CULWULLA December 20th, 2005, 04:28 AM i still think syd-en-nee has best night skyline probably due to fact theres light from over 800 skyscrapers and we have a great reflection factor (harbour) plus may seem to have really dif tops and loightiing schemes along with heaps of neons. A;lso Sydney is lucky being made up of multiple skylines which seem to go on forever,.
Wezza December 20th, 2005, 09:13 AM You know this is probably just going to turn out most people voting for their home city....... Oh well. Lol
theperthvan December 20th, 2005, 09:18 AM Sydney easily
JayT December 20th, 2005, 09:25 AM Sydney - North Sydney and the Bridge add to the night scapes. North Sydney has the most neon advertising.
The Bridge, tower and opera house all add value.

I really love inner Canberra, sure there isnt much of a skyline but with all the parks and great layout, its a very beautiful area. Very wierd to think that all this was just a grassy plain only 80 years ago!
Sinjin P. December 25th, 2005, 11:09 AM Based on the pictures, I'd say MELBOURNE.
SUNNI December 25th, 2005, 01:08 PM i was very tempted to vote GC, but seeing these pics, Melbournes kicks ass

zach24 April 15th, 2006, 04:11 AM well as an ex-brisbane person i would love to say brisbane
however when i think of melbourne, brisbane or perth - it could be any city in the world
its just a group of buildings
sydney has the bridge, opera house and the harbour - its all about having something unique
we may all lie in these votes and vote our own city - but for a city to win it needs to be unique some different not such a clutter of buildings
broadie April 15th, 2006, 10:15 AM sydney is 1000 times better then any of the other skylines
ncik April 15th, 2006, 11:07 AM funny that Melbourne's number of vote is light years ahead of the other cities. Is it 'cause of how brilliant its skyline is at night? or 'cause there's so many of them on here? ;)
mic April 15th, 2006, 02:06 PM ^^
Have you ever been to Melbourne at night....
It actually is the most stunning in the evening. The lighting is subtle and delicate, colourful and well placed. The small laneways a lit up, there are lights in the pavement, every building has a different colour scheme. At street level it is the best city in Australia by a long shot.
Sydney is nice also but it is most stunning during the day time when the sun reflects off the harbour. At night it is very asian looking. Yes it has the harbour bridge and the Opera House and they are stunning, but when walking the streets it is very stark, and not very aesthtically pleasing.
MY OPINION....lets not have a fit.
DeejayT April 15th, 2006, 03:26 PM The Gold Coast pic's on here are crap. Here are some nicer ones i took:

Yes i've been to Melbourne a handful of times.
The lighting and everything at the streetscape and the skyline is nice, but nothing too spectacular.
I agree Sydney is very Asian-looking, with all those neon lights on both sides of the harbour. Probably the reason i love the night skyline so much?
Whereas Melbourne is more like a US city at night, which also has its own charms.
Sydney as my personal preference.
This is hard to beat:

mic April 15th, 2006, 04:07 PM Thats nice...I just think Melbourne is a hard city to beat at street level..and the colour schemes that match the seasons are great.
Aussie Bhoy April 15th, 2006, 04:32 PM I'm from Brisbane and I voted for Sydney as well. I think the only people voting Melbourne are the people from there.
Few too many pics at the start, couldn't we just have had one or 2 classic night views of each city?
zach24 April 15th, 2006, 04:37 PM yeah true..................just having a clump of buildings doesn’t make a city special - you need something unique and special

rondeez April 15th, 2006, 05:27 PM A nightshot of the North Ryde/Chatswood/St Leonards/North Sydney/Milsons Point/Sydney Skyline would be awesome!
CtrlAltDel April 15th, 2006, 06:56 PM I voted Melbourne. The buildings are way nicer (IMHO) and have some space between them so you can see the individual buildings. Beautiful!
mic April 15th, 2006, 11:45 PM Both are great but different.....
Melbourne is more detailed and subtle in my own opinion.

Not THE BEST CITY IN AUSTRALIA WITH HARBOUR, BRIDGE AND OPERA HOUSE.
Perhaps you need to create one with Sydney as a sole contender.
And for people who do not vote for Sydney ... then you can disagree and tell them off...
Talking about those three Sydney icons.. they are spectacular of course..
But hey, we all grown up and intelligent enough to think deeper and beyond that...
Just like your citizen PAUL KEATING in his speech last month..published in Newspaper

Sydney's an 'urban junkyard': Keating
Saturday Mar 4 11:58 AEDT
Sydney is an urban junkyard, relying on the natural beauty of its harbour and its Opera House to make it one of the world's great cities, according to former prime minister Paul Keating.
Mr Keating said his home city was full of "graffiti of modern commercial life" - badly-built buildings, bad colours, different heights, advertising and lights.
And unlike the world's other great cities of Paris, Venice and St Petersburg had very few areas that were pleasing to the eye.
"It's an urban junkyard," Mr Keating told a group of local council mayors and architects in Sydney.
"This is not Melbourne, this is not Paris.
"We have always relied on the physicality and didn't think we had to do much about the rest, and the rest is so god damn ordinary."
Mr Keating said Sydney's CBD was full of buildings that were nothing more than "black glass and steel junk" and that everything except for the Sydney Opera House, the Queen Victoria Building and some court houses were "knock-down jobs".
"This is one of the great pities with architecture, it's really all going that way, most of the buildings are about making money, not about spending money," he said.
This had come about due to years of municipal neglect where everything from "itsy bitsy and sometimes unscrupulous developments" had been carried out by developers, who often used "sleazy appeals" to get what they wanted in the Land and Environment Court, he said.
"We should have design leading development; instead we've got development leading design," Mr Keating said.
"And while ever that's the case, we'll end up with designs which are indifferent to the public space and therefore to the sense of ourselves as individuals."
But Urban Development Institute of Australia executive Director David Poole said Mr Keating's comments were unfair.
Research had shown most people in Sydney liked the city, he said.
"I think this ideal that Sydney could somehow look like Paris or Vienna with seven-storey stone buildings with wide boulevards - that we can turn Sydney into that, Blacktown or even his own home town of Bankstown into that, is pretty unrealistic," Dr Poole said.

Although those pictures are nice can you see the differences in Melbourne lighting and Sydney lighting...
I wont say anything and I will leave it up to the others to pick the differeces.
Aussie Bhoy April 16th, 2006, 03:14 AM It's funny what nights offices seem to light up more. Wednesday seems to be a popular night in Brisbane. I'm suprised there hasn't been a green push for city offices to cut the lights when not in use as a power saving measure.
Anton April 16th, 2006, 03:20 AM ^^ Yes, also in winter when the days are shorter and no dayight saving the illumination is better - more people actually in offices when it is dark. And weeknights are better than weekends.

laxor April 17th, 2006, 03:21 PM I think Sydney.
A harbour crusie through sydney at night is incredible.
If the poll was conducted with only neutral voters i believe the result would be different.
zulu69 April 17th, 2006, 04:22 PM For me it really isn't even close. Sydney's Skyline night or day is head and shoulders above the rest.
The skyline itself is very unique with a lot of interesting shapes and such. BUT the main reason why i think it is in a league of its own is simply it is probably bigger than all Oz skylines combined! I had a cruise last week and from there i could see from Bondi Junction, Liz Bay, Kings Cross, CBD, North Sydney, St leanards and Chats. One seemingly continuous skyline for 10kms! Then there is the whole reflections, icons and setting.
My second would be the GC. This also seems to stretch for ages and has a great shape to it. Future buildings will def improve it and it may even rival Sydney with all these 300m buildings going up!
shrewd.user April 17th, 2006, 04:48 PM we have some fantastic cities down here... :D
Wezza April 18th, 2006, 11:54 AM I haven't voted, too lazy. lol Sydney is the best though, day or night, nothing in Australia comes close.
SoulvisionQ1 April 18th, 2006, 11:57 AM It would be Sydney! You can't beat the harbour and lights... :)
but don't count out brissy, we have the only "full" lit up bridge in Australia!

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f7/Melbourne_Docklands_-_Yarras_Edge_-_marina_panorama.jpg
shrewd.user April 18th, 2006, 01:27 PM isn't that melbourne now?
mic April 19th, 2006, 02:51 AM Yes but the future image of Melbourne will be the Docklands, meaning our new postcard photograph will be mainly from the west as Melbourne is a city in metamorphasis.
Daffy April 19th, 2006, 04:58 AM Unfortunately, the biggest bit of water near the city has been turned into a boat park - it's a bit like turning what is now Birrerung Marr into a car park. That view will be pretty lame with an assortment of boats blocking the view of the water and the reflections from opposite river bank and skyline.

I dont agree that nothing more should be said. Sydney is just as impressive if not more so. Both are very impressive, Sydney has shear size and beauty, but Melbourne has delicacy, intricacy, detail and a more lady like look.

true. All the Queenslanders and NSW heads are biased toward Sydney and Victorians go for Melbourne. Funny thing is almost all the QLD people on this forum go for Sydney. Any one care to prop up some theories on this phenomenon.
christarrant April 19th, 2006, 09:40 AM Adelaide and Melbourne seem to closely align as Bris does with Syd.
I think its because these cities are similar in many ways i.e layout ( BRis and Syd hilly, windy streets, densely packed in the inner city, non grid streets) as well as culture ( AFL v ARL/NRL ), weather conditions etc.
SoulvisionQ1 April 19th, 2006, 09:42 AM ^^ maybe its cause of the similar weather or state of origin rivalry???

And then West Aussies go out on there own to support themselves. Its always felt a bit like that for us isolated ones.
I just think its great that we have these great cities in Oz to debate about what is best. They are all great in there own way but I still give best Skyline to Sydney. Even if it is just because of the Opera House and SHB. They are just true Aussie icons. And Sydney looks great day or night.
Melbourne looks great at night but looks cold and grey during the day for me.
Brisbane never really impressed me but I didn't spend much time there so I won't judge.
Gold Coast is quite spectacular but looks a bit unnatural so close to a beautiful beach.
Haven't been to Adelaide as yet but the last pic posted looks nice.
Perth looks great day or night overlooking the great Swan river. (sigh - homesick)

Couldn't have put it any better. To be honest, only people who "know" Melbourne would vote it. The lighting on top of buildings is constantly changing - from 15 William to Crown to 101 to 120 to VAC spire, etc. The lighting at ground level is far and away the best in Aust and its landmarks are also fairly well lit - Shrine, Flinders St Station, Bolte & West Gate Bridges, Princes Bridge, Fed Square, etc. Frankly, the built environment in Melbourne is the best in Aust as far as I've seen. Sydney's CBD frontage hugging the harbour (as seen from Milson's Point) is better than Melbourne's west end view (featuring Rialto & Bourke Place, as seen from Docklands), but Melbourne's length-wise night skyline - while not as dense as Sydney's as seen from, say, Circular Quay (which is mind blowing, up close & personal!) - is also quite impressive. But if you go further away, Sydney length-wise is not very impressive once the gap between the southern end and northern end CBD towers reveals itself - it's worse than Melbourne's Swanston gap between the west end and "paris end"! Sydney from Centrepoint Tower is not as good as Melbourne from the Rialto at night. All up, close call.
But frankly, I don't understand how Adelaide got more votes than Perth - ever seen Perth from Kings Park?!

Crawf- not sure if you're being tongue-in-cheek above but with all due respect Adelaide is nowhere near comparable to any city above in terms of skyline night lighting! It would realistically come in 7th behind the Gold Coast.

We make the best with what we have... The torrens is lit up very well in the cbd, whith some nice water features which are lit up. As for the city scraper lighting, it isn't any worse then Perths and the classical buildings, especially North Terrace, are lit up exceptionally well, and look very classy.
john14 April 21st, 2006, 08:35 PM Obviously, Adelaide is a small city and Melbourne and Sydney are medium-large cities. Therefore, Melbourne and Sydney attract more large companies (to establish their Australian/Asia-Pacific headquarters) who require larger skyscrapers than we have in Adelaide. Adelaide does extremely well for a small city (for skyline lighting etc...). Also, Adelaide is financially poorer than Melbourne and Sydney which affects the size of skyscrapers and the amount of expensive lighting which Sydney and Melbourne skyscrapers have. Adelaide's lighting is extremely good for a small city.

tigermike May 10th, 2006, 01:44 PM clearly it has to be Melbourne....I do think that Sydney has some indivudual structures which stand out beautifully but as a whole Melbourne is streaks ahead in regards to night skyline. Sydney second with Perth not far behind.....I love Perths skyline...minimalist but a couple of really striking talls.

SkyBoy May 11th, 2006, 04:13 AM It's sad to see Perth being so underrated. :|
Okay... most people know that it does not have the density of Sydney or Melbourne. But clearly it is so photogenic with the beauty of the Swan river being only just behind that of Sydney Harbour's. Melbourne may have a big and dense CBD with massive tallies, but it can only dream of having a beautiful natural asset such as the Swan river or Sydney Harbour.
mic May 11th, 2006, 04:25 AM ^^
But the city it's self is beautiful..you can have natural setting and still be an ugly city.
I'm not saying either Perth or Sydney are ugly, cityscape and natural setting are great in both..they're stunning, but at the end of the day if your cityscape is shit, no mass of water is going to fix/hide that.
docker May 11th, 2006, 10:48 AM very true! thats why so many people are afraid to develop the foreshore in perth. but if the development is good it can enhance perths looks at night or day from boths side of the river.

You all be knowing Q1 is lit up like a christmas tree, but plenty of others to join it's ranks soon.
The Circle on Cavills are also going to have some pretty radical blue lighting running up the back of them, and no doubt some stuff on top as well as it has a bit of fin up top, as will Soul, and ANA is meant to have a killer lighting system, so it will look pretty shit hot at night soon:

scottsimmons80 June 28th, 2006, 02:40 AM I'm originally from Sydney, live in Brisbane, and think Melbourne's is the best. Coneslammer June 28th, 2006, 11:00 AM Melbourne's buildings are probably the best in Australia, but the CBD is in such a boring and uninspired location, which detracts a lot from it.

I'm sorry but Melbourne is not dying/sliding into obscurity. Our stunning skyline is just one indication of this! Perhaps you should seek counselling!
Lol don't worry every city has one of those people lol.
I am really stuck between Perth, Sydney and Melbourne.
Perth looks more dense at night than at day, and it just gives me a sense of warmth seeing it as I cross the Swan River, its a beautiful city, and I am going to have to give it my vote because its just magnificent: the river, kings park lit up and the city.
Sydney has to be my second vote, with all its lights, its just magnificent, especially those laser lights off the bridge, brilliant!! Unfortunately I have not visited sydney yet...
Melbroune would have to be third, sorry to the victorians, but what I love about Melbourne is Eureka, its just stunning the way it shines through the fog on sunset and sunrise, and possibly throughout the day, I don't know, either way, it is pure aussie genious.
Overall we australians must be proud of our skylines, they may not be internationally big, but hell they are beautiful.
ryan79 June 28th, 2006, 02:06 PM It's absurd to even debate this: compared to coming over the Harbour Bridge at night every other city in Australia is a charity case winning sympathy points.
I would rate coming over the Narrows bridge in Perth a similar experience.
Th3-Co0L-P3rTh-Guy June 28th, 2006, 02:39 PM i think that pertyh should deserve more votes, because it is a well calculated skyline, and fits in well with the river and the surroundings (buts that just me talking) and should also look even better with the current boom that we are in atm :)
Th3-Co0L-P3rTh-Guy June 28th, 2006, 02:40 PM this would have to be 1 of my favourite pics of perth, even thought it is quite a bit old, it shows the cool lighting before the convention centre was built:)
srry about the blur:(

Bullswool June 28th, 2006, 02:43 PM it would be nice to see us get something out of this boom  a nice 300m tower?!! Its all in my dreams.... :bash:

yeah that would be cool, but the city limit is 300m(dont know why) but the future emu berury site could easly produce a 200m-250m tower or even towers:)
ryan79 June 28th, 2006, 03:09 PM I'd like to see something bright and big added to the skylne. The convention centre is so dull and so much could have been done at ground level to prep it up. Its a monster of a building but is very dull at night.
WestEnderBender June 28th, 2006, 05:23 PM This was posted in the Brisbane thread. Thought it deserved a place here.
Took this earlier tonight over at New Farm...

skyisthelimit June 29th, 2006, 04:56 PM I'm from Melb but I voted Sydney - no bias from me. ;)

yes i really agree, but i can remember a while back of the city council wanting to put a tower on top of it, but, yeah i do agree with you in which that it is a really dull convention centre, could really do with a makeover:)
