Shizuoka City and Shimizu City are twin cities. Actually they are tightly connected and it's vert difficult to separate them to each other. Shizuoka University was former Shizuoka Highschool before WWII. It was a very perstigeous school. Former Prime Minister Nakasone Yasuhiro is its alma mater.
If you are bike riders you might be interested in Hamamatsu City. Yamaha and Honda have their headquarters in Hamamatsu City, which is also called Enshu chihou. There are several other racing facilities near there.
I go last august in a town called: Izunagaoka.

Hi Ookido,
Actually there's no Shimizu city any more, it merged with Shizuoka in 2003 being the latter the surviving city. With the consolidation, now Shizuoka's population is over 700.000.
Hamamatsu has also gone through a consolidation process, being now home to more than 800.000 people. I've always been amazed by Hamamatsu's entrepeneurship, it's a real economic powerhouse. The "Detroit of bikes" is home to Suzuki Motor, Yamaha Motor and was the birthplace of Honda motor (now HQed in Tokyo), that is the world's 3 largest bike manufacturers! Not bad for a medium-sized city.
In music instruments, it may be number 1 as well: Yamaha, Roland and Kawai are based in the city.
