When the romans captured the Jewish city of Shechem, as in many others, they also changed its name to link it to their empire.
The name they gave it was Niapolis. Now, in arabic you probably dont know but they cant prenounce "p" and they switch it with "b". so niapolis, became niabolis, which later became nablus..
