swerveut December 26th, 2005, 03:51 AM There isnt one way to capture the soul of Karachi. This city with a fast paced lifestyle has all kinds of moods and people who enjoy all kinds of recreation. But one thing that they love to do a lot is shopping. And the best place to find shoppers is Tariq Road: the hub of Karachi's shopping activities since decades, this street has loads of shops and shopping malls from the old ones:

alam January 25th, 2006, 04:33 PM I would say those are some real life pics.... but I have to admit, the once flourishing city now looks like its in ruins...lets be honest
UnitedPakistan January 25th, 2006, 04:52 PM The city just looks like that because of construction and improper cleaning methods.
cntower January 25th, 2006, 07:08 PM It's a huge metropolis in the developing world; what do people expect? New York?
If Karachi is in ruins then Baghdad is hell. It's not in ruins it's just hasn't had a decent City Government until now and the feds have been ignoring this city for decades. Only now has it been getting the attention it deserves.
asfar001 January 25th, 2006, 10:20 PM i agree with UP ... i just talked to my father in pakistan yesterday who came back home (islamabad) after spnding 2 mths in karachi....even he says karachi has become soooo much better then what it used to be and he also said everything is like dugup everywhere because the whole city is like as if its underconstruction.
swerveut January 26th, 2006, 02:09 AM thanks for sharing those pictures Fahadkhan, really appreciate it.
wow! MT Khan renovation work sure is taking long! It has been under the works since last summer!
Also, if somebody could photograph the progress of Dolmen City and other projects, it would be awesome.
For images and some insight into Karachi's past, visit www.historickarachi.com (still under development)
FK January 26th, 2006, 06:41 AM ^ Thanks mate, plus I dont know if you know the details on the M.T Khan project but it looked like they are also constructing a small Flyover near the M.T Khan & Mai Kolachi Intersections .. I mean i could see the pillars going up but it looked like a small site for a flyover.
swerveut January 26th, 2006, 07:04 AM well, last summer I had an internship over at the PIDC and I live in DHA, so just to make my route more entertaining every evening I got off work, I would go by the MT Khan rd over to the Jinnah Bridge, circle around, get back on to Mai Kolachee, then take a twisted route back home.
They were starting to develop the MT Khan back then, and the side shoulders had been widened and it seemed like some sort of flyover was being made there too, but I wasnt certain cause the area was too narrow. So mebbe they probably are making a flyover which is taking it so long.
FK January 26th, 2006, 08:42 AM Well if thats the case then they are pretty damn slow, not even the pillars are completed, I could just see the "Frame" of the pillars (not the concrete), and its a one track at this moment, the widening hasnt been completed so its shitty.
swerveut January 26th, 2006, 10:11 AM Even the widening is not complete yet?! that's pretty pathetic. The CDGK needs to get their horses moving! or whatever outdated machinery is that they are using
pakboy January 26th, 2006, 07:12 PM well it looks like theres too much traffic on mt khan road to work fast, they need to close the road for a week or 2 and get full construction going at full pace.
wigo January 26th, 2006, 07:39 PM Wonderful city and wonderfol pics, a minor problem is that there are some places do need good plantation

Pleasant additions on Karachi’s humble recreational map are always welcomed by the masses. One such addition is the new Beach Park that has recently been opened to the public. This park is a breath of fresh air for the entertainment starved people of the metropolitan city and is one of a kind in terms of construction and location.
The work on the development of Karachi Sea View was started a few years ago and it’s heartening to see that positive results are emerging albeit on a comparatively slow pace. The park, which is a part of a mega project that is still in its infancy, may lay the framework for several other parks in the city. However, it’s not devoid of some blemishes. But first the plus points.
The park has a huge covered area and can accomodate a large number of visitors. It has a very strong management working for it and staff can be seen working diligently to keep the park clean. Both covered and uncovered benches are made from quality material and provides for an enjoyable view of the sea and the open sky. Children will be extremely delighted to see the kind of swings, which are very rare in this city. Two life-size dinosaurs that stand in the middle are the centre of attraction in the park. The theme colour of brown matches the theme colour of the city as many cultural and historical buildings here are brown in colour.
The lighting deserves a special mention. The park is well lit with heavy-duty bulbs, arena vision lights, and the light towers together richly dotting the covered area. One can also see sharp and beautiful flower spawning all over the park. There are also few horses available for rides. The dustbins have also being placed near every sitting area in order to keep a check on the park’s cleanliness, only if people consider the poor thing worthy of use.
Now the downers. One visitor was not very happy with the park. She said that although it’s a good idea to have a spot near the beach, only if people can easily enjoy it. “The area is quite extensive and I admit that it is very well made but there is nothing much to do here. We heard a lot about the opening of new spot, but other than the large piece of land with few fountains, benches, swings, and flowers there is nothing else. It doesn’t fit the definition of the recreation spot. Also the poor class cannot afford the entry fee, which is Rs10 per person. I have seen many families with more than five members taking their children back from the entrance gate after inquiring about the entry fee”. Now this is sad. Spots like this should aim at the masses and should allow at least children without any entry fee.
Another upset visitor said that the park is not well located because this area is a hub for many oil tankers. The tanker drivers pose a threat to the security. He says that when Play Land was set up in the same area, it was very nice and clean in the beginning, but after few years it was in a pathetic state. The same can be said about this park if the authorities do not keep track of the cleanliness and security. “There were many security concerns in Play Land and the place was not suitable for families, especially women. This park is in the same area and I will never advise women to come alone in the park.”
Despite some major concerns, the Beach Park has garnered a significant chunk of attention from the people of Karachi. It only depends on the kind of management that works to maintain its present reputation against all odds.

Nice pics swerveut.
mardan February 6th, 2006, 06:57 PM sorry i misinterpretted, thanks for the pictures, what that construction going on in second last pictures with all these tankers stuff.
swerveut February 7th, 2006, 02:22 AM The construction is for some random apartment complex in the sea-view area.
The tankers are just parked all over the place because KPT is too busy building water fountains and Port Towers to be able to provide them with a decent parking area. Therefore, millions of tankers just spill out all over the neighbourhood from the Karachi Port and dirty a huge area parking wherever they please.
UnitedPakistan February 7th, 2006, 05:04 AM Blame the Karachi government. I dont like this administration in Karachi at the moment. I liked the other Nazim better
swerveut February 7th, 2006, 06:13 AM Blame the Karachi government. I dont like this administration in Karachi at the moment. I liked the other Nazim better
I dont think the CDGK is responsible for the KPT. The Karachi Port Trust has its own vast funding sources, not to mention income from the port. Instead of putting in 200 million dollars or so in that port fountain, they could have easily built three or four huge parking lots for those millions of tankers in half the amount of money. That is exactly why none of the Karachiites really like the port fountain even though it is an awesome cosmetic enhancement to the beach and the city.
You simply cannot look away from the main problems and try to cover them up with makeup so they appear nice. You gotta solve them.
UnitedPakistan February 7th, 2006, 06:27 AM CDGK provides guidance and funds to the KPT I believe? Isnt KPT within their juristiction? This is something we need to research...
I have looked at google map images of Karachi and the port looks really inefficient at this moment. They could enhance the infastructure so much but instead they give us a port fountain which wont even help raise Karachi's image or even satisfy the people.
Rkhan February 7th, 2006, 07:44 AM I believe KPT does nto come under CDGK. and to be honest UP, i seriously feel that the new Nazim is much better than Althought the old nazim did a pretty good job as well but the new nazim has taken upon somethings pretty fast. lets give him atleast a year to a year and a half to better the city. cuz a lot of projects that are intiated should be done by then and then we can REALLY tell if the guy has done a good job.
UnitedPakistan February 9th, 2006, 03:59 AM Sorry guys I wasnt here and I couldnt moderate the section.
Rkhan can we confirm that KPT works independently?
Harkeb February 9th, 2006, 07:06 AM Sorry, but Karachi doesnt look impressive for a city of 14 million. Perhaps it will see more spectacular growth with Pakistan's current booming economy.
Rkhan February 9th, 2006, 07:15 AM Sorry, but Karachi doesnt look impressive for a city of 14 million. Perhaps it will see more spectacular growth with Pakistan's current booming economy.
i agree with you. you expect a city of 12m peopel to be a little btter than this but there are a lot of factors why its not that impressive. during late 80's to 90's there was almost NO progress in karachi. the city was pretty much torn apart due to corruption and of some political figures. but things have changed quite a lot since 2000. the bits of good that you see in karachi have taken place over the last few years.
if things keep moving the way they are right now.. you might be able to see a huge change in about 10 years time.
Shanster February 10th, 2006, 12:30 AM I agree with RKhan. Let's keep thing civilized and have respect for everybody. It's ok to take pride but no need to make fun of others.
UnitedPakistan February 10th, 2006, 12:42 AM Everyone please note that any further flaming will result in a brig.
cntower February 10th, 2006, 01:25 AM It's not New York...but many people don't know about Karachi they think it's still all mudhuts and dirt roads...
It surprises many...of course it could be better and will be better!

This one is nice. interesting thing is, it does not look 13F till you count them. :). I recon the half floor on top is a cafeteria or restaurant.
swerveut February 11th, 2006, 01:23 AM ^^ 14 floors is not a big number for Karachi anymore. There are a lot of buildings that are higher than that. Therefore, this building doesnt really stand out in the skyline anymore. Its just more known for its unique hexagonal shape and the one-time revolving restaurant it used to have at its top (dunno if its there anymore).

In the second night time shot, you can see two eras of Karachi's history: the British era Napier Barracks in the foreground, and the modern buildings on Shahrah-e-Faisal towards the right side. Awesome nighttime shots!

swerveut March 29th, 2006, 08:43 AM these are not yet before and after photos. The CDGK is performing nominal cleaning of the Empress market (see better picture in the Karachi progress thread), but the proper restoration on Empress market can only be achieved when all the wholesalers are relocated somewhere else (like was done with old sabzimandi), and the area is completely cleared of encroachers and minibuses.
If you wish to discuss the Empress market further, please check out the Karachi: Progress and Updates thread.

ahadhayat11 April 3rd, 2006, 06:48 AM a few things dat i woud disagree with while i was reading this is firstly, Kpt is seperate. But watever it has done within the past few years has been great for not only KPT but Karachi... Other then building various roads and underpasses and ofcourse the 2nd tallest Fountain....apparently i read somewhere their productivity rate has gone up 35-40 percent...and are not within the top 80 ports in the world. Also they recieved an award from the International agency for Ports all over the world...like some gold prize or something...
As for seeing the ships outside waiting to come in..i know for sure even here in ny and everywhere in the world...there is a wait time for more then a day.. I am pretty sure there is a law or sumthin..whr the ship has to come ...tell the port that they are here..and they have a waiting time .....
I read in dawn that they are also the 2nd most profitable Gov organization at this moment....
As for the foutain, i think people who are against it shoud think again....quite a few of my friends came down to pak with me over the winter break and thats one thing dat they remember very fondly and kept telling everyone here...Pak needs landmarks dat ppl can remember.....We have an image accross da world as a terrorist nation or a FUNDI nation.,,not only for them...but every country has an icon....if KPT can afford to do this....well good for them and us paki's.. I know for a fact Musharaf wanted this and wants the port tower aswell...cos when he came to america...he kept talkin abt this.....
so i think for achange we shud just enjoy da gud dat is happening in Khi rather then seeing ppl looting our country and runing away...
siali April 3rd, 2006, 06:52 PM I just do not understand why they cannot provide decent sidewalk and streetlighting outside the cutom's house bldg in above post. This rubble and mess is really shameful. Does anybody know the jurisdiction, as for khi almost everybody has his hand in everything.
We should start a letter campain to the authorities with one picture and few expectations.
swerveut April 4th, 2006, 01:07 AM ^^ I think this picture is from when the outside of the building was being cleaned and some repair was going on inside (although I remember reading a news item that informed that the interior repairs were being illegally done). Hopefully this rubble has been cleared by now... or maybe its still dug up considering the fact that most of Karachi is currently dug up.

swerveut April 8th, 2006, 01:42 AM I guess a flyover or an underpass would be needed at this intersection pretty soon too.
The problem with Karachi is that as soon as an underpass/flyover is built at one intersection, it transfers all the traffic load to the traffic signal ahead of it so the traffic just shifts from one intersection to the other. The best solution would definitely be mass transit.
FK April 8th, 2006, 10:11 AM The best solution for Karachi is overhead Mono-rail, lets see if the authorities realize this aswell before its too late and Karachi is filled with dozens of Flyovers and Underpasses.

UnitedPakistan April 9th, 2006, 03:03 PM Yeah, our harami new generation has been upto no good in all our cities. In Lahore every underpass is spray painted. It just pisses me off when i see it done.
south African Desi April 9th, 2006, 04:44 PM Well, frankly, graffiti is aworld wide problem....I have yet to visit a country which does not have graffiti...so much so that it is considered an art form at times....not that I condone it...
Hindustani April 9th, 2006, 06:48 PM Nice picture of ChenOne mall & nice renovation of custom's house there. I like both of them.
huit April 9th, 2006, 08:45 PM Capital punishment for spraying graffiti, I say!
ahadhayat11 April 10th, 2006, 07:26 AM i heard that kpt is geting Mrs. Bilgarami( the owner of Indus valley) to get some painting or somthing of that sort done on the walls, so it looks nice and clean.I personally like the fact that we have underpasses in khi now. Im sure when i come back from univ in June, roads will look as gud as the ones here in Massachusetts( well better then before atleast).
FK April 10th, 2006, 12:18 PM The sad part is that teenagers graffiting these days in Karachi are so out of touch that they often don't even write it properly, the other day I saw a wall ruined by graffiti which was so poorly written that it made me sick .. dont exactly remember the name/nick of that person but i'll give an example ..
forexample the guys name is fahad, so instead of writing "fahad" he wrote "fahd" missed the "a" and then corrected it by placing "^" and writing "a" above it, makes you think why do something like that in the first place ..

Intoxication April 10th, 2006, 03:09 PM If you look closely there are some signals on the top and right side of the pic.
More patience from the driver's side are also needed, give way to other cars and you'll reach your destination much quicker than just rushing into other cars.

No they are coming on the opposite side of the road!!!! :D
That place is near my house. I have been stuck there in a similar traffic jam myself ...which happened when the signal was turned off maybe due to power failure or something.
People don't have any manners or anything...everyone wants to be the first to go and then they all get stuck. Even my friend who was driving the car exhibited the same behaviour despite that I told him to calm down and be patient. :sleepy:

FK April 10th, 2006, 07:13 PM I was stuck in that same traffic jam and it took me about 45-50 mins to get from this roundabout to the next one, which hardly takes 5 mins!
And this lasted for about 2 hours or so ..
