View Full Version : Pico-Union, as bad as people make it out to be?
DowntownMan December 13th, 2005, 07:12 AM Hi all,
I've recently been to a part of Pico-Union district that is bordered with South Park area around Staples Center (valencia and 12th). And it wasn't that bad, especially for a college student. It's pretty close to South Park area (only 2-3 blocks) but I think the rent would be significantly less expensive.
So, what do you all think? Is it really that bad? Also, isn't development in downtown expanding into this area?
Fern~Fern* December 13th, 2005, 07:47 AM Just stay away from Alvarado Blvd. That area is just a tab dangerous after dark. Other than that everything should be OK. Also Welcome Downtown Man to the forum.
klamedia December 13th, 2005, 08:11 PM What does bad mean?
VansTripp December 13th, 2005, 11:45 PM It's ok in daytime, nothing bother me.
DowntownMan December 14th, 2005, 05:31 AM Thank you all for your replies. I actually drove by the area tonight and it was very quiet, maybe too quiet... I'm not even sure how to perceive this, but I guess it's better than sound of gun going off. That would probably fit the definition of 'bad'.
Btw, this forum is fantastic!

Pico Union is much more safer than Watts, Compton and rest of South LA, no bigger murder issue that what like happen in Watts.
solongfullerton December 14th, 2005, 07:31 AM I work with people from south la and compton and they would call you a total moron for saying that. Of course there are a few bad neighborhoods mostly surrounding the projects, but if you pay attention, most of the crime does not reach beyond a small radius of those areas. have you even ever been to those neighborhoods? ive been through by car and by metro and i would say its nearly all families just trying to get by like you and me, not looking to start any trouble or do anything wrong.
point being, stay away from the projects and you'll be fine. there are neighborhoods comparably better and worse throughout LA.
karlarrec1 December 17th, 2005, 07:24 AM I go to school at Olympic/Valencia (Loyola Law School) -- and I've always felt safe in the area. It might be different at night, but even then, I wouldn't be scared to walk around.

LA's from the San Fernando Valley, so of course he doesn't know what he's talking about, lol. He's probably relying on past stereotypes to say that.

Yeah, I'm currently live in Poway, CA, just right in SD County. I will probably moving back to LA after graduation or so.

...then why are you saying Pico-Union is much safer than South LA and Watts if you live in SD County? How would you know?
saiholmes December 17th, 2005, 10:10 PM Compton is no good.

Well, there's not really such thing as "safe" these days is it?

I had been in Pico Union, East LA, Boyle Heights, Westlake, South LA and many communities of LA. I know that Watts is full of shit and many gangs war between crip and blood, murder rate in Watts alone is bad. Pico-Union is just along with Downtown LA but there's crime issue too, not bad as Watts and South LA. Stop asking too many questions to me and I only know about LA alot.
klamedia December 18th, 2005, 05:58 AM Poway???? Oh lawd!!!!!!!
PotatoGuy December 18th, 2005, 06:09 AM lol... interesting, very

I thought Richmond was nere Marin, what makes it so dangerous?
kiluhoridah August 7th, 2007, 06:05 AM Richmond is in east bay by Oakland - dangerous suburb type town. BTW I was born/live in LA, currently residing in Mid-Wilshire -WHATITDO!
Kingofthehill August 7th, 2007, 08:20 AM Damn my dude why are you resurrecting old threads?
Anyways, Pico-Union is ok if you want to be treated as a second class citizen (English is non-existant). They also have their fair share of crimes, and the the main Hispanic gangs are in full effect over there.
