Hehe, that pic with the soldiers shocked me too :) Of course there was nothing strange with the soldiers themselves... it's just that.. you know, for example in my place it would call my attention to see so many soldiers in the streets, here where I live.. I would imagine that something big happened, because you never see soldiers in the streets, but of course we live under different circunstances.. so, you know, I just say I understand it's shocking because it got to me too, but I understand it.

I know that... that's why the pic didn't really surprise me :) I understand it's a different situation there and it's a common thing to see soldiers in the streets. It's just that we're not used to seeing it here... actually, I remember when I was in Italy a few years ago (before the 9/11), I freaked out just cos the "carabinieri" would patrol with big shotguns in the airport... hehe, plus, I'm scared of guns in general.

Here nobody wants to join the army... they're desperate to get people to join them :) The latest TV promotion about it is to laugh to death... at first you think it's going to be the commercial of some refreshment, a young urban clothing brand or something like that... and then you see it's the army, hahaha, it's hilarious.

Obviously I understand and support the need of a numerous army presence in the Israeli streets, and I hope nobody understood the contrary from my words... I totally understand and respect how serious the Tzahal takes its responsibility of protecting the lives of the Israeli people.

Well the presence of the police in Madrid is much more evident after the 11\3, but you can't see they're armed most of the times (or at least it's not too visible), and you don't see the army in the streets.
Anyway, I'm not sure of how effective the police reinforcement is... I remember last summer I was in Madrid with a friend we were both carrying backpacks, and we also had big bags with us... and taking all that with us we went on the subway... two policemen were in front of us and they didn't even look at us...
I had been many times to Madrid before March 11th, but this my first time there after 11\3... I was a bit nervous about using the subway because of that, and I got even more paranoid when I thought of how I could be carrying a bomb in my backpack and nobody would have noticed..

But anyway, here the army never takes responsibility for security in the streets (unless in an extraordinary situation, I suppose), just the police and a different kind of police called Guardia Cívil (Civil Guard) do that job.

Back then everybody was very scared and yeah the security measures that were taken were very visible.. I think now people are too relaxed and they forgot about it... but after we published the Muhammad cartoons in Spain I'm scared something may happen again... The secret services arrest terrorists more often than you may think at first, so I don't think we should be too relaxed...

it's very natrual that people will be relaxed or too relaxed now , because fortunately the reality in countries like Spain or England is not a reality of everyday fear from the next Bombing. a constant reality of bombings changes people and make them more aware of the possiblity that something might happen in any minute , that's why you can see weapon and guards in every public place in Israel, and that's why the situation is different in Spain.

I know, I know, I understood why I can see armed soldiers in public places in Israel... I never meant that it didn't make sense or anything like that, I hope nobody understood that from my words. I wish for the day when Israelis will also be able to relax.

Anyway, let's not get sad now... It wasn't my purpose to bring this topic up, I'm sorry I did.

Changing the topic now... I have a question for you guys, well, I've seen maps of Tel Aviv but I don't really have a sense of the distances there... I wanted to ask how far is, let's say, Neve Zedek, from Ben Yehuda street. Are distances in the city center walkable or using the public transport is strictly necessary? (I mean for a tourist, not for the city inhabitant). And is it easy to move around the city by bike?

the distances in the important places for tourists are okay , but there is a big difference between the summer and the winter, at winter you can walk some hours and it'll be alright but at summer it's a different thing - the humidity is so fucking high you can't walk few minutes without sweating as if you went 10 km's.
i don't know what is the precise distances but it won't take long to walk from Neve-Zedek to Shenkin and Rotschild and from there to the sea.

Yeah, I know that most of them are probably private property. However, in US the government can create local historic districts which put restrictions on what people can do to their buildings (sometimes they are so detailed as to actually prohibit you from installing non-historic windows !) or they offer tax-credits to owners of income-generating properties (such as commercial buildings or apartment buildings).

I think that aside from very old buildings and archeological sites Israel could capitalize on its early 20th century buildings in Tel-Aviv to attract more tourism.

If I remember correctly, Tel-Aviv has received a designation by UNESCO as a world heritage site. Does that influence the preservation of "old" structures in the city ?

I always think , if we want to see the best parts of one city , we don´t need to take a photo just in the beautiful parts ,and I think Tel Aviv has many faces , looks like a old , modern and simply city , and I like that.
