civil Engineering stream, 33 got placements last year. Four students of Civil Engineering and two from the Mechanical Department were absorbed by Larsen and Turbo ECC, with an annual salary package of Rs. 3 lakhs each. The average salary was Rs. 2.5 lakhs and the lowest was Rs. 1.8 lakhs.

Hot property destinations in 2007
From MonceyControl.com

A booming economy, easy availability of loans and plenty of projects to choose from are perhaps some of the reasons for the property market shining bright. Year 2006 has come to an end and if you're waiting for the right time to buy some nice cozy place under the sun, Moneycontrol gives you a lowdown on the areas across the country that hold the most promise and the reasons as to why they hold high growth potential.

According to Sajeet Narain, Managing Director, 'Narains Corp' International Properties, all Tier I cities will continue to remain a hot favourite in 2007 too thanks to the influx of foreign fund, multinational companies, FDI, better infrastructure among others.

But then if Tier I cities are out of your reach you could consider investing in the surrounding locations. Adds Narain, "A good place to invest in any Tier I city, is the location surrounding the city and the suburbs, as these areas historically have been in demand in most developing international cities.

IT Park: Steps on to identify land
Saturday February 3 2007 12:15 IST
KOZHIKODE: The Revenue Department has suggested land at Valayanad (Mankavu) and Nellikkode villages in the city for establishing the proposed IT park.

State IT secretary K.R. Jyothilal told Express on Friday that these two proposals have been moved to the office of the Chief Minister the other day.

“We have also sought another stretch of land for better selection. government wants to acquire at least 25 acres of land in a single block for the park. A final decision on the location of the park will be taken after consultations with people’s representatives from the region,” he said.

Additional District Magistrate P. Balan, who is holding the charge of Kozhikode district collector, submitted the proposals to the IT Department on the day of collectors’ conference.

Considering the infrastructure shortcomings of Kozhikode, govt plans to house the park within the city or the city region. The KSIDC growth centres at Balussery and Panakkad (Malappuram), which are yet to find takers among investors, have also been suggested for the project.

“Distance of these places from Kozhikode may dampen investors. At the initial stage of IT development at Kozhikode, we have to groom facilities within or near the city. Hence, KSIDC-owned locations can be considered at a later phase.”

Jyothilal said several models have been suggested for developing the park. Some companies want to buy land and develop their own facility, while others, particularly MNCs, want plug-and-play facility.

Technopark model is under active consideration, as that would require the least gestation period. If the Kozhikode IT Park is planned on the Technopark platform, government can soon go ahead with further steps after the land acquisition.

Several companies operating in Technopark has sought premises in Kozhikode. The park will also benefit IT enterprises born in Kozhikode.

Jyothilal said connectivity with other IT hubs in South India will emerge as a deciding factor for Kozhikode.

Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan has asked all airlines to explore chances of operating services connecting Kozhikode, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.

Officials visit sites for city’s IT parkSunday February 18 2007 11:49 IST
KOZHIKODE: IT additional secretary KR Jyothilal and IT advisor Joseph Mathew on Saturday visited the sites identified by the government to set up IT park in Kozhikode.

The officials visited the sites at Nellur and on Bypass to assess the scope for developing infrastructure required for the park.

The officials were in the city to take part in a workshop by the Department of Information Technology. The opinion evolved at the workshop, which was organised to gather people’s opinion of on draft IT policy, was positive towards the efforts to set up IT hubs in the state.

Similar workshops have already been held at Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.

The participants at the workshop called for setting up an IT park in Kozhikode. They also suggested an IT forensic cell to prevent crime in IT sector.

I have been following this forum for a while and it gives me great pleasure to see such development happening in my home state. I represent a retailing firm based in South Kerala and which is loooking at entering the Calicut market by rental/lease/buying around 10,000 square feet area of space in an area which has good frontage and amicable parking facilities. This need not be on Mavoor road but could be on one of the arterial roads developing rapidly now. Could people who are more familiar with the city give me leads for the same here?

hi abhi
if u r looking for a space other than mavoor road,i think YMCA cross road will be a good option..its one of the booming areas in calicut, and one more option is cherooty road..u can call it calicuts commercial street as in bangalore with all branded showrooms, red cross road is also a good option its near to cherooty road and this road leads to the beach road..its really posh over there with all state of art buildings, restaurants etc if u are looking for a posh residential area to set up ur retail store then golf link road will be a good option which is very near to mavoor road and medical college...anther option for a posh residential area will be bilathikulam which is near to eranjipalam jn, all afluent calicutites live in thease areas,u can also check malaparamba,on bangalore road..it is going to be costly since this is going to be a bypass jn and a fly over is goin to come over there whithin a few years....then other costliar options are nadakavu, west hill, ram mohan road, pavamani road, chalappuram etc YMCA cross road is also costly with sky high land rates..thats it,if u want more information just leave a private messege in my mail box...

Government urged to stabilise construction sector

Special Correspondent

KOZHIKODE: The Kerala Builders Association (KBA) has said the building sector in the State is on the verge of collapse. The association said it would resort to agitations if the Government failed to change its policies and bail out the construction sector.

M.D. Jairaj, president, and Sani Francis, general secretary, said here on Saturday that the KBA would organise a dharna in front of the Kanayannur taluk office on Monday.

Making out a strong case for Government action, KBA said the construction sector provided direct employment to nearly 3.5 lakh workers and indirect employment to another 2.5 million. It also disbursed Rs.7 crore as daily wages. "The construction sector should be declared an industry so that it will be eligible for several concessions and benefits available to industries," said association spokespersons.

The KBA sought comprehensive master plans for each district within two years on the basis of the development needs for the next 50 years. An expert committee comprising architects, town planners and builders should draw up the plan. The KBA also said the plans for Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode should be finalised within six months considering the commercial importance of the cities.
