Yeah , I can certainly understand the need for better planning . It's just that in the context of this thread , I thought you were saying that ALL of Moscow was going to see a serious cutting back of development . That's the part that made no sense to me .

Continued development of the outlying areas certainly makes plenty of sense but there's no need necessarily to restrict development . Actually , it's simply a matter of better planning . I mean , if Manhattan can function while acting as the downtown for a conurbation of nearly 30 million people , Moscow should be able to do the same . Granted , Moscow is growing quite a bit faster than New York and the latter has had decades to develop transportation infrastructure but again , it's not development that's the problem , it's the poor planning that's made Moscow the traffic mess it's become .

Come back around 2020 :lol: Don't also forget that it's cold as duck in Moscow now, so not many people would enjoy a walk outside. Oh, and there are a lot of people visiting the shopping mall in the Central Core, but they don't even show up on the streets 'cause there is an entrance to the mall directly from the underground station :)

If the skyline grows and the skyscrapers rise up one after another, Moscow's skyline will probably become the most beautiful one in Europe (maybe after London)...

Yes, they did solve this problem by designing the self-supporting axis of the building, so it would not be sensitive to the small oscillations of this axis (Nikitin's idea), also, the foundation is far more sophisticated (and as expensive as the building itself, I guess), such that it substitutes the bedrock itself.

Bad bedrock is not an insurmanoutable problem, but it is certainly cheaper to build on solid granite rock than on marshland permeated by indreground rivers with carbonate rock deposits here and there. These carbonate sedimantary rocks date back to times when this plain was bottom of an ocean, they are full of unpredictable treacherous cavities carved out by underground water streams.

Hi! The climate of Moscow is easily comparable to Chicago's climate - both can experience extreme winter cold waves and summer heat waves. The primary difference is that Moscow's winters last longer, and temperatures stay below freezing for an entire day for a larger number of days.

So, next time you see a construction of skyscraper in Moscow froze, blame lack of funds, not the weather.

At the time of shooting, it was 3 °C (38 °F) in Moscow.

It's easier to work with alone cold tempatures than also with snow.

This reflects the whole Russia - the fire on the Federation (happened 2 times), the fire on the bridge in Vladivostok that almost ruined the whole overly expensive construction. It's amazing Russians managed to build these crappy buildings which are already there. Low discipline, violation of the architects ideas, cheap materials, bribery and money laundry on these projects. Cheap uneducated labor force from China and former Soviet republics whose rights are neglected and whose conditions of life are lower than those of european homeless. This cluster is being built for a ridiculously long time, Federation tower is being built from 2005! Oh! And not to mention how the nice facades of the old Stalinist architecture are being disfigured by the airconditioners, new white plastic windows that don't belong there and cheap renovation. Russia today is a joke, a parody on itself 40 years ago and no tall skyscraper built in Moscow that is flut with dirty money will ever change that.

You can say it is slow because Russia has been affected by the financial crisis but saying the towers are disfigured or the whole cluster is a shame is somewhat ridiculous. None of these words will ever change what this cluster actually is - a mockery, a copy of the large clusters such as La Defence, Manhattan's financial district and overall downtown, even tacky Shanghai surpasses Moscow by the quantity and apparently - quality. Frankfurt, City, La Defence, - they all have a clear utilitarian purpose, whereas Moscow city is just a cheap showoff that they cannot even build properly. And financial crisis has little to do with this, because they started this whole project based on a complicated investment scheme that wasn't exactly all civilized. Mercury city tower will have originally unintended elongation of the top section that will look too narrow, The City of Capitals got two little ridiculous huts on the top that architect didn't want to see there. Developer and architect even had this case considered in court. Dirty money won. So, they don't respect the architects' ideas. No proper parking system and poorly designed transportation solution. Cheap glass cladding that breaks when seasons change. Federation tower has a cliff in the concrete foundation. This cluster, maybe, looks ok at night, but it is a monument of grandiose and cheap showoff, all tacky and very freudian in nature. Moscow deserves better than that. Having this eyesore being constructed for almost a decade with occasional fires, construction accidents, ownership debates, on-hold pauses and overall negligence to the architects opinion.

MIBC is the largest development project in Moscow since Seven Sisters, I think, and it does have problems, lack of parking space and public spaces being the major ones (access roads, too, but they're at least under construction). It is destined to be unfinished for another 5-10 years since there are so many projects and companies involved and will remain an easy target for blames of 'it will never be complete' kind.

The funniest argument, though, is "Moscow deserves better than that". Well, kiddo, this is true for 95% of all buildings in Moscow, since very few buildings outside historical downtown carry any architectural merit. And even most of those XVIII-XIX century buildings in central district aren't considered true monuments by architectural critics since best buildings of that era were built in Saint Petersburg, the capital at the time. This doesn't mean we should destroy 95% of Moscow and smell the ashes. You want to build a skyscraper you like - open up a $1bn credit line and go ahead.

It also feels awkward to argue with another Russian in English, but since YaWW pissed off everyone at Russian section he's resorted to international threads.
