View Full Version : Streets of Tokyo - Roppongi

Roppongi is the night club district of Tokyo "par excellence" where many
locals joined by foreigners enjoy a night out in bars, dancing clubs, and
coffee shops. Probably due to the numerous foreigners living in the area as
well as the several ambassies/consulates located nearby, Roppongi houses a
variety of international restos, such as french, american, italian, indian, thai,
etc. There's a very special street ambiance on friday/saturday evenings
during which many young people dressed exotically can be seen roaming
around.

Being primarily a residential district, the bars/clubs are spaced out over a large
area: I'm posting here several shots of the big and small streets I took just
before sunset within a km radius of the Roppongi subway stop. As well, I'm
including indoor pictures of the recently opened Roppongi Hills shopping
area.

When people think of Roppongi, they imagine the famous intersection jam packed with nightclubs, hostess bars and restaurants catering to the foreign crowd, though a lot of Japanese also go there. In front of the Almond Cafe is one of the most popular meeting spots in Tokyo (along with Hachiko in Shibuya and Studio Alta in Shinjuku).

However, there's been a few massive commercial developments in the area as well. Roppongi Hills opened a few years ago, and is an ultra-trendy mixed commercial/residential area, with shops, movie theater, apartments, offices, etc.

ARK Hills was completed earlier, and contains the Suntory Concert Hall, the ANA hotel, and the usual assortment of restaurants, shopping, and offices.

Roppongi used to be a pain in the butt to reach, since only the Hibiya subway line went there, and the Hibiya line has horrible connections to other subways. Now the Toei Oedo Line goes there, which is still a pain in the butt since the station is ridiculously deep underground, but it's more convenient.

I avoid Roppongi like the plague, especially on weekends. I can stand to do without a bunch of vulgarly drunk Australian/French businessmen, Russian mafia and their Eastern European hooker, er, hostess clubs, aggressive Nigerian club hustlers, slutty, slutty Japanese girls and worst of all, fuck-off US military looking for the previously mentioned slutty, slutty Japanese girls. The worst of foreigners in Japan is constantly on display in Roppongi.

Two exceptions: Hills (for that kick-ass Virgin Cinema) and Womb (an oasis of relatively clean and hen-na-gaijin-free club fun).

The real night fun is to be had in Shibuya, Sangenjiya and Shimokita.

most weekends i go to Space Lab Yellow in Nishi Azabu and to get there i gotta walk through roppongi and i pretty much scurry through there, the whole scene there reminds me of a tech'd up Tijuana. tawdry, full of navy hornballs, stupid drunks, and crunk music.

Including Roppongi, Minato Ward is the trendiest and probably the most luxury place in whole Tokyo.

Well a lot of the Americans and Australians are stupid and cheap so the Japanese generally hate them. They don't have good enough brain and always behave like prick. The Americans are merely rude and fat (= the inferior race) and can do nothing in here in Japan. I could even go and provoke them to stab me deliberately or something and put all of you into the jail. This is what the Japanese law can do for you. hehehe. Do you wanna use your American guns? Do so. Try do so. Just do it. And this will be another reason I can report to the police. Play with me.

The Japanese police are sadly inept and just as buffoonish as the Americans and Aussies in Roppongi. They are generally too timid to approach a group of Western foreigners, and if they do, it's en mass with a lead guy stumbling through English. If you pretend that you cant speak Japanese, the poor guys will just sheepishly walk away. There needs to be more hardass, pissed-off cops in Roppongi.

Holy shit, hahaha. This probably the most racist thing I've seen on here. Way to go.

I have a strange feeling this guy got jumped by gaijin or something pretty bad...
