When I was in Jeddah there weren't many Palm trees nice to see some in these pics.

This place changed a lot, last time I was there was in 1997. Havin thought about it, time flies, dang, it's been 8 n a half years and it feels like last month.

Sayin it's bigger than Dubai by 10 times is too much though. The second pic reminds me of the buggies on the corniche.

Very funny! But I remember that one forumer posted photos of the KSA on SSC about six months ago and then took them down after a few days. I think he even apologized to anyone that was offended by his completely non-religious photos.

There are a lot of weird laws in the world. For example, in India it is illegal to take photos of commercial airports that have no military significance at all.

There are restrictions on photography in Saudi. You have to be sensible when you take photos. Taking photos of the interior ministry or any restricted building isn't a great idea.

As for my comment about this place, I don't want to elaborate too much, but it is difficult to talk about architecture when some people are hostile to anything Saudi.

why should we post only private photos of jeddah, i mean come on, how many private photos could there be, no one goes to saudi arabia unless they live there. so can we post some pics from the internet?

Anyway, urban regeneration is good. Developers shouldn't be given licences to develop outwards when there are whole districts in central Jeddah that need redeveloping.

Just come and visit Egypt. As soon as you get out of the Cairo airport, you are welcomed by tonns of slums, the same when you get out of Alexandria airport, which isn't really an airport, more like a match box.

You should man, saudi is an interesting place. I've seen soo many places there, spent 2 months there in the summer of 97, pretty cool. Last time I was in the eastern province was in nearly 4 years ago.

You know what a great place to photograph? Sultan Street went under a lot of transformation. That street looks very nice at night.

Good Zuhair. For your pics to be accepted on Emporis, you need to take care of some stuff:
1-Your pics should be clear and not hazy.
2-Avoid cloudy days.
3-Get down of the car for god's sake, get down, adjust the view, and press that shutter, then get in the car again. :D
4-Titlted pic, tilted pics, tilted pics. Alot of you photos are tilted, try to adjust your hands Zuhair, if you fail in this (smoking:P) use a tripod.
5-Night photos always rock. Use a tripod for them, and adjust your cam on 5 seconds timer. Flash is useless of course, it would be a loss of battery.

Regarding the airport...

There's lots of talk, but little action. They're supposed to start the RFP process for a new mega terminal to replace the two current terminals this year. But we'll see.

I know this, unfortunatly. I hope things will change though. Anyway, just do as I do, develop your stealth shooting abilities. Get down, walk casually, look around you in a casual way, with "I don't care about nothing" look on your face, raise the cam, take the shot, put it down, and walk away easily and quietly. Don't make a fuss about it, and don't give the impression that you're doing somthing wrong. You are Saudi afterall, even if somthing happened, you can get out of it easily.

I used different techniques to shoot pics in Riyadh, and I am determined to shoot NIGHT PICS USING A TRIPOD next time I go to Riyadh.

I want you to know that your photos have been very helpful to me as I immerse myself in as much of Jeddah images and information as possible. My sister and I will be moving there pretty soon and seeing these photos gives me an idea about the surroundings. It is not very different from the Manila, atleast, those areas in Manila that are being developed. The trees are quite familiar as well--shrubs, palm, etc. I take special interest in the King Abdul Aziz University images, too, since I'm planning to take up Post-Graduate studies in Jeddah. Speaking of which, I've been looking for information on how to do just that but there isn't much to read in English. I was wondering if you have any idea on which institutes of higher education in Jeddah offer Master's Degree programs for women and if you could point me in the right direction regarding that. I hope this isn't too much trouble for you.

I believe Effat college is right next door to Dar al-Hikma. Close to the Khozam park. Both are decent choices. Don't bother with KAU

I was planning on getting a Master's Degree to teach in Jeddah. and from what you said, it looks like I'll have to save up for a long time working odd jobs before I can do that. that's the thing. i don't have an ESL certificate, just a bachelor's degree in mass communication. but i have been researching extensively on the internet and i found out that there are post-graduate programs at KAU. the only problem is it's written in arabic. LOL! let's see...i've checked out jeddah community college, effat, dar al-hekma, cba, tabuk community college, and that technical college. AM I MISSING ANYONE?

Well I think it's like this

Muslims:

If you have relatives you can go directly

you can go do omra then take a tour

you can go for a business trip or get employed or I hear many yemenis and jordanians go to saudi to search for a job then take a tour


Non-muslims:

can enter saudi only if you have been employed by a saudi company, you cannot get employed by going to saudi and searching for a job you must find the job online I think because waiting for a saudi company to come and employ you is close to impossible.

If you have relatives there I think you might be able to visit (I'm not sure about this one)

I don't know about that tho...Jeddah is better off without all the government offices and ministries and whatnot....making it the capital would probably bring in more mutawwas (more poweful ones like in Riyadh).....and take away the relative openness the city enjoys...

the only time ive been to jeddah was during the Hajj. Jeddah airport looks a complete wreck. It's not exactly the best first impression to give visitors. Why is it in such a terrible condition anyhow? I thought Saudi was more advanced than this but i left feeling that it was on a par with a third world country.

whereas riyadh gets a lot of attention from the government....jeddah is a lot more self-dependent.....and is almost on its own.....

still...there is no hiding the fact that jeddah probably has the worst airport of any major city in the GCC....and not only the infrastructure...but the people as well....the custom officials need to act like they are being paid to provide a service...and not doing everyone a favor by working in between coffee and prayer breaks...

with millions of pilgrims comming to jeddah every year you can be sure that if any western company was running it they would not see them as a problem but as an opportunity to make money. They would build the best shopping malls at the airport to entice people to part with their cash. I know for myself that i wanted to spend money at jeddah airport but the shops were rubbish. Somebody put me in charge:)

It’s the way around, it prohibited more then anytime, after all those attacks we went through.

Its summer time ofcures it’s hot. But if you compare Jeddah to any other Gulf states/countries, the temperature is cooler.

No very few parts of Jeddah are green, most likely its a lot like muscat in its general landscaping.

Besm Ellah

This mosque was built in 1960s, but it was demolished because of structural problems,
then it was rebuilt with the design of famous Egyptian Architect Abd Alwahid Alwakil(Egypt).
The same designer of new building for historical Mosques
of Quba, Qiblatain and Miqat, in the holy city Madina.

i've remembered that
Alwakil designed many mosques in Jeddah with different scales,
the small scale like Corniche Mosque (North Corniche)
to medium scale (Al harithy Mosque-near the crossing of Medina road and Sary street) .
King Saud is the largest mosque had Alwakil designed in Jeddah

Let's continue

As we know
Alwakil is a successor of Hassan Fathy's method in design and constrution,
but the scales of Alwakil's projects are larger
Some features in this mosque prove that fact

(A courtyard surrounded by 4 Iwans and hypostyles behind them)
Here we can see the Great Iwan (Iwan of Qibla)

This courtyard is a good way to cool the mosque
i remember that this photo was taken before Zohr prayer time
In a hot day in September
although the air condition was off
but the air flow was as you are on the beach of Alexandria
in a nice summer day :)

Your are right, its design is a copy of Soviet Style towers, which was popular in our region in 1960s and 1970s.

The photos are good, but the reflection of the glass reduced its quality.

lol some of those pics taken near the Jeddah port look very similar to Bur dubai area of dubai near port Rashid.

^^yah i know but if you was down looks diffrent 100% these area rendomly not like bur dubai.

Why is the south beach so neglegted like that??

^^ Because Jeddah continued to develop northward (north beach then obhur) and nothing really happened in the south. I feel like that whole area is some kind of industrial wasteland (it's not really but just feels like it), maybe because I saw it after the port, heading south from north. There is a room for a lot of development there but I don't know if it'll happen. North corniche has a chic feel to it...it's fashionable...it's wealthy..with a lot of buzz....it's close to tahlia street...whereas the south is....the port and I think some industries (I think...can't even remember cuz we hardly ever went there).

why can I see womens in some of these pictures?

^^it's far 10km from city there no serves or police also cant fond any saudi ppl all foreign from Philippine,British,Indian,Turkish...and so on .....nice thing i seen many time childs in ~10 years nude on beach hahahah they fell free there :P

@Saudi guy, do have rendering of the Jeddah International and Domestic Airport expansion? I think they already started the construction. I hope they will do it like the Riyadh Airport or much better like the Dubai Airport.

I'm sure Tokyo is richer than Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi has a small population to be compared with Tokyo and New York. Abu Dhabi may be the richest city, but the GDP of the city stands at about 160 billion dirhams ($44 billion) which is nothing, Jeddah's GDP stands at SR350 billion ($95 billion). I'm not so sure though if Abu Dhabi is the richest, depends really. Abu Dhabi has a high GDP Per Capita of about $38,000, which would be definitely higher than Jeddah.
