View Full Version : St. Michaelis Church | Hamburg, Germany
DiggerD21 December 11th, 2005, 07:43 PM The St.Michaelis Church is one of five Main Churches in Hamburg and the one with the most seats in Hamburg: 2500 seats. The tower is 132m tall.
The church was destroyed/damaged and rebuilt several times: The original St.Michaelis church was struck by a lightning on the 10th march 1750 and burnt down. In 1786 rebuilding of the church in its current form was completed, but in 1906 during repair work another fire broke out caused by a torch lamp. The church burned down completely but was immediately rebuilt (completed 1912). In WW2 the church was heavily damaged and repair works are still going on. The copper tower is renewed and currently the copper roof is being renewed.

I don't think so. Even most southern Germans might not know it. They may have heard of "Hamburger Michel" but they might not know what it actually refers to.
