I think I know which one this is...

Its the one near the Airport, is that correct? Last year there was a massive construction site over there, a bit nearer to the horse racing stadium.

Thanks for posting the pictures :D

Kuwait's first grass golf course, named Sahara, has just had its first "soft" opening this past Thursday. I had the opportunity to be there, and was very impressed. A full-grass golf course has been long overdue for Kuwait. Don't have any pictures yet, but when I do, I will be posting them.

Project Name : Sahara Golf & Country Club
Construction Start : 2003
Construction End : 2006

Sahara Golf & Country Club, Kuwait’s first grass golf course.

-Project Location :
Sahara Golf & Country Club is located close to the 6th Ring Motorhighway South of Kuwait city. It is approximately 15 minutes away from Kuwait City and 8 minutes away from the Kuwait International Airport, which provides an easy access to and from the club.
(2km from my house :D )

- Project Componets :

Golf Course:

http://www.top4arab.com/map-pop-1.jpg

The golf course, evidently, is the main component of the project. Although a few sand golf courses do exist in Kuwait, this golf course is the first of its kind in the country. Built according to PGA championship standards, it is a 6709 yards long 18-holes par 70 course, with all the natural traps and landscaping necessary for any competitive golf course, including 3 lakes. The driving range has a unique shape which is similar to fairways, and it contains full facilities. This course was designed by Swiss golf course designer Peter Harradine, the person behind the successful designs of the most important golf courses in the Gulf region including the Doha Golf Club in Qatar and the Jabal Ali Golf Club in Dubai.

A very distinctive feature of this course is that part of it, exactly twelve holes, falls within the horse race track of the Equestrian and Hunting Club, providing an exquisite view for those who will be watching the horse races, while at the same time not blocking their sight. This falls in line with Peter Harradine's objective of making this golf course the most attractive one which exists within a horse race track. The other distinguishing aspect of the course is the difference in topography between the parts falling inside and outside of the horse race track. Adding to this, many holes are floodlit , as well as the driving range , allowing for the enjoyment of the game at night especially on hot summer days.

More uniqueness is added by the fact that the clubhouse, chalets as well as the entertainment center share the picturesque panorama that exists, giving the members and guests the soothing feeling of being in a "green haven" rather than in the desert. In this aim, nearly 750,000 m³ of sand was removed to create a very distinguished contouring that provides this nice view and leaves the players with enough challenge to enjoy their games.
Finally, the co-existence of this club within the Equestrian and Hunting Club gives its members and guests additional benefits, as they might be offered special packages that include the ability to participate in the horse backriding, hunting and different activities offered by the Equestrian and Hunting Club.

ClubHouse :

http://www.top4arab.com/midbar222.jpg
http://www.top4arab.com/Elevatore-View-2.jpghttp://www.top4arab.com/RESTAURANT-2b.jpg

A luxurious 9500 m² club house with due consideration was laid on the highest level of architectural specifications, as it is the image of the Golf Club to the members as well as to the visitors. The building comprises of:
* 350 m2 golf pro-shop, selling all golf-related equipment and accessories, as well as those of other sports like tennis and squash.
* Distinguished restaurant that serves members and visitors.
* Coffee shop, café and snack bar.
* Golfers' lounge.
* Sitting and rest areas in many locations inside the club.
* Covered outside balcony-terrace fit for barbecuing.
* Administration offices.

Chalets :

http://www.top4arab.com/chalets.jpg

The project also includes 21 chalets for rental on a daily basis as well as long stay. Two types of these chalets exist: regular (14), with one bedroom and saloon . The regular chalets have a common swimming pool .Deluxe (7): with 2 bedrooms , saloon and a private swimming pool for each chalet .

Multipurpos Hall :

http://www.top4arab.com/Multipurpose-Hall-2.jpg

With an area of 2320m², this multipurpose hall accommodates many events, especially weddings. It contains a reception lobby and the main hall, as well as a catering hall.

Health Club :

http://www.top4arab.com/healthclub-2.jpg

A health club exists within the clubhouse. This health club encompasses the following facilities:

*Gymnasium .
*Sauna and steam room .
*Squash and open tennis courts.
*Beauty parlor .
*Outdoor swimming pool as well as indoor swimming pool .
*Fitness room .
*Lockers .
*Children playroom .

Entertainment Center :

http://www.top4arab.com/Entertain-SthView-2.jpg

Shopping Mall with Entertainment Venues:

As part of the entire project, and just at the outskirts of the Sahara Golf and Country Club, a Shopping Mall exists. This mall is one of its kind in Kuwait, due to some of its components and their allocation. The first originality about this center is the combination between a shopping mall , food court and many indoor sport-oriented games .

Guests at the Mall will be able to do their shopping with a peaceful mind, knowing that their children are having fun at any of the entertainment venues available indoor. Guests will be pampered with the luxurious feel that the Mall will offer, through its distinguished brands, luxurious interior design or the facilities it has.

Shoppers who decide to visit any of the restaurants will enjoy the view that the inside as well as the outside of the Mall will offer. The Golf course, not far from the entertainment center, complements this exquisite view when seen from different locations.

Outdoor area with Beautiful Landscaping and Car Parks.

http://www.top4arab.com/Entertain-Arialview-2.jpg

An indoor entertainment center and shopping mall- area of 17900 m² :

including:
*Retail shops.
*Food Court.
*Arcades for electronic and video games.
*Restaurants and Cafes.
*Bowling and Billiards Halls.
*Wall climbing.

The project expected to open in 2006, although it already welcomed some golfers :)

Actually it is 1750 KD the first year and 1500 KD after. There is a 250 KD intilization fee added to the 1500 KD. I agree it is actually very cheap in comparison to other countries. A normal membership in the SAS or Palms is around 750 KD (or something like that) and that does not include a golf course. The problem is that it looks like it will take forever to finish the clubhouse and other facilities. I don't know who is running the construction project but if it was me, I would have the project engineer fired!

I've seen a lot of squash courts in the world but I've never seen one with wooden cladding. Aren't they supposed to be made out of concrete ? And what else is operational in this project ?

I've seen a lot of squash courts in the world but I've never seen one with wooden cladding. Aren't they supposed to be made out of concrete ? And what else is operational in this project ?

High-end squash courts that you find in Kuwait (Palms Club, Viking Radisson SAS, Elyssium, the new C-Side club) all have ones that are built with side and front panels. Although these panels are not made entirely of wood, they are composed of a combination of materials, one of which is wood. The idea of these panels is to give a balanced bounce while providing a little "cushion" when a player runs into one of the walls.

Concrete squash courts are fine, but they are not player friendly!

At the Sahara Golf Club, the only thing completed other than the 18 hole golf course and driving range are the 2 squash courts. The tennis courts are close to completion, and the pool area still needs another couple of months. THe main club house is slated to be completed in about 1.5 months. Everyone is waiting for the government to connect the electricity (currently running on a generator) so that night golf can commence.

Yeah I get what you are saying vana8 but atleast they've got them. Squash is as popular as handball in Kuwait and therefore squash courts need to be found everywhere.
Btw isn't glass courts the same as concrete courts in terms of their effect on the player (such as this one in the Kuwait Squash Open) ?

GPS at The Golf Club

Members and visiting golfers may now enjoy the benefit of GPS (global positioning system) on their golf carts when they play at Riffa Golf Club.

The new 'GolfPlus' system is designed to inform golfers of the exact distance of their ball from the green thereby making club choice quicker and easier and ultimately improving their pace of play.

'We will shortly be taking possession of thirty new Club Car golf buggies, all of which will be fitted with the GolfPlus system. Forty Club Car buggies in our existing fleet have already had the system installed,' explained Phil Jones, director of golf operations at Riffa Golf Club.

Our sister company in Kuwait, the Sahara Golf & Country Club will also be installing GolfPlus on their fleet, making us two of the leading clubs in the region to install this type of equipment to our carts. This project is indicative of our ongoing commitment to providing both our members and guests with a five star golfing experience.'

GolfPlus is an incredibly user friendly piece of equipment,' said Mark Newell, the group managing director of GolfPlus. 'It consists of a full colour graphic display and gives distances, accurate to within 3 metres, in either yards or metres as preferred. It also acts as a unique advertising platform with different company logos or messages being displayed on the screen as the cart travels around the course.'
