View Full Version : #COMPLETED: MARINA MALL, HOTEL & RESIDENCE (Dubai Marina)
jeetha January 17th, 2009, 01:07 PM The exclusive high end brands you refer to will end up in the HIGH END of the marina.
Marina Arcade in the tallest block.
Pound shop opening there.
dirtyharry1 January 17th, 2009, 01:53 PM Who needs high end shops? Go to MoE or Burjuman, they are always empty and the staff does not know what to do.
At the end people are running to the bloody malls because of the supermarkets there... that's all... and have a look to the exchange rates Dirham to Pound and EURO - shopping is not cheaper than in Europe, the shops do not have the bigger sizes and the stress going to the mall is not worth it...
So be happy with our Marina Mall!!:)
Ben40 January 17th, 2009, 06:16 PM If the Marina mall only had Waitrose I would be happy enough...
Joannides January 17th, 2009, 08:25 PM I went there today, and found the whole experience quite relaxing. Makes a big difference having something half decent for food shopping in the marina, rather than relying on Spinney’s at Marina Walk or Geant in Ibn Batutta.
In fact, compared when I first went to marina mall, there are a lot more shops open, although admittedly, it’s still very under occupied. Even the food court has progressed from just having Cinnebon open to Cinebon, an Indian take away, Baskin Robins and KFC a few days away from opening. New shops are opening up on an almost daily basis, so who knows, this time next month, we might be complaining of parking problems or crowds!
dirtyharry1 January 17th, 2009, 08:29 PM I am for sure not complaining about the fact that it is relatively empty...
Even if I am the only one in waitrose, I would be happy...
All other places here are busy enough...
jeetha January 17th, 2009, 08:38 PM Folks you are making me jealous. Have to take a trip to Dubai and see for myself. As you guys out there are not posting pictures.
Anyone know when the hotel is opening?

Tightness January 17th, 2009, 09:11 PM Now let's wait for the Gourmet tower to open. This will be another highlight!
Any dates?
Parisian Girl January 19th, 2009, 12:29 AM Now let's wait for the Gourmet tower to open. This will be another highlight!
Any dates?
Very true. Can't wait to visit Dubai and check this one out! :)
Pound shop opening there.
^^ :hilarious
jithilkallada January 19th, 2009, 05:23 AM can any one post panoram pic of marina mall :banana:
Tightness January 19th, 2009, 09:39 AM Sorry that I have been unable to take a picture of the food court panorama view. Next time I will be there I will be bring my ultra wide angle (10mm). Promised!
AppleMac January 19th, 2009, 12:02 PM Not a great day today but it gives you the idea - you can sit outside the food court, munch your KFC and watch the exceedingly slow progress of Marina Quays and Bay Central - a good game for the kids is 'Spot the Worker'

Love that last picture Mmmmmmmmmm
thedubailife January 19th, 2009, 04:31 PM Is waitrose any more expensive then other stores or supermarkets?
AppleMac January 19th, 2009, 04:48 PM ^^^^
Yes - but you get what you pay for - quality is top notch
Tightness January 19th, 2009, 04:59 PM yeah, Waitrose is positoned above Spinneys.
Imre January 20th, 2009, 01:10 PM ^^^^
Yes - but you get what you pay for - quality is top notch
First time I was there today ( and probably last time),same brands but more expensive than the Geant or Carefour, good for the english housewife who doesnt care about the money because she spends her housband money:)
grill chicken 15 dhs , same in the Spinneys just 9.95 dhs.
belgianman January 20th, 2009, 01:19 PM could anymore post some pics about news shops that were open at the marina mall?

AppleMac January 20th, 2009, 04:13 PM ^^
Restaurants - it's called the "Gourmet Tower' or something like that.
Parisian Girl January 21st, 2009, 07:31 AM ^^ Yes, it is called Gourmet Tower.
Imre, beautiful shots of GT! This complex just gets better all the time!

bencat27 January 26th, 2009, 08:04 PM I'm the manager of one of the shops there, and it's a bit irritating that it is so quiet, but I did specifically ask to be moved from Dubai Mall (hell!) to here, as it's just round the corner from where I live too!
I spoke to one the malls Duty Managers the other day to get some more info, and apparently, Gourmet tower is close to completion, but wont open until the Hotel opens (due to them only being able to get alcohol licenses once the hotel opens!). The hotel is due to open around June time apparently, and thus the Gourmet Tower will open at the same time roughly. The cinema is due to open July, as they have to wait for Dubai Mall's cinema to open first, Marina Mall isnt allowed to open it before Dubai Mall. Also, there some of the shops are not going to open for a long long time due to the companies basically not being able to afford to open due to the economic crisis! Oh, and the car park will start charging soonish too, to put residents of the Marina off from parking there and not going to the mall itself!
Think thats about it!

Thank you Bencat for the insider information. :)
I think it is going to be a great mall eventually. The only mall with alcohol! And not to forget when the bridge will be connected to Jumeirah Lake Towers you will be flooded by customers  And you will be laughing all the way to the bank.
Don't you remember that the shops in The Walk in Jumeirah Beach Residence were also complaining in the beginning, - but now they are really busy.
However I hope you are getting a good discount in your rent from now on until June/July?
Shame about the parking charge, that could keep customers away!
Been to Dubai Mall and did not like it, it is ugly compared to Marina Mall....
advlive January 27th, 2009, 09:24 PM I Like you Pleth. Nice Answer.
Tightness January 27th, 2009, 09:25 PM Well, the parking will be probably free as long as you have a minimum purchase.
Regarding the alcohol, the MoE does serve in that sense alcohol too - through the restaurants of the Kempinski ...
GoDubai! January 29th, 2009, 06:00 PM If the parking charge is like Burjuman Mall then that will definitely put people off. I parked once at Burjuman and vowed never again. The charge is AED 20 per hour unless you spend AED 100 on purchases. So, I was just over an hour, which meant AED 40. No way I'm just going to through away that much I figure so I think, OK for 60 more my parking is free and I get a little something for my money. Now in stupid Burjuman there is no "little something" no supermarkets, no discount shops--it was almost impossible to spend 100 dirham on anything useful. I spent at least another hour at combing the bookshop, looking for some cheap electronics and could find nothing even ate at the Food Court though I wasn't hungry. Finally realized I could buy phone cards to rack up 100 without just throwing money away on some overpriced useless thing. Then I had to trudge around looking for an info counter to get the parking voucher. Never Burjuman again!
Hope Marina Mall doesn't go this route. So what if a few other visitors use the parking garage. It isn't that convenient for accessing other towers anyway.
Dubai_Steve January 29th, 2009, 06:05 PM Would be OK if they set the minimum shop to AED 50 at marina mall, it would be quite easy to spend that on something you need at Waitrose.
GoDubai! January 29th, 2009, 06:21 PM ^^ That's true. The problem with Burjuman is that they don't even have a supermarket. I went to every electronic shop there looking for a little flash card reader doohicky. They go as cheap as 15 dhs at Carrefour. The closest I could get to that in Burjuman was 150 dhs!
Imre January 29th, 2009, 06:35 PM they ask money in the Burjuman because the whole Bur Dubai were parking inside.I went there many times around 9-10 and was difficult to find a parking but the mall was empty.
Marina Mall will be similar then the Marina Walk , first 2 hours free after 20 dhs/h, this is ok 2 hours enough there.
AltinD January 29th, 2009, 06:51 PM As soon as Metro will start, all Malls will charge for the parking so enjoy it till it lasts. :runaway:
Imre January 29th, 2009, 06:58 PM Anyway ,Mazaya Center (outside parking) will charge soon , but just 5 dhs/h
if you spend 50 dhs , parking will be free
Dubai_Steve January 29th, 2009, 07:01 PM Marina Mall will be similar then the Marina Walk , first 2 hours free after 20 dhs/h, this is ok 2 hours enough there.
That payment structure could cause a divorce!
AltinD January 29th, 2009, 10:02 PM ^^ No it will not. Since it is in a Mall, there is a minimum spend to get away with no parking charges ... and we know that in the kind of situations you mentioned, reaching the "minimum spend" will be the least of your worries.
Desert Diver January 29th, 2009, 10:36 PM ^^^^ :lol::lol::lol:
^^ :lol::lol::lol:
Well 5dhs/h or something like first two hours free and then 20dhs/h would be ok. But more... :ohno: Between The Springs and Marina Mall there are not many Metro stations... I'll have to go by car even after the Metro has opened.
i love dubai January 30th, 2009, 08:12 AM I visited the marina mall last week for the first time. lt was below my expectations. The finshing quality of the mall is nothing like other malls in Dubai. It seems that they have spent more money on the outside than the inside of the mall.

It really is quiet, but as soon as the temperatures rise people will shift from The Walk to Marina Mall. The Walk is very busy on weekends now and so will be the Mall eventually :cheers2:

High Times February 19th, 2009, 02:33 PM SHOCKING how empty that place is.
Dubai_Steve February 19th, 2009, 03:07 PM Depends what time you go I suppose? Most people will be at work outside of the marina area during the day. Also the marina area is not yet host to that many tourists and half the shops are still to open so there is not much reason to go there. When the remaining shops, gourmet tower, water taxis and cinema open things should improve a bit. In the day probably only house wives shopping at waitrose and waiting for the other shops to open.
Parisian Girl February 19th, 2009, 11:57 PM Yeah, clearly still a lot of shops to open here yet, so people shouldn't be too surprised that Marina Mall is looking kinda deserted at the moment. All that delicious coffee going to waste at Starbucks. :ohno: I need to get down there and sort them out! TEN coffees please! :D
I agree, Steve, once the Gourmet Tower, Cinema and Water Taxis come on line this general area will see a big increase in footfall. It's simply inevitable. Bearing in mind also, when the Hotel and Residence open it will experience an even further increase of visitors/residents/tourists. This mall is brilliantly situated imo. :)

dirtyharry1 February 21st, 2009, 07:46 AM Yes, but enjoy the empty place! Quiet and peaceful... It will be crowded soon enough.
By the way, the traffic in the Marina is already a mess, so be happy that not more people are coming...
bizzybonita February 21st, 2009, 11:58 AM ^^ That's right :)
AltinD February 21st, 2009, 02:25 PM By the way, the traffic in the Marina is already a mess, so be happy that not more people are coming...
Saw that last evening while driving in SZR. :ohno:
I think allot of that traffic is from the visitors to The Walk though, and if that's the case, hopefully the new bridge/roadwork near Dorrabay will releave the traffic once completed and also the 5.5 interchange is fully done.
Pleth February 23rd, 2009, 06:05 PM Yes and a pity since it seems like a nice place :ohno:
Let me remind you all the malls in Dubai were quiet in the beginning.
I live in the Marina, I don't think the traffic is so bad here.
Desert Diver February 24th, 2009, 02:00 PM Marina Mall will be busy eventually. I personally like the place, but I am increasingly losing my sympathy... every time I go there the bored watchmen chase after me in order to give a lecture that taking pictures is prohibited :ohno:
Never has been a problem at Dubai Mall which is also Emaar... dont know, they must be extremely bored at MM.
More and more I get the impression, whole Dubai has a "Non SLR policy".
What is the problem!? :mad::rant::wallbash::down:>(:no:
Maybe I should change my nickname.
"The architecture spy"
Imre February 24th, 2009, 02:03 PM why problem the photos there?
They have never told me that is prohibited.
Desert Diver February 24th, 2009, 02:10 PM ^^ Its because of my camera... it looks like this
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d300/images/d300-grip.jpg
Appearently they think I want to publish brochures or whatever :ohno: They just cant believe that its my hobby. Ok, I post the pics here, but I rather see this as free advertising for Emaar, Nakheel etc. I'll never get over it. In Europe public places are public. Here in Dubai in the end complete skylines are private property of Emaar which they think gives them the right to regulate people taking pictures and participate financially in professional publications such as company brochures and such. If I wanted to officially take pics with my SLR I would have to obtain a permit for a couple of hundred Dirhams :ohno:
It sucks.
Imre February 24th, 2009, 02:20 PM I used there Canon EOS 20D , front of the security and he said nothing.
they just dont like the tripod:)
Developers dont like photos of construction sites because after they can not lying :)
Desert Diver February 24th, 2009, 02:29 PM ...Maybe they just dont like Nikon :)
But you're right, regarding construction sites that is. But if it comes to finished buildings they should be proud IMO!
Well ok... there's probably not any pride for Marina Mall yet, deserted as it is...
P.S.: Tripod is the next issue. Just because I need to have the camera steady when it comes to my beloved night shots that doesnt mean I am taking pictures for some glossy brochure :ohno:
Well enough with that, sorry for being off topic. I just had to get rid of my frustration :)

Pleth March 2nd, 2009, 04:02 PM About time! This mall should start out with lots of good bargains in each shop to pull the crowds!
Make cheap offers for DSF, - but they didn't. So the shops are just like all the other shops in the rest of Dubai and why would the customers be attracted?
The shops themselves are also to blame here for the missing sales, they have not understood to make special opening bargains!

Josau April 10th, 2009, 09:11 AM Citycenter Mall didn't need Ikea to function well, it's in the middle of everything.
Marina Mall store selection is to much "upper end". Went there with a friend to by shoes, ended up getting in a cap to Ibn Battuta, as there, you can get the "buy 2 get on for free" deals which are very popular in Dubai in the moment. There are sales everywhere, except in Marina Mall and people have no money. The shops are suffering and it'll be a very very hard summer for everyone, there are simply no people and there will be even less after the schools finish. They predict and exodus of up to 300 000 people.
Pleth April 10th, 2009, 10:31 AM We have had the discussion before, and I think once the bridge to Jumeirah Lake Towers opens, plus the gourmet tower the mall will be busy. All malls are empty at the beginning.
Having said that, I must agree that the shops in this mall are much too high class, and there are no good bargains to pull the crowds, no sales either. Why?
I shop a lot in Waitrose, it may be a little more expensive that Carrefour, but it is so convenient, you can almost park outside, and they have a great selection, even Chinese fried spinach with garlic!!:nuts: Not to mention their famous strawberry tarts!!! (not even costly).
Why the food court is empty is a mystery to me! You have a 5 star terrace with the view almost better than the Yacht Club´s restaurant! The food is great and low priced, the variety is good and as I said the best view in the Marina!
Thanks Imre for great and clear photos of the Gourmet Tower, it is beautiful.

bencat27 May 4th, 2009, 11:31 PM Well, the mall has been very quiet apart from Fridays. Saturday nights are particularly quiet which I find surprising. The stores are not that expensive, I don't get the complaining. The only "designer" store is Balmain (the one next to Diesel). The rest are all middle of the market. Quicksilver and Billabong are reasonable, Springfield is cheap, Aldo for shoes is reasonable. The mall manager has told me that they are aiming for the middle of the road stores, and last time I spoke with him he said he is trying to get Bershka and H&M there. One thing I have noiticed is the stores are taking a long time to open. The mall is what, 5 months old now and still there are many still to open. It's tough for us guys who work there, my store is struggling to take more than 2000 on a weekday, and we have our SS09 pre-season stock discounted, and are running a suit promotion (buy one suit get 2 shirts free), and also a shirt promotion (buy 2 shirts get 1 free) and still nothing! Therefore everyone who likes Massimo Dutti (similar stuff) or who knows Sacoor Brothers (my shop) come to Marina Mall and buy from us instead of our stores in MoE, Dubai Mall and Festival City!
(sorry couldn't resist!)
Also I too am desperate for the bridge to hurry up and finish between JLT and Marina as I live in Green Lakes!!! Damn construction workers, how difficult can it be to build a bridge!
AltinD May 5th, 2009, 03:49 PM ^^ Bridge shall be ready by September 9th ;)

Yes, and when the walk-bridge from JLT opens... Then it will be too crowded!
The design of the mall is nice, high class (just look at the ladies restroom, it looks like a 5 star hotel). Not to mention the palm trees outside. I am looking forward to seeing the waterfront here when it is finished.
It can be difficult to find your way in this mall, as it has the round and the squared section, two different sets of lifts, and two different sets of parking areas.
The parking spaces are really cleverly made, as every space has a lamp in the ceiling, it gleams red for occupied and green for free, so when you get inside, you just look up to find a green light - a vacant parking space.
I think when they built this mall, they did not think of the costs, only how to make it stunning and convenient.

The children’s shows are being held weekly from 8pm to 8.30pm and 10pm to 10.30pm from Thursday to Saturday in the Dome Atrium and include colourful acts such as dual juggling and magic shows, Dora the explorer, Bubble shows, Mickey & Minnie Mouse, pantomimes, clowns and Teletubbies.
From 6pm to 9pm, the atrium comes alive to the fun-filled activity workshops for children including sand art, colouring, clay pots, moon picture frame, sun catcher photo frames, candle stand, monument canvas and pearl mosaic jewellery box workshops.

Pleth August 30th, 2009, 10:41 PM When are they going to start charging for parking?
They won't really charge for parking, as I have been told the first 3 - 4 hours are free. This is only to avoid that people will park their cars at the malls all day and take the Metro to work.
There are big carpark buildings under construction near the Metro stops to cater for the working drivers.
It will all start on 09.09.09.

bizzybonita October 12th, 2009, 11:41 PM Dubai Marina Mall strengthens offerings and access points to position it as new lifestyle destination
Dubai, UAE,
October 11, 2009: Dubai Marina Mall has strengthened its retail and F&B offerings as well as added new access points to further establish itself as the new lifestyle hub in New Dubai.
The newest shopping and leisure destination by Emaar Malls Group in the Dubai Marina community has launched several lifestyle stores, many of them marking their first retail outlet in the city. Guess by Marciano, Nolita, Dryberg and DG+ have opened their first stand alone stores in Dubai at the mall. In addition, personal fashion consultation sessions have been introduced to the mall by Stylist Marissa Woods.
Strengthening access to the mall is a new walkway that connects the Dubai Marina Yacht Club with the mall as well as a network of bridges connecting various residential units in and near Dubai Marina. Visitors from the neighbouring Emirates Living communities and Barsha can access the mall through a dedicated tunnel past Exit 32 off Sheikh Zayed Road.
Mr Ian Ferguson, General Manager, Dubai Marina Mall, said: “Dubai Marina Mall is continuously exploring options to make the mall a meeting point for families and friends. The introduction of new access points as well as strengthening our retail and F&B spread now offer the dual benefits of easier access and more retail & leisure choices.”
He added: “Several retailers have opened their first stores in the city at Dubai Marina Mall, highlighting its appeal to the retail trade. Today, we have over 100 stores operating at the mall.”
Apart from Waitrose, the largest grocery store in the community, Dubai Marina Mall has opened Favourite Things Mother & Child, the innovative children’s edu-tainment concept, which offers parents the opportunity to relax, shop and meet friends, or join in with their children’s play activities. A cineplex and waterfront promenade will also open at the mall.
Other retail stores that have recently opened in the mall include; Patrizia Pepe, Cole Haan, Giordano, Follie Folli, Reiss, New Look, Desigual, Juicy Couture, Bebe Sport, Karen Millen and Rocco Barocco in the fashion section; Nike, Stadium and Adidas as sport and lifestyle stores. At the food court, Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Yo! Sushi, Café Blanc, Lebanese Restaurant, Assia in Wok, Saj Express, Cinnabon, McDonalds, KFC, India Palace, Subway, Baskin Robins, Pizza Hut and TGI Fridays have opened. Visitors to the food outlets can enjoy spectacular views across the Dubai Marina with the options of both al fresco and indoor dining.
Dubai Marina Mall will continue to introduce new stores and restaurants in the coming months, adding to its appeal as a premier lifestyle destination in the Dubai Marina community. A premier retail and leisure destination, the mall is part of a complex comprising The Address Dubai Marina, opening this year; a 7-storey Gourmet Tower dedicated to diverse cuisine; and Marina Plaza, a commercial tower that has been launched to overwhelming customer response.
