KARACHI: Gorakh Hill project to be completed by next year

KARACHI, July 24: The Gorakh Development Project will be completed by June 2006, a meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary, Fazalur Rehman, was told on Saturday.

According to details, the meeting was held in the office of the chief secretary to review progress of the Gorakh Development Project.

Additional Chief Secretary (Development) Ghulam Sarwar Khero told the meeting that a 60-km road would be completed by December to link the Gorakh Hill to rest of the country, while the whole uplift project would be completed by next June.

The meeting was told that work was in progress on a water scheme to supply water to a population of 10,000 there, while steps were also being taken to obtain water through traditional methods like hill springs.

It was said that after the completion of uplift work, the people of Sindh would not need to go to the Northern Areas or Murree for visits.

The chief secretary expressed satisfaction over the pace of uplift work and said that steps should be taken to promote tourism in Sindh.

He said special attention should be paid towards extensive tree plantation in the area, adding that Gorakh should be developed into a tourist resort like the Daman-i-Koh and Murree.

Mr Fazal also instructed the concerned officials to ensure weekly washing of roads and trees in and around the premises of the Sindh Secretariat. He also stressed on proper repair and maintenance of the Tughlaq House.—PPI

KARACHI, Aug 26: President General Pervez Musharraf on Friday inaugurated the beautifully developed Askari Park, built on the site of the old Sabzi Mandi on University Road, and described it as ‘a gift to people from the army’.

He pushed a button which made a beautiful arched water-fall operational and also unveiled a plaque. Following its formal inauguration in a colourful ceremony, the park was opened to public.

In the first phase of the development work, an area of 21 acres, out of the total 38 acres, has been covered while landscaping has been carried out over 15 acres.

Speaking at the ceremony, the president said that Askari Park was a gift for the people of Karachi in general and those of the surrounding areas in particular.

President Musharraf congratulated people of Karachi and the engineers associated with the project on this occasion.

He said he remembered the congestion and encroachment once prevailed in and around the site when Sabzi Mandi existed on this land. “Now it has become a transformed area,” he remarked, and commended the efforts of the army officers and jawans in this respect. He also recalled that the first gift of this kind from the army to Karachiites was a beautiful park at the mausoleum of Quaid-i-Azam.

“When I first came to Karachi in 1999, the first thing I did was to visit the Quaid’s mausoleum where I received a briefing on the green area within its vicinity which was in a terrible shape. I decided to get a park constructed for which the cost was estimated at around Rs500-600 million.

“However, when I asked the army men to undertake the same, they told me that they could build the park at half the estimated cost. And they did it as the park was constructed at a cost of just Rs250 million.”

President Musharraf also referred to the Zamzama Park in Defence area and said it was another beautiful park being visited by thousands of people.

He commended the efforts and performance of the corps commander, all corps engineers and the other officers who, he said, worked in a dedicated manner on this project and completed it in a short span of seven-eight months.

He also appreciated the assistance of Sindh governor and chief minister in this regard. He stressed on proper maintenance of parks in future.

Earlier, Corps Commander Lt-Gen Syed Athar Ali welcomed President Musharraf and termed the inauguration of Askari Park ‘a historic event’.

Brig Junaid of the Corps of Engineers gave details of the project and highlighted salient features of the park.

He told the president that the park had its own sewage treatment plant having a capacity of 100,000 gallons per day while a quantity of 35,000 gallons per day had been arranged from other sources.

The president was informed that a 150kv generator was procured for the park for emergency use while a 300kv connection was obtained from the KESC.

He was also told that about 27,000 plants of 164 varieties had been planted across the park.

Regarding future development, Brig Junaid stated that construction of a modern ‘food court’ in the park had been planned and it would take about 11 months to complete at a cost of Rs60 million.

President Musharraf was informed that a wide area outside the park had been earmarked for recreational activities for children and the same would be developed in the next phase. There would be a petrol pump next to the park for which the estimate has been put at Rs30 million,

KARACHI, Aug 26: The Askari Park, inaugurated by President General Pervez Musharraf here on Friday has many state-of-the-art features. Giving details of its salient features, Brigadier Junaid, who spearheaded the engineers associated with the construction and development of the park, explained various components, designing and future development works.

The main components of the park include two main gateways with green areas, a main walkway, a 700-metre-long jogging track, a 34-feet-high arch waterfall, a 25-feet-dia skating ring, a courtyard, a botanical garden, a portion exclusively for women, and four public facility areas.

The total area of the park is 38 acres, out of which 21 acres has been covered. Of this area, 15-acre land has been developed into green areas, 3.85-acre has paths and 4.1-acre land has various structures.

“We fully concentrated on construction which was started on October 25 and got the first phase completed within five months,” Brig Junaid said, putting the estimated cost of the project at Rs200 million. He indicated that the cost of development in the first phase was Rs96 million.

He informed the president that an estimated 70,000 gallons of water was required for green areas, fountains and general purposes. To meet the requirement, the park’s own sewerage treatment plant, having a capacity of 100,000 gallons per day, had been installed. Besides, four reverse osmosis plants for pure water having a capacity of 30,000 gallons and water supply connection for 5,000 gallons per day from the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board had been acquired.

In order to store this water, an underground water tank having a capacity of 500,000 gallons has been constructed within the vicinity of the park.

For power supply, a 300kv connection has been obtained from KESC on a payment basis and a 150kv generator for use in emergency has been made available at the park. There are 500 power connections in the park with approximately 20kms of underground cables running in different directions.

A fully automated irrigation system, with 201 sprinklers, has been installed. About six kilometres of water supply lines have been laid to irrigate the green areas and plantation.

A 15-acre area has been landscaped with greenery and plantation. There are 27,000 plants of 164 varieties across the park.

During development work, around 1.3 million cubic feet of rocks and boulders was removed to level the area. Subsequently, one million cubic feet of sweet earth was spread in the park for development of green area.

The share of the city district government in the estimated cost, i.e. Rs96 million, of phase-I is Rs63 million and that of the 5-Corps is Rs23 million.

Among the major expenditures were Rs40 million on structures, Rs24 million on development of green areas and plantation, Rs21 million on irrigation system and water supply, Rs12 million on electricity and Rs4 million on excavation and earth-filling.

Regarding future development, Brig Junaid said that the construction of a modern ‘food court’ in the park was under way and would be completed in 11 months at a cost of Rs60 million.

He said that a children’s activity area would be developed on the land outside and adjacent to the park in the second phase.

He said an estimated amount of Rs30 million would be spent on setting up a petrol pump outside the park for which formalities had been completed and work was likely to commence on September 30.— DAWN

Gorakh hill station project in doldrums

By Our Correspondent

DADU, Jan 26: A project to develop the Gorakh hill station has not been completed because of official indifference and corruption. The project was approved in August 1998 at an estimated cost of Rs45.252 million.

In the initial stage, Rs15.155 million was allocated for 32 kilometres of road, Rs11.375 million for bridges, Rs17.409 million for water supply scheme and Rs1.313 million for police posts.

The project was not started till 2003 and only few kilometres of roads were constructed.

The Gorakh hill is located 450 kilometres in the north of Karachi and 100 kilometres in the west of Dadu.

According to meteorological studies, the Gorakh peak lies at the altitude of 5,688 feet above the sea level.

In winter, people of the area come down of mountains due to severe cold and stay in the Kachho area.

The temperature during June is 17-30 degree centigrade (average) and during January -5 to 20 degree centigrade (average).

Average rainfall for one year is recorded 12.5 inches.

The topography of the Gorakh is 1,340 acres of land with average 5,000 feet altitude in Sindh and 1,000 acres (approximately) in Balochistan.

According to the revised PC-I, approved on February 24, 2003, the project cost stood Rs198.269 million and total Rs86.353 million for 54 kilometres road, Rs66.789 million 600 ft, Rs34.636 million for water supply scheme, and Rs8 million were allocated for the purchase of vehicles and other equipments.

Only 55 kilometres road was completed from the Wahi Pandhi to the Gorakh hill allegedly with substandard material. As a result, it has broken at different places and transport is facing difficulties to reach the hill.

The work for construction of police posts for security of tourists was not launched 1998.

Water and power supply schemes were not completed and few poles of electricity along with 11kv wires were install in the area.

The date of completion of the project was fixed as December 31, 2005. Till date, works and services department could not achieve the target.

Area councillor, Pir Bux Babar and social workers Abbas Jagwani and Qadir Lashari told this correspondent that the then prime minister, Mir Zafarullah Jamali had visited the Wahi Pandhi road and people had told him use of substandard material in the road and other development projects.

They said the then prime minister, Mir Zafarullah Jamali had directed the Sindh government to initiate enquiry into the matter which was still pending.

DADU, Aug 27: Officials of the Gorag Hill Station Development Authority have said that the project will be completed by the end of 2007 as work on water supply, roads, bridges, causeways and police posts is in progress.

They said that the supply of electricity to the Gorag Hill Station from Wahi Pandhi feeder had been completed by Hesco.

Other features of the project are: master planning of the area, bus stops, parking lots, washing base, automobile maintenance, drainage system, 20 security posts, helipad, parking lots for tourists, cable car and chair lift at 10 view points, horse and camel riding tracks, water reservoirs, sanitation and sewerage system, filter plant, development of water falls, health care units, 10-bed hospital, construction of power sub station, landscaping, bus terminal and taxi stands and zoo.

Officials said that the work on the schemes would start on January 1, 2007, after the construction of main double track from Wahi Pandhi to Khawal Luk.

The work on the first hill station project in Sindh was started in August 1998 with approved cost of Rs999 million.

The project is being funded on the equal basis by provincial and federal governments.

About Rs200 million were allocated for the year 2006-07.

The construction of road from Wahi Pandhi to Gorag hills via Khawal Luk, water supply scheme from Hingan spring, building structures of six police posts for security purposes, camp office of police and shades, bridges and causeways were going on.

The director-general of the Gorag Hill Station Development Authority, Aijaz Ahmed Mangi, EDO (works and services), Mohammad Ali Memon and EDO (health) Dr Dhani Bux Thebo, executive engineer public health engineering, Syed Zahid Hussain Shah, officials of tourism and cultural department visited ongoing schemes of the hill station.

The project-director Gorag Hill Development Project, Mohammad Ali Memon told Dawn that the work on 54 kilometres single road from Wahi Pandhi to Gorag Hill via Khawal Luk was going at a cost of Rs143.893 million.

He said that 99 per cent work on the road was completed but now the design of the road was changed at a very difficult point of Khawal Luk mountain where a double road was being constructed which would be completed by December 31, 2006.

He said that after the construction of double road, two vehicles can cross from this difficult point. He said that work on causeways and bridges was going on and 99 per cent of work had been completed.

The executive engineer of the public health engineering department, Syed Zahid Hussain Shah, said that the Rs49.589 million were allocated for water supply scheme from Hingan to Gorag Hill and 98 per cent of work was completed.

He claimed that within two months this scheme would be completed.

He said that Khawal Luk was difficult point on the road towards top of the Gorag Hill and a wall was being constructed to cover 1,000-foot deep ditch to avoid any accident.

He said that the alignment of eight places of the road was changed for widening which was also another cause of delay in completion of work.

He said that the main cause of delay in the work was rainfall at the mountain area as contractors faced difficulties to continue the work, so the date of completion was fixed on December 31, 2006.

He said that foreign and multinational companies were asked to establish five-star hotels and huts at the top of Gorag Hill Station.

He said that the scheme of selling plots would start on the Gorag and he had asked the revenue department to change the record of the land in the name of Gorag Development Authority.

He said that President Parvez Musharraf and Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim were interested in developing this tourist spot so the work on different schemes was underway with full speed.

He said that a major amount was also allocated for purchase of vehicles and construction of building of tourism and culture department officials.

The Gorag Hill is located about 450 kilometres in the north of Karachi via Sehwan-Dadu, 94 kilometres west of Dadu through Johi road and 140 kilometres away from Sehwan.

The Gorag peak lies at the altitude of 5,688-foot above the sea level. In summer about 500 people live around Gorag, their main source is wheat cultivation on rainwater.

In winter, people migrate to Kachho due to severe cold.

The main source of water is Nai Gaj but there are also some sweet water springs at the Gorag Hill.

The Hingan spring with water flow of 300,000 to 325,000 gallons per day, Gaji Bhunjo with 35,000 to 40,000 and Nigra with 4,000 to 5,000 gallons per day.

According to the topographic data, 1,340 acres of land with average 5,000-foot altitude lies in Sindh and approximately 1,000 acres in Balochistan.

The peak ranges 6,000-foot in western hill of Khirthar range in Sindh, Mari Jo Thal and Dublai in Dadu district and Dhariaro, Dad, Dum and Kutte Ji Qabar in Qambar-Shahdadkot district.

According to the metrological department, temperature in June is 30 degrees Celsius and in January (-)5 to (-)20 degrees Celsius.

KARACHI: The Government of Qatar will construct City Centre, a grand commercial centre including a seven star hotel, shopping mall and offices in Karachi, with an estimated investment of two billion dollars, said ambassador of Qatar, Hamad bin Ali Al-Hinzab, who called on City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal Thursday.

Hinzab also invited the city nazim to Qatar on behalf of the Ruler of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani when they could finalise projects that the Qatar government would invest in Karachi.

The ambassador told the press that trade and investment cooperation between the two countries was increasing. He mentioned that the Amir of Qatar is expected to visit Pakistan soon, on the invitation of the president, to inaugurate the projects. He will also lay the foundation stone for the city centre in Karachi.

Hinzab said that this project would be a major investment into Karachi, following the present government's policies on public/private partnership. He also mentioned that the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) will grant the land for the construction of the centre and he expected that the joint venture would increase revenue for the city government. He said that work on this project would start within weeks.

The city nazim also inaugurated the water and sewerage projects in Shah Faisal Town which cost an estimated Rs 50 million, including a 3,883-feet sewerage line and 11,150-feet water pipelines besides installing five pumps in different stations to regulate the supply of water. These projects would be completed in six Shah Faisal Town union councils where there is no existing infrastructure for water and sewerage.

Additional vice-chairman of the Water Board Imamuddin Shahzad, MPA Saif Abbas, Water Board officers, Town Nazim Shah Faisal Town Muhammad Imran, elected representatives and a large number of area residents, also attended the ceremony. ppi

After two months of being back in Karachi, I am beginning to feel that signing agreements doesnt actually make as much of a difference for the city as actually starting a project. Lots of agreements have been signed but only few end up getting to where they actually break ground and even fewer when they remain unaltered by our politicos - case in point the Karachi Financial Towers which got clipped by the CM, or the mass transit project which never materialized.

Nevertheless, good news, I wish it all the best.

^ to be honest guys. all major projects take atleast 2-3 years to start. and most of the big projects we've been hearing about, were told to the public in the last few months. there are positives if you look for em.

1. emaar is going in full swing with its projects.
2. DPworld is going ahead as well..
3. and the construction of the expressway has also started

so these are big projects and we shouldn't forget them.

I think we should all be patient and see how things work out. every big project is BOUND to face big problems as it involves a lot of money which means a lot of hungry greedy mouths to feed. if u know wut i mean.

Around Karachi, new land for construction is being reclaimed from the Arabian sea. The global warming may increase the sea level by 20 feet in next 100 years. That will cause catastrophic consequences for inhabitants of these areas. This is never being discussed in Karachi as the people get impressed by all the dazzling developments on the reclaimed areas. The reclaimed land also settles and loses two centimeter of height each year. The developers will disappear with thier money while the government will have to create wall to keep the sea from flooding these areas.

Any comments from other members.

The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has planned to construct 30-story mega complex within the premises of the existing Federation House at Clifton here. A delegation from FPCCI, who called on Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad here at the Governor House on Saturday, sought his help in execution of this important project. FPCCI President Chaudhry Muhammad Saeed, who led the delegation, requested the Governor to extend extra-ordinary support for that important project which would add to the dignity of this city besides acting as pool of the activities related to trade and investment.

The Governor showed his pleasure on this move and assured FPCCI people all out support and facilitation in this regard.

"Please go on with your plan. You can build 50 story building and, if required, rules of Karachi Building Control Authority (KBCA) would be relaxed," he assured them. He also acknowledged role of FPCCI in economic development of the country.

The one on the top of that is the "Mela" restaurant, which was part of Sabzazar before, the first building on the top is the Awami Markaz and a mall being built right next to it, or is it the same one we'r talking about?

Yeah, that's the place, but it is an insanely small place for a $2 billion investment, unless they'll pave the road with gold.

For a reference, Crescent Bay is gonna cost $2.4 billion.

From the original source:

"The Government of Qatar will construct City Centre, a grand commercial centre including a seven star hotel, shopping mall and offices in Karachi, with an estimated investment of two billion dollars."

All of this can't really fit into that place unless it's an 80-story supertall, and that place is too small to accomodate it. So I'm guessing it would be constructed somewhere else, unless they buy out the nearby land and offices behind it.

Secondly, I haven't really heard anything about thsi project lately anyway, so I'm not sure if it's actually going ahead.

Doha City Center is occupying almost the same space .... I know as I am living here ... an expansion project is ongoing for DCC and the budget of expansion is not less then 500m US$.
So, the overall cost could be 2b US$ for City Center in Karachi.

Qatar-based firm had expressed its interest in establishing seven-star hotels in the city which involved about $2 billion investment. He asked the E&IP Department to identify suitable locations in consultation with the Land Department. He also called for the setting up of an independent department with a task of extending all required facilities to investors right from their arrival in the city to the completion of their projects.

KARACHI: The Arena, which will be open for public soon, hosted an invitation only day attended by the family and friends of the people who bring this new entertainment center to Karachi.

The Arena is located at Karsaz and provides various recreational activities for people of all age groups. The most exciting attraction for most customers, however, seemed to be the ice-skating rink and a mini golf course.

“Ice-skating in Karachi is a blessing in disguise, especially with the hot weather all year round. There is finally going to be another activity to do in the heat other than eating and shopping at malls,” said Unisia Raza.

The Arena is a fusion of individual casual fun and competitive games for friends. Other than a skating rink and a mini golf course, it also caters to other interests like rock climbing, bowling, paintballing, a gaming arcade and a large cafeteria with a variety of cuisines.

“The Thai food is especially good at The Arena and is very reasonably priced too. They also have kids’ favorites like burgers and hot dogs within the food court and so far it seems to be well kept and hygienic,” said Sameea Shaukhat who took her two children there a few days back.

“I like paintballing a lot more at The Arena due to the fact that its much more organized here, with better equipment and a better atmosphere,” said Muhammad Ali. He felt that the great thing about this place was that they only let visitors come in a group, which must include women. This prevents stags and unwanted visitors that might make the women feel uncomfortable as is the problem with most of our public places,” explained Ali.

Ayza Tareen said that she had immensely enjoyed her visit to The Arena and was very pleased that the skating rink had an instructor who would teach people how to skate.

Other people especially appreciated the atmosphere of the skating rink.

Sara Majid said that she especially liked the disco lights all around the rink.

Rock climbing attracts the young people who are fond of the mountains.

“It is such a rush climbing up the rock wall, just to know that we can do it and it is a great way of exerting energy. Now I understand why people take up mountain climbing as a hobby. It releases stress,” said Usman Kareem.

Usman said he had been to the Northern Areas a lot of times and while hiking and trekking in the mountains, and had come across steep glaciers and cliffs, but knowing that this is a safe environment and one can take up the challenge is a natural high of its own.

The mini golf course gives the individual the opportunity to play the sport and enjoy its benefits without getting a membership of an actual golf club and realizing it is not a sport for them.

“This is perfect for youngsters who don’t have memberships and sometimes need a change from Cricket or Football.” said Ahsan Mirza while showing off his skill on the mini golf course.

This complex with its many sports and games also includes bowling alleys and a gaming arcade. Along with trying out new things, the Arena caters to those less adventurous ones who like to stick to their familiar activities.

The charges are reasonable according to the amount of activities present in the complex. Every activity has different charges and a separate fee is paid at the entrance. Food is also reasonably priced according to the people who have visited The Arena.

“So long as they maintain the equipment and cleanliness and control the number of people allowed in one place at a time, I’m sure nobody will mind paying even a little extra,” said Saleha Farooqi.

Most people who talked to Daily Times thought that the place had the potential of being a great success, given the options. Karachi is said to have limited entertainment popularity because of the many beaches being the main source of attraction.

“The Arena is bound to attract a lot of attention, more so because it is located very centrally and is easily accessible from almost all areas of the city,” said Hussain Kamran.

LARKANA, April 23: Sindh Minister for Law, Youth Affairs and Sports Ayaz Soomro said that the Sindh government would soon establish an authority for the development of Gorakh Hill Station to boost tourism in the province.

Speaking at separate receptions in Larkana, Shahdadkot and Sujawal on Wednesday he said a bill to this effect would be tabled in the next session of Sindh Assembly.

He said tapping the tourism related resources in Sindh would receive attention of the present government and added that Gorakh Hill Station had atmosphere very similar to that of Murree.

Its development into a resort would attract more tourists and in turn Sindh would earn handsome revenue, he hoped.

He claimed that he had tabled six bills in the provincial assembly within a short period addressing key issues like shifting of authority of Sindh Public Service Commission from governor to the Sindh chief minister.

He said that millions of rupees meant for conservation and preservation of Moenjodaro had either been siphoned off or embezzled and hinted at initiating a probe into it and those found guilty of misappropriation of funds would not go escort free.

He claimed that the establishment was behind the conspiracy of killing Ms Benazir Bhutto. He blamed previous government for selling Sindh’s precious land at throw away prices and disclosed that record pertaining to the sale had been collected and the inquiry into the affair had been kicked off.

He said that any one found responsible for selling out land at lowest prices would not be spared.

He assured of posting of renowned and honest police officers to address the issue of law and order in the province. He said the Sindh cabinet had taken up the issue of loadshedding in the province and added that new grid stations would be constructed with the renovation work of the old electricity wiring to curtail the yawning gap between the production and consumption with the focus on reducing power theft.

He said fast trains between Jacobabad via Larkana to Karachi would be started soon while there would be double flights to Moenjodaro throughout the week.

These matters had been conveyed to PPP co-chairperson Asif Zardari and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, he said.

He announced a grant of Rs300,000 for Shahdadkot Bar Association and Rs200,000 for Qambar Bar Association and disclosed that a lawyers colony would be established and a stadium would be constructed in Shahdadkot.

The area would start looking amazing and the climate would become awesome even if they start by just increasing the tree plantation by a few hundred percent. Very little cost and wonderful results.

But I really do hope they don't start building ugly theme parks and artificial water parks here. Whatever happened to the idea of heavenly looking nature parks and hill stations?!

Now how does it look anything like Murree or have a similar climate?

Don't get me wrong, I love such places, but it's not Murree, it's just a desert with a little plantation.

Not just the climate, it's just a desert. I really can't see how it'd be appealing to the normal people. This is exactly why I was so surprised when people said there's a place like Murree, and I was like how the hell could there be.

^^Well suppose to be, at that high altitude or why the comparison with Murree?

Looks like a good place for camping, provided its made safe and some medical facility is available close by.

"The weather at the hill in summer is very pleasant, with moderate temperatures during the day, dropping to slightly chilly at night. In winter, however, the temperature goes down to almost -8 to -12 degree centigrade."

"Last but not least, I cannot forget the hospitality of the people there, whoever we met, wherever we went. They welcomed us with open hearts and open arms. They served us delicious meals that we would not have thought of and gave us the respect that we do not get even from our blood relations here in our cosmopolitan area. They tried to make us as comfortable as they could, and showed us a concept of selfless living that we cityfolk have somewhat forgotten."

Just like kbboy said, it was reference to that "area being full of dakoos". It may be okay for parents to scare their kids from visiting the area but we should refrain from such beliefs.

To me its no different than, when a western think that in Pakistan everyone is a symapthizer of Taliban or that all women wear burqa or something.

Misconceptions are just that, misconceptions, unless ofcourse you've been there or atleast that was your own experience. Until then perhaps we should see how others felt when they went there.
I know we here are mostly open-minded liberal types, thus all the more surprising to hold such views about other fellow Pakistanis.
Hope my explanation clears tha air.

The area around Tariq Road/Bahadurabad is where the true middle class of Karachi live, and the area will become very nice in the next 10 years. Already many mid-rise apartment buildings of decent quality exist there. It will have a lot more as bungalows are converted to such mid-rises now and high-rises in the future.
